West Central 16U Scores Big Win over Tea

The West Central 16U (5-2) team scored in every inning in a 13-0 win over Tea on Monday, June 21st in Tea.  West Central held Tea to just three total hits in the game while collecting 11 of their own.

West Central scored three in the first, two in the second, five in the third, one in the fourth, and two more in the fifth before the game ended on the 10-run rule.

Andrew Zimmer had four hits, with one double and one triple, and three RBIs.  Duece Sherard had a hit and three RBIs.  Xzavian Ferris had a double with two RBIs.  Camden McDonald and Jon Murray both had a hit and an RBI.  Dylan Stromer, Derek Renken, and Cade Vander Woude all had a single in the game.

Renken pitched two innings allowing one hit with three strikeouts.  Sherard pitched three innings allowing two hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

Gamecocks Beat Madison, Fall to Mudcats

The Hartford-Humboldt Gamecocks have split their last two Cornbelt League games.  The Gamecocks earned a 3-2 victory over the Madison Broncos on Thursday, June 17th, but fell to the Dell Rapids Mudcats 17-6 on Sunday, June 20th.

The Gamecocks scored the first run in the top of the second inning after an RBI single by Adam Hentges.  The scored remained 1-0 until the bottom of the seventh.  Madison scored two times to take a 2-1 lead.  The Gamecocks tied the game on a RBI ground out by Noah Vettrus and then took the lead on an RBI single by Cam Quigley.  The Broncos threatened to tie the game, or win it, in the bottom of the ninth.  They got their first two batters on with singles, but the tying run was left at second base.

Hentges, Quigley, and Vettrus all had a single and RBI in the game.  Joe Hanisch had a double.  Broc Haldeman, Drew Maras, and Jon Maras all had singles as well.  Quigley pitched 6 2/3 innings allowing two earned runs on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts.  Haldeman pitched the final 2 1/3 innings allowing three hits with three strikeouts.

Hartford-Humboldt put together a two-run second, one-run third, two-run fourth, and one-run fifth inning to take a 6-5 lead over the Mudcats heading into the bottom of the fifth on Sunday.  Dell Rapids then had two very big innings.  The Mudcats scored five times in the fifth and seven more in the sixth for a 17-6 lead, and the game ended on the 10-run rule in the seventh inning.

Tyler Renken had a triple and single in the game.  D Maras had two hits.  J. Maras had a double.  Drew DeMers, Quigley, Hentges, and Cam Morrison all had singles in the game.

Hartford Sparx Finished 3-1-1 in Pierre

The Hartford Sparx 18U softball team finished 3-1-1 in five games in Pierre on Saturday, June 19th and Sunday, June 20th.

Hartford opened the weekend with a 13-1 win over the OhNos on Saturday.  The Sparx scored 11 times in the bottom of the first inning and held OhNos to just two total hits in the game.

Brooke Opitz had three hits, including a triple, and two RBIs.  Avery Evans had two hits, one a double, and an RBI.  Grace Harden also had two hits and an RBI.  Olivia Brown finished with two hits, one of them a double.  McKenna Sichmeller had a hit with two RBIs.  Addy Kramer had a double with an RBI.  Jenna Lueth had a hit and RBI, and Riley Morrison had a hit.  Harden pitched four innings allowing one run, which was unearned, on two hits with eight strikeouts.

The Sparx scored five times in the bottom of the third and held on to beat SD The Assault 18U by a score of 5-4.  Brown had a double with two RBIs in the game.  Caitlyn Maa also had a double and an RBI.  Opitz, Harden, Evans, Taylor Kunzweiler, and Lueth all collected a single in the game.  Kunzweiler pitched five innings allowing four earned runs on five hits with seven walks and a strikeout.

The third game of the day on Saturday was against the Jamestown Outlaws.  Both teams scored a run in the first inning, and then the game remained scoreless finishing in a 1-1 tie.  Jamestown had four hits, while Hartford had five hits in the game.  Kramer had two of the five hits and an RBI.  Optiz, Maa, and Sichmeller each had a hit.  Harden pitched four innings allowing an earned run on four hits with three walks and nine strikeouts.

In the first game on Sunday, Hartford scored five times in the first two innings and finished the win over Black Hills Synergy by a scored of 7-2.  Harden had three hits with two RBIs.  Opitiz had two hits, one of them a double.  Sichmeller also had two hits.  Kramer had a hit with three RBIs.  Evans had a single and an RBI.  Brown, Lueth and Morrison also had singles.  Kunzweiler pitched four innings allowing two earned runs on five hits with a walk and four strikeouts.  Harden pitched one inning and finished with two strikeouts.

The Sparx met the Jamestown Outlaws again in their final game on Sunday.  This time the Outlaws scored two runs in the first, second and third innings while holding the Sparx to single runs in the second, third, and fourth innings.  The Outlaws handed Hartford their only loss, 6-3.  Morrison had two hits and an RBI.  Brown had a single and an RBI.  Sichmeller added a double.  Opitz, Maa, Kramer, and Lueth all had singles in the game.  Harden had an RBI as well.  Harden pitched 3 2/3 innings allowing six earned runs on eight hits with three walks and six strikeouts.

Hartford Sparx Win Two over Yankton Fury Fire

The Hartford Sparx 18U softball team got two wins over the Yankton Fury Fire 18U team on Thursday, June 17th.  The Sparx won by scores of 12-2 and 11-6.

In the first game, Yankton held a 2-1 lead after the first inning.  Hartford scored two times in the bottom of the second, but it was a nine-run third inning that solidified the win for Hartford.

McKenna Sichmeller had two triples in the game with four RBIs.  Grace Harden had three hits.  Caitlyn Maa finished with two hits and an RBI.  Addy Kramer had a triple and RBI.  Brooke Opitz, Avery Evans, Taylor Kunzweiler, and Riley Morrison all had an a hit and RBI.  Jenna Lueth also had an RBI.  Harden pitched all four innings allowing two earned runs on five hits with a walk and five strikeouts.

Despite a closer score in the second game, the Sparx still took control of the game early in the top of the first scoring seven times.  Yankton cut the lead to 7-5 with a five-run second inning, but Hartford make sure there would not be a comeback as they scored four times in the top of the third.

Olivia Brown had three hits and four RBIs in the second game.  Kramer had a hit and two RBIs.  Evans, Kunzweiler, and Morrison all had a hit and RBI.  Maa finished with two hits.  Opitz and Lueth both had an RBI.  Kunzweiler pitched three innings allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Garretson Scores Late Runs to Beat West Central 16U

West Central 16U held a 7-5 lead after four innings, but Garretson scored four runs late in the game to steal a 9-7 win on Thursday, June 17th.

Garretson got off to a quick start in the top of the first inning.  The first seven batters reached safely, and Garretson scored four times before an out was recorded.  West Central responded with a big inning of their own in the bottom of the first to tie the game 4-4.  Duece Sherard led the inning with a triple.  Justin Zirpel followed with an RBI double.  Gage Nelson and Dylan Stromer had back-to-back RBI triples, and Braydon Odegaard had an RBI single.

West Central took the lead in the bottom of the fourth after Garretson scored a run in the top of the fourth.  Stromer was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to tie the game 5-5.  Odegaard followed with a two-run single to give West Central the 7-5 lead. 

Garretson, however, scored three times in the top of the fifth inning with two outs to regain the lead at 8-7.  They added one more run in the top of the sixth.

Odegaard had two hits with three RBIs.  Zirpel had two hits, including a double, with an RBI.  Stromer had a triple with two RBIs.  Nelson had two hits, one of those a triple.  Sherard finished with a triple, and Andrew Zimmer had a double.

Owen Heath pitched four innings allowing five runs, three earned, on six hits with one walk and six strikeouts.  Zimmer pitched 1 2/3 innings allowing four runs, none of them earned, on three hits with three walks and a strikeout.  Odegaard pitched an inning allowing a hit and two strikeouts.

Gamecocks Win Postponed Game over Colman

The Hartford-Humboldt Gamecocks hosted the Colman A’s in a make-up game on Tuesday, June 15th.  The Gamecocks rallied in the later innings for a 12-5 victory.

The Gamecocks did have an early lead after two runs in the bottom of the first inning.  Drew DeMers scored on an error, and Cam Quigley scored on a double-play to give Hartford-Humboldt a 2-0 lead.  After a run by Colman in the top of the second, Drew Maras had an RBI single in the bottom of the inning to push the lead back to two runs at 3-1. 

Colman tied the game in the top of the fourth on a two-run home run, and then took the lead in the top of the fifth on another two-run home run.  Colman led 5-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Gamecocks regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth.  Broc Haldeman had an RBI ground out, and Cole Hellie drove home two on a single for a 6-5 lead.  Two more runs scored in the bottom of the sixth when Joe Hanisch scored on a steal of home and an RBI single by DeMers.  The Gamecocks scored three more times in the bottom of the seventh.  Hanisch had a two-run single and then later scored on an error.  The final run scored on an RBI double by DeMers in the bottom of the eighth.

DeMers had three hits, including a double, with two RBIs.  Hanisch had two hits and two RBIs.  Hellie had a hit and two RBIs.  Broc Haldeman and Devon Garry both had hits and an RBI.  Quigley, Noah Vettrus, and Cahd Morrison all had two hits. 

Micah Warrington pitched four innings allowing five earned runs on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts.  Garry pitched four innings allowing three hits with one walk and four strikeouts.  Haldeman pitched one inning allowing a hit and had one strikeout.

Mulder Hits Game-Winner for West Central Royal 14U

With the game tied 9-9 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Cooper Mulder hit a single to left field scoring Landon Holewa for the walk-off game-winner giving West Central Royal 14U a 10-9 win over Flandreau on Monday, June 14th in Humboldt.

Flandreau struck first with a run in the top of the first inning, but West Central scored twice in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Mulder and an RBI ground out by Stone Loof.  West Central extended the lead when Preston Hostetler scored on an error to make the score 3-1.  Flandreau tied the game, 3-3, in the top of the fourth with two runs.

West Central regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run double by Holewa.  Both teams scored in the fifth inning.  Mulder scored on a single by Quincey Stephens, and West Central led 6-4 after five innings.  Flandreau took thee lead in the top of the sixth with four runs, but West Central responded with three in the bottom of the sixth.  Mulder drove home two with a single to tie the game 8-8.  CJ DenBoer scored on a wild pitch to give West Central the lead again 9-8.  Flandreau tied the game in the top of the seventh inning, 9-9, to force extra innings, but Mulder’s hit ended the game in the eighth.

Mulder finished with three hits and four RBIs.  Holewa had four hits, one a double, with two RBIs.  DenBoer had three hits.  Hostetler finished with two hits.  Loof and Stephens both had a hit and an RBI.  Gavin DeHaven had a double.  Lando Whiting and Cody Opitz both had hits.

DenBoer pitched four innings allowing three runs, all unearned, on two hits with one walk and five strikeouts.  Whiting pitched two innings allowing five runs, two earned, on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts.  Hostetler pitched two innings allowing one earned run on a hit with two walks and two strikeouts.

Mudcats Defeat Wood Ducks in League Play

The Hartford-Humboldt Wood Ducks fell to the Dell Rapids Mudcats in Cornbelt League action on Sunday, June 13th by a score of 15-8.

Dell Rapids got two runs in the top of the first inning.  The Wood Ducks got a run back in the bottom of the second when Phil Madsen scored on a wild pitch.  Dell Rapids scored another run in the fourth and two more in the fifth for a 5-1 lead.

The sixth inning became interesting for both teams.  Dell Rapids scored seven times in the top of the inning to go ahead 12-1, but the Wood Ducks avoided the 10-run rule by scoring six times themselves to cut the lead to 12-7.

The Mudcats, however, scored another two runs in the seventh, and one more in the top of the night while the Wood Ducks were only able to get one more run in the bottom of the ninth.

Madsen and Austin King both had a double and a single in the game.  Nathan Adrian and Tyler Lundborg each had a single.  Blake Svoboda took the loss.

Gamecocks Fall to Lennox in Cornbelt League Game

The Hartford-Hubmoldt Gamecocks dropped a Cornbelt League game to Lennox on Sunday, June 13th.  Lennox scored five runs in the first four innings and took the win 8-1.

The Gamecocks’ lone run was driven in by Quiqley on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth.

Quiqley finished with two hits, including a double, and an RBI.  Clayton Hanisch had a double.  Jon Maras had two hits.  Drew DeMers and Joe Hanisch both had a hit.

Tyler Renken pitched six innings allowing five earned runs on five hits with eight walks and three strikeouts.  DeMers pitched two innings giving up three earned runs on four hits with two walks and a strikeout.  J. Hanisch pitched one inning allowing three hits with two strikeouts.

The Gamecocks currently have a 5-7 record.

Hartford Sparx 18U Wins Silver Bracket Tournament in Mitchell

The Hartford Sparx 18U softball team won the silver bracket of the Lowell Rang Memorial Tournament in Mitchell.  The tournament was held Friday, June 11th through Sunday, June 13th.

The Sparx won their first pool play game on Friday against Parkston by a score of 4-0.  Hartford scored a run in the fourth and three in the fifth while holding Parkston to just three hits in the game.

Avery Evans had three hits.  Grace Harden, Brooke Opitz, and Kaylee Olson all had hits and an RBI.  McKenna Sichmeller had a double.  Taylor Kunzweiler also had a hit.  Harden pitched all seven innings allowing just three hits with eight strikeouts.

Hartford played their final two pool play games on Saturday, dropping both of them.  In the first game, Metro Select Nationals scored two runs in the first and two in the second for a 4-0 lead.  The Sparx rallied for three in the bottom of the seventh on a three-run double by Caitlyn Maa, but she was left on second base as the tying run as the game ended.

Harden had two hits.  Maa had a double and three RBIs.  Jenna Lueth, Opitz, Addy Kramer, Olivia Brown, and Olson all had hits.  Kunzweiler pitched six innings allowing four runs, three earned, on nine hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

The Sparx then lost their final pool play game after giving up three runs to Fusion Heat to fall by a score of 6-5.  Harden and Kramer both had two hits and an RBI.  Brown and Kunzweiler both had a single and an RBI.  Evans and Sichmeller both had a double in the game.  Riley Morrison also had a hit.  Harden pitched six innings allowing six earned runs on 11 hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

After going 1-2 in pool play, Hartford was set as the #2 seed in the silver division, single-elimination tournament on Sunday.

In the first game, the Sparx blanked Diamonds Elite 8-0 by only allowing two hits.  Sichmeller finished with a triple and two RBIs.  Harden had two hits, including a double, and an RBI.  Lueth had a hit and two RBIs.  Maa, Evans, and Brown all had a hit.  Olson pitched five innings allowing just two hits and had five strikeouts.

Hartford had another shutout in their second game beating the Rebels 4-0.  The Sparx scored all four runs in the bottom of the third.  Maa had two more hits, including a double, with two RBIs.  Kramer had a hit and an RBI.  Harden, Sichmeller, and Lueth all had singles.  Kunzweiler pitched three innings allowing three hits with three walks and two strikeouts.  Harden also pitched three innings allowing a hit while striking out three batters.

The Sparx then took the championship game 6-1 over Mitchell Adrenaline.  Hartford scored five times in the top of the third, while Mitchell’s lone run came in the bottom of the inning.  Hartford added one more in the top of the sixth.

Brown had two hits, one home run and one double, with three RBIs.  Knuzweiler and Sichmeller both had a hit and an RBI.  Riley Morrison had two hits.  Opitz, Harden, Kramer, and Evans all had singles.   Harden pitched six innings allowing one earned run on six hits with five strikeouts.
