The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls basketball team earned a big win over the #10 ranked Lakota Tech Tatanka at the Roundball Classic in Volga on Saturday, January 31st. The Quarriers earned a 63-60 win in overtime to improve to 10-5 on the year.
The Tatanka took the early lead in the first quarter and led 13-10 at the quarter break. Dell Rapids rallied in the second quarter and ended the first half with a 29-28 lead. The Quarriers increased their lead to 34-28 with 6:00 to play in the third quarter. Lakota Tech would go on a run and retook the lead 46-44 going into the fourth quarter.
Each team would have a lead in the fourth quarter, but it was Lakota Tech who held a 55-53 lead with under :20 to go in the game. Rorie Thoreson made a game-tying basket from near the free-throw line to tie the game 55-55 and send it into overtime. Lakota Tech was again in the lead late in the overtime period, 60-59, with :14 to play. Thoreson was fouled on a drive with :07 to play. She calmly made both free throws to put Dell Rapids ahead 61-60. Elin Schoenhard was found after intercepting the inbounds pass. She made two more free throws to make the score 63-60.
Dell Rapids shot 45% (23-51) overall in the game, 33% (3-9) from three-point area, and 67% (14-21) from the free-throw line. Lakota Tech shot 35% (25-72) overall from the field, 21% (4-19) on three-point attempts, and 33% (6-18) from the free-throw line.
Thoreson finished with 18 points, four rebounds, and four assists. Jersi Schultz had 13 points and 15 rebounds. Schoenhard added 12 points and nine rebounds. Josie Price ended with nine points and three rebounds. Claire Witte had seven points, three rebounds, and three assists.
