Strong Defense Leads Panthers in Win over Quarrier Girls

The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls played their final regular season game of the year on Friday, February 9th at Dakota Valley High School.  The Panthers used a lot of pressure defense to lead them to a 79-44 victory.

Dell Rapids trailed by just six points, 21-15, with 1:45 to play in the opening quarter.  Dakota Valley finished the quarter with a 25-16 lead.  They would outscore Dell Rapids 27-7 in the second quarter aided by 12 defensive steals.  The Panthers led 52-23 at halftime.  The lead continued to grow in the second half as Dakota Valley outscored Dell Rapids 27-21 in the final two quarters.

The Quarriers shot 39% (16-41) from the field overall, 39% (7-18) from three-point area, and 5-7 from the free-throw line.  Dakota Valley finished the game shooting 55% (35-64) overall, 14% (2-14) on three-point shots, and 7-8 from the free-throw line.  The defense was they key for the Panthers.  They forced 27 Quarrier turnovers, 23 of those coming on steals.

Rorie Thoreson had 11 points, two rebounds, four assists, and three steals.  Kassidee Stykel also had 11 points.  Shelby Welbig finished with six points and five rebounds.  Jersi Schultz also had six points.  Mya DeStigter, Taylor Schmidt, and Josie Price all had three points each.
