A big third quarter run helped the Vermillion Tanagers to a win over the Dell Rapids Quarrier girls on Thursday, January 30th. The Tanagers won by a score of 60-50.
Dell Rapids played strong defense in the opening half. They had a lead for all of the first two quarters. The Quarriers led 13-9 at the end of the first quarter. Both teams scored eight points in the second, and Dell Rapids led 21-17 going into halftime.
The Quarriers hung on to a 25-23 lead about midway through the third quarter. Vermillion then finished the quarter on a 20-7 run for a 43-32 lead going into the fourth quarter. Dell Rapids outscored the Tanagers 18-17 in the fourth quarter, but Vermillion held for the win.
Dell Rapids shot 43% (16-37) from the field overall, 42% (5-12) on three-point shots, and 87% (13-15) from the free-throw line. Vermillion shot 36% (21-58) overall, 35% (7-20) on three-point attempts, and 65% (11-17) from the free-throw line.
Three players finished in double figures for Dell Rapids. Rorie Thoreson had 18 points, two rebounds, and two assists. Jersi Schultz finished with 14 points, four rebounds, and two assists. Elin Schoenhard added 10 points, eight rebounds, and two assists. Clara Justice had six points and seven rebounds. Elly Olson ended with two points, four rebounds, six assists, and four steals.
