The Humboldt/Hartford Wood Ducks are still alive in the District 4B Tournament being held in Canova. They lost their opening round game to Flandreau Cardinals on Friday, July 26th, but kept their season going with a win over Madison on Sunday, July 28th.
Flandreau Cardinals 9, Wood Ducks 4
In the first round of the tournament, Flandreau overcame an early deficit to take the win. The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first. The Wood Ducks scored three times in the top of the second and added another in the third for a 4-1 lead. Flandreau would cut the lead to 4-3 with two runs in the bottom of the third. They took the lead for good, 5-4, with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Three runs came home for the Cardinals in the bottom of the sixth, and they added one more in the seventh.
A King had two hits, one a double, and two RBIs. Clint DenBoer added two singles. Camden McDonald had a single and an RBI. Braden Herr finished with a double. Brayden Odegaard, Keaton Vessells, and Gage Nelson all had one hit each.
Wood Ducks 4, Madison 3
In an elimination game, the Wood Ducks scored two runs late and then held Madison in the bottom of the ninth to get the win. Madison scored right away in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 lead. The Wood Ducks tied the game in the top of the third and then took a 2-1 lead with a run in the fourth. Madison would tie the game 2-2 with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Humboldt/Hartford went ahead 4-2 on a two-run single by Logan Larson. Madison got a two-out RBI double to cut the lead to 4-3, but the tying run was left on third base.
Larson finished with three hits and two RBIs. King had a triple. CJ DenBoer and McDonald both had a single. Herr added an RBI. Derek Renken pitched six innings and allowed an earned run on four hits and three walks with five strikeouts. Clint DenBoer pitched three innings and allowed an earned run on a hit and two walks with one strikeout.
