Cardinal Girls Basketball Falls to Centerville

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls basketball team lost to the Centerville Tornadoes on Tuesday, December 16th, by a score of 64-43.  The Cardinals led early in the ball game.  St Mary had a five-point lead with 4:51 to go in the first quarter, but the Tornadoes were able to close out the first quarter with the lead 18-17.  Centerville was able to increase their lead in the middle two quarters.  The Tornadoes outscores the Cardinals 15-6 in the second quarter to take a 33-23 lead into halftime.  The Tornadoes outscores the Cardinals 20-9 in the third quarter to push the lead to 53-32 at the end of the third quarter.  Both teams scored 11 points in the final quarter.

St Mary finished the night shooting 30% (19-64) from the field.  The Cardinals were just 1-6 from three-point area and shot 4-13 from the free-throw line.  St Mary finished the game with 33 total rebounds.

Ally Mullaney led St Mary with 19 points and 12 rebounds.  Kennedi Mullaney finished with six points.  Lexi Klein added four points.  Jackie Wolles pulled down five rebounds for the Cardinals.

St Mary falls to 0-3 on the year.  The Cardinals will host DeSmet on Thursday, December 18th, in their first home game of the year.

Quarrier Wrestlers Earn Split in Madison

QuarriersThe Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team earned one match win and were defeated in a match in Madison in the first Dak-12 meet of the year on Tuesday, December 16th.  Lennox defeated Dell Rapids 54.00 to 30.00.  Dell Rapids beat Tea Area 55.00-18.00.  Other scores from the Dak-12 meet in Madison included Madison over Tea Area 77.00 – 6.00 and Madison over Lennox 49.00 – 29.00.

Dell Rapids Schools Participate in Christmas for our Kids

ChristmasForKidsCandyCaneThe Dell Rapids School District spent the week of December 8th – 12th collecting items for the 2014 Dell Rapids “Christmas for our Kids”.    Items were collected from students and staff throughout the week.  Each day was a different donation category.

Monday was “Make a Donation Monday”.  Monetary donations and gift cards were collected.  Tuesday was “Tag & Tape Tuesday”.  Gift tags and tape for wrapping were collected.  Wednesday was “Wrap it up Wednesday” in which new rolls of wrapping paper or other decorating items were collected.  Thursday was “Thankful Thursday”.  Staff and students brought in items they wished were under their tree to give to someone in the program.  Friday was “Festive Friday”.  The final day was for batteries for the donated toys.

The school district had great participation and support throughout the week.

“Christmas for our Kids” is a community project that is lead by the local ESA women’s organization.  Last year the project was able to deliver gifts to 95 children in 42 families.  Along with the event at Dell Rapids School last week, the project also had other areas of support this year.  Adopt-a-Family, the Angel Tree, and monetary donations have been accepted throughout the holiday season.

Stephen Van Dam

Stephen Van DamStephen Van Dam, 65, formerly of Dell Rapids, passed away on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at the Golden Living Center in Salem, SD. Stephen will be buried in a private ceremony on December 22, 2014. A celebration of Stephen’s life will take place on December 22, at 11:00 a.m. at The American Legion in Dell Rapids, SD.  Stephen Henry Van Dam Sr. born February 27th 1949 in Flandreau, SD passed away peacefully December 13th 2014 at Salem, South Dakota. Stephen was a member of the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe. He served his country proudly in the Army from November 6th 1968 to October 20th 1970. Stephen fought in the Vietnam War from November 13th 1969 to October 19th 1970. On October 20th 1970 he was honorably discharged.

 Stephen enjoyed being a member of the local shooting club, hunting, fishing, cooking & being an EMT. He loved taking his beloved dog “soup bone” for rides on his scooter.

Stephen is survived by his son Stephen Jr. and daughter-in-law Desi Van Dam of Black Hawk, SD; his daughter Amy and son-in-law Matt Oppedhal of Helena, MT; daughter Lindsay Van Dam of Gilbert, Arizona; and son Brandon and daughter-in-law Cassandra Van Dam of Mesa, Arizona. Sisters: Bobbie (Dick) Christensen, Jeanette (Gene) Arnold, Kathy (Jerry) Benning, Laurie (Bill) Arbes, Shelly Buhr, Kristi (Dean) Madison, Monica (Dale) VanDeWiele , Marilyn (Rick) Williams, Marsha (David) Schlueter, Diane Van Dam (Willis), Tracy Van Dam (John). Brothers: Doug (Nerda) Van Dam & Robert Jr (Kristine) Van Dam. Four Grandsons and four Granddaughters and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Robert Sr. & Goldie Van Dam, brother Rodney & sister Valerie.

Quarrier Boys Basketball Wins Season Opener

DRvsWC_BBB_12-12-14The Dell Rapids Quarrier boys basketball team won their season opener against the West Central Trojans on Friday, December 12th, in Dell Rapids.  The Quarriers took an early lead to start the game and led 17-11 after the first quarter.  West Central was able to cut into the lead by one point by halftime, but Dell Rapids still lead 31-26 at halftime.

Dell Rapids was able to maintain a four-to-seven point lead through most of the third quarter.  By the end of the third quarter, the Quarriers had extended their lead to nine points to 46-37.  The Quarriers were able to pull away in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Trojans 14-9 to coast to a 14-point win at 60-46.

Dell Rapids finished the game shooting 34% (22-65) from the field.  The shot 22% (4-18) from three-point area and just 52% (12-23) from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers finished with 38 team rebounds, 12 assists, eight turnovers and eight steals.

Ty Hoglund finished the game with a game-high 25 points and also had six rebounds.  Riley Schmidt added 11 points, seven rebounds, and two assists.  Adam Karst finished the game with nine points.  Ben Hammer had eight points and pulled down 13 rebounds.

Dell Rapids starts the season 1-0 on the year, and will travel to Tea to take on the Tea Area Titans on Friday, December 19th.

Dell Rapids City Council Meeting: 12/15/14

The Dell Rapids City Council will meet in regular session on Monday, December 15th, at 7:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers.  Some of the items on the agenda include public hearing for first reading of ordinance 814, outdoor event permit request, second reading and adoption of ordinance 813, on sale/off sale liquor licenses and operating agreements, and the administrator’s report.  The full agenda can be found by clicking here.

Estelline Spoils Season Opener for Cardinals

DRSM LogoThe Estelline Redmen defeated the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team on Friday, December 12th, in Estelline by a score of 55-41.

The Cardinals had two players finish the game with double-figures.  Matt Farmer finished with 14 points.  Noah Fiegen added 10 points and six rebounds.  Christian Schnieders added 10 rebounds for St Mary.  Estelline was led by Max Hausman with 13 points.  Nolan Sonnenburg had 12 points, and Trevor Gorder had 10 points.  Ethan Kurka finished with 15 rebounds in the game.

The Cardinals start the season with an 0-1 record.  St Mary will travel to Bridgewater to take on Bridgewater-Emery on Monday, December 15th.

Estelline Hangs on Against Cardinals

DRSM LogoThe Estelline Redmen hung on to defeat the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals in girls basketball action on Thursday, December 11th, in Estelline.  Estelline jumped out to a 13-5 lead after the first quarter.  They were able to extend the lead to 29-13 at halftime.

The Cardinals were able to cut the lead down to 37-23 by the end of the third quarter.  Dell Rapids St Mary also outscored Estelline 15-11 in the final quarter, but it wasn’t enough as Estelline hung on for the 48-38 win.

The Cardinals shot 29% (15-51) from the field in the game.  They were 33% (2-6) from three-point area and shot 43% (6-14) from the free throw line.  St Mary had a total of 39 team rebounds and 23 turnovers.

Ally Mullaney led the Cardinals with 22 points and 15 rebounds.  Lindsey Wolles added nine points, and Jackie Wolles tossed in four points.  Estelline was led by Abbi Benning with 15 points.  Leannah Tekrony had 12 points, and Makensie Saathoff had 11 points.

The Cardinals fall to 0-1 in the DVC and 0-2 overall on the year.  St Mary will travel to Centerville on Tuesday, December 16th.

Storehouse Thanksgiving Food Basket Giveaway a Huge Success

The Dell Rapids Storehouse Community Food Pantry held their annual Thanksgiving Food basket giveaway on Saturday, November 22nd.  They gave away 66 baskets.  The giveaway was accomplished by the wonderful donations of food and money, plus the many wonderful volunteers that worked to put the baskets together.  The Storehouse had volunteers from age 2 to 92 all coming together to put the baskets together and deliver them.
