Deubrook Snaps Quarrier Girls Winning Streak

January 19, 2015 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier girls basketball team had their three-game winning streak broken by the Deubrook Dolphins on Saturday, January 17th.  Deubrook defeated Dell Rapids 60-46 at the Hanson Classic in Mitchell.

Head coach Jeff Dvorak said, “This game was very perplexing.  We shot 46% from the field, held their leading scorer to three points, out-rebounded them, and yet were solidly beaten.”

Deubrook held a 14-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.  They pushed that lead to nine by halftime at 30-21.  Each team scored 12 points in the third quarter, and Deubrook kept their nine point lead at the end of the third quarter at 42-33.  The Dolphins then outscored Dell Rapids 18-13 in the final quarter.

The Quarrers finished 18-39 from the field and shot 60% (3-5) from the free-throw line.  Dell Rapids out-rebounded the Dolphins 25-23, however, the Quarriers turned the ball over 27 times in the game.

Averi Pankonen had 17 points.  Emma Paul added seven points and three rebounds.  Brittney Siemonsma had four points and seven rebounds.

“We seemed very slow moving the ball, cutting and defending…just lacked energy.  We could say that our late return/game in Beresford last night left us out of gas, but we need to find a little more ‘fight’, guts and leadership when we play in a classic like this regardless of playing a late game the night before.  This was certainly a learning opportunity for us,” said Dvorak.

The Quarriers fall to 6-4 on the year.  Dell Rapids will host West Central on Tuesday, January 20th.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Girls Basketball Loses First Dak-12 Game

January 4, 2015 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

DRHSvsEPJ_GBB_1-3-15The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls basketball team lost their first Dak-12 Conference game of the year.  The Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies beat the Quarriers 43-41 on Saturday, December 3rd, in Dell Rapids.

The Huskies jumped out to an early 3-0 lead to start the game, but Dell Rapids went on a 9-0 run to take a 9-3 lead with 4:00 left to go in the first quarter.  Elk Point-Jefferson battled back, outscoring Dell Rapids 7-2 the rest of the quarter, but it was Dell Rapids who held an 11-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.  The Quarriers were able to push their lead to six points by the midway point of the second quarter, only to see the Huskies go on a 9-1 run to end the quarter and take a 23-21 lead into halftime.

Elk Point-Jefferson held the lead throughout the third quarter, leading by as many as six points at 31-25 with 1:40 left in the third quarter.  Dell Rapids scored the final three points and cut the lead in half at 31-28 at the end of the third quarter.  The Huskies extended their lead to five points to 33-28 with 6:55 to go in the game, but Dell Rapids regained the lead at 34-33 after a 6-0 run with 5:09 to go.  Elk Point-Jefferson answered right back with an 8-0 to go ahead 41-34 with 3:40 to go.  The Quarriers chipped away at the lead the rest of the game, only to have the game-tying shot at the final buzzer fall away no good.  Elk Point-Jefferson was able to hang on for the win.

Head coach Jeff Dvorak said, “First off, although she didn’t show up in the stats, Sarah Haak played a great defensive game on one of the best players in our conference – I was very proud of her effort. When you play games like this, it’s hard to win if you have one or two areas that were poor, and we actually had three. Despite that we had a good chance to win because of our solid defense and rebounding.”

Dell Rapids finished the game shooting just 31% (14-45) from the field.  They shot 48% (10-21) from the free-throw line and also committed 20 turnovers.  Dell Rapids did have a 39-30 rebounding edge over the Huskies.
