The Dell Rapids Quarrier football team scored 15 unanswered points in the second half to help them to a 15-14 come-from-behind win over the Madison Bulldogs to open the season on Friday, August 28th.
The Quarriers had a couple of drives into the red zone that ended with no points in the first half. Madison scored on a three-yard run early in the second quarter to take a 7-0 lead. The Bulldogs added another score on a five-yard pass with 1:13 to play in the half. Another made extra point gave Madison a 14-0 lead going into halftime.
Jace Brende put the Quarriers on the board with a 65-yard touchdown run on fourth down with 7:52 to play in the third quarter. Connor Jones made the extra point to cut the lead in half, 14-7. The score remained 14-7 going into the fourth quarter. After some big stops by the defense, the Dell Rapids offense got back to work with 8:23 to play in the game.
The Quarriers marched down the field 80 yards, and Hayden Hansen scored on a 21-yard run with 3:11 to play. Dell Rapids decided to go for two points. Brende, with the help of the offensive line, pushed his way into the end zone for the conversion giving the Quarriers a 15-14 lead. The defense came up with one more big stop in the second half forcing a turnover on downs to secure the win.
Dell Rapids had 327 yards of total offense, 181 rushing yards and 146 passing yards. Madison finished with 240 yards of offense, 59 rushing yards and 181 passing yards. Hansen was 7-13 passing for 146 yards. Cooper Cuny had three catches for 77 yards. Camden Jones also had three catches for 56 yards. Brende had 11 carries for 103 yards and a touchdown. Hansen had 10 carries for 31 yards and a touchdown.
Brende also had nine tackles with a sack. Jackson Peppel had 7.5 tackles. Breck Evans finished with five tackles. Andrew Schoeberl had four tackles. Carson Vanderwerf added three tackles with a sack.
