Mustangs Beat Trojans for Second Time this Season

Playing against each other for the second time in less than 10 days, the Tri-Valley Mustang and the West Central Trojan volleyball teams clashed on Monday, October 26th at Tri-Valley High School.

The Mustangs took the match in straight sets again, this time by scores of 25-18, 27-25, and 25-15.

Tri-Valley got things rolling early as they jumped out to a 7-3 lead.  The lead quickly grew to eight at 13-5.  The Trojans battled to within two points at 17-15.  The Mustangs responded to push the lead back to five points at 22-17 and eventually winning the set 25-18.

The Mustangs again got to an early lead in the second set.  Tri-Valley led 11-5.  West Central then went on a 12-1 run to take a 17-12 lead.  Tri-Valley pulled within a point a couple of times, but West Central was able to keep the lead and held a 23-20 advantage.  The Trojans were at set point at 24-22, but Tri-Valley tied the score at 24-24.  West Central got the next point for a 25-24 lead to force set point again.  Tri-Valley then scored the next three points to get the come-from-behind 27-25 win.

The momentum of that win propelled Tri-Valley to another early lead at 10-5.  West Central scored four in a row to pull within a point at 10-9.  The Trojans tied the set at 11-11.  The Mustangs then scored the next five points for a 16-11 lead.  Tri-Valley then closed out the set on a 9-4 run for the 25-15 win.

The Trojans were led by Brooke Opitz with 23 set assists, 10 digs, three blocks, and two ace serves.  Cassidy Siemonsma had nine kills and five blocks.  Jenna Lueth finished with 14 digs.  Grace Harden had five kills.

Blayne Gacke had 13 digs, six kills, and five ace serves for the Mustangs.  Kaitlyn Mohnen had 13 digs, eight kills and six blocks.  Hannah West also finished with 13 digs.  Tabor Teel had nine blocks.  Grace Schildhauer had a team-high 18 set assists, and Brookelyn Stieben had eight set assists.

This was the final regular season match for the Mustangs.  Tri-Valley finishes their regular season with a record of 9-10.  West Central will finish their regular season at home on Tuesday, October 27th against Parker.

The two teams look to be headed for another match against one another in the opening round of the Region 3A tournament.

Trojan and Mustang Cross Country Teams End Season at State Meet

The conditions for 2020 South Dakota Class A Cross Country meet were anything but ideal.  The runners had to battle bitter cold temperatures and snow in Rapid City on Saturday, October 24th.

The West Central Trojan cross country team had four members that ran in the state meet, while the Tri-Valley Mustang team had two running in the event.

For Tri-Valley, Nate Hargreaves placed 21st with a time of 18:01.46.  Brie Peters had a 48th place finish with a time of 21:32.41.

Abbie Cain and Regan Stallman finished back-to-back for the Trojans in the girls race.  Cain was 82nd in a time of 22:37.39, and Stallman placed 83rd with a time of 22:43.91.  Justin Schumacher and Ben Strunk also finished back-to-back in the boys reace.  Schumacher was 73rd in 19:17.79, and Strunk was 74th with a time of 19:19.14.

Canton Ends West Central Winning Streak in Final Regular Season Game

The West Central Trojan football team had their three-game winning streak come to an end in the final regular season game on Thursday, October 22nd.  The Trojans lost on the road to the Canton C-Hawks 12-7.

Canton scored on their opening possession of the game that lasted four and a half minutes.  Seth Peterson threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Payton Eben with 7:38 to play in the opening quarter.  The extra point was no good, and Canton led 6-0.

The Trojans took a small lead in the second quarter.  Justin Zirpel scored on a four-yard touchdown run.  The extra point was good, and West Central led 7-6.  The score remained 7-6 at halftime.  Neither team would score in the third quarter as well, and the Trojans maintained a 7-6 lead heading into the final quarter.

The Trojans looked as if they were going to put the game out of reach as they had the ball inside the Canton 10-yard line late in the fourth quarter.  Canton’s defense was able to make a goal-line stand and forced a turnover on downs on their own one-yard line with about two minutes to go in the game.  The C-Hawks were able to convert on a fourth down on the ensuing offensive drive to keep hopes alive.  With :19 to go in the game, Peterson and Eben connected again on a touchdown pass to get the come-from-behind win.

Zirpel was 2-2 passing for 53 yards.  Derek Eidsness had both of those catches.  Zirpel also had 20 carries for 91 yards and a touchdown.  Ryan Healy had 21 carries for 81 yards.  Eidsness also had nine carries for 53 yards.

West Central finishes the regular season with a 5-4 record.  The Trojans will be the #3 seed in the 11A playoffs and will host the #6 Dell Rapids Quarriers on Thursday, October 29th.

West Central Volleyball Drops Home Match to Garretson

The West Central Trojan volleyball team hosted Region 3A foe, the Garretson Blue Dragons, on Tuesday, October 20th.  The Trojans were looking for a big Region 3A victory, but the Blue Dragons took the match in four sets.

Garretson won by scores of 25-19, 25-22, 17-25, and 25-15.

Grace Harden led the team with 11 kills in the match.  Cassidy Siemonsma had four ace serves and two blocks.  Jenna Lueth finished with a team-high 14 digs.  Brooke Opitz ended the night with 32 set assists.

West Central (6-12) will look to get back into the win column when they play the Tri-Valley Mustangs at Tri-Valley High School on Monday, October 26th.  The Trojans will end the regular season with a home match against Parker on Tuesday, October 27th.

West Central Girls Soccer – Champs Again!

The 2020 West Central Trojan girls soccer team captured the 2020 South Dakota Class A state title with a 2-0 win over the Tea Area Titans on Saturday, October 17th at Tiger Stadium in Huron.

Neither team was able to get many shots on goal in the first half, and the score remained 0-0 at halftime.  West Central was able to break the tie in the 18th minute on a goal made by Rylee Haldeman.  The Trojan defense held strong against the Titans, and with under ten minutes to play, Keighlor Nolz scored another goal for West Central to secure the victory.

This is the fourth championship for West Central in the last five years, and also the third championship game win for the Trojans over the Titans.  The Trojans and Titans have met in the championship match the last three years and four of the last five years.

Mustangs Win Dak-12 Clash over West Central

The Tri-Valley Mustangs earned a straight-set match win over the West Central Trojans at the Dak-12 Conference tournament on Saturday, October 17th.  The conference tournament format changed with a few teams unable to play.  Instead of a bracketed tournament, there were just four single matches scheduled.

The first set of the match featured a couple of runs by each team.  With the score tied 3-3 early, the Mustangs went on a 4-0 run to take a 7-3 lead.  Tri-Valley led 10-6 before the Trojans went on a 4-0 run to tie the set at 10-10.  Tri-Valley then went on another 4-0 for a 14-10 advantage.  The Mustangs were then able to maintain a four-point lead before extending it to 22-16.  West Central pulled within two points at 23-21, but the Mustangs ended the rally and took the set 25-21.

Tri-Valley got out to a quick start in the second set.  The Mustangs went on a 6-1 run to turn a 2-2 tie into an 8-3 lead.  The lead grew to eight points at 15-7, and Tri-Valley kept a five-to-seven point lead the remainder of the set and won the second set 25-17.

The Mustangs, again, used a run get an early lead.  West Central scored the first point of the third set, but Tri-Valley scored the next six points for a 6-1 lead.  The advantage grew to eight points at 14-6.  The lead stayed at eight points at 20-12 before West Central started to rally.   The Trojans scored six straight points to pull within two points at 20-18.   West Central got the lead down to one at 21-20, but that was as close as they could get.  Tri-Valley ended the set on a 4-1 run to win 25-21 and take the match in straight sets.

Tri-Valley (8-8) will host Mt Vernon/Plankinton on Tuesday, October 20th.  West Central (6-11) will host Garretson also on Tuesday, October 20th.

Trojans Shut Out Dell Rapids

The West Central Trojans football team had every aspect of their game working in a 34-0 victory over the Dell Rapids Quarriers on the Quarrier’s Homecoming night on Friday, October 16th.

The Trojans finished with a total of 391 yards of offense, all of those coming on the ground, while holding Dell Rapids to just 145 yards of total offense.  The West Central defense also force two turnovers in the game.

Derek Eidsness got the scoring started on the Trojan’s opening drive of the game.  Eidsness scored on a 41-yard carry with 9:24 to play in the opening quarter.  Justin Zirpel also had a first quarter touchdown, scoring from 37 yards away with 4:10 to go.  West Central led 14-0 after the first quarter.

Ryan Healy scored on a six-yard touchdown run with 7:23 to play in the first half to push the lead to 21-0.  After a fumble recovery by the defense, Eidsness hit a 32-yard field goal with :11 in the first half to give West Central a 24-0 lead at halftime.

Eidsness made another field goal in the third quarter with 2:30 to go, this time from 38 yards away to make the score 27-0.  The final touchdown came with 8:37 to go in the game on a 39-yard run by Zirpel.

West Central nearly had three players with 100 yards or more on the ground in the game.  Zirpel finished with 11 carries for 140 yards and two touchdowns.  Eidsness had six carries for 110 yards and a touchdown.  Healy finished with 21 carries for 97 yards and a touchdown.  Seth Gabbert had seven tackles in the game.  Eric Bowden had six tackles, and Jacob Krempges had four tackles.

West Central (5-3) will travel to Canton to end the regular season on Friday, October 22nd.

Trojans Fall in Five Sets to Titans

The West Central Trojan volleyball team lost a close five-set battle to the Mt Vernon/Plankinton Titans on Thursday, October 15th in Mt Vernon.

The first set was played close most of the way.  Mt Vernon/Plankinton took a late lead and won the first set 25-22.  West Central was able to come back and take set two by a  score of 25-17.  After trailing 23-20, the Titans put the pressure on the Trojans by winning the third set 26-24 for a 2-1 lead.  West Central battled back in the fourth set winning 25-21 to force a fifth and final set of the night.  The fifth set was another close contest.  The set was tied 9-9 midway through.  The Titans scored three in a row for a 12-9 lead, but the Trojans went on a run of their own scoring the next four points for a 13-12 lead.  Mt Vernon/Plankinton tied it at 13-13.  The set was tied again at 14-14, 15-15, and 16-16.  The Titans got the point after a 17-16 advantage for the 18-16 set victory and match win.

Cassidy Siemonsma had 14 kills, three blocks, and three ace serves for the Trojans.  Rachel Bucher added 13 kills.  Taylor Kunzweiler had three ace serves.  Brooke Opitz finished with 39 set assists, and Jenna Lueth had a team-high 24 digs.

West Central (6-10) will play Tri-Valley at the Dak-12 Conference Clash on Saturday, October 17th at Sioux Falls Christian High School.

West Central Girls and Boys Cross Country Teams Both Finish 5th at Region 2A

The West Central Trojan cross country girls and boys team both finished fifth at the Region 2A meet on Thursday, October 15th held at Yankton Trail Park in Sioux Falls.

The girls team finished with 79 points.  Sioux Falls Cristian won the girls region title with 14 points.  Flandreau was second with 32 points, and Garretson placed third with 66 points.  The top three teams qualified for state.

Two runners for the girls team qualified for state by finishing in the top 20 individually.  Abbie Cain placed 13th with a time of 21:38.06.  Reagan Stallman finished 20th with a time of 21:58.92.  Drew Caffrey placed 23rd with a time of 22:35.22.  Kaylyn Kunz was 27th with a time of 22:55.30.  Sayda Rolfson placed 30th in a time of 23:11.20  Paige Pilker was 31st with a time of 23:17.25.

The boys team finished with 87 points.  Sioux Falls Christian placed first with 10 points.  Madison was second with 68 points, and Baltic placed third with 69 points.

Two runners for the boys team also qualified for the state meet.  Justin Schumacher was 18th with a time of 18:27.34.  Ben Strunk was 19th with a time of 18:32.13.  Jonathon Roth was 25th in a time of 19:11.69.  Jacob Peterson was 29th in a time of 19:38.48.  Blake Stark placed 38th with a time of 20:50.28.  Maison Schuldt was 43rd in 21:07.70.

Cain, Stallman, Schumacher, and Strunk will race in the 2020 Class A South Dakota Cross Country State Meet on Saturday, October 24th at Hart Ranch Camping Resort in Rapid City.

West Central Falls to Strong Chester Team

The West Central Trojan volleyball team hosted a strong Chester Flyer team on Tuesday, October 13th.  The Flyers came to Hartford with a 15-2 record and added another win after beating the Trojans in straight sets.

Chester won the first set late.  The two teams battled back and forth, but the Flyers got the 25-23 victory.  That late momentum from the first set carried over into the next two sets.  The Flyers won the next two sets by scores of 25-12 and 25-12.

Casssidy Siemonsma had eight kills and five blocks in the match.  Jenna Lueth finished with 14 digs and two ace serves.  Taylor Kunzweiler also had two ace serves.  Brooke Opitz finished with 19 set assists.

West Central (6-9) will travel to play the Mt Vernon/Plankinton Titans on Thursday, October 15th.
