Lauraine G. Hawks, 90, of Dell Rapids, passed away on Monday, January 28, 2013 at the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center.
Lauraine Gilmore Hawks (nee Wilson) was born August 24, 1922 in Wessington Springs, South Dakota, the daughter of Wilhelmina (Minnie) and William Wilson. Following a thirteen year courtship, she married Lester Hawks in 1955. The couple settled in Dell Rapids, where she lived for fifty-eight years. They had two children, Bille Kay and Lester. A master craftswoman, she created beautiful embroidered works as gifts for family and friends, and occasionally sold her work. Her passion for reading, art, crossword puzzles, and animals was well-known to her friends and had a profound influence in her children’s lives. She had just two natural children, but many other young people found a warm welcome in her kitchen and a sympathetic ear in “Marm,” as she was known to them. She was a member of the Dell Rapids United Methodist Church for over forty years. She died quietly at the Dell Rapids Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center on January 28. Lauraine was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and two sisters, Vana Grover and June Davis. She is survived by her children, Lester Hawks of Dell Rapids, and Bille Wickre of Albion, Michigan, and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 2, 2013 at 1:00 at the Kahler Funeral Home in Dell Rapids.
Inurnment will be in the Dell Rapids Cemetery.
