The Dell Rapids Quarrier football team was stunned by the Vermillion Tanagers at home on Friday, October 2nd. The Tanagers upset the #5 Quarriers 17-7.
After a nearly scoreless first half, the Tanagers put three points on the board as time expired in the second quarter on a 29-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead into halftime.
Dell Rapids took the lead with 8:31 to go in the third quarter on a 28-yard touchdown pass from Hayden Hansen to Jackson Peppel. Connor Jones made the extra point to give the Quarriers a 7-3 lead. Vermillion, however, regained the lead in a very short time. The Tanagers scored on a 63-yard touchdown pass with 6:54 to play in the third. The extra point put Vermillion back on top 10-7. They would add to the lead on a six-yard touchdown pass with 0:47 to go in the quarter to make the score 17-7.
Neither team would score in the fourth quarter.
Dell Rapids finished the game with 182 yards of total offense, 79 passing yards and 103 rushing yards. Vermillion had 226 yards of offense, 184 passing yards and 42 rushing yards.
Hansen was 6-11 passing for 79 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Peppel had three catches for 49 yards and a touchdown. Cooper Cuny had two catches for 19 yards. Camden Jones had a catch for 11 yards. Hansen also had eight carries for 45 yards. Jace Brende added 10 carries for 29 yards. Peppel had seven rushes for 22 yards.
Brende had nine tackles and an interception. Cuny had 5.5 tackles. Andrew Schoeberl had 4.5 tackles. Carson Vanderwerf finished with three tackles and a sack.
