Richard Lewis

Richard M. Lewis, 64, of Trent, passed away on Friday, July 30, 2021 at his home. His Memorial Service will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 4, 2021 at Kahler-Brende Funeral Home. www.kahlerfh.com

Richard was born January 21st, 1957 in Fort Ord, California. His parents were Ira J. Lewis (Father) and Rosemarie Madril Lewis (Mother). Richard was raised in a military family which allowed him the opportunity to call multiple locations home while growing up and following his father’s career. After high school, Richard married Virginia Ruth Boney who blessed him with his first Son, Jason. Richard later married Carol Anne Gallagher who blessed him with two more Sons, Ryan and Matthew. Richard and Carol were married for 18 years before divorcing in 1998. Richard was employed for 20 years by Chevron Refinery in Richmond, California prior to moving to Trent, South Dakota in 2005. He resided in Trent until the time of his passing. Richard is preceded in death by his Parents and 2 Grandchildren.

Richard was an avid fisherman who spent a lifetime passing on his fishing knowledge to his three children. Richard was also a talented artist who enjoyed drawing houses and landscapes, using pointillism at times to portray depth and detail. When Richard wasn’t fishing or drawing, he could be found in his music studio playing the drums or his bass guitar. He enjoyed playing music with his close family and friends.

Richard is survived by his three Sons, all of which reside in California. Jason his eldest, is married to Megan and has two children Jaxon and Alana. Ryan his second child, has Reagan and Ryker. Matthew the youngest Son, has Behnjamin and Maddison. Richard is also survived by his siblings Bob and Angie Lewis of Trent SD, Shawn and Daniel Richardson of Fairfield CA, and David and Lori Lewis of Imperial CA.

Mudcats Finish Second at District 4B Tournament

The Dell Rapids Mudcats took second at the District 4B tournament in Colman on Saturday, July 31st, falling to the Flandreau Cardinals 10-6 in the championship game.

Flandreau grabbed the early lead in the game.  They scored two times in the first inning and then two more in third for a 4-0 lead.  The Mudcats cut the lead in half with two in the fourth inning.  Chad Hunt drove home both runs to make the score 4-2.  Flandreau, however, broke the game open in the seventh with four runs for an 8-2 lead.  The Mudcats got three runs in the eighth inning.  Ty Hoglund, Nate Henry, and Mark Abrahamson all had RBI hits.  Flandreau scored two times, and the Cardinals led 10-5 after eight innings.  Josh Roemen had a solo home run in the ninth, but that was the only run Dell Rapids would get in the inning.

Travis Peters had three hits in the game.  Hunt had two hits, a double and single, and two RBIs.  Grant Olson had two hits, including a double.  Roemen had a home run and an RBI.  Abrahamson had a double and an RBI.  Hoglund and Henry both had a single and an RBI.  Jimmy Bauer and Trevor Freudenthal both had a single.

Dalton Allen pitched one inning allowing two runs on two hits with two strikeouts.  John Spaeth pitched four innings allowing two runs on two hits with one strikeout.  Abrahamson pitched four innings and gave up six runs on four hits.

The Mudcats will play the Lake Norden Lakers on Friday, August 6th at 7:30 p.m. in the opening round of the South Dakota Amateur State B Tournament in Mitchell.

PBR Qualifies for State with Win over Colman

Dell Rapids PBR punched their ticket to the 2021 State B Amateur Baseball Tournament with a 12-2 win over Colman on Thursday, July 29th in Colman at the District 4B tournament. 

PBR broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the third inning and went to score six straight runs over three innings.  Weston Hanson scored on an error in the bottom of the third.  Beau Behrend reached on an error in the bottom of the fourth scoring Riley Calhoon.  Hanson had an RBI single later in the inning.  Nate McKee had an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth.  Behrend also had an RBI single, and McKee later scored on a wild pitch to give PBR a 7-1 lead after five innings of play.

Colman picked up a run in the top of the sixth inning, but PBR scored the final five runs.  Hanson reached on an error in the bottom of the seventh that scored both Calhoon and Trey Randal.  Riley Hoffman added an RBI single in the inning to push the lead to 10-2.  The game ended in the bottom of the eighth on the 10-run rule after a two-run home run by McKee.

McKee had two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs.  Hanson had two hits and an RBI.  Calhoon and Carter Gullickson both finished with two hits.  Hoffman and Behrend both had a hit and an RBI, and Tanner Solberg also had a hit.  Hoffman pitched all eight innings allowing two runs, on earned, on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts.

PBR is the fourth of seven Cornbelt teams to qualify for the state tournament joining Dell Rapids Mudcats, Flandreau, and Canova.  Three more teams will qualify from the Cornbelt League on Friday, July 30th and Saturday, July 31st.

New School Board Officers Selected at Last Meeting

During the Dell Rapids School Board’s last meeting, they selected new officers and officially welcomed the newest board member for the year.

Troy Randall who ran unopposed was officially sworn in for another three-year term.  Paula Harvey was appointed to a one-year term to fill an open seat and was also sworn in at the meeting.

Jeff Traill was elected. as the board president.  Matt Weiland was named the vice president.

The Dells City Journal was designated the official newspaper for legal publications for the school board.  Weiland as selected as Prairie Lakes Educational Cooperative Board of Directors representative with Harvey selected as the alternate.  Traill was named the ASBSD voting delegate.

The school board meetings will continue to be held on the second Monday of every month.  The next meeting will be held on Monday, August 9th.

Wagner Ends West Central 16U Region Run

The West Central 16U run through the Region 1A tournament came to an end on Wednesday, July 28th.  Wagner scored seven late runs and held off a West Central rally to get an 11-9 victory and advance to the championship game.

West Central scored first in the top of the first inning.  Camden McDonald and Andrew Zimmer both had RBI ground outs for an early 2-0 lead.  Wagner cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom of the first.  West Central got another run in the top of the second on an RBI ground out by Will Nester.  Wagner, however, took the lead in the bottom of the second with three runs and led 4-3 after two innings of play. 

West Central regained the lead in in the top of the third on a two-run single by Gage Nelson.  The lead extended to 6-4 after McDonald reached on an error which also scored Nester.  The big inning for Wagner came in the bottom of fifth when they scored four runs to get an 8-6 lead.  Wagner added three more in the bottom of the sixth to push the lead to 11-6.  West Central put a little rally together in the top of the seventh.  Dylan Stromer had an RBI single. Dalton Mulder scored on an error, and Nelson had an RBI ground out to cut the lead to 11-9, but that rally was stopped there.

Stromer had three hits and an RBI.  Nelson finished with two hits and three RBIs.  Zimmer had two hits, one a double, and an RBI.  Dylan Sherard had two hits.  Nester had a hit and an RBI, and Justin Zirpel had a double.  Cade Vander Woude pitched five innings and allowed eight earned runs on 13 hits with five strikeouts.  Zirpel pitched an inning allowing three runs, none of them earned, on one hit and two walks with two strikeouts.

Even though the regional tournament is over for West Central, they still finished in the top four of the region to qualify for the state tournament.  The 2021 South Dakota VFW 16U Class A State Tournament will be held in Madison August 6th – 8th.

Mudcats Beat PBR in District 4B Semifinals

The Dell Rapids Mudcats met Dell Rapids PBR in the semifinals of the District 4B Tournament in Colman on Tuesday, July 27th.  The Mudcats punched their ticket to the 2021 South Dakota Class B State Tournament with a 13-3 win in eight innings.

The Mudcats got out to an early lead thanks to a three-run home run by Trevor Freudenthal in the bottom of the first inning.  They added to that lead with two more runs in the bottom of the third on an RBI sacrifice fly by Josh Roemen and an RBI single by Grant Olson.  Mark Abrahamson drove home a run with a single in the bottom of the fourth, and Freudenthal scored on an error in the bottom of the fifth to push the Mudcat lead to 7-0.

PBR finally got on the board in the top of the sixth inning.  Brandon Geraets scored on a passed ball, and Riley Hoffman had an RBI groundout to cut the lead to 7-2.  The Mudcats scored four more times in the bottom of the seventh.  Freudenthal had a two-run home run, and Travis Peters and Grant Olson both scored on a passed ball to make the score 11-2.  Matt Gillogly hit a solo home run in the top of the eighth for PBR, but the Mudcats got two runs on a two-run single by Jimmy Bauer to end the game on the 10-run rule.

PBR was led by Carter Gullickson with two doubles.  Gillogly had a home run and an RBI.  Gillogly also pitched four innings allowing six earned runs on five hits with six walks and a strikeout.  Jake Rechtenbaugh pitched two innings alloing four runs, two earned, on one hit and three walks with one strikeout.  David Kirby pitched 1 2/3 innings allowing two runs on a hit with four walks and two strikeouts.

Freudenthal had the big night for the Mudcats with two home runs and five RBIs.  Bauer had a hit and two RBIs.  Roemen and Abrahamson both had a hit and an RBI.  Chad Hunt finished with a double, and Olson had a hit.  Dalton Lehner pitched seven innings allowing two runs on two hits and a walk with 13 strikeouts.  Dalton Allen pitched one inning allowing one run on one hit and one walk with two strikeouts.

PBR will play the winner of Salem/Colman on Thursday, July 29th at 8:00 p.m.  The Mudcats will play in the championship game against Flandreau on Saturday, July 31st at 6:30 p.m.  Both games will be in Colman.

West Central 16U Wins Two at Regions and Qualifies for State

The West Central 16U team got two wins at the Region 1A tournament on Tuesday, July 27th after dropping their first game on Monday.  The first win qualified West Central for the state tournament, and the second win kept them alive in the region tournament as they push towards a higher seed.

West Central knocked Chamberlain out of regional tournament with an 11-3 early in the day.  West Central scored all 11 runs in the final three innings.  Chamberlain scored a run in the bottom of the fourth to break a scoreless tie, but West Central got four runs in the top of the fifth, two in the sixth, and then had a five-run seventh inning.  Chamberlain only scored two times in the bottom of the seventh.

Camden McDonald had two hits and two RBIs.  Dylan Sherard had a double and two RBIs.  Dylan Stromer and Cade Vander Woude both had a single and an RBI.  Gage Nelson and Andrew Zimmer each had a hit, and Justin Zirpel had an RBI.  Owen Heath pitched 6 2/3 innings allowing three earned runs on six hits with 10 strikeouts.  Maison Schuldt pitched 1/3 of an inning and allowed just one walk.

West Central then took on the defending state champions, Beresford, in the final game of the night in Humboldt.  After Beresford scored in the top of the first inning, West Central took control of the game in the bottom of the first and never looked back.  West Central scored five times in the bottom of the first.  Each team scored a run in the second inning putting West Central in front 6-2.  West Central then exploded for 11 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to end the game on the 15-run rule.

Zirpel had three hits, including a triple, and five RBIs.  Stromer had two hits and three RBIs.  Zimmer had a hit and three RBIs.  McDonald had a hit and an RBI.  Sherard had a hit.  Vander Woude and Schuldt each had an RBI.  Derrick Renken pitched all four innings allowing just two runs, one earned, on one hit with four walks and six strikeouts.

Dell Rapids 16U Out of Region Tournament, but Qualifies for State Tournament

With only 12 total teams registered in 16U Class A in South Dakota VFW baseball, it was decided to break those teams into two regions of six teams each.  Four of the six teams in each region would qualify for the state tournament.

After a loss in the opening round on Monday, Dell Rapids 16U rebounded with a 13-2 victory over Tea in their first game on Tuesday, July 27th.  That win put Dell Rapids into the state tournament as one of the top four teams from Region 2A.

Tea scored first in the bottom of the first inning, but Dell Rapids then scored 10 unanswered runs over the next three innings, including an eight-run top of the fourth.  Dell Rapids would get three more runs in the top of the fifth inning.

Braden Fersdahl had two hits, a triple and a double, with two RBIs.  Brayden Pankonen had a hit and three RBIs.  Joe Rechtenbaugh had a double and two RBIs.  CJ Smith finished with a single and two RBIs.  Will Jaton, Sutton Williams and Ethan Kringen all had a hit in the game as well.  Jaton pitched the five inning complete game allowing two runs, neither of them earned, on two hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.

After the win earlier in the day, Dell Rapids faced Volga in the final game of the day at Rickeman Field.  Volga jumped out to a six run lead after the first two innings.  Dell Rapids tried to climb back into the game getting a run in the top of the third, two more in the fourth, and one in the fifth to cut the lead to 6-4.  Volga, however, scored three times in the bottom of the fifth inning and  then had another three-run inning in the bottom of the sixth for a 12-5 victory.

John Mortrude had three hits and an RBI.  Aiden Boechler had two hits, one of them a double, and two RBIs.  Williams had two hits.  Pankonen also had a hit in the game.  Jaton finished with an RBI.  Fersdahl pitched three innings allowing six earned runs on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts.  Smith pitched three innings also allowing six earned runs on five hits and two walks.

Dell Rapids will play in the 2021 South Dakota 16U Class A state tournament held in Madison August 6th through 8th.

Defending State Champs End Tri-Valley 16U Season

The defending 16U Class A state champions, Beresford, held off a late rally by Tri-Valley for a 10-9 win in an elimination game at the Region 1A tournament in Humboldt on Tuesday, July 27th.  The loss suffered by Tri-Valley ended their 2021 season.

Beresford scored four times right away in the top of the first inning, but Tri-Valley had a big first inning as well.  Noah Haynes had an RBI single, and Lawson Louiseau had a two-run single to pull Tri-Valley within a run at 4-3.  Tri-Valley tied the game in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI ground out by Haynes. Beresford took the lead again in the top of the fourth with two runs.  Haynes reached on an error in the bottom of the fifth that also scored Cole Focken, and Tri-Valley trailed 6-5 after five innings.

Beresford took advantage of a walk, hit by pitch, and an error with two outs in the top of the seventh and scored four times to take a 10-5 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning.  Tri-Valley put together a rally of their own.  Mason Hendrixson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Louiseau drove home a run with a single, Haynes scored on a wild pitch, and then Hendrixson scored on a wild pitch to pull Tri-Valley within a run, 10-9.  With two outs and the trying run on third and the winning run on second, Beresford was able to get a pop-up in the infield for the third out to end the game.

Louiseau had three hits and three RBIs.  Everett Althoff had three hits.  Focken finished with two hits.  Haynes had a hit and two RBIs, and Hendrixson had an RBI.  Beau Keith pitched an inning allowing four earned runs on two hits with four walks and a strikeout.  Haynes pitched 5 2/3 innings allowing six runs, two earned, on four hits with three walks and four strikeouts.  Aidan Heitkamp pitched 1/3 of an inning.

Tri-Valley 16U Can’t Stop Dakota Valley

The Tri-Valley 16U team ran into a tough Dakota Valley team in the opening round of the Region 1A baseball tournament in Humboldt on Monday, July 26th.  Dakota Valley took the win 8-1.

Dakota Valley got a run in the top of the second and another in the top of the third for a 2-0 lead.  Everett Althoff reached on an error that scored Tanner Van Asselt to cut the lead in half at 2-1.  That’s as close as Tri-Valley would get however.  Dakota Valley got a run in the top of the fifth, three more in the top of the sixth, and two in the seventh for the win.

Tri-Valley was held to just three hits in the game.  Noah Haynes, Mason Hendrixson, and Holden Rise all had singles.  Kaden Egger pitched 5 1/3 innings allowing four runs, two earned, on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts.  Beau Keith pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up two runs, one earned, on a hit with two walks and a strikeout.  Aidan Heitkamp pitched one inning and allowed two earned runs on three hits.
