A second half rally by the Dell Rapids Quarriers fell short in Flandreau as the Fliers held for a 48-43 win on Thursday, January 2nd.
Flandreau started the game with an early 6-2 lead. The Fliers were still in front 8-5 with 3:45 to play in the quarter. Dell Rapids finished the quarter on an 8-0 for a 13-8 lead. The Quarriers scored the first three points of the second quarter to extend their lead to 16-8. Flandreau’s offense then got rolling. The Fliers outscored Dell Rapids 23-5 the rest of the quarter for a 31-21 halftime lead.
The Fliers pushed their lead to 37-23 with 3:30 to go in the third quarter. That’s when the Quarriers started their rally. Mya DeStigter provided a spark with three made three-point shots to help Dell Rapids cut the lead down to 41-36 by the end of the third quarter. Flandreau pushed the lead back to eight points, 46-38, with out three minutes to play. Rorie Thoreson made a three-point shot with just under a minute to go to pull the Quarriers within three points, 46-43. Dell Rapids got a steal on defense to get the ball back with :27 remaining. Flandreau, however, would get the ball right back on a steal with :20 which led to a layup with :12 to go to secure the win.
Dell Rapids shot 32% (13-41) overall in the game, 32% (7-22) on three-point shots, and 67% (10-15) from the free-throw line. Flandreau shot 38% (18-48) overall, 1-8 on their three-point attempts, and 50% (11-22) from the free-throw line.
Thoreson finished with 18 points and three assists. DeStigter added nine points and four rebounds. Jersi Schultz had seven points, eight rebounds, and six blocked shots. Elin Schoenhard ended with four points and two rebounds. Elly Olson had six rebounds and five assists.
