The Dell Rapids Quarriers traveled to Madison to face the Bulldogs in a battle of top-five teams in Class 11A football on Friday, September 5th. The two teams were evenly matched, and the scoreboard proved it. Madison held on for a 21-20 victory.
The Quarriers scored the first two touchdowns of the game. Devin Lodmell scored on an eight-yard run with 5:30 to play in the first quarter. Ryan Stubbe made the two-point conversion for an early 8-0 lead.
They would add to the lead in the second quarter. Stubbe had a 14-yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion failed, but Dell Rapids led 14-0 with 8:11 to go in the first half. Madison scored in the final minute of the second on a 12-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was good, and Dell Rapids led 14-7 going into halftime.
The Bulldogs scored early in the third quarter. With 10:00 to play in the quarter, they connected on a 29-yard touchdown pass. A made extra point tied the game 14-14. Madison would take the lead in the fourth quarter.
With 9:45 to go in the game, a six-yard touchdown run put the Bulldogs in front. The made extra point gave the Bulldogs a 21-14 advantage. Dell Rapids found the end zone again just over two minutes later. Drake Eastman had a one-yard quarterback sneak for a touchdown with 7:11 to play. The two-point conversion failed, and Dell Rapids trailed 21-20. Unfortunately for Dell Rapids, Madison ran out most of the clock. The Quarriers got the ball back, but with just :39 to play in the game and on their own 10-yard line. They were unable to drive down the field.
Dell Rapids finished with 232 yards of offense, 206 rushing yards and 26 passing yards. Madison had 317 yards of offense, 120 rushing yards and 197 passing yards. Lodmell had 10 carries for 89 yards and a touchdown. Stubbe had 12 carries for 49 yards and a touchdown. Eastman was 4-8 passing for 26 yards. Jackson Peppel, Kenny Swanson, Connor Jones, and Lodmell all had one catch each. Eastman finished with six tackles, and Swanson had 4.5 tackles.
