Last Second Shot Sinks Trojans at Sacred Hoops Classic

In one of the most anticipated games of the 2nd Annual Sacred Hoops Classic in Mitchell on Saturday, January 2nd, the undefeated West Central Trojan girls played the undefeated White River Tigers.  The game matched all of the hype leading to the game.

Neither team was able to get a sizeable advantage during the game, and it all game down to a shot at the buzzer.  Unfortunately for the Trojans, the winning basket came at the hands of Caelyn Valandra-Prue as the Tigers won the game 62-60.

Each team held a lead at the different quarter breaks.  West Central had the first quarter break leading 17-15 at the end of the first quarter.  White River was able to grab a four-point lead at halftime of 37-33.

The Trojans took the lead again in the third quarter, and pushed the lead to 47-42 with just over two minutes to play in the third quarter.  White River ended the quarter on a 4-0 run, and the Trojans led 47-46 heading into the final quarter.  Both teams traded leads in the fourth quarter.

Addy Kramer made her seventh three-point basket with 1:41 to go in the game to give West Central a 60-58 lead.  The Tigers tied the game at the free-throw line with 1:06 to play.  Both teams had an opportunity to take the lead in the final minute, but it was the shot of Valandra-Prue as the buzzer sounded that won the game for the Tigers.

West Central finished the game shooting 41% (23-56) from the field, 42% (11-26) from three-point area, and just 3-10 from the foul line.  The free-throw line is where White River held a huge advantage.  The Tigers finished the game 22-27 for 81%.

Kramer, who was named the game’s MVP for West Central, finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds.  Rylee Haldeman had 14 points and nine assists.  Cassidy Siemonsma had 13 points and six rebounds.

West Central Boys Win Third Straight

The West Central Trojan boys basketball team won their third straight game on Saturday, January 2nd at the Sacred Hoops Classic in Mitchell.  The Trojans got a 52-41 victory over the Custer Wildcats.

The Trojans never trailed in the game.  They worked to a five-point lead by the end of the first quarter, 13-8.  The Trojans were able to push the lead to seven by halftime at 23-16.  West Central took control of the game in the third quarter.  They pushed the lead to 19 points at 41-22 with :45 to go in the quarter.  Custer made a little run in the fourth quarter, but the Trojans were able to hold off the Wildcat comeback.

West Central finished the game at 38% (20-52) from the field, 32% (7-22) from three-point area, and 56% (5-9) from the free-throw line.  The Trojans also out rebounded Custer 32-24 in the game.

The Trojans had a balanced scoring attack.  Carter Schmeichel had 10 points and four rebounds.  Hunter Hagerty, who was named the game’s MVP for the Trojans, finished with nine points and three rebounds.   Kasan Abedi had seven points, Derrick Eich finished with six points, and Jacob Krempges and Derek Eidsness both had five points each.  Jaxon Skinner had a team-high six rebounds.  Krempges had four assists.

West Central (3-2) will host Dakota Valley on Tuesday, January 12th.

Trojan Wrestling Splits Two at O’Gorman

The West Central Trojan wrestling team participated in their final two duals before Christmas on Monday, December 21st.  The Trojans faced Rapid City Central and Sioux Falls O’Gorman.

Rapid City Central defeated West Central 47-25.  West Central earned a 45-33 victory of Sioux Falls O’Gorman.

The Trojans, now 6-5 in duals, will be on a break until Tuesday, January 5th.  West Central will have three duals at Tri-Valley High School.  They will face Lennox, Tea Area, and Tri-Valley.

West Central Gymnastics Competes in Two Meets in Four Days

The West Central Trojan gymnastics team had two meets in four days before a break during Christmas.  The Trojans took part in a meet in Milbank on Saturday, December 19th.  They followed that with a dual against Deuel on Tuesday, December 22nd.

The Trojans finished third with 113.200 points in Milbank.  Milbank was first with 129.350 points, and Britton-Hecla was second with 116.850 points.

Averi Schmeichel was the All-Around winner with a score of 34.900. Jenna Schoeneman had a score of 25.000, and Olivia Hover had a score of 14.500.

The Deuel Cardinals defeated the Trojans in the dual held in Clear Lake on Tuesday, December 22nd.  The Cardinals won by a score of 132.350 – 115.450.

Schmeichel finished second in All-Around with a score of 34.600.  Maya VanHyfte had a score of 28.900.  Jami Bergeson had 26.000, and Olivia Hofer and Jenna Schoeneman both had 25.000.

The Trojans will compete in Estelline on Tuesday, January 5th.

West Central Girls Score Another Home Win

Playing in their third home game out of their first four of the season, the West Central Trojan girls beat another AA team on Tuesday, December 22nd.  The Trojans had no trouble with the Watertown Arrows in a 53-30 victory.

The West Central defense caused problems for Watertown all night long.  The Trojans forced 26 Arrow turnovers, with 15 of those turnovers coming on steals.  West Central also held Watertown to just 24% shooting from the field and 0-13 from three-point area.

The Trojans had the lead from the start of the game getting out to a 14-7 lead by the end of the first quarter.  The lead grew to 12 points by halftime at 24-12.  Watertown pulled within six points at 26-20 with 3:30 to play in the third quarter, but that was as close as they would get.  West Central closed out the third quarter on a 7-0 run to lead 33-20.  The Trojans then outscored Watertown 20-10 in the final quarter for the win.

West Central finished the game shooting 32% (18-56) from the field, 30% (6-20) from three-point area, and 58% (11-19) from the free-throw line.  Two players finished in double figures.  Rylee Haldeman had 12 points, seven steals, four rebounds, and three assists.  Molli Thornton also had 12 points with two rebounds.  Addy Kramer finished with eight points and nine rebounds.  Cassidy Siemonsma added eight points and six rebounds, while Josslin Jarding ended with seven points and seven rebounds.

West Central (4-0) will play White River at 6:00 p.m. in the Sacred Hoops Classic in Mitchell on Saturday, January 2nd.

Trojan Boys Win Big Against Winner

The West Central Trojan boys basketball team won their second game in a row when the defeated the Winner Warriors at home on Friday, December 18th.   West Central increased their lead at the end of every quarter.

It was a close game in the first quarter.  The Trojans led by just a point, 15-14, at the end of the quarter.  They were able to push the lead to nine points by halftime at 31-22.  West Central was able to increase the lead by two points by the end of the third quarter and led 50-39 heading into the final quarter of play.  West Central put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter by outscoring Winner 19-8 for the win.

Zane Crawford had a game-high 29 points.  Jacob Krempges had eight points and six assists.  Jaxon Skinner tallied eight points, eight rebounds, and three assists.  Derek Eidsness finished with seven rebounds and three assists.

The Trojans (2-2) will take a break for a little over a week.  West Central will play Hamlin in Watertown on Tuesday, December 29th.

West Central Girls Beat #1 Winner, End Winning Streak

The last time the West Central Trojan and Winner Warrior girls basketball team met was in the South Dakota Class A state championship game in 2019.  Both teams were undefeated going into the game, and it was Winner that was took home the championship and perfect season after a 60-53 victory.  The Warriors had not lost a game since then.  They finished last year’s season undefeated (no championship games played) and had won their first two games of this season.

The Trojans and Warriors met again in Hartford on Friday, December 18th, for a battle of top five teams.  West Central came into the game ranked fifth in the latest media poll, and Winner entered the game as the number one ranked team.

West Central led at the end of every quarter break and snapped the long winning streak of the Winner Warriors with a 53-43 victory.

The Trojans found themselves leading by four points at the end of the first quarter at 12-8.  They were able to grow the lead to seven points by halftime at 25-18.  Winner kept within striking distance in the third quarter as the Trojans led 36-30 heading into the fourth.  West Central outscored Winner 17-13 in the final quarter to secure the win.

Cassidy Siemonsma finished with a team-high 18 points for West Central.  Josslin Jarding added 13 points.  Addy Kramer had 12 points along with seven rebounds.

West Central (3-0) will host Watertown on Tuesday, December 22nd.

Trojans Take Two in Mt Vernon

The West Central Trojan girls and boys basketball teams played a double-header at Mt Vernon against the Mt Vernon/Plankinton Titans on Tuesday, December 15th.  The girls team beat the Titans 57-45, while the boys team was also victorious, 69-55.

The West Central girls got out to a quick start in the first quarter building a 17-9 lead at the quarter break.  That lead would carry throughout the entire game for the Trojans.  Mt Vernon/Plankinton cut the lead down to 31-22 at halftime, and then down to 46-39 by the end of the third quarter, but every time the Titans made a run, the Trojans had an answer.  West Central was able to add to the lead in the fourth quarter for the win.

The Trojans finished the game shooting 42% (21-50) from the field, 32%  (8-25) from three-point area, and 58% (7-12) from the free-throw line.  West Central also forced 17 Titan turnovers on 13 steals.

Two players finished in double figures.  Addy Kramer had 22 points along with nine rebounds.  Cassidy Siemonsma added 14 points and seven rebounds.  Josslin Jarding finished with five points, five rebounds, and three assists.  Rylee Haldeman had the hot defensive had with four steals.

The West Central boys were able to battle through a rough first half.  After starting the game on a 5-0 run, the Trojans were called for 10 team fouls by the 2:49 mark of the first quarter.  Mt Vernon/Plankinton took advantage of the situation and outscored West Central 15-4 after the early run for a 15-9 first quarter lead.  The Trojans were able to avoid major foul trouble in the second quarter and battled back to tie the game 25-25 by halftime.

With the team fouls reset at halftime, the Trojan defense was able to be more aggressive in the second half, and they completely shut down the the Titan offense in the third quarter.  West Central outscored the Titans 24-9 for a 49-34 lead heading into the final quarter.  The Titans were able to pull within six points at 61-55 with 1:45 left in the game, but West Central ended the contest on an 8-0 run to secure the win.

West Central was 50% (29-58) from the field, 17% (2-12) from three-point area, and 45% (9-20) from the free-throw line.  The defensive pressure forced 21 Titan turnovers on 16 steals.

Three players finished in double figures.  Zane Crawford had 20 points.  Kasan Abedi finished with 16 points, seven assists, six rebounds, and four steals.  Jaxon Skinner added 10 points and eight rebounds.  Derek Eidsness had nine points, five steals, four rebounds, and three assists.

The West Central girls (2-0) and boys (1-2) will host Winner on Friday, December 18th in a double-header.

Trojans and Mustangs Battle on Wrestling Mat

The West Central Trojans hosted the Tri-Valley Mustangs in a wrestling dual on Tuesday, December 15th.

The Trojans took the win 45-27.  The win improves the West Central record to 5-4 in duals.  Tri-Valley falls to 2-2 in duals.

Tri-Valley will wrestling in Elk Point on Saturday, December 19th.  West Central will wrestling Rapid City Central in a dual at O’Gorman High School on Monday, December 21st.

Trojan Gymnastics Team Places Fifth in Wagner

The West Central Trojan gymnastics team traveled to Wagner on Saturday, December 12th.  The team placed fifth with a team score of 116.15.  Chamberlain won the team title with a score of 125.8.  Vermillion was second with a score of 121.65.  Parkston-Ethan-Hanson-Mt Vernon placed third with a score of 118.1, and Wagner-Bon Homme was fourth with a score of 116.7.

Averi Schmeichel took home all-around honors once again.  Schmeichel finished with a total of 35.05.  She had the top mark in floor exercise at 9.5 and also the vault at 9.05.  She finished second in on the beam with a 9.05.

West Central will travel to Milbank for their next meet on Saturday, December 19th.
