Tri-Valley Girls Slip Past McCook Central/Montrose

A fourth quarter comeback helped the Tri-Valley Mustang girls to a 42-40 win over the McCook Central/Montrose Fighting Cougars in Salem on Monday, February 12th.

The Fighting Cougars started the game on a 6-1 run.  Tri-Valley fought back and tied the game 10-10, but McCook Central/Montrose led 12-10 at the end of the first quarter.  They were able to extend that lead to 20-15 at halftime.  The Mustangs went on a 10-5 run to start the third quarter to tie the game 25-25.  Tri-Valley ended the third quarter leading 30-27.  After a 32-32 tie early in the fourth quarter, Tri-Valley went on an 8-0 run for a 40-32 lead.  The Fighting Cougars pulled within three points, 40-37, but two free-throws by Lauren Grinde with just over ten seconds to play put the Mustangs ahead 42-37.  McCook Central/Montrose made a three-pointer with about eight seconds left, but Tri-Valley was able to run out the clock for the win.

The Mustangs shot 23% (13-56) from the field overall, 14% (4-29) on three-point attempts, and 73% (11-15) from the free-throw line.  McCook Central/Montrose finished the game shooting 42% (16-38) overall, 27% (4-15) from three-point area, and 67% (4-6) from the free-throw line.

Madelyn Wenzel finished with 10 points and four rebounds.  Mattie Huwe had seven points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals.  Elizabeth Davey also had seven points with four rebounds, two assists, and two steals.  Hailey Sorensen ended with seven points and three rebounds.  Grinde had six points and four rebounds.
