West Central 16U Drops Doubleheader Against Volga

West Central 16U dropped both games of a doubleheader against Volga on Monday, June 6th.  VOlga took the first game 7-6 and then won the second game 16-4.

Game 1: Volga 7, West Central 6

Volga scored six of their seven runs in the final three innings to take the opening game 7-6.

West Central took the early lead with three runs in the top of the first. Keaton Vessells had a two-run single, and Cain Grocott had an RBI single.  Volga scored one in the bottom of the second to cut the lead to 3-1.  The score remained 3-1 until the top of the fifth.  Brodie Herr had an RBI single. Cade Vanderwoude had an RBI sacrifice fly, and Will Nester had an RBI single to give West Central a 6-1 lead.  Volga, however, scored four times without a hit in the bottom of the fifth.  They tied the game with a run in the bottom of the sixth, and then got the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh on a passed ball.

Herr had two hits, including a double, and an RBI.  Nester and Grocott also had two hits each with an RBI.  Vessells had one hit and two RBIs.  Jesse Jost finished with two singles.  Jonathan Murray also had a hit, and Vanderwoude had an RBI.

Vanderwoude pitched two innings and allowed an earned run on two his with a walk and three strikeouts.  Grocott pitched 1 2/3 innings allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits and three walks with a strikeout.   Landen Holewa pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up four runs on six walks and two strikeouts.  Herr pitched 1/3 of an inning getting a strikeout.

Game 2:  Volga 16, West Central 4

Volga scored in every inning but the fifth, which included a seven-run fourth inning.  West Central got single runs in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings for their four runs.

Jost had three hits and an RBI.  Vessells finished with two hits.  Vanderwoude had a double.  Carter Evans had a single and an RBI.  Rayce Whiting, Nester, and Grocott each had a single.  Herr finished with an RBI.  Nester pitched two innings and allowed four earned runs on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts.  Vessells threw one inning and allowed five earned runs on six walks and three strikeouts.  Jost also pitched an inning giving up seven earned runs on three hits and seven walks with one strikeout.   Herr pitched one inning recording two walks and three strikeouts.

Trojan Girls Golf 6th at State A Golf Tournament

The West Central Trojan girls golf team placed sixth at the 2022 South Dakota State A Golf Tournament at Bakker Crossing on Monday, June 6th and Tuesday, June 7th.  The Trojans finished with a team score of 780.

Two players placed in the top 20.  Both Dakotah Larson (90, 93) and Lyric Riepma (83, 100) finished tied for 20th with scores of 183.  Kaylee Olson finished with a 199 (101, 98).  Blaire Eberhard had a two-day score of 215 (115, 100).

Gamecocks Win Big over Flandreau

The Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks took over first place in the Cornbelt League after a 16-1 win over Flandreau on Sunday, June 5th.  The Gamecocks had an 11-run third inning in the five-inning game that ended on the 15-run rule.

Flandreau did score the first run of the game in the top of the first inning on two singles and a double.  Those were the only three hits the Cardinals got in the game.  The Gamecocks took the lead in the bottom of the first with RBIs by Broc Haldeman and Kyle Bailey.  Humboldt/Hartford had only four hits in their 11-run third inning, capped by a grand slam by Bailey.  The Gamecocks added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game.

Bailey had two hits, including the grand slam, and five RBIs.  Haldeman had two hits, including a double, and four RBIs.  Devon Garry also had two hits, including a double.  Noah Vettrus and Adam Hentges both had a single and two RBIs.  Joe Hanisch and Cam Quigley both had a hit and an RBI.

Zach Treiber pitched all five innings allowing one earned run on three hits and two walks with six strikeouts.

Flandreau Gets Walk-off Win After Wood Duck Comeback

The Humboldt/Hartford Wood Ducks scored three runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game 3-3, but the Flandreau Cardinals got a game-winning hit with two-outs in the bottom of the ninth for a 4-3 Cornbelt League win on Thursday, June 2nd.

Flandreau scored in the bottom of the first inning on a two-out hit for an early 1-0 lead.  The game remained 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning.  The Cardinals scored two more runs after a hit batter and three straight singles for a 3-0 lead.

The Wood Ducks put together a two-out rally in the top of the seventh.  Tyler Lundborg hit a single to left field.  Logan Colwill reached on an error.  Nathan Adrian had an RBI single, and Grafton Stroup followed with a two-run double to tie the game 3-3.  The score remained tied until the bottom of the ninth.  Flandreau put some pressure on the Wood Ducks when two batters reached with one out.  Preston Riddle got a strikeout for the second out, but two straight singles ended the game.

Stroup had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs.  Adrian had a single and an RBI.  Ryan Healty finished with two hits.  Bennett Sebert and Lundborg each had a single.  Riddle pitched 8 2/3 innings allowing four runs, three earned, on 11 hits and a walk while getting 16 strikeouts.

Gamecocks Score Three Late Runs to Tie Game, Then Walks-off Salem

The Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks scored one run in the eighth and two more in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game 11-11 against the Salem Cubs and send the game into extra innings.  The Gamecocks then got a run in the bottom of the eleventh for the walk-off win on Thursday, June 2nd.  Both teams battled back-and-forth all game long.

Salem scored three runs in the top of the first only to see the Gamecocks scored three in the bottom of the inning on a wild pitch and two-run single by Brandon McKnight.  The Cubs took the lead again in the top of the second inning.  Humboldt/Hartford tied the game in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Kyle Bailey.

Both teams traded runs in the fourth inning.  Salem took a 6-5 lead after scoring another run in the top of the fifth.  The Gamecocks took their first lead of the game with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.  Cam Quigley tied the game with a lead-off solo home run.  Broc Haldeman had an RBI single, and McKnight had an RBI ground out to give the Gamecocks an 8-6 lead.

The Cubs regained the lead in the top of the sixth with three more runs.  They extended their lead to 11-8 with two runs in the top of the seventh.  Noah Vettrus drove home a run in the bottom of the eighth inning.  Chad Morrison had an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth, and Bailey brought home the tying run with a single.  The game remained tied until the bottom of the eleventh.

Landry Knight got on base with a one-out single.  Quigley drew a walk, and then Morrison was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out.  Knight then scored on a wild pitch to give the Gamecocks the win.

Quigley had three hits, including a double and home run, with an RBI.  Bailey had three hits and two RBIs.  Morrison had two hits, one a double, and an RBI.  Haldeman and Cooper Maras both had two hits and an RBI.  McKnight had one hit and three RBIs.  Vettrus had a hit and an RBI.  Seth Cavanaugh, Adam Hentges, and Knight each had a hit.

Devon Garry pitched four innings allowing five runs, one earned, on three hits and six walks with six strikeouts.  Micah Warrington pitched two innings and allowed four runs, three earned, on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts.  Knight earned the win pitching five innings allowing two earned runs on two hits and two walks while striking out 12 batters.

West Central 14U 2022 Season Starts

The 14U baseball season for West Central has kicked off for the 2022 summer.  West Central has two teams playing in the I-29 League this year, West Central-Blue and West Central-Gold.

West Central-Blue is currently at the top of the standings after four games with a 4-0 record.  They have defeated Tea-D 11-0 (May 24th), Sioux Falls Christian 13-3 (May 26th), Hamlin 12-1 (May 31st), and Tea-P 22-1 (June 1st).  West Central-Blue will play Baltic on Tuesday, June 7th.

West Central-Gold is still in search of their first win of the season.  They fell to Dell Rapids-Navy 6-7 (May 24th), Madison Maroon 0-15 (May 26th), Flandreau 9-22 (May 31st), and Elkton 8-10 (June 1st).  They will host Tri-Valley White on Tuesday, June 7th.

West Central Baseball Season Ends at State Tournament

The West Central Trojan high school baseball team had their season come to an end in the opening round of the 2022 South Dakota State B Tournament on Tuesday, May 31st.  After having their opening round game against Dakota Valley postponed a day, the Trojans fell by a final score of 6-5.

West Central had the lead two times in the game.  The first lead came in the top of the third.  Grafton Stroup broke a scoreless tie with an RBI double.  The Panthers responded with two runs in the bottom of the third for a 2-1 lead.

The Trojans took the lead again in the top of the fifth inning.  Deuce Sherrard tied the game with an RBI single.  Stroup drove home another run with a fielder’s choice RBI ground ball.  Zach Madsen also had RBI fielder’s choice ground ball to give West Central a 4-2 lead.  Dakota Valley responded again, this time with four runs to regain the lead, 6-4.

West Central put together a rally in the top of the seventh.  Sherrard started the inning with a double.  Stroup reached on an error, which also scored Sherrard.  The next three batters, however, popped out leaving the tying run at second base.

Stroup had two hits, one a double, and two RBIs.  Sherrard also had two hits, including a double, with one RBI.  Madsen finished with an RBI as well.  Stroup pitched all six innings allowing six runs, but only two earned, on six hits and a walk with seven strikeouts.

West Central finished the season with a 12-3 record.

Four West Central Girls Golfers Headed to State

Four golfers for the West Central Trojans will be headed to the girls 2022 South Dakota State A Tournament after their Region 2A performance on Tuesday, May 31st.  The Trojans as a team just missed qualifying everyone by two shots.  West Central finished fourth with a team score of 392.  Sioux Falls Christian (352), Vermillion (366), and Canton (390) were the top three teams.

Kaylee Olson, Lyric Riepma, Dakotah Larson, and Blaire Eberhard all made the cut to qualify for the state tournament.  Olson finished 16th with a round of 97.  Riepma was 18th also with a round of 97.  Larson placed 19th at 98.  Eberhard finished 22nd with a round of 100.  Morgan Driscoll finished with a 106.

The State A Tournament will be held at Bakker Crossing in Sioux Falls on Monday, June 6th and Tuesday, June 7th.

Gamecocks Take Win over Wood Ducks

In the first of two battles between the Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks and Wood Ducks, the Gamecocks took the win, 12-4, on Thursday, May 26th.

The Gamecocks scored 12 unanswered runs in the first four innings.  They got five runs in the first, two in the second, three in the third, and two in the fourth for a 12-0 lead.  The Wood Ducks got all four of their runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Noah Vettrus had three hits, including a double, and three RBIs for the Gamecocks.  Kyle Bailey had three hits and two RBIs.  Devon Garry had three hits, including a triple, and an RBI.  Brandon McKnight had two hits and an RBI.  Clayton Hanisch had a double.  Cam Quigley, Joe Hanisch, and Cooper Maras all had singles.  Broc. Haldeman had two RBIs.  Cole Barthel pitched the first four innings without giving up a hit and striking out two.  Micah Warrington pitched five innings allowing two earned runs on three hits with three walks and eight strikeouts.

Austin King had a double and two RBIs for the Wood Ducks.  JJ Jesson had a single and two RBIs.  Logan Larsen had a single.  Eric Heidebrink pitched two innings and allowed seven earned runs on nine hits and three walks with a strikeout.  Logan Colwill pitched an inning allowing four runs, two earned, on four walks.  Jake Ellens pitched six innings allowing an earned run on six hits with a walk and five strikeouts.

West Central Trojans Set Two Records at State Track Meet

Two West Central girls relay teams set meet records at the State A Track Meet in Sioux Falls held Thursday, May 26th through Saturday, May 28th.  The girls team finished third overall with 64 points, while the boys teams finished seventh with 33 points.

The 4x100m relay team of Lily Sidel, Sadie Berg, Molli Thornton, and Emma Goehring set the meet record in the preliminaries with a time of :49.04.  The relay team placed first in the finals.  The 4x200m relay team of Goehring, Berg, Sidel, and Thornton set the meet record with a time of 1:42.91 while placing first in the finals.  Goehring placed second in the 100m dash, and Sidel finished sixth.  Thornton won the long jump and placed fourth in the triple jump.  Berg placed sixth in the 200m dash.  Goehring was second and Sidel fifth in the long jump.  Cambell Fischer finished sixth in the shot put.

The 4x100m relay team of Justin Zirpel, Tommy Berg, Carter Schmeichel, and Mason Berens finished second.  The 4x200m relay team of Schmeichel, Berens, Wyatt Nielsen, and Layton Johnson also finished second.  The 4x400m relay team of Nielsen, Schmeichel, Jude Jarding, and Johnson was also second.  Johnson finished fifth in both the 100m dash and 200m dash.  Gunnar Cuka was eighth in the long jump.
