#2 Vermillion Survives Against Tri-Valley Girls

The Tri-Valley Mustang girls nearly upset the #2 Vermillion Tanagers in their first home game in the new gym on Friday, January 3rd.  Tri-Valley led through most of the game, but a fourth quarter run gave Vermillion a 49-46 win.

Vermillion led the entire first quarter, but not by more than four points.  The Tanagers led 12-10 at the end of the first quarter.  Tri-Valley had a great second quarter.  The Mustangs outscored Vermilion 17-9 and took a 27-21 lead into halftime.

The two teams struggled on offense in the the third quarter.  They combined for a total of 15 points.  Vermillion held the 9-6 scoring advantage, and Tri-Valley’s lead was just three points, 33-30, going into the fourth quarter.  The Tanagers then rallied to outscore Tri-Valley 19-13 in the final quarter to escape with a 49-46 win.

The Mustangs shot 36.6% (15-41) overall, 33.3% (8-24) from three-point area, and 61.5% (8-13) from the free-throw line.  Vermillion was 32% (16-50) shooting overall, 22.2% (4-18) from three-point area, and 56.5% (13-23) from the free-throw line.

Hailey Sorenson had 14 points, two rebounds, two assists, and two steals.  Mattie Huwe also had 14 points with three assists.  Rowyn Gacke had eiight points and two rebounds.  Danika Fluth added five points.  Madelyn Wenzel had two points, six rebounds, and four steals.
