Cardinal Boys End Regular Season in Chester

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals ended their regular season at Chester against the Chester Area Flyers on Monday, February 20th.  The Flyers defeated the Cardinals 81-36.

The Flyers led from start to finish in the game.  Chester Area held an 18-4 lead after the first quarter and grew it to 36-14 by halftime.  The teams combined for 37 points in the third quarter, but Chester Area pushed their lead to 58-29 by the quarter break.

St Mary finished the game shooting 34% (14-41) from the field, 39% (5-13) from three-point area, and 3-4 from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals had 17 team rebounds, five assists, and five steals.  Chester Area finished 59% (33-56) from the field in the game.

Connor Libis had 19 points to lead all scorers in the game.  Austin Welbig had seven points and three assists.  Max Herber tossed in five points for the Cardinals.

St Mary ends the regular season with a record of 8-12.  The Cardinals will begin post-season play in the opening round of the District 7B tournament on Monday, February 27th.

Cardinal Boys Fall to Hot Shooting Baltic on Senior Night

DRSMvsBaltic_BBB_2-17-17The Baltic Bulldogs shot 63% from the field and from the three-point line in the second half on their way to a 76-50 win over the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals on Friday, February 17th.  The game was senior night for four Cardinal seniors – Austin Welbig, Garret Frost, Dalton Houska, and Zach Geraets.

The first quarter was back and forth.  St Mary started the game on a 5-0 run, but the Bulldogs answered with a 6-0 run to take a 6-5 lead.  The two teams traded baskets the remainder of the quarter, and Baltic led 13-11 at the first break.  The Bulldogs outscored St Mary 19-8 in the second quarter and led 32-19 at halftime.  The Cardinals were able to get the lead down to nine points with 4:00 to go in the third quarter at 39-30, but the Bulldogs closed out the third quarter on a 16-5 run to lead 55-35.  Baltic then outscored the Cardinals 21-15 in the final quarter.

St Mary finished the game shooting 28% (17-61) from the field, 30% (8-27) from three-point area, and 89% (8-9) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals also had 28 total team rebounds, eight assists, and five steals.

Two players finished in double figures for St Mary.  Connor Libis had 16 points and two assists.  Luke Brown had 11 points.  Austin Welbig had eight points and four rebounds.  Zach Geraets led the team with six rebounds.  Jon Wilhelmsen had 30 points for Baltic.  Brock Aaker had 16 points and 14 rebounds, and Ethan Roggow had 10 points.

St Mary (8-11) will finish the regular season on Monday, February 20th, at Chester Area.

Cardinal Boys Can’t Solve Colman-Egan

DRSM LogoThe Colman-Egan Hawks outscored Dell Rapids St Mary by 12 points in the third quarter to fuel a 74-54 win over the Cardinals on Monday, February 13th, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.

Colman-Egan took the lead in the first quarter and led 19-12 at the first break.  The Cardinals hung with the Hawks in the second quarter and trailed Colman-Egan 35-27 at halftime.  But Colman-Egan outscored St Mary 26-14 in the third quarter and took a 61-41 lead into the fourth quarter on their way to the victory.

St Mary shot 47% (18-38) from the field, 47% (8-17) from three-point area, and 67% (10-15) from the free-throw line in the game.  The Cardinals also had 23 total rebounds, 12 assists, but turned the ball over 20 times in the game.

Two players finished in double figures for St Mary.  Connor Libis had 20 points, while Luke Brown finished with 18 points.  Weston Geraets added eight points, and Logan Gaspar had four points.  Austin Welbig led the team with seven assists in the game.  Logan Gaspar, Libis, Brown, and Geraets all had three rebounds each.

St Mary (8-10) will have their final regular season home game on Friday, February 17th.  The Cardinals will host the Baltic Bulldogs.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Boys Come up Short in Elkton

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals fell to the Elkton-Lake Benton Elks 63-42 on Thursday , February 9th, in Elkton.  The loss drops the Cardinals to 8-9 on the season.

The Cardinals got into a hole in the first quarter as the Elks were able to grab a 13-4 lead by the end of the first quarter.  St Mary was able to cut into the lead by halftime, but the Elks still lead 34-26 at the half.  The Elks then outscored St Mary 29-16 in the final two quarters for the win.

St Mary shot 41% (17-42) in the game, 28% (5-18) from three-point area, and were 3-3 from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals only had 20 team rebounds in the game, seven assists, and turned the ball over 17 times.

Connor Libis led the team in scoring with 15 points and also had three assists.  Zach Geraets had six points, and Luke Brown finished with five points.  Garret Frost led the team with four rebounds in the game.

St Mary will host Colman-Egan on Monday, February 13th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Boys Even Record with Win

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals evened their record with a road win against the Centerville Tornadoes by a score of 59-44 on Tuesday, February 7th.  Four players scored in double figures for the Cardinals in the win.

St Mary trailed by a point at the end of the first quarter at 13-12, but the Cardinals outscores Centerville 36-19 in the next two quarters.  St Mary led 29-22 at halftime, and then pushed their lead to 48-32 at the end of the third quarter.

The Cardinals shot 33% (21-64) from the field, 19% (5-26) from three-point area, and 57% (12-21) from the free-throw line.  St Mary also had a total of 43 team rebounds, 14 assists, and 17 steals.

Zach Geraets had 14 points and seven rebounds to lead the Cardinals.  Garret Frost had 11 points, four rebound, and two assists.  Connor Libis had 11 points and two assists.  Weston Geraets finished with 10 points, four rebounds, and four steals.

St Mary (8-8) travel to Elkton to play the Elkton-Lake Benton Elks on Thursday, February 9th.

Cardinal Boys Drop Close Game in Arlington

DRSM LogoWith two players out sick, the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals nearly pulled off the victory in Arlington on Thursday, February 2nd.  Arlington held on for a 40-35 win over St Mary.

St Mary  held Arlington to just two points in the first quarter and had a 5-2 lead at the first quarter break.  However, Arlington found its offense in the second quarter scoring 19 points while holding St Mary to just 10.  Arlington took the lead into halftime at 21-15.  St Mary was able to get the lead down just one point by the end of the third quarter and trailed 28-27, but Arlington outscored St Mary 12-8 in the final quarter for the win.

Luke Brown led a balanced scoring attack for St Mary.  Brown finished the game with nine points and four rebounds.  Zach Geraets added eight points along with seven rebounds and two steals.  Max Herber had seven points, and Weston Geraets had six points.  Logan Gaspar finished with nine rebounds in the game, and Garret Frost had eight rebounds.

St Mary finished the game shooting 29% (13-45) from the field, 30% (6-20) from three-point area, and 50% (3-6) from the free-throw line.  St Mary had a total of 34 rebounds, 10 assists, and eight steals.

St Mary (7-8) will travel to Centerville on Tuesday, February 7th.

Cardinal Boys Fall to Canistota

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals fell to the Canistota Hawks on Friday, January 27th, by a score of 71-35 at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.  Canistota led from start to finish in the game, but only led by four points at the end of the first quarter at 20-16.  The Hawks, however, outscored St Mary 21-8 in the second quarter for a 41-24 halftime lead.  Canistota also outscored the Cardinals 30-11 in the second half.

St Mary finished the game shooting 29% (12-41) from the field, 19% (3-16) from three point-area, and 67% (8-12) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals had 24 team rebounds, and turned the ball over 23 times.

Two players finished in double figures for St Mary.  Luke Brown finished with 11 points along with two rebounds and two steals.  Connor Libis added 10 points and three rebounds.  Jason Cook and Logan Gaspar both had four points in the game.

St Mary (7-7) will travel to Arlington on Thursday, February 2nd, to play the Cardinals.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Boys Take Fifth at DVC Tourney

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals won the consolation championship and placed fifth after a 59-52 win over the Deubrook Area Dolphins at the Dakota Valley Conference tournament in Colman on Saturday, January 21st.  The Cardinals finished with two wins at the tournament.

Deubrook held an eight point lead late in the first quarter, but the Cardinals were able to pull within a point at 16-15 at the break.  St Mary then outscored the Dolphins 10-7 in the second quarter for a 25-23 halftime lead.  The Cardinals extended the lead to five points by the end of the third quarter at 38-33, and then St Mary outscored Deubrook 21-19 in the final quarter for the win.

The Cardinals finished the game shooting 20-45 (44%) from the field, 6-13 (46%) from the three-point area, and 13-21 (62%) from the free-throw line.  St Mary also had 35 team rebounds and only turned the ball over eight times.

Luke Brown and Connor Libis both finished with 20 points in the game.  Brown scored 14 straight for the Cardinals in the fourth quarter.  Libis finished with four assists, and Brown had three rebounds.  Zach Geraets had six points and five rebounds.  Garret Frost also had six points along with three rebounds.  Logan Gaspar led the team with seven rebounds.

St Mary (7-6) will host Canistota on Friday, January 27th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Boys Beat Estelline for Third Time

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals beat the Estelline Redmen for the third time this season.  The Cardinals won 63-15 at the Dakota Valley Conference tournament in Colman on Friday, January 20th.

The Cardinal defense held Estelline to single-digit scoring in each of the quarters.  St Mary out scored 24-3 in the first quarter and just kept rolling the remainder of the game.  The Cardinals led 38-11 at halftime and 44-13 at the end of the third quarter.

St Mary shot 25-57 (44%) from the field, 9-22 (41%) from three-point area, and 5-8 (63%) from the free throw line.  The Cardinals had 40 team rebounds, 12 assists, 16 steals, and four 22 Estelline turnovers in the game.

The Cardinal offense had a very balanced scoring attack.  Austin Welbig had 12 points and four rebounds.  Luke Brown also finished with 12 points along with five rebounds and five steals.  Connor Libis added 11 points and six assists.  Jason Cook and Max Herber both finished with eight points each.  Garret Frost and Herber each had six rebounds.

St Mary (6-6) will face Deubrook Area in the consolation championship of the DVC Tournament at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 21st, in Colman.

ORR Beats Cardinal Boys in DVC Opener

DRSM LogoThe Oldham-Ramona/Rutland Raiders defeated the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals in the opening round of the Dakota Valley Conference Tournament on Tuesday, January 17th, in Colman.  The Raiders beat St Mary 61-35.

St Mary was only able to score 10 points total in the first half as the Raiders held a 29-10 lead at halftime.  The lead extended to 51-22 by the end of the third quarter.  St Mary was able to outscore the Raiders 13-10 in the final quarter.

The Cardinals shot 14-48 (29%) from the field, 3-13 (23%) from three-point area, and 4-7 (57%) from the free-throw line.  The team had a total of 28 rebounds, just three assists, and turned the ball over 16 times.  The Raiders finished 25-53 (47%) from the field in the game.

Connor Libis led the team in scoring with 11 points.  Luke Brown finished with eight points, and Logan Gaspar added six points.  Garret Frost and Max Herber led the team with five rebounds each, while Brown had four rebounds.  Gaspar also had four blocked shots, and Austin Welbig finished with three assists.

St Mary (5-6) will play Estelline for the third time this year in the consolation round of the DVC Tournament.  Tip-off is at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, January 20th, at Colman.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.
