Elaine SchroedermeierElaine Schroedermeier age 93 formerly of Chancellor, SD, passed away Tuesday May 2, 2017 in Sioux Falls. Family will greet friends from 5:00- 7:00 pm with a prayer service at 7:00 pm Wednesday at Miller South Funeral Chapel, 7400 S. Minnesota Avenue in Sioux Falls. Funeral services begin at 2:00 pm Thursday at Chancellor Reformed Church, with burial at the Church Cemetery.  On-line condolences may be left at the Miller Funeral Home website.

Elaine Ruth Vietor, daughter of Jakob and Genevieve (Lowery) Vietor, was born February 16, 1924 on the Vietor homestead in rural Turner County, SD. She was very proud of her Turner County heritage and enjoyed reminiscing about the old days and growing up there.

Elaine attended country school District #20, 3 miles south of Chancellor, SD. She graduated from Chancellor High School and received her teaching degree from Eastern Normal College in Madison, SD. She then taught in several Turner County Schools before and after her marriage. Her first teaching assignment was at Finley #5, located 1 ½ miles east of Parker, SD. She also taught for many years at the elementary school in Chancellor.

Elaine was united in marriage to Donald Schroedermeier on June 28, 1945 in Chancellor. In addition to teaching she was an ambitious farm wife. The couple settled on their farm and lived for many years 2 miles north of Davis, SD; until retiring and moving into Chancellor in 2000.

She was a faithful member of the Chancellor Reformed Church and was very active in women’s groups and was a Sunday School teacher.

Elaine resided in Chancellor until 2013 at which time she moved to Primrose Retirement Center for several years and most recently at Southridge Health Care.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Jane (Mark) Hansen, and Dan (Myra), all of Sioux Falls, Loren (Glenda), of Harrisburg, SD; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild; her brother George (Audrey) Vietor, Chancellor; two sister’s in-law, Arda Hoffman, Yankton, SD, and Karen Vietor, Dell Rapids, SD; special friends, Ken and Jo Plucker; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents Jakob and Genevieve Vietor, her husband Donald, sister Mavis, brother Rodney and daughter in-law, Linda.

SiouxperCon in Sioux Falls May 12th-14th

From its humble beginnings as a question posed on Facebook, SiouxperCon morphed into an event that aims to celebrate all nerdoms in a safe, educational, and inclusive environment. SiouxperCon celebrates several mediums – comic books, cosplay, anime, board games, video games, science fiction and fantasy. A non-profit event, net proceeds from the convention benefit REACH Literacy and the JY6 Foundation.

Gia Boyum

Gia BoyumGia Boyum, 47, of Sioux Falls, passed away unexpectedly at her home on Thursday, April 27, 2017. Her Memorial Mass will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 4, 2017 in the Chapel of the Sacred Heart at The Cathedral of St. Joseph in Sioux Falls.  On-line condolences may be left at the Kahler Funeral Home website.

Gia was born on December 8th of 1969 to her mother Margherita J, (Marotta) Boyum and father James M Boyum (deceased) in Sioux Falls South Dakota.

She was always known for her kindness and loving heart. Gia could light up the room with her most wonderful laugh and bright beautiful smile. She loved to spend time with her many friends and family as well as her dog, Molly. Gia loved her many craft hobbies and gardening.

Gia is survived by: her mother, Margherita J. D’amato and stepfather, Dr. James A. D’amato of Newark, DE; her children, Joshua S. Boyum of Newark, DE, Brandon M. Barcus of Aberdeen, MD, Dakota L. Barcus of Quarryville, PA and Joshua R. Barcus of Virginia ; her two grandchildren, Haven Kelly and Brantley Schilling, her grandparents, James and Teresa Boyum of Dell Rapids; her aunts, Kathy and Susan Boyum and families; her uncles, Daniel, Mark and Tom Boyum and families and her extended family and many friends.

“No one could ever describe our mother in perfect words, it’s practically impossible. You really can’t put her into words to read about, but the only words to help you understand is that you truly just had to know her.”

Dells Baseball Pushes Win Streak to Four

DRvsRHTDNW_5-3-17Dells Baseball pushed their current winning streak to four games, matching their longest of the season, after a 10-2 win over Redfield/Hitchcock/Tulare/Doland/Northwestern on Wednesday, May 3rd, at Rickeman Field in Dell Rapids.

Dell Rapids scored first in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single by Josh Roemen scoring Keegan Miller.  Dell Rapids pushed the lead to 3-0 with two more runs in the bottom of the third inning.  Seth Anderson had an RBI single scoring Nate McKee.  Elijah Story drove home Anderson on another RBI single.  R/H/T/D/NW closed the gap to 3-2 scoring two runs in the top of the fourth inning.  Dell Rapids, however, broke the game open with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Miller had an RBI single, Roemen had an RBI sacrifice fly, and Logan Ruesink scored on a wild pitch. Dells scored four more in the bottom of the sixth inning.  McKee scored on a throw after a fly out, Anderson scored on an RBI walk to Eddie Price, and Carter Gullickson had an RBI single that also scored Ruesink on the throw.

Gullickson went 4-4 with a double and two RBIs in the game.  McKee, Miller, and Anderson all had two hits in the game.  Story and Roemen also collected hits.  Roemen had two RBIs, and Story, Price, Ellingson, Miller, and Anderson all had an RBI.  Price started the game on the mound for Dell Rapids pitching four innings while giving up two earned runs on three hits while giving up three walks and striking out two.  Gullickson pitched the final three innings giving up just two hits while striking out three.

Dell Rapids (9-4) will host Wolsey/Wessington on Thursday, May 4th, in a varsity only game.

Dell Rapids Student Honored at Banquet in Pierre

MikaylaDeNoonAwardA Dell Rapids High School student was honored as one of the best and brightest from the Class of 2017.  Mikayla DeNoon, along with others from across the state, were honored for their academic achievements at the 27th Annual Academic Excellence Banquet in Pierre on Monday, April 24th.

In conjunction with Governor Dennis Daugaard, the Associated School Boards of South Dakota invited more than 200 students, who were identified as the top one percent of their senior class, from the state’s public, private, and tribal schools, to celebrate their academic accomplishments.

“These students represent the best and the brightest students in South Dakota,” ASBSD President Anita Peterson said.  “They have strived for and accomplished academic excellence.”

“It is a group with untold talent and skill, a group with ideas and creativity abound; a group we hope become the next generation of leaders of our great state.”

Gov. Daugaard echoed Peterson’s hope, encouraging the students to appreciate all South Dakota offers.

“I hope you’ll consider a career right here in South Dakota,” Gov. Daugaard appealed.  “Have your dreams and follow them where they may lead, but don’t underestimate the value of what you have here.”

The governor pushed students not to underestimate themselves, either.

“Believe in yourself.  Have faith in yourself,” Gov. Daugaard implored.  “Almost any path you choose will lead to something you’re successful at.”

The event was sponsored by the South Dakota Board of Regents, the South Dakota Community Foundation, and the South Dakota Education Association.  The Philip High School Band provided musical entertainment.

New Dell Rapids City Council Takes Office

During the last regular Dell Rapids City Council meeting held on Monday, May 1st, the new city council took office.  Mayor Earley, Alderman Bill Schmidt, Alderman Barry Berg, and Alderman Bob Mier each took an Oath of Office for their new terms with the city.

Alderman Mark Crisp was voted the President of the council.  Alderman Mike Geraets was voted the Vice President.  Mayor Earley recommended Crisp, Schmidt, and Alderman Gary Haak be appointed to the Finance and Utilities Committee.  Alderman James Borchert, Alderman Mike Sterud, and Berg were appointed to the Policy and Procedures Committee.  Geraets was appointed to the Minnehaha County Economic Development Association and Dell Rapids Economic Development Corporation.  Mier was appointed as the Dell Rapids Library Board Liason.  Sterud was appointed as the Dell Rapids Chamber of Commerce Board Liason.

All the appointments made by Mayor Earley were approved by the council.

Prior to the new council taking office, the previous council approved malt beverage license renewals for Dell Rapids Pizza Ranch, T&C, T&C’s Other Place, and Shopko.

Quarrier Girls Golf has Two Place in Top 15

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier girls golf team placed fourth as a team at the Dell Rapids Invite held at Rocky Run Golf Course in Dell Rapids on Wednesday, May 3rd.  The Quarriers finished with a team score of 388.  Canton placed first with a team score of 364.  Sioux Falls Christian was second with a 373, and Lennox finished third with a 378.

Two Quarrier golfers finished in the top 15 individually.  Paige Sterud placed sixth with a round of 89 on the day.  Kaitlyn Greenhoff finished 12th with a round of 94.  Rose Habager finished the day with a 105, and Olivia Downs finished with a round of 100.

Dell Rapids will be at the West Central Invite held at Central Valley Golf Course on Monday, May 8th.

Quarrier Girls and Boys Track Teams Finish 2nd in Lennox

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier girls and boys track teams both finished second at the LenWood Invitational Track Meet on Tuesday, May 2nd in Lennox.  The girls teams finished with 129.5 points.  Sioux Falls Christian won the girls title with 169 points.  Lennox was third with 115 points.  The top the places were the same for the boys standings.  Sioux Falls Christian was first with 207.5 points.  Dell Rapids was second with 179.5 points, and Lennox was third with 123 points.

The Quarrier track teams will be at the Howard Wood Relays in Sioux Falls on Friday, May 5th, and Saturday, May 6th.

Alice Hansen

Alice HansenAlice Hansen, 91, of Dell Rapids, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 1, 2017 in her home. Her Memorial Mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 4, 2017 in St. Mary Catholic Church, Dell Rapids. Visitation will be held from 5 – 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at Kahler Funeral Home. The Christian Wake Service will begin at 7:00 p.m. followed by a family rosary. On-line condolences may be left at the Kahler Funeral Home website.

Alice was born on August 2, 1925 in rural Jasper, MN, the daughter of Mabel and Halvar Ellefson. She attended Trent High School and graduated in 1943. Alice married Odilo “Dee” Hansen on November 13, 1945. They made their home in rural Dell Rapids where they raised their six children.

Alice was an active member of St. Mary Catholic Church and St. Anthony Altar Society. She volunteered at Padre’s for ten years. She was a talented refurbisher of antique furniture and was known for her upholstery, creative craft projects and patchwork blankets. Alice loved sports, whether listening to it on the radio or watching whoever was playing, especially her family. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were always treated to her delicious cookies and cakes.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Dee, and her brother, Harvey Ellefson.

Those left to cherish her memory are her six children, Dennis (Kathleen), Barb (Jerry) Murphy, Greg, Karen (Scott) Crisp all of Dell Rapids; Paul (Peg) of Madison and Ann (Steve) Krier of Sioux Falls; her sister-in-law, Mabel Ellefson of Dell Rapids; her sixteen grandchildren and thirty-five great grandchildren and her many relatives and friends.

Mason Peter Signs with DWU

Another Dell Rapids graduate will be heading to Dakota Wesleyan University to play basketball for the Tigers.  Mason Peter has signed to play for the Tigers next season.

Peter finished his senior season with 8.7 points per game (183 points), 4.0 rebounds per game (85 rebounds), and 1.4 assists per game (30 assists).  Peter shot 50% from the field (65-129) and 62% (49-79) from the free-throw line.  For his Quarrier career, Peter finished 353 total points, 185 rebounds, 71 assists, and 41 steals.  He was a 52% shooter from the field in his career and shot 63% from the free-throw line.

Peter will join fellow Dell Rapids graduate Ty Hoglund next season.
