Defensive Pressure Wears Down Quarrier Girls

For two quarters the Dell Rapids Quarriers went toe-to-toe with the Garretson Blue Dragons on Tuesday, December 20th.  The Quarriers had a halftime lead, but the defensive pressure by Garretson wore down Dell Rapids in the second half, and Garretson took the win 60-45.

Garretson had an early 6-4 lead, but Dell Rapids went on a 9-1 run to lead 13-7 with 1:15 to play in the opening quarter.  The Blue Dragons ended the quarter on a 6-0 run to tie the game 13-13.  That run continued into the second quarter as Garretson built a 20-15 lead with 5:00 in the half.  Dell Rapids, however, outscored Garretson 14-7 to lead 29-27 at halftime.

Coming out of halftime, Garretson went on a 10-0 run and outscored Dell Rapids 21-8 in the third quarter to lead 48-37.  The third quarter was the big difference in the game.  The Blue Dragons were able to cruise through the fourth quarter for the win.

Dell Rapids shot 38% (16-42) from the field, 30% (3-10) on three-point shots, and 83% (10-12) from the free-throw line.  Garretson finished the game shooting 40% (23-57) overall, 25% (4-16) from three-point area, and 71% (10-14) from the free-throw line.  The key stat of the game was turnovers.  The Quarriers turned the ball over 30 times, 21 of those coming on Garretson steals.

Liz Price had 14 points and eight rebounds.  Jenna Miller finished with 13 points, five rebounds, and three assists.  Claire Wynja added seven points, four rebounds, and two steals.  Shelby Welbig had six points, and Elly Olson had five points and three rebounds.

JV Results

After a long wait brought on by Mother Nature, the Dell Rapids Quarriers junior varsity finally took to the court for their first game of the season Tuesday night, traveling to Garretson to battle the Blue Dragons.  In a low scoring contest, the Quarriers edged Garretson, 16-15, in overtime.  First game jitters were apparent.  Although the young Quarriers struggled putting points on the board, they used stifling defensive pressure to disrupt Garretson’s offense and force them into several turnovers.

Mya DeStigter    finished with eight points, three steals, and three rebounds.  Taylor Schmidt had four points and six rebounds.  Peyton Hohn added two points and five rebounds.  Keilah Kremer had two points and five rebounds, and Reagan Van Zee had three steals.
