Tri-Valley Girls Win Overtime Battle with Comets

The Tri-Valley Mustangs rallied in overtime to win a back-and-forth battle with the Rapid City Christian Comets, 66-62, at the Dak-12/NEC Conference Clash in Madison on Saturday, February 8th.

The Mustangs held a slim 11-10 advantage at the end of the first quarter.  The Comets outscored the Mustangs 16-9 in the second quarter for a 26-20 lead at halftime.  Tri-Valley had the big quarter in the third quarter and outscored the Comets 23-15 to take a 43-41 lead into the fourth quarter.

With the game tied 53-53 in the final minute, the Mustangs had a go-ahead layup fall just short.  The Comets got the rebound and looked to try to hold for the final shot, but the Mustangs got a steal and the ball back.  The Mustangs had a chance to win the game from the free-throw line with :04 to play, but two missed free throws kept the game tied 53-53.

Rapid City Christian scored the first point of overtime to take a 54-53 lead.  The Mustangs then went on a 10-0 run to take a 63-56 lead with under a minute to go.  That run kept Tri-Valley in the lead the rest of the game for the win.

Mattie Huwe had 16 points and four rebounds.  Izzy Davey, who was named the game’s MVP, finished with 13 points.  Maddie Wenzel had five rebounds, and Hailey Sorenson had four rebounds in the game.
