Larry Wade

Larry Wade, 63, of Sioux Falls, died Friday, March 1, 2013 at the VA Regional Medical Center in Sioux Falls.

Larry was born August 10, 1949 at Detroit, MI. He grew up in Detroit where he received his education, graduating from high school in 1968. Following high school, he attended college for a short time, then entered military service and served in the U.S. Air Force for 8 years.

On August 16, 1986, he was united in marriage with René Martinson-Lee at Sioux Falls, SD.

He moved to Sioux Falls and was employed with the EROS Data Center as a photo technician for 24 years. In 2012 he retired from Wells Fargo after 9 years.

Larry was active as an umpire for women’s slowpitch softball for 16 years. He loved the outdoors and particularly enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting. He also cherished time he spent with family and friends.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, René, of Sioux Falls, SD; his sons, Jim (Lisa) Lee of Aberdeen, SD, Robert (Lizz) Lee of San Antonio, TX, and Shaun (fiancé, Dyonne) Lee, of Dell Rapids, SD; 10 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; his brother, Richard Wade, of Detroit, MI; a sister-in-law, Karen Wade, of Champagne, IL; 2 nieces; one nephew; and his hunting buddy, Kevin Hakeman, of Watertown, SD. Larry was predeceased by his parents; and one brother, Charles Wade.

Funeral services will begin 10:30 am Tuesday at Peace Lutheran Church. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 to 7:00 pm Monday at Miller West Funeral Chapel, 6200 W. 41st Street.  www.millerfh.com

Blaine D. “Bud” Sagmoe

Blaine D. “Bud” Sagmoe, age 71 of Yankton, SD passed away Thursday, February 21, 2013 at the Avera Sister James Care Center, Yankton, SD.  He battled with brain cancer for 21 1/2 months.  Funeral services will be 1:30 pm, Monday, February 25, 2013 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Yankton, SD with Rev. Dave Wildermuth officiating.  Burial will be in the Garden of Memories.  Visitations will begin at 5:00 PM, Sunday, February 24, 2013 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, with a 7:00 PM Prayer Service.  Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.  Pallbearers are John Sagmoe, Benjamin Sagmoe, Brett Marlette, Mark Clayton, Jim Zoeller, and Brian Fedde.  Honorary Pallbearers are Clarence Hauger, Cy Groetken, Charles Bender, and Boyd Jones, his nieces and nephews, Terri Lynn LaFargue, Terri Lee Licktieg, Paul Berg, Kristin Meyer, Steven Meyer, and Molly Scherff.

Blaine was born September 22, 1941, in Dell Rapids, SD, to Phillip and Anna (Sward) Sagmoe.  He was baptized and confirmed at Dell Rapids Lutheran Church and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church since 1964.   He graduated at Dell Rapids High School and took one semester at SDSU.  He married Judy Leuning on April 13, 1963 at Dell Rapids Lutheran Church.  Blaine was a member of Sportsman Club in Dell Rapids and Sertoma Club in earlier years in Yankton.  He worked at the Lumber Yard in Dell Rapids, then at Hanson Glass and Paint in Sioux Falls, SD.  He then moved to Yankton in July of 1964 after purchasing the Fejfar Paint Store, which became Yankton Glass & Paint and then the name changed to Yankton Paint and Decorating, which he owned and operated for 42 years, until his retirement on January 1, 2007.  He made the most of these years enjoying his hobbies:  Hunting, fishing, traveling, boating on Lewis and Clark Lake, and golfing with his family and friends.  He took a special joy when his daughters and their families would visit and enjoyed using “grandpa’s toys”. 

He is survived by his wife, Judy Kay; daughters, Sonya (Chris) Nielson from Grand Forks, ND and Linda (Carey) Sagmoe-Peterson; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; brothers, John (Verna) Sagmoe of Dixon, IL, and Don (Marsha) Sagmoe of Dell Rapids, SD.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, Bernt & Dorothea Sagmoe, and John & Amelia Sward.

Terrie Wolles McCoss

Terrie McCoss, age 35, of Marshall, formerly of Dell Rapids, SD. passed away on Monday, February 18, 2013 as a result of a motor vehicle accident near Granite Falls.  Mass of Christian Burial will be at 12:30 P.M. Friday, February 22nd at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. Visitation will be held Thursday from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. with a 7:00 P.M. prayer service at Hamilton Funeral Home in Marshall. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the Mass.

Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Dell Rapids, SD. Condolences may be given at www.hamiltonfh.com.  Terrie Lynn was born on May 13, 1977 in Dell Rapids, SD to James and Shirley (Bunkers) Wolles. She was baptized, received First Communion and was confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dell Rapids. Terrie grew up in Dell Rapids and graduated from St. Mary High School. Following high school, she attended college at Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD and the University of Minnesota, graduating with music therapy degree. Upon graduation, Terrie worked for Augustana Care Corporation in Minnetonka as the assistant activities director.

On June 25, 2005, Terrie was united in marriage to David James McCoss in Marshall, MN. To this union a daughter was born, namely Josie. Terrie began employment as the music therapist and activities director at the Granite Falls Manor in May 2006. She was a board certified music therapist, an accomplished pianist, and an outstanding vocal performer.

Terrie passed away on Monday, February 18, 2013, as the result of a motor vehicle accident. She had reached the age of 35 years, 9 months and 5 days. Terrie is survived by her loving husband Dave and daughter, Josie of Marshall; two stepchildren Megan (Mike) Weber and Garrett McCoss; stepgrandchildren, Maddie and Tanner Weber; parents, Jim and Shirley Wolles of Dell Rapids; seven siblings, Lisa (Lance) Buechler of Tualatin, OR, Diane (John) Thomas of Sioux Falls, Karen (Jerry) Steffen of Cresco, IA, Peggy (Chad) McGuire of Sioux Falls, Nancy (Paul) Shellum of Garretson, SD. Robert (Sherri) and Tony (Brenda) Wolles of Dell Rapids, SD; father and mother in law, Douglas and Karen McCoss of Granite Falls; also many nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.

Terrie was preceded in death by her stepson, Clint McCoss and Grandparents.

Terrie will be remembered as a devoted wife and mother, her love for people and her continual smiling face.

Marcie Mailey Ljunggren

Marcie A. Mailey was born on March 7, 1955 with her twin brother, Mark to her parents, Jack and June Mailey in Dell Rapids, SD. She grew up and attended school in Dell Rapids. She graduated from Dell Rapids High School in 1973. She married her high school sweetheart, Gale Ljunggren on July 7, 1973. The couple made their home in Dell Rapids and have continued to live there since that time. Marcie worked for Smith Publishing Inc. from 1973-1979. She then worked for the Dell Rapids Medical Clinic until transferring down to Avera Health in 1992 working in the ITC. She worked there until the time of her death.

Marcie was a member of the United Methodist Church, she loved spending time with her grandchildren and family who were the joy of her life. She loved to crochet and cross stitch which she made many gifts for family, friends and co-workers.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Gale of Dell Rapids; her two sons, Jason (Tiffany) Ljunggren of Tea and Joshua (Bobbie) Ljunggren of Battlefield, MO; her parents, Jack and June Mailey of Dell Rapids; her parents-in-law, Don and Shirley Ljunggren of Dell Rapids; her brother, Marshall (Denise) Mailey of Dell Rapids, her two brothers-in-law, Alan (Linda) Ljunggren of Dell Rapids and Gary (Chris) Ljunggren of Billings, MT; her two sisters-in-law, Sherri (Jay) Linnemann and Shirlette Ljunggren of Dell Rapids; her five grandchildren, Koby, Xaviera and Jack of Battlefield, MO and Troy and Kiarra of Sioux Falls; special friends, Bob and Sheila Gunderson along with a hosts of nieces, nephews, and friends.

She is preceded in death by her sister, Marjorie (Dawn) Muhs; her twin brother, Mark Mailey, paternal grandparents, Lloyd and Eula Mailey, maternal grandparents, David and Agnes Vaselaar and nephews, Jeremiah Mailey and infant, Tucker James Muhs.

Charles Wilber

Charlie Wilber, 93, of Miller, passed away, Thursday, February 14, 2013 at the Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital in Miller.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 22, 2013 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Miller with Father Chester Murtha, celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Ann’s Cemetery, Miller with military honors. Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, February 21, 2013 with a 5:00 p.m. rosary and 7:00 p.m. prayer service, all at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Miller.

Ruth Nebben

Ruth E. Nebben, 88, passed away Friday, February 8, 2013 at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls. Ruth was born August 30, 1924 at Chester, SD to Ed and Mary (Birnbaum) Michel. She attended Moody County country schools and graduated from Trent High School in 1942. Ruth married Palmer Nebben on September 23, 1944 at Huntimer Catholic Church near Colton, SD. She worked for Civil Service while Palmer was in the service in New Mexico. They returned to Colman and Ruth was a homemaker and then a bookkeeper for many years at the Colman Elevator. They moved into Colman in 2001. Ruth was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, Altar Society, Catholic Daughters and Senior Citizens. She enjoyed gardening and playing cards.

Ruth is survived by her husband Palmer, Colman, a daughter Marlene (Daryl) Wussow, Sioux Falls, a son Larry (Lois) Nebben, Wentworth, SD, five grandchildren, Angie (Gary) Schlenker, Christy Nebben, Amy (Adam) Morrison, Stacey (Erik) Nelson, Zach (Katie) Nebben, a great-granddaughter Samantha Schlenker, two sisters, Darlene Goode, Milwaukee, OR, Shirley (Paul) Scholten, Sioux Falls and two sisters-in-law, Carol Michel, Harbor City, CA and Connie Michel, Dell Rapids, SD. S. Gabriella Baumberger OSB

S. Gabriella Baumberger OSB, 91, died on February 7, 2013. A wake service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 10, 2013, and the funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, February 11 at 11:00 a.m., both in Bishop Marty Memorial Chapel in Yankton. Burial will be in the monastery cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton.

Rosella Ann was born October 10, 1921, the tenth of eleven children of Rudolph and Mary (Bowen) Baumberger of Colton, South Dakota. She went to Grinde Country School, Colton Public School, and graduated high school from St. Mary’s Academy, Dell Rapids, South Dakota.

Rosella Ann left the family farm and entered Sacred Heart Monastery on September 1, 1939. She was invested as a novice on June 23, 1940 and received the name Gabriella. She made her first profession on June 24, 1941 and her final profession on June 24, 1944. She attended Mount Marty College, Yankton, South Dakota and received her degree in elementary education in 1959.

S. Gabriella served as an elementary teacher for forty-one years. She taught primary grades in Epiphany, Tabor, Hoven, Salem, Yankton, and Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Richardton, North Dakota; Lincoln, York, St. Paul, and Omaha, Nebraska. In Salem, she was the principal as well as a primary teacher. She spent a year as a ward clerk at St. Thomas More Hospital, Canon City, Colorado, but returned to teaching. After retiring from teaching, she volunteered for the Development Office and College Relations at Mount Marty College, and in the Monastery Print Shop. She was an accomplished Calligrapher and graciously did projects for those who asked.

S. Gabriella remembered her students with great affection, and kept lists of names for every class she taught. She was known for her teaching children to read with great expression. Born with a physical disability, she never wavered in her enthusiasm to live an active life though her life was marked by surgeries. She was also very devoted to her family and her home parish, St. Joseph’s, Huntimer, South Dakota.

S. Gabriella is survived by her Benedictine community and her nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and all her ten siblings.  http://www.wintzrayfuneralhome.com

Bernadean Carlson

Bernadean G. (Kogel) Carlson, 88, passed away Friday, February 1, 2013 at Brookview Manor after a courageous battle with cancer. Visitation will be from 5 PM until 7 PM Monday, February 4, 2013 at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings, SD. A private burial for family members only will be held at the Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to either, the American Cancer Society or the Children’s Museum, Brookings, SD. At one time, the museum building was an elementary school where Bernadean taught, and there is an old photo on exhibit showing her and some of the other teachers of that time.

Bernadean Carlson was born March 10, 1924, in Woonsocket, SD, to William and Ethlyn (Shreve) Kogel. She married Melvin M. (Swede) Carlson on November 18, 1945 in Pipestone, Minnesota. He preceded her in death in 1990.

She is survived by daughters, Kiti Lyn (R.T.) Lawton, Colorado Springs, CO and Cheryl V. (James) Mergen, Sioux Falls, SD; sons, Timothy M. Carlson, Brookings, SD and Thomas M. (Lynn) Carlson, Brookings, SD; 9 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren; sister, Janice Guderian, Hamilton, GA and sister-in-law, Rosie Binger, Tulsa, OK.

Bernadean graduated from Woonsocket High School in 1942 and from Madison Teacher’s College in 1967. She taught school in Woonsocket, Dell Rapids and Brookings for over 40 years and received a Brookings Teacher of the Year Award. She was a member of First Methodist Church, the Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority and the Retired Teachers Association. Some of her pleasures in life were reading, tending to her flowers, traveling, to include 9 trips to Maui with family, and especially spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Allene Becker

Allene Becker, 85, of Dell Rapids passed away on Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Her funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 4, 2013 at the United Methodist Church, Dell Rapids. Interment will be in the Dell Rapids Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 3, 2013 at Kahler Funeral Home.

Allene Isaacs was born on April 12, 1927 at Austins Ville, VA, the daughter of Clyde and Willie Isaacs. She grew up in Galax, VA and graduated from Galax High School in 1945. She attended college in Bluefield, WV for two years. She worked at different jobs until she enlisted in the Air Force in 1950. She served as a high level communications specialist during the Korean Conflict earing the National Defense Service Medal and the Air Force Service Medal. While in the Air Force, she met Gerald Becker of Egan, SD. They married on January 28, 1955 at Luverne, MN. They lived in Sioux Falls and later in 1955 they moved to Dell Rapids. She worked as a bookkeeper for L. G. Everist and Dr. Robert Merkley for many years. She married Albert Boeve on April 12, 1986 at Dell Rapids. They lived in Baltic. Mr. Boeve died in 1994. She then moved back to Dell Rapids.

She was a member of the Dell Rapids United Methodist Church, Dell Rapids American Legion, the Dell Rapids Golf Course and served on the Dell Rapids Ambulance service.

She is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and one sister.

Those left to cherish her memory are her sons, Jack (Charlotte) Lawrence of Galax, VA, Steve (Ilene) Becker of Albuquerque, NM, Tony (Dianne) Becker of Brookings and Brian (Jackie) Becker of Walcott, ND; her 8 grandchildren; her 4 great granddaughters and her brothers, Grayson of Jacksonville, FL, Joe of Independence, VA and Ray of Galax, VA.

Lauraine Hawks

Lauraine G. Hawks, 90, of Dell Rapids, passed away on Monday, January 28, 2013 at the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center.

Lauraine Gilmore Hawks (nee Wilson) was born August 24, 1922 in Wessington Springs, South Dakota, the daughter of Wilhelmina (Minnie) and William Wilson. Following a thirteen year courtship, she married Lester Hawks in 1955. The couple settled in Dell Rapids, where she lived for fifty-eight years. They had two children, Bille Kay and Lester. A master craftswoman, she created beautiful embroidered works as gifts for family and friends, and occasionally sold her work. Her passion for reading, art, crossword puzzles, and animals was well-known to her friends and had a profound influence in her children’s lives. She had just two natural children, but many other young people found a warm welcome in her kitchen and a sympathetic ear in “Marm,” as she was known to them. She was a member of the Dell Rapids United Methodist Church for over forty years. She died quietly at the Dell Rapids Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center on January 28. Lauraine was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and two sisters, Vana Grover and June Davis. She is survived by her children, Lester Hawks of Dell Rapids, and Bille Wickre of Albion, Michigan, and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 2, 2013 at 1:00 at the Kahler Funeral Home in Dell Rapids.

Inurnment will be in the Dell Rapids Cemetery.
