Trojan Girls Track Returns Strong Team

The West Central Trojan girls track team finished third at the state track meet last year, the 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams broke the state meet record, and the 4×200 relay team ran the fastest time in State A history.  This year’s track team returns three of the girls from those relay teams as well as the state champ and runner-up in the long jump and runner-up in the 100m dash returning this season.  The Trojans also return a state placer in the shot put.

“I am ready to hit the track running.  This is such an amazing group of young women, and everyone will play a key roll in our success this season. While track and field is not everyones favorite sport, we strive to build a group of ladies that encourage each other and push each other to get better every single day. At the end of the season, we hope that everyone is at their best – (both on and off the track) -and they are all competing or supporting their teammates at a state meet Memorial Day weekend!” said head coach Janel Merkwan.

West Central’s key returners are seniors Molli Thornton, Emma Goehring, Cambell Fischer, Tessa VanOverbeke, Brie Peters, Olivia Hofer, and Kaylee Kono.  Seniors Biz Johnson and Alexa Larson will miss the season with injuries, but Coach Merkwan says both will be huge supporters for their teammates and student coaches.  Sadie Berg, junior, also returns for the Trojans.  Coach Merkwan also mentioned that they have a host of underclassmen that are motivated and ready to post times and distances to compete with the best athletes out there.
