The Dell Rapids Marching Band participated in the Hobo Day parade on Saturday, October 5th, in Brookings.  The Dell Rapids band received second place in Class A.  Milbank received first place.  The other bands in Class A were Sioux Valley, Miller, and Flandreau

The Dell Rapids Marching Band had to overcome some big obstacles in Brookings.  First of all four students were missing due to injury or prior family commitments.  When the students arrived in Brookings, another student had forgotten a knee brace, but manage to march through the entire parade, playing through the pain.  To go along with those obstacles, the band had to also overcome several instrument malfunctions and a

missing group banner.

Band Director Brian Smith said, “As our time to enter the parade was quickly approaching, I could sense that the group was not focused on the long parade ahead.  After a quick ‘motivational’ speech, the band seemed to pull it together.  I was very happy with their efforts on Saturday.  I received many compliments about the band’s performance from both strangers and colleagues I spoke with during the parade.”

Congratulations to the Dell Rapids Marching Band on their second place finish at Hobo Days!

Dell Rapids St Mary Loses Close Game to Deubrook

October 5, 2013 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

DellRapidsStMaryFootballThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals lost a close and exciting game to the Deubrook Dolphins in White on Friday, October 4th, by a score of 40-38.  The battle of two of the top teams in class 9B and 9AA had a 40-minute weather delay midway through the third quarter.

Deubrook scored early on a 10-yard touchdown run by Riley Hanson with 10:47 in the first quarter to give the Dolphins a quick 6-0 lead.  The Cardinals answered right back on a 35-yard touchdown run by Josh Brown to tie the game at 6-6 with 9:32 to go in the first quarter.  Deubrook picked up another touchdown on a 67-yard run by Hanson to go ahead 14-6 at the 7:03 mark.  But Dell Rapids St Mary would tie the game with 3:07 to go in the first on a 31-yard touchdown run by Brown.  The game was tied 14-14 at the end of the first quarter.

The Dolphins scored the only touchdown of the second quarter for either team on a 5-yard pass play from Dustin Trooien to Quinn Peterson.  The extra point gave Deubrook a 21-14 lead going into halftime.

Dell Rapids St Mary struck first on a 36-yard touchdown run by Brown at the 8:19 mark of the third quarter.  The 2-point conversion was no good, and the Dolphins lead 21-20.  With 6:07 to go in the third, the game was delayed.  When play resumed, Deubrook scored with 3:17 left in the quarter on another Hanson touchdown run, this time for 77 yards.  The extra point was no good, and the Dolphins had a 27-20 lead after the third quarter.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, West Heinricy hit Ben Bunkers with a 21-yard touchdown pass.   Again, St Mary could not convert on the 2-point conversion, and again trailed by one at 27-26.  Deubrook would extend the lead again on Hanson’s 40 yard touchdown run, his fourth of the game, at the 9:35 mark.  Deubrook’s extra point attempt was no good, and the Dolphins lead 33-26.  Dell Rapids St Mary would score about four minutes later on a 5-yard touchdown run by Jacob Glazier.  The 2-point conversion failed yet again, and the Cardinals were within one point at 33-32.  With 4:25 in the game, Hanson found the end zone for the fifth time on a 5-yard touchdown run.  The extra point was good, and that gave Deubrook a 40-32 lead.  Dell Rapids St Mary would score one more touchdown with 1:08 to go on a 13-yard touchdown run by Bunkers.  But once again, the 2-point conversion failed, and the Cardinals trailed by two points at 40-38.  The onside kick attempted went out of bounds, and Deubrook ran out the clock for the win.

Brown had 28 carries for 200 yards and three touchdowns.  Bunkers had 17 carries for 126 yards and a touchdown.  Heinricy went 3-6 passing for 45 yards and a touchdown.  Defensively for the Cardinals, Christian Schnieders had 6.5 tackles and one forced fumble.  Bunkers had five tackles and a fumble recovery.  Brown had 5.5 tackles and a fumble recovery.  Jared Scholten finished the game with 4.5 tackles.

Head coach Ross Flemmer said, “The kids played hard, they kept fighting back and worked hard the whole game.  Our offensive line did an outstanding job of opening holes for our backs.  Defensively we had some trouble bottling up their running game, but came up big on several 3rd and 4th downs and got some turnovers from them. I was very proud of how our kids handled themselves in the face of adversity.”

Dell Rapids St Mary falls to 4-1 on the year.  The Cardinals will host Estelline on Friday, October 11th.

Patricia (Maguire) Kenner

October 1, 2013 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Pat Maguire KennerPatricia Eileen (Maguire) Kenner was born July 9, 1929, in Triumph, MN. She passed away Sept. 28, 2013, at Fountain Springs Health Care.

Patricia was the daughter of Jerry and Ethel Maguire, the second of seven children. In her early years the family moved from Triumph to Brandt, SD, then to Brookings, Dell Rapids, and Rapid City. Following graduation at Rapid City High School, she attended the University of South Dakota and graduated from St. John’s McNamara School of Nursing (now Rapid City Regional Hospital) as a registered nurse. She was then hired as the night supervisor on the OB floor in Rapid City.

She and Robert “Bob” Kenner married in 1952, enjoying 61 years together. They resided in Kansas for two years while Robert worked for Gulf Oil. It was in Kansas that their first son, Mark, was born. Soon after Mark’s birth they returned to Rapid City for Robert to manage the family business, Howard’s Body Shop. The couple’s next six children were born in Rapid City. Pat and Bob celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2012, with family and friends.

Pat utilized her RN degree while raising her seven young children. During the 1970’s she worked the night shift at the Rapid City Rehabilitation Hospital to enable her to tend to her family’s needs during the day. She was a very creative and accomplished cook; creative in that she and Bob were able to feed their growing family well on the wild game which Bob hunted or fished. Each of her culinary creations was a work of love.

Patricia devoted her life to public service. She became active on the West Junior High PTA, the League of Women Voters and various organizations. She served two consecutive terms in the SD State Legislature. One of her most memorable experiences was traveling to China in 1975 for five weeks with a group of 24 legislators from 10 states. She served on the RC School Board for nine years, and on numerous committees dealing with vocational and special education, community health, and the arts. She valued her service on the Community Health Center (CHC) of the Black Hills. She was instrumental in starting the Rapid City Community Health Board which evolved into the CHC of Black Hills. She was president of the West River Foundation, serving the needs of those with mental and physical challenges in West River. She has been honored with the South Dakota American Association of University Women’s Equity Award, the South Dakota Vocational Education Association’s Award of Merit, and Western Dakota Vocational Technical Institute’s Distinguished Service Award. She fervently believed that the education of children is the most important charge that a community has for its future.

Patricia is survived by her husband, Robert Kenner; brothers, Dick Maguire, Rapid City, Tom Maguire, Bailey, CO, and Paul Maguire, Rapid City; six children, Scott (Mary) Kenner, Rapid City, Kristen (Ken) Kenner, Reno, NV, Robyn (Kelly) Brown, Spokane, WA, Terese Kenner, Sioux Falls, Todd (Sally) Kenner, Rapid City, and Paul (Kim) Kenner, Las Vegas, NV; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Gerald and Ethel Maguire; three siblings, Mary Gregory, Jim Maguire, and Frances Quasney; her eldest son, Mark; and two great-grandchildren, James and Coen.  Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home.  Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1012 Soo San Drive.  A memorial in Pat’s name has been set up at Children’s Care, 7110 Jordan Drive, www.cchs.org .

Patricia cherished her Irish heritage handed down from her dad, Jerry Maguire. She will be missed but lives on through her family and those who she has influenced through devotion to education.
