Barbara Hymans

Barbara Hymans, 64, of Dell Rapids, passed away on Friday, May 3, 2013 at her home in Dell Rapids after a year long battle with cancer. Her funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 6, 2013 at the United Methodist Church with Rev. Gwen Mader officiating. Interment will be in the Dell Rapids Cemetery. Barbara Ann was born on September 15, 1948 at Dell Rapids, SD, the daughter of Verlin and Maxine (Orcutt) Johnson. She attended school at Egan and graduated from Egan High School in 1966. She met Harold Hymans and they married July 5, 1968. He was in the Marines and they moved to Yuma, AZ for three years. After his discharge, they moved to a farm west of Colton. They had two daughters. The couple later divorced. Barb moved to Dell Rapids and started working for Terrace Manor in Dell Rapids. She worked there until poor health forced her retirement.

Barb was a member of the United Methodist Church. She enjoyed crafting and making craft projects for the many residence at Terrace Manor. She loved her family and grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her daughters, Robin (Raul) Figueroa of Forney, TX and Tanya Hymans of Dell Rapids; her five grandchildren, Nicole (Caleb) Dabney, Courtney Gores, Austin VanEngen, Bella Hymans and Taylor Figueroa; her two granddaughters, Cayla and Chloe; her brother, Harvey (Brenda) Johnson of Egan, SD and her three sisters, Verla (Roy) Schut of Brookings, Ellen (Jim) Hymans of Dell Rapids and Jeri (Scott) Daniels of Madison and her many nieces and nephews.

Agnes Gengler

Agnes M. Gengler, 88, passed away Friday, April 26, 2013 at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls. Agnes was born March 22, 1925 to Nicholas and Mary (Bormann) Gengler at Dell Rapids, SD. She received her education at DeVaney Country School. Agnes lived with her parents and cared for them until they passed away. Then she worked at the Dells Area Hospital in housekeeping for twenty years, retiring December 31, 2001. Agnes became a resident at Avera Prince of Peace Retirement Community in Sioux Falls in February 2010. She was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church in Colman, Catholic Daughters, Altar Society, American Legion Auxiliary and was a leader for Jr. Catholic Daughters. Agnes enjoyed gardening, baking, needlework and spending time with her nieces and nephew and their families.

Agnes is survived by five nieces, one nephew, and several great and great-great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Raymond, sister-in-law Odelia and two nieces, Joyce Parlet and Jeanne Van Holland.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 am Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at St. Peter Catholic Church, Colman, with burial in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Dell Rapids. A change of visitation is now 5:00 – 7:00 pm Tuesday at St. Peter Catholic Church, Colman with a 7:00 pm prayer service.

Violet Arionus

Violet J. Arionus, 79, of Dell Rapids, formerly of Trent, passed away on Monday, April 29, 2013 at the Dells Area Health Center. Her funeral service will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 2, 2013 in the Kahler Funeral Home Chapel. Inurment will be held at a later date. Visitation will begin at noon on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at Kahler Funeral Home with the family present at 6:00 p.m.

Violet J. Westerman was born on October 3, 1933 on a farm in rural Dell Rapids, the daughter of Fred and Kate (Fischer) Westerman. She grew up and attend country school east of Dell Rapids. She moved with her family into Dell Rapids and graduated from Dell Rapids High School in 1951. She worked at Stogies Cafe in Dell Rapids. She married Leland Arionus on February 17, 1953 in Pipestone, MN. The couple made their home on a farm in rural Trent before moving into Trent and then Sioux Falls. In 1966, they moved to Wausau, WI where Vi worked at Kraft Foods until her and Leland bought and ran LeeVi’s Evergreen Club. In 1981, they moved back to Trent. Vi started working at the Odd Fellows Home as a nursing assistant and then baked pies for her cousin Marcie Ellingson at the Dells Bowl. She then went to work as a cook for the Dell Rapids School District retiring in 1999. Leland passed away in 2002.

Vi was a member of the Trent Study Club and loved her Green Bay Packers.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her grandson, Christopher, two sisters, Shirley Westerman and Mildred Perschey and her brother, James Westerman.

She is survived by her son, Robert J. Arionus of Pollock, LA; her daughters, Angyla (Robert) Lewis and Tonya Grimes both of Trent; her grandchildren, Nathan Lewis, Amanda Grimes, Adam Grimes, Harold Grimes III, Samantha (Gridley) Hoover and Andrew Gridley and her six great grandchildren.

Jim Gerlach

Jim L. Gerlach, 65, passed away Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at Sanford Medical Center, Sioux Falls, SD. Jim was born September 11, 1947 at Parkston, SD to Emil and Helen (Dahlke) Gerlach. He started school at Baker Country School #39 and graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1965. Jim attended Stewarts School of Hairstyling and worked in Sioux Falls until he was drafted into the United States Army. After his discharge, Jim married Diane Palmer on November 12, 1967 at Dell Rapids, SD. They moved to Flandreau, SD in 1969 and he worked at the Lady Bug and then Personal Touch where he was currently working. Jim was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, served on the church council, was Past Grand Patron of the Order of Eastern Star and Past Master of the Masonic Lodge. He was the Moody County Selective Service Officer for twenty years. Jim was a member of El Riad Shrine and enjoyed getting circus tickets to children. He was also an avid Twins and Vikings fan.

Jim is survived by his wife Diane, two children, Shane (Donelle), Yankton, Nicolle (Randy) Geuke, Deadwood, four grandchildren, Brittany, Andrew (Brianna), and Cierra Morris and Derek Gerlach, two great-grandchildren, Avery Morris and Easton Morris, three sisters, Sharon (Harold) Guericke, Mitchell, Marlene (Dale) Wintemute, Madrid, Spain, Cheryl (Kenny) Schuman, Mitchell, three brothers, Gerald (Dianne), Fargo, Bob, Minneapolis, Steve (Jenny), Mt. Vernon, SD, three sisters-in-law, Bette Gerlach, Alliance, NE, Lois Gerlach, Stickney, Barb Palmer, Sioux Falls, many nieces and nephews, Jim’s beauty shop family, Dave and Deb Feske, Janel Kneebone and special friends, Mike and Kathi Wede and Gail Mooney. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, father and mother-in-law, Walter and Evelyn Palmer and two brothers, Gary and Ron.

Robert “Bob” Stenberg

Robert “Bob” D. Stenberg, 85, of Dell Rapids passed away on Thursday, April 18, 2013 at the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center after a lengthy illness with cancer. His funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. Interment will be in the Colman Cemetery with Military Rites provided by the Dell Rapids American Legion Post. Bob was born August 22, 1927, the third son of Ove and Alma Stenberg, of Colman, SD. The family, which eventually consisted of seven children, was part of a larger, very musical family in the strong Danish community of hard-working farmers in rural Colman. His early years included stories of hard work, fun times, amazing grace, and lots of love that greatly shaped Bob’s character. He was a graduate of Egan High School in 1945, and attended a bit of college at Iowa State.

Bob met Arlene Satre through his sister Arlene, and they were married on September 3, 1949. Theirs was a marriage that endured and flourished. He farmed with his brother DeVere near Sioux Falls until he was activated in the Air National Guard during the Korean Conflict. The young family which now included daughter Candace, moved to an air force base near Rapid City. Roxanne was born ‘out west’. After that stint, he farmed near Colman, where Sheryl was born. Farming years included Renner and Trent before their final move to Dell Rapids. Bob became an active member of each community in which he lived, volunteering, serving in the churches, and making life-long friends. His strong love of family held it all together.

Bob loved the land. Every farming decision was made with the latest knowledge possible. He spent evenings pouring over farming magazines and publications. He was an environmentalist, an economist and businessman, an innovator, an experienced handyman, a mentor to young farmers, and a man of faith who knew farming depended on the rains and mercy of God.

Hobbies were a big part of his life. He had a great love for music. His long membership in the Mandskor and church choir brought him much joy. He was always eager to attend concerts and musical stage productions. Woodworking and stained glass brought much beauty. He and Arlene loved to travel–especially to see the wonderful family members in Denmark.

Bob’s community service included participation on township boards from 1952-1984. Helping organize the Association of Towns and Townships in SD, Bob did diligent homework and worked for the best interest for all. He served as Chairman of the Minnehaha County Planning and Zoning Commission and was active in the American Legion.

Robert is preceded in death by his parents, brother DeVere, sister Elizabeth, and his dear wife Arlene.

He is survived by his daughters Candace Trautman (Phillips), Roxanne Heimbuck (Randal), and Sheryl Kelso (Ronald); brothers Virgil, David, and Bennett and sister Arlene Lellelid; eight grandchildren, 7 great granddaughters, and many nieces and nephews.

Mattie Wood

Mattie E. Wood, 96, of Dell Rapids passed away on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center. Mattie’s funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 22, 2013 in the Kahler Funeral Home Chapel. The family will be present for visitation from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday in the funeral home.

Mattie Wood passed from this world on April 17, 2013 at the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center where she had been a resident since the summer of 2012. She was born in Ward Township to parents Thomas E. Dexter and Laura M. Anderson Dexter. She and her Three siblings were raised on the family farm, and attended school in Ward. Her three siblings, sister Valeda, and brothers Eldon and Lee preceded her in death.

At age 22 she married Russell Fox in Flandreau, and four children were born of this marriage – Mary Ann, Gerald, Kathie, and Jim. She was widowed at the age of 26. Her sister Valdeda and her parents all pitched in and helped her with the four children. Later she moved to Sioux Falls, and that was her home until moving to Dell Rapids. In 1947 she met and married Elon A. Wood from Ohio. He preceded her in death in 1999. During her years in Sioux Falls, she worked for Morrells for over 30 years. She made many lifelong friends during her years there. After retirement, she went to work for Hy-Vee Foods, and worked there until her 90th birthday! She loved her job, and all the people she met. No matter where she worked she always did her best.

Mattie is survived by daughters Kim of Dell Rapids and Mary Ann of Spokane, Wa., grand children Regan, and Erin of Sioux Falls, CP of Spokane, and April and Beau of Deer Park, NY, great grandchildren, Haley, Allie, Annie, Michael and Matt of Sioux Falls, Jaden Patrick of Spokane, and Diamond, Destiny, and Lenny of New York. She is preceded in death by three of her children, Gerald, Kathie, and Jim.

During her lifetime she endured many tragedies but she never lost her faith, and always did her best. She was well loved and will be missed by many.

Ella Ree Doss

Ella Marie (aka) Ella Ree was born on September 10, 1915 to William and Carrie (McCarty) Breuer in Larchwood, IA. She attended rural public schools, and graduated from Rock Rapid high school. After a term at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, IA, she taught in a rural country school in Logan Township for six years.

On August 23, 1939, Ella Ree was united in marriage to Wayne Doss of Rock Rapids, IA. They raised four children and a special niece, Diane Breuer, who joined the family at age three after the death of her mother. They successively lived in Rock Rapids, Sioux Falls and Mitchell, SD before purchasing an International Harvester dealership in Salem, SD in 1950. Ella Ree was involved in the running of the business, and kept the books for the several years of its operation. After Wayne’s death in 1976 she and the family continued to operate the Implement Business for another 10 years.

Ella Ree was a member of St. Mary’s Altar Society, the National Catholic Society of Foresters, and part of a Kitchen Kadoodler Band for several years. She enjoyed playing cards and belonged to several different card clubs playing well into her 90’s. Ella Ree loved spending time with her grandchildren playing cards, board games and attending their various activities.

Ella Ree continued to live in Salem until 2003 when she moved to Sioux Falls to be closer to her children. Grateful for having shared her life are her four children and a special niece, Diane Breuer. Survivors include Allan Doss, Lakewood, WA, Dean (Donna) Doss, Brookings, SD, Carol Doss and Cindy (Bert) Olson, Sioux Falls, SD, and Diane (Mark) Jorgensen, Aberdeen, SD, ten grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Ella Ree was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Wayne, brothers Robert and Donald Breuer, three sisters; Sister Mary Eldred (Mildred Breuer), Eileen Kerkvliet and Betty Schrers and a daughter-in-law Toni Doss.

Robert “Bob” Richter

Robert H. Richter, 76, of Sioux Falls formerly of Madison passed away from leukemia on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at the Avera Dougherty Hospice House.

Funeral services will begin at 11:00 AM Saturday, April 20, 2013 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Sioux Falls. Visitation will begin at 9:30 AM on Saturday until the time of the service at the church. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery at Madison.

He farmed his entire life except for the years he served in the United States Navy from 1954 to 1957. He married Pat Belfrage on June 12, 1965.

His passion for farming, love of nature and love of music served him well. He sang bass in the Madison Methodist Church Choir and the Emissaries Quartet for about 25 years. He was a 50 year member of the United Methodist Church where he served on the finance committee. Presently, he was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church. He served on the Herman Township Board and Lake County Zoning Board for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Pat Richter, Sioux Falls, son, Max Richter, Minneapolis, MN; a daughter, Holly (Brent) Richter, St. Paul, MN; sister, Marlene (Eugene) Boer, Madison; sister-in-law, Peg (Keith) Nelson, Dell Rapids; step mother, Vi Belfrage, Sioux Falls; three nephews and three nieces.

Jeanette Nelson

Jeanette Bernice Nelson, 88, of Normal, IL, formerly of Dell Rapids, SD, passed away on Friday, April 12, 2013 at Sugar Creek Alzheimer’s Special Care Center, Normal, IL.  Her funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at the United Methodist Church, Dell Rapids. Interment will be in the Graceland Cemetery in Madison, SD. Visitation will start two hours prior to the start of the funeral service on Saturday.

Jeanette was born July 10, 1924 Madison, SD, the daughter of Robert and Lydia Jermis Heinold. She married Merritt Franklin Nelson on February 14, 1946 in Pipestone, MN. They made their home and farmed in Colman , South Dakota. Jeanette adapted well to the farm as she milked cows, tended chickens, and made numerous meals for the men during haying and harvest. She was active with the other farm wives in her area and loved to play cards and dance. Merrit passed away in 2002. She moved to Bloomington , IL in January 2004 to be near her family. She enjoyed friends and activities at Bickford House before moving to Sugar Creek where she was blessed by the love and care she received from staff.

Jeanette was a member of the United Methodist Church, Dell Rapids, SD, the Senior Citizens Club, Jolly Workers Extension Club, and Dell Rapids American Legion Auxiliary.

She is preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Raymond Heinold, one sister, Evelyn Heinold.

Jeanette is survived by her children, Douglas (Bev) Nelson of Gridley, IL and her daughter, Carol Nelson of Bloomington, IL; her two granddaughters, Kristen (Carl) Drake of Bloomington, IL and Kimberly (Andrew) Thompson of Chicago, IL, her three great grandchildren, Ben, Ella, and Dylan Drake of Bloomington, IL and numerous nieces and nephews with whom she had a close relationship.

William “Bill” Foster

William “Bill” Jay Foster, 72, of Dell Rapids passed away Thursday, April 11, 2013 at home surrounded by his family and friends. A final farewell and celebration of life will be held as an open house at the Dell Rapids Legion Hall May 4, 2013 from 5:00 to 10:00 PM. Bill wanted no “weeping and wailing” over his leaving. He hoped for joy, laughter and sharing memories.

Bill was born August 30, 1940 in Sioux Falls to parents Earl “Buzz” and Mary Ellen (Moran) Foster. He graduated from Cathedral High School in 1958. On May 4, 1963 Bill married Carol Sward in Dell Rapids. He was employed by John Morrell and Company for 41 years, retiring in 2006.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Carol; daughters, Deb Foster and Jill (Barry) Mark; sons; Billy (Sonja) Foster and Joe (Kerri) Foster; grandchildren, Eric, Sean, Noah and Cassidy; sister, Pat Sward; brother, Dale (Vikki) Foster; aunts, Peg Nieber and Pat Nelson; a host of other relatives and friends and his faithful four legged friends, Ranger and Sadie.
