Diane Rogers

Diane K. Rogers, age 74, of Dell Rapids, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 3, 2021, at her home in Dell Rapids. A memorial gathering with family will be held from 5:00-6:30 PM Wednesday, July 7, 2021, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home in Dell Rapids. Interment will follow at approximately 7:00 PM at the Trent (Sunny Side) Cemetery in Trent, SD.

Diane was born in Madison, SD, on December 10, 1946, to Louis and Viola (Kahl) Gednalske. She attended school in Dell Rapids and continued her education by attending community college in Sioux Falls where she earned a degree in accounting. Throughout her life, Diane held a variety of jobs, but primarily she dedicated her life to being a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She welcomed her children’s friends as well and looked after them as her own. Diane loved gathering with family and sharing a never-ending supply of hugs.

Diane had several talents and hobbies, and many of them allowed her to enjoy time with her family and friends. Diane loved to bowl and play horseshoes, pool, darts, bingo, cards, and board games. She was also a talented painter, possessing a natural gift of making objects look unbelievably real. Diane was always up for a cup of coffee or a road trip. She liked to travel and for years, Diane would ride the bus and then fly to Texas to stay with family. Diane took pride in her home and her yard, insisting on keeping up with the yardwork and gardening. During the week of her passing, she insisted on pruning her rose bush and cleaning the stones in her fairy rock garden. Diane had a firecracker personality but was also very sweet, with a warm, glowing smile that brightened the room. Once Diane was diagnosed with cancer, she did not fear death because she knew she would soon be with her son Otey.

Survivors include her children: Tammy (Steve) Wendell, Trent, Lisa (Jeff) Nielsen, Trent, Merry (special friend Chuck) Rogers, Sioux Falls, Kenny (fiancé Chloye) Rogers, Sioux Falls, and Ann (Dan) Schmidt, Sugar Land, TX; grandchildren: Jerica (Nick) Johnson, Jace Blair, Jordon Rogers, Jasmine (Logan) Cochran, Daniell Rogers, Tyler Sparks, Michael Schmidt, and Andrew Schmidt; great grandchildren: Isabelle, Emmett, and Glaydon; brothers: LeRoy Gednalske, Flandreau, Ron (Jean) Gednalske, Harrisburg; and sisters-in-law: Bette, Janice, and Jackie Gednalske.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Otey Rogers; and brothers: Richard, James, and Robert Gednalske.

Tri-Valley 16U Falls to Madison Black

Despite having an early 1-0 lead, Tri-Valley couldn’t slow down Madison Black as Madison defeated Tri-Valley 9-2 on Monday, July 5th.

Mason Hendrixson got Tri-Valley on the board first in the bottom of the first inning on a single to left field scoring Kaden Egger.  Madison, however, responded with five runs in the top of the second and three more in the top of the third to take an 8-1 lead.  Tri-Valley got another run in the bottom of the third.  Cole Focken had a line drive single scoring Egger.  Madison scored one more run in the top of the fifth for the 9-2 win.

Hendrixson and Focken both had a single and an RBI.  Everett Althoff had a double in the game.  Beau Keith and Tanner Van Asselt both had a hit as well.

Egger pitched four innings allowing nine earned runs on 13 hits with two walks and four strikeouts.  Aidan Heitkamp pitched one inning giving up one hit and striking out two batters.

Jay Nebben

Jay Arthur Nebben, age 69, of Dell Rapids, passed away unexpectedly at his home of natural causes on Friday, July 2, 2021. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 AM Friday, July 9, 2021, at the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. Interment will follow in the Dell Rapids Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2:00 PM Thursday, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Dell Rapids, with the family present from 5-7:00 PM. The service will be live streamed on Jay’s obituary page at www.minnehahafuneralhome.com.

Jay Arthur Nebben was born October 11th, 1951 to Arthur and Delores (Maseman) Nebben, in Dell Rapids, SD. Jay was baptized in the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. He attended school in Dell Rapids, graduating in 1969. Jay enlisted in the United States Navy in 1969 and served until 1973. He was an electrical aviation mechanic onboard the USS Constellation stationed in the Philippines. He was discharged on October 11th, 1973. He farmed with his dad on the family farm. He graduated from Dakota State College with a respiratory therapist degree and started working at the Dell Rapids Hospital in 1983, where he was employed for thirty-eight years.

Jay met his wife Sally Leuning on a blind date and they were married June 9, 1990 at Hendricks, Minnesota. They made their home in Dell Rapids and were married for twenty-three years. They were blessed with two children Peter and Jenny.  Sally passed away on October 11, 2013.  Jay was a member of the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. He was an “EMT” for the Dell Rapids Ambulance and taught many classes, training others. He taught “safety town“ for kids and brought his dalmatian “Detour” with him for all to enjoy.  Jay was a member of the Dell Rapids Legion Post 65 and the Dell Rapids Firing Squad. He was a legion commander and he and his father Art were instrumental in starting the Veterans Memorial Park. Jay was very proud to have served his country and continue the military heritage of his father.  Jay was a sports enthusiast, he bowled in a league in Dell Rapids and played American Legion baseball for Dell Rapids as the pitcher, and they won the state championship in 1969. He could often be found telling stories at almost all of the many football, basketball, track and baseball games that he attended. He also loved to attend his son Peter’s football games and weightlifting competitions and his daughter Jenny’s volleyball games.  He was on the Dell Rapids Township board, a member of the historical society and promoter of the Dells Rapids Museum. He loved antiques, history, and photography. Jay could tell you the history and facts on just about anything around Dell Rapids and the area.   Jay enjoyed hunting and reading, especially books about World War II, farm sales, and old farm equipment. He raised livestock and continued to farm on the family farm until his death.  Jay made many friends in the community and through his work, and always made sure to attend weddings, funerals, birthdays, and social events, when at all possible. He always had a helping hand for anyone who needed it, and paid visits to friends and family in nursing homes and hospitals. He delivered coffee and treats to the nurses at the hospital every morning and had coffee at the Dell Rapids Elevator where he and his friends caught up on the daily news around town. He cherished his two grandchildren and would take them to see the new calves in the spring.   Jays warm smile and stories will surely be missed in the Dell Rapids community.

He is survived by his children: Peter (Sydney) Nebben and Jennifer (Jesse Lobdell) Nebben, grandchildren: Jason and Jayda Lobdell; sisters: Jan Dybvig and Melanie Burggraaff of Dell Rapids; brother-in-law, Garry Leuning of Hendricks, MN; sister-in-law, Janelle (Bill) Bittner of Crooks; aunts, Hilda Johnson of Dell Rapids, and Rosie Croon of Colman; and uncle, Palmer Nebben of Sioux Falls; and several nieces and nephews and many cousins.  Jay was preceded in death by his wife Sally Nebben, father Art Nebben, mother Dee Nebben, infant brother Lynn Nebben, grandparents Joe and Pearl Maseman and John and Anna Nebben; father-in-law Howard “Hoot” Leuning, mother-in-law Phyllis Leuning, and a brother-in-law Dean Leuning.

West Central 16U Wins Easily over Madison Black

West Central scored five times in the top of the first inning and continued to roll from there on their way to a 13-2 win in five innings over Madison on Thursday, July 1st.

Justin Zirpel brought home the first two runs on a triple.  Zirpel scored the third run on a wild pitch.  Dylan Stromer had an RBI triple, and Gage Nelson had an RBI ground out all in the top of the first inning.  Madison got two runs back in the bottom of the inning to make the score 5-2.

West Central added two runs in the top of the second with two outs.  Camden McDonald scored on an error, and Nelson drew a bases-loaded walk to push the lead to 7-2.  Four more runs were scored in the top of the third inning.  McDonald had a two-run double and later scored on an error.  Stromer added another RBI triple to make the score 11-2.  The final two runs were scored in the fifth inning when Dalton Mulder had an RBI double, and Gavin Gerlach had an RBI single.

Stromer had two triples and two RBIs.  McDonald had two hits, one a double, and two RBIs.  Mulder had two hits, including a double, and an RBI.  Zirpel had a triple and two RBIs.  Gerlach had a single and RBI.  Duece Sherard had a double, and Nelson had two RBIs.

Andrew Zimmer pitched all five innings allowing two earned runs on six hits with six strikeouts.

Elkton Runs Away from Tri-Valley 16U

Elkton scored in every inning and defeated Tri-Valley 11-1 on the ten-run rule on Thursday, July 1st in Elkton.

Tri-Valley held a short-lived 1-0 lead after scoring in the top of the first inning.  Kaden Egger scored on a wild pitch with one out in the inning.  Elkton then scored four times in the bottom of the first and four more in the bottom of the second.  They would then scored two in the bottom of the third and one more in the bottom of the fourth before getting Tri-Valley out in the top of the fifth to end the game.

Tri-Valley was held to just one a hit, a single by Egger.  Noah Haynes pitched three innings allowing 10 runs, six earned, on nine hits with two walks and a strikeout.  Everett Althoff pitched an inning allowing an unearned run on two hits.

Dell Rapids 16U Defeats Baltic

Dell Rapids broke a 0-0 tie in the top of the third inning and cruised to an 8-1 victory in Baltic on Thursday, July 1st.

Aiden Boechler plated the first run with an RBI double in the top of the third.  Dylan Mathis scored on a wild pitch in the top of the fourth to give Dell Rapids a 2-0 lead.  Three more runs scored in the top of the fifth.  Brayden Pankonen had a two-run double, and Will Jaton had a sacrifice bunt scoring Pankonen.

CJ Smith scored on a passed ball in the top of the sixth to add another run to the Dell Rapids lead.  Baltic got their lone run in the bottom of the sixth when Cooper Goehring scored on an error.  Dell Rapids then added two more runs in the top of the seventh.  Pankonen had an RBI single, and Mathis had an RBI ground out.

Pankonen was a perfect 4-4 at the plate with a double and three RBIs.  Boechler had two hits, including a double, and an RBI.  Mathis also had two hits, one a double, and an RBI.  Jaton had a hit and an RBI.  Smith added a double, and Braden Fersdahl also had a hit.

Pankonen pitched six innings allowing an unearned run on seven hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.  Jaton pitched the final inning walking two and striking out one.

Dell Rapids 14U has No Problem with Tri-Valley White

Dell Rapids had no problem with Tri-Valley White as they scored at least one run in six of the seven innings on their way to a 10-1 win in Colton on Wednesday, June 30th.  This was the fifth game in four days for Dell Rapids, and they won four of the five.

Dell Rapids scored three runs in the top of the first inning.  Logan Donovan scored on an error.  Cooper Frost had an RBI double and then scored on a passed ball.  Tad Tjaden drove home two more runs with a double in the top of the second inning.  Kenny Swanson had an RBI single in the third.  Lincoln Fersdahl had his RBI single in the top of the fourth.  Talan Millage scored on an error in the top of the fifth inning.  Dell Rapids led 8-0 at that point in the game.  Tri-Valley scored a run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth, but Dell Rapids scored two more in the top of the sixth.  Quinn Carr scored on a passed ball, and Fersdahl stole home.

Tjaden had two hits, both doubles, and two RBIs.  Millage had two hits.  Cooper Frost had a double and an RBI.  Carr had a triple and RBI.  Fersdahl and Swanson both had a single and RBI.  Ethan Vanderwerf and Nick Snyder both had a hit as well.

Tjaden also pitched 4 2/3 innings allowing one earned run on a hit with four walks and 10 strikeouts.  Millage pitched the final 2 1/3 innings without allowing a hit and striking out seven batters.

Tri-Valley White 14U Drops Game to Dell Rapids

Tri-Valley White 14U had a hard time shutting down Dell Rapids as Dell Rapids scored in every inning but the last in a 10-1 win over Tri-Valley in Colton on Wednesday, June 30th.

Dell Rapids scored three runs right away in the top of the first.  They added two more in the second, single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings, and then two more in the sixth.  Tri-Valley’s run came in the bottom of the fifth when Levi Kretzschmar scored on a passed ball.

Tri-Valley was held to just two hits in the game.  Parker Hemme and Gage Egger had the two hits.  Benjamin Myhre pitched four innings allowing seven runs, but only one earned, on six hits with one walk and one strikeout.  Egger pitched three innings allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits with four walks and three strikeouts.

Gamecocks Cruise to League Win over Colman

The Hartford-Humboldt Gamecocks scored 14 straight runs over six innings and defeated the Colman A’s 14-3 in seven innings on Wednesday, June 30th.

The runs started early for the Gamecocks.  They scored six times in the top of the second inning and continued to cruise from there.  They scored one run in the third, three in the fourth, three in the fifth, and one more in the sixth.  Colman did get three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the game ended on the 10-run rule after seven innings.

Cole Hellie had three hits and an RBI.  Devon Garry had two hits and two RBIs.  Cam Quigley and Tyler Renken both had two hits, each also having a double, and an RBI.  Chad Morrison also had two hits and an RBI.  Broc Haldeman had two hits, including a double.  Noah Vettrus had a home run and five RBIs.  Drew DeMers had a hit and two RBIs, and Drew Maras had a hit and an RBI.

Renken pitched five innings allowing just one hit and three walks with five strikeouts.  Maras pitched two innings allowing three earned runs on two hits and two walks.

Loof Gets Walk-off Hit for West Central Royal 14U

With the game tied 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth, Stone Loof hit a ball to right field that dropped for a single scoring Cooper Mulder for the game-winner lifting West Central Royal 14U to a 3-2 win over Madison Maroon on Wednesday, June 30th.

West Central scored first in the bottom of the first on an RBI double by Landen Holewa.  Madison tied the game in the top of the third when a run scored on an error.  West Central regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth when CJ DenBoer scored on an error for a 2-1 lead.  Madison again tied the game, this time in the top of the sixth on an RBI single.

Neither team scored in the seventh and eighth innings, setting up the game-winner in the bottom of the ninth by Loof.

Landon Whiting had three hits in the game.  Loof had two hits and an RBI.  DenBoer had two hits.  Holewa had a double and an RBI.  Tyler Warne and Quincy Stephens both had a single.

Stephens pitched five innings allowing an unearned run on four hits with three walks and five strikeouts.  Holewa got the win pitching 3 1/3 innings allowing an unearned run on three hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
