Deuel Scorches the Nets in Second Half in Win over Cardinal Girls

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls were on the wrong end of a hot shooting Deuel Cardinal team in the second half.  Deuel shot 52% from three-point area on their way to a 55-42 win over St Mary at the Entringer Classic in Colman on Saturday, December 21st.

St Mary scored the first six points of the game, but Deuel scored the next six to tie the 6-6.  The teams went back and forth the remainder of the first quarter with Deuel leading 16-14 at the end of the quarter.  St Mary then held Deuel to just three second quarter points while scoring 11 to take a 25-19 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Deuel, however, got hot in the third quarter.  Deuel scored 24 points in the third quarter alone while holding St Mary to just nine points for a 43-34 lead heading into the fourth quarter.  Deuel outscored St Mary 12-8 in the final quarter for the win.

Ella Heinitz finished with 23 points, nine rebounds, and six steals.  Ella Griffin had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.  Courtney Brown and Maya Heinitz both ended the game with three points each.  Britney Lovre led Deuel with 33 points with nine three-point shots made.

St Mary (2-2) will host Chester Area in a double-header with the boys on Monday, December 30th.  Both games can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Girls Earn Road Win in Ramona

For the third game in a row, the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls basketball team was on the road at Ramona on Thursday, December 19th.  The Cardinals came home with a 56-38 win over the Oldham-Ramona/Rutland Raiders.

The Cardinals started hot, jumping out to a 5-0 lead.  The Raiders responded with a 5-0 run of their own to tie the game at 5-5 with 4:30 to play in the first quarter.  St Mary took control of the game with a 10-0 run and ended the first quarter leading 15-7.  The Cardinals started the second quarter on a 7-2 run and eventually pushed the lead to 35-20 by halftime.  The defense held the Raiders in check in the third quarter as Oldham-Ramona/Rutland only scored six points in the quarter.  St Mary led 43-26 heading into the final quarter, and the Cardinals coasted to the win throughout the fourth quarter.

St Mary (2-1) will take to the road one more time on Saturday, December 20th.  The Cardinals will play Deuel at the Entringer Classic in Colman with tip-off scheduled for 3:00 p.m.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Girls Post First Win of Season

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals picked up their first win of the season on the road against the Mitchell Christian Golden Eagles on Tuesday, December 17th.  The Cardinals earned a 59-54 victory.

The game was close all night long.  The Golden Eagles had a slight two point advantage at the end of the first quarter at 15-13.  The two teams ended the first half tied at 30-30.  The Cardinals opened the second half on a nine point run for a 39-30 lead.  Mitchell Christian responded with a 12-4 run to pull within a point, but the Cardinals got the last basket of the third quarter to lead 45-42 heading to the fourth quarter.  St Mary kept about a four point lead through much of the fourth quarter, but the Golden Eagles got a three-point basket to take a 54-53 with 2:29 left in the game.  The Cardinals finished the game on a 6-0 run for the win.

Ella Heinitz had a team-high 24 points for St Mary.  Courtney Brown added 15 points.  Audrey Hofer led Mitchell Christian with 27 points.

St Mary (1-1) will play their third road game in a row when the travel to Ramona to play the Oldham-Ramona/Rutland Raiders on Thursday, December 19th.

Cardinal Girls Drop Close Game to Start Season

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls basketball team traveled to Colman to take on the Colman-Egan Hawks to start the 2019-2020 season on Friday, December 13th.  Colman-Egan put together a big enough rally in the second quarter to come away with a 56-43 win.

St Mary held a small two-point lead after the first quarter at 11-9.  The Hawks outscored the Cardinals 14-7 in the second quarter to take a 23-18 halftime lead.  St Mary pulled within two points at 33-31 with under a minute to play in the third quarter, but Colman-Egan scored the final basket for a 35-31 lead heading to the fourth quarter.  The Hawks outscored St Mary 21-12 in the final quarter to seal the victory.

Courtney Brown led St Mary with 16 points.  Ella Heinitz had 13 points, and Ella Griffin finished with nine points.  Sydney Klein had a team-high four rebounds to go along with five points.  Colman-Egan was led by Mackenzie Hemmer with 28 points, Braiden Westley with 15 points, and Josie Mousel with 12 points.

The Cardinals (0-1) will travel to Mitchell to play Mitchell Christian in a double-header with the boys on Tuesday, December 17th.

Cardinal Girls Season Ends with 1-1 Region 4B Tourney

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls basketball team had their 2018-2019 season come to an end after going 1-1 in the Region 4B Tournament.  The Cardinals hosted the Oldham-Ramona/Rutland Raiders on Monday, February 18th in the opening round.  St Mary then played the Hanson Beaverettes in Alexandria on Tuesday, February 19th.

The Cardinals earned an opening round win over the Raiders by a score of 61-22 on Monday.  St Mary was in complete control of the game from the start.  The Cardinals led 17-4 after the first quarter of play.  St Mary then pushed the lead to 31-12 by halftime.  St Mary held the Raiders to just 10 second-half points while scoring 30 for the win.

Three players finished in double figures.  Ella Heinitz had 15 points and three steals.  Maddie Schwebach finished with 14 points, eight steals, and five rebounds.  Courtney Brown added 10 points and three rebounds.  Tana Harrington had eight points, and Clare Klein had seven points and nine rebounds.  Oldham-Ramona/Rutland was led by Khloe Tieman with 12 points.

St Mary then made the trip to Alexandria to play the Hanson Beaverettes on Tuesday in the next round of the Region 4B tournament.  The #2 seeded Beavers ended the Cardinals season with a 77-57 win.

The Cardinals trailed by just one point at the end of the first quarter at 17-16, but the Beaverettes pushed the lead to 14 points by halftime at 39-25.  Hanson continued to increase their lead throughout the second half.  They extended the lead to 17 points by the end of the third quarter at 60-43, and then ended the game with the 20-point victory.

Two players finished in double figures for St Mary.  Heinitz had 18 points in the game.  Ella Griffin finished with 11 points.  Harrington led the team in rebounds with six.  Hanson was led by Megan Guericke with 28 points.

St Mary’s season ends with an overall record of 11-10.  Four seniors had their careers come to an end for St Mary.  They were Carly Maxwell, Cassie Mullaney, Maddie Schwebach, and Clare Klein.

Cardinal Girls Regular Season Ends with Weekend Split

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls basketball team had their regular season come to an end after a couple of make-up games over the weekend.  The Cardinals traveled to Elkton-Lake Benton on Friday, February 15th, and then made the trip north to Arlington on Saturday, February 16th.

St Mary earned their 10th win of the season on Friday over the Elks with a 61-35 victory.  The Cardinals led at the end of every quarter break and outscored Elkton-Lake Benton in each quarter for the win.  St Mary had a seven point lead after the first quarter at 17-10, and then pushed that lead to 13 points by halftime at 33-20.  The third quarter put the game out of reach for the Cardinals as they outscored the Elks 17-9 for a 50-29 lead heading into the fourth quarter.  St Mary then outscored the Elks 11-6 in the final quarter.

Ella Heinitz finished the game with 23 points.  Ella Griffin had nine points.  Clare Klein and Addison Gilbert both had eight points.  Maddie Schwebach and Carly Maxwell both finished with four points each.  Jesse Busselman led Elkton-Lake Benton with 13 points.

St Mary then had to travel to Arlington on Saturday for a game against the Cardinals.  Arlington took the game 62-46.  The win by Arlington snapped a six-game winning streak for St Mary.  No stats were provided for the game.

The Cardinals finished the regular season with a winning record at 10-9 and a seventh seed in the Region 4B playoffs.  St Mary will host the Oldham-Ramona/Rutland Raiders on Monday, February 18th in the opening round of the Region 4B playoffs.  The seniors will also be recognized prior to the game.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Girls Win Fourth Straight, Evens Record

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls basketball team won their fourth straight game against the Centerville Tornadoes by a score of 62-35 on Friday, February 1st at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.  The win gave the Cardinals their longest win streak of the season and was also their fifth win in their last six games.

St Mary led from start to finish in the game.  The Cardinals started the game on a 10-0 run before Centerville got their first field goal.  St Mary closed out the quarter on a 9-0 run and led 19-2 after the first quarter.  The second quarter scoring gap was much closer between the two teams.  St Mary did outscore the Tornadoes, but it was by just two points at 14-12.  The Cardinals led 33-14 at halftime.

The Cardinals continued to extend their lead in the third quarter.  St Mary pushed the lead to 49-21 heading into the fourth quarter.  Centerville did outscore St Mary 14-13 in the final quarter.

Maddie Schwebach led St Mary with 15 points and seven rebounds.  Tana Harrington had 13 points and seven rebounds.  Elle Heinitz added 11 points, three rebounds, and four steals.

St Mary (8-8) will travel to Gayville to play the Gayville-Volin Raiders on Monday, February 4th in a girls and boys double-header.  Big Sioux Media will have a link to the Gayville-Volin web stream of the games.

Cardinal Girls Win Third Straight

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls won their third straight game after a 49-44 victory over the Lake Preston Divers on Friday, January 25th.  This is the second time the Cardinals have been on a three-game winning streak.

The Divers and Cardinals were locked in a tight battle throughout the game.  The two teams finished the first quarter tied at 12-12.  St Mary got the second quarter started on a 6-0 run in the first minute of the quarter to take an 18-12 lead.  The Divers then went on a 9-2 run over the next four plus minutes to take a 21-20 lead with 2:49 to play.  The Cardinals closed out the quarter on a 5-2 spurt to regain the lead and go into halftime with a 26-23 lead.

St Mary maintained a one-to-three point lead through most of the third quarter.  The Cardinals led 32-31 with 2:24 to play in the quarter before going on an 8-3 run to push their lead to six points at 40-34 heading into the fourth quarter.  The Cardinals never let the Divers get any closer than four points in the fourth quarter on their way to the victory.

Maddie Schwebach finished the game with 18 points, six rebounds, and four steals.  Ella Heinitz added 12 points, three rebounds, and four steals.  Ella Griffin added eight points.  Tana Harrington had six points and eight rebounds.  Lake Preston was led by Ashlyn Deknikker with 14 points and 11 rebounds.  Lindsay Hillestad also had 14 points along with eight rebounds.

St Mary (7-8) will host Centerville on Friday, February 1st.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Schwebach’s Buzzer-Beater Lifts Cardinals to Win

DRSM LogoMaddie Schwebach hit a game-winning shot with just four seconds remaining in the game to give the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals a 46-44 win over the Alcester-Hudson Cubs on Thursday, January 24th in Alcester.  The win was the second in a row for the Cardinals.

St Mary started quickly once again scoring 16 points in the first quarter.  The Cardinals led 16-10 after the quarter.  Both teams scored 10 points in the second quarter, and the Cardinals maintained their six point lead at halftime by a score of 26-20.  Alcester-Hudson pulled within a point by the end of the third quarter after outscoring St Mary 13-8.  The Cardinals led 34-33 heading into the final quarter.  St Mary outscored the Cubs but just one point, with Schwebach’s buzzer-beater being the difference in the game for the win.

Schwebach finished with 13 points, three rebounds, and two steals in the game.  Ella Heinitz had 14 points, two rebounds, and four steals.  Tana Harrington added six points.  Ella Griffin finished with five points, and Courtney Brown and Clare Klein both had four points each.  Alcester-Hudson was led by Kendra Jensen with 26 points.

The Cardinals (6-8) will host the Lake Preston Divers on Friday, January 25th as part of a girls and boys double-header.  Both games can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Girls Cruise to Fifth Win

DRSMvsBal_GBB_1-21-19A huge first quarter set the tone for a big win for the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls on Monday, January 21st.  The Cardinals outscored the Baltic Bulldogs in every quarter of the game on their way to a 56-32 win at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.

St Mary brought the hammer early in the game.  The Cardinals got out to a 19-point lead late in the first quarter, and that was all they needed the rest of the game.  St Mary led 20-3 after the first quarter of play.  Baltic did got a little run going in the second quarter and cut the lead to 10 points at 25-15 with 2:46 to play in the first half, but St Mary closed out the quarter on an 11-3 run to take a 36-18 lead into halftime.  The Cardinal defense continued to cause problems for the Bulldogs in the second half.  Baltic was held to just 14 second half points while St Mary scored 20 points.

Nine different players scored in the game for St Mary.  Ella Heinitz finished with 16 points, nine steals, five rebounds, and four assists.  Ella Griffin had 11 points, eight rebounds, and four steals.  Maddie Schwebach tallied nine points and four rebounds.  Clare Klein added six points.  Baltic was led by Berklee Erickson with nine points.

The Cardinals (5-8) will travel to Alcester to play the Alcester-Hudson Cubs on Thursday, January 24th.
