Late Rally Falls Short for Trojan Girls

The West Central Trojan girls basketball team put together a fourth-quarter rally, but ran out of time as Lakota Tech held for an 80-71 win at the Sacred Hoops Classic in Mitchell on Saturday, January 7th.

Lakota Tech opened the game with a 7-0 run.  West Central responded with a 9-0 run for a 9-7 lead midway through the first quarter.  Lakota Tech finished the quarter on a 20-2 run to lead 27-11 lead.  They continued to lead 46-31 at halftime.  The Trojans got the lead down to 10 early in the third quarter, but Lakota Tech pushed the lead to 60-41 by the end of the quarter.

West Central put together a rally in the fourth quarter.  They cut the lead to 10 points, 69-59, with 2:45 to play.  The Trojans continued to chip away and had the lead down to seven points, 67-74, with :45 left in the game.  Unfortunately the Trojans ran out of time to complete the comeback.

The Trojans shot 42% (22-53) from the field, 31% (9-29) from three-point area, and 58% (18-31) from the free-throw line.  Lakota Tech shot 47% (26-55) overall, 43% (6-14) from three-point area, and 71% (22-31) from the free-throw line.

Four players finished in double figures for West Central. Molli Thornton, named the game’s MVP for the Trojans, finished with 23 points and two assists.  Jazelle Jarding had 15 points, 12 rebounds, and two assists.  Tessa VanOverebeke had 12 points, four rebounds, and two steals.  Cambell Fischer added 11 points, three rebounds, two steals, and four assists.
