Mudcats Beat PBR at Take Me Out to the Ballgame

The Dell Rapids Mudcats defeated Dell Rapids PBR during the annual “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” on Friday, June 24th at Rickeman Field. The game was one of the events that kicked off the Quarry Days weekend in Dell Rapids.

The Mudcats got on the board in the first inning after Aaron Johnson drove home Jimmy Bauer. Bauer then drove in the next Mudcat run in the second inning with an RBI single driving in Colin Karst. Nate Henry hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend the lead to 4-0. The Mudcats would add two more runs in the seventh and went on to win 6-0.

Karst earned the win pitching seven innings of shut out baseball. Karst only gave up two hits in his seven innings while striking out five batters. Bauer and Johnson each had three hits. Henry had two hits, and Grant Olson, Mark Houck, and Karst each had one hit. Bo Behrend, Kevin Krull, and Zane Schumacher had hits for PBR. Preston Davis took the loss.

The Mudcats earned another win over the weekend by defeating Humboldt 8-0 on Sunday, June 26th. The Mudcats are currently in second place in the Cornbelt League standings with a 7-2 league record. PBR dropped another game on Sunday, losing 7-1 to Canova. PBR is still looking for its first league win.

Floyd Callison

Floyd A. Callison, 90, entered heaven’s gates on June 21, 2016 at the Good Samaritan Village. Lois Mae (Bunkers) Schwebach

Lois Mae Schwebach, 89, of Dell Rapids died Thursday, June 23, 2016 in Sioux Falls at the home of her daughter. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:00 AM Monday, June 27, 2016 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Dell Rapids. Burial will be in the St. Mary Catholic Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be from 3-5:00 PM Sunday with a Wake Service at 5:00 PM at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Dell Rapids. On-line condolences may be left at Minnehaha Funeral Home.

Lois Mae Bunkers was born March 9, 1927 in Dell Rapids to parents Emil and Leona (Full) Bunkers. She grew up near Dell Rapids and attended St. Mary Grade School, graduated from St. Mary High School and then attended SDSU.

Lois married George M. Schwebach August 19, 1952 in Dell Rapids. She along with George owned and operated George’s Mens Wear and The Fitting Stool. George died December 21, 2008.

She enjoyed playing cards, building puzzles, and was an avid fan of the Minnesota Twins. She was a member of the St. Mary Catholic Church and Altar Society.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Carol (Carl) Thomassen, Tea; Joan Schwebach, Sioux Falls; Emily (Tim) Murphy, Dell Rapids; Lee Ann Freshour, Coeur d’Alene, ID; Mark (Tami) Schwebach, Middleton, WI; Jim (Laurie) Schwebach, West Des Moines, IA; Grace (Rick) Hoil, Sioux Falls; her grandchildren, Liam, Brielle, Conner, Victoria, Evan, Justin, Nicole, Joseph, Chynna, Lindsey, Kyle, Eric, Brian, Rachael, Nathan, Brady, Maggie, Michael, Matt and Jennifer; her great grandchildren, Brooklyn, Nellie, Lucy, Riley, Braxton, Emma and Cedar; her brothers, Vince (Phyllis) Bunkers, Dell Rapids; Yvo (Stella) Bunkers, Dell Rapids; and Terry (Emily) Bunkers, Buckeye, AZ; and a sister in law, Monica (Eldyn) Streff, Overland Park, KS.

Charlotte Jacobson

Charlotte L. Jacobson, 93, of Dell Rapids, passed away on Thursday, June 23, 2016 at her home. Her funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 27, 2016 at Messiah Lutheran Church, rural Flandreau. Visitation with the family present will be from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 26, 2016 at Kahler Funeral Home. On-line condolences may be left at Kahler Funeral Home.

Charlotte was born on January 12, 1923 in Flandreau to Walter and Rose Stover. She attended Hess rural grade school and graduated from Flandreau High School in 1940. She received a teaching certificate from Eastern State in Madison, SD and taught at Hess school for two years. Charlotte was married to Howard Jacobson on November 24, 1946 in Sioux Falls. They farmed in Blinsmon township until retiring in 1985 and continued to live on the farm. Howard died on September 14, 1990. She moved off the farm to Dell Rapids on October 1, 2011.

Charlotte was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, WELCA, Messiah quilters, WELCA Bible Study and treasurer of Bethania Oslo Cemetery Association. She also belong to the Trent Senior Citizens, Moody Rustlers Club, and several card clubs.

She is survived by her son, Robert Jacobson and his wife, Joy of rural Harrisburg; her two daughters, Charlene Miller and her husband, Doug of Deadwood and Linda Adams of Garden City, KS; her six grandchildren, Heather Ahrendt and her husband, Jason, Aaron Jacobson and his wife, Amber, Kenan Miller and his wife, Dawn, Leah Brink and her fiance’e, Justin Hyde, Anna Maruska and her husband, Joe, Daniel Bielfeldt and his wife, Megan; her eight great grandchildren Gabrielle and Lincoln Ahrendt, Lexi Job, Alysia Hunter, Madeline and David Brink, Clara and Elijah Maruska.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Walt and Rose Stover; her husband, Howard; and her grandson, Kyle Miller.

Two from Dell Rapids Playing in SDHS All-Star Football Game

Two football players from Dell Rapids will be playing in the South Dakota High School Football All-Star game this year. Josh Brown from Dell Rapids St Mary will play for the Red Team and Griffin Ellison will play for the Blue Team.

The game this year will be held on Saturday, July 9th, at 1:00 p.m. at the Dakota Dome in Vermillion. This is the first time in the game’s history that it will not be held in Aberdeen. The players will report to Vermillion on July 6th for practices and events leading up to the game. There are 84 athletes from around the state participating this year.Full Rosters

Deb (Dressen) Bicknese

Deborah Ann Dressen Bicknese of Dell Rapids passed away unexpectedly on June 17th, 2016 at the age of 63. A memorial visitation is scheduled for Thursday, June 23rd with the family present from 5-7:00pm at Minnehaha Funeral Home at 104 E. 4th St Dell Rapids, SD 57022. A memorial funeral service is scheduled for Friday, June 24th at 10:00am at the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids at 701 Orleans Ave, Dell Rapids, SD 57022, with cake and coffee to follow. Deb is survived by her parents, Leonard and Mary Dressen of Dell Rapids, SD; sister, Kim Shefte (Stuart) of Dell Rapids, SD; husband, Leo Bicknese of Dell Rapids; children, Tim Verhey (Jennifer) of Parker, SD, Tom Verhey (Jaimi) of Sioux Falls, SD, William “Zach” Langner (Abby) of Omaha, NE and Katherine Cox (Brian) of Omaha, NE; step-sons, Robert Bicknese (Amanda) of Mountain Home, ID and Larry Bicknese of Dell Rapids, SD; 8 grandchildren and 2 step-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her brother, Robert “Bob” Dressen of Viborg, SD.

Deb was born on March 3rd, 1953 in Dell Rapids, SD to Leonard and Mary Dressen. She graduated from Dell Rapids High School in 1971, the University of South Dakota in 1983 with an associate’s degree in Nursing, and Augustana University in 2005 with a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing. She married the love of her life, Leo in 2009.

Deb worked as a Registered Nurse for 22 years and retired from the VA Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD in 2010. She enjoyed camping with her family, karaoke, traveling to new places, four wheeling in the Black Hills, trucking with her husband Leo, attending Renaissance festivals and sewing. She was also very creative and crafty. In 2015, Deb opened her own business, Hobby Run Amuck, in Downtown Dell Rapids where she sold many of her handmade crafts.

Deb was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. She loved spending time with her children and the joys of her life, her grandchildren.

Urban Schwebach

Urban August Schwebach left this life as he lived it, with ferocity to stay with family, friends and the farm. He lost his battle with renal failure and congestive heart failure the day before Father’s Day which somehow seems fitting as he was a great husband, father and grandfather. Urban or “Urb”, as he was known, was born on June 9, 1927 at Dell Rapids, SD to Joseph and Anna (Kottman) Schwebach.

He received his education at St. Mary’s School in Dell Rapids. After completing the eighth grade he was off to begin doing what he loved most, farming and hard work. He met the true love of his life, Rosemary Thielsen, and they were married on October 1, 1952 at Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church in Flandreau. They began farming southeast of Flandreau and in the spring of 1960 purchased a farm northeast of Flandreau where they have continued to live. Urb was a true entrepreneur and started several businesses to compliment the highs and lows of farming. He did custom corn shelling, combining, and he was most known for stack moving and hay grinding. He turned the hay grinding business over to one of his sons. The farming tradition continues to be carried on by his other son. Urb enjoyed working the ground, was happy when in a tractor and most happy when surrounded by family. Raising cattle – raising sheep – raising crops – raising his family: that was Urb, happy and hardworking. Urb was a member of Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church.

Urb is survived by his wife Rosemary, 3 children; Joe (Mary) Schwebach, Flandreau; Linda Schwebach, Flandreau; Tom (Marilyn) Schwebach, Egan; 4 grandchildren, Nicole, Alyson and Jared Schwebach, and Elizabeth (Nikolay) Typhina, 1 great-grandchild, Felix; 4 sisters, Mary Ann Loiseau, Egan; Helen Hattervig, Dell Rapids; Joan Brown, Summersville, WV; and Clare Hubert, Long Island, NY. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, Isabella Schmidt and Cordula Williamson and a brother Joseph.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June, 23, 2016 at Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00 – 7:00 pm with a 7:00 pm Rosary at Skroch Funeral Chapel. On-line condolences may be left at Skroch Funeral Chapel.

Verne Jorgenson

Verne F. Jorgenson peacefully passed away at the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center on Friday, June 17, 2016, the day of his 90th birthday. His funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 22, 2016 in the Kahler Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior to the start of the service. Verne was born to Fred and Louise Jorgenson on June 17, 1926, the youngest of six children. He attended Hunt Country School, District #10 for eight years and graduated from Trent High School in 1944. Verne served in World War II in the US Navy on board the USS Yellowstone, a Destroyer Tender from 1945-1946. After his honorable discharge, he returned to the family farm by Trent and farmed with his father. He retired in 1985 but continued to live on his farm until 2013 when he became a resident of Orchard Hills Assisted Living. He moved to Dells Nursing and Rehab Center in May of 2016.

Survivors included six nieces and nephews, Lauren (Alberta) Anderson, LeRoy (Joyce) Anderson and Charlotte (Jerry) Weiland of Dell Rapids, Larry (Ada) Jorgenson and Marlene (Bill) Husaboe of Trent, and Darrel (Christy) Jorgenson of Loveland, CO and his many great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Lynn (Celia) Jorgenson, Donald (Martha) Jorgenson, and his sisters, Evelyn (Louis) Ross, Inez (Alvin) Anderson and Bernice (John) Tinsley and their son, David.

Three from Dell Rapids Qualify for State Rodeo

Three rodeo athletes from Dell Rapids qualified for the 2016 South Dakota State High School Rodeo held Wednesday, June 15th through Saturday, June 18th in Belle Fourche.

Sutton Adams (DRHS) qualified in tiedown roping. S. Adams finished 28th with 16.00 points. Cheyenne Adams (DRHS) qualified in breakaway roping and team roping. C. Adams finished 104th in team roping with 5.00 points and finished 63rd in breakaway roping with 6.00 points. Kayla Wolles (DRSM) qualified in goat tying and pole bending. Wolles finished 37th in goat tying with 11.00 points and 49th in pole bending with 9.00 points.

Donna (Story) Bendt

Donna L. Bendt passed away Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at Riverview Healthcare Community, Flandreau. Donna was born January 18, 1931 in Lincoln, Co., Minnesota to B.A. and Margaret (Scofield) Story. She received her early education in country school and graduated from Flandreau High School in 1950.

Donna was married on August 27, 1950 at Flandreau, SD to Loren Bendt and they farmed at White, SD. In 1957 they returned to Moody County to farm until moving on to the Bendt home farm in 1973. She worked at Dakota Industries for many years, helped Ardyce Samp hang drapes and then worked in the laundry at Riverview Manor in Flandreau from 1987 until retiring in 2011. Loren preceded Donna in death on December 9, 2015. Donna was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, WELCA, Moonbeam Extension Club and enjoyed fishing and going to the casino.

She is survived by 2 children, Patricia Blackketter, Elkton, Doug Bendt, Flandreau, granddaughter, Krystal (Barry) Wingfield, Mankato, MN, 4 great-grandchildren, Dylan, Caden, Kayl and Khiley, 2 brothers, Roger (Carolyn) Story, Dell Rapids, Jerry (Walberga) Regensburg, Germany and numerous nieces and nephews. Donna was preceded in death by her husband, parents, daughter-in-law B.J. Bendt, and son-in-law Robert Blackketter, 1 brother, Kenny, 1 sister, Dorothy and an infant sister.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 18, 2016 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Flandreau, with burial in Union Cemetery, Flandreau. On-line condolences may be left at Skroch Funeral Chapel.
