West Central Gold 14U Gets Big Win over Tea Navy 14U

Coming off of a second place finish at the I-29 League Tournament, West Central Gold 14U scored a big win over Tea Nave 14U 15-3 in five innings on Wednesday, June 9th.

The game was close through four innings of play.  Keaton Vessells had an RBI double in the top of the first inning for an early 1-0 West Central lead.  West Central then scored three times in the top of third.  Jesse Jost scored on a wild pitch, Cain Grocott had an RBI sacrifice pop out, and Vessells scored on an error to push the lead to 4-0.  Tea responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the third inning to make the score 4-3.  Neither team scored in the fourth inning.

Then West Central’s offense took advantage of nine walks in the top of the fifth inning.  Three timely hits combined with the nine walks led to 11 runs in the inning to blow the game open and send West Central home with the win.

Caden Alfson had a triple with three RBIs in the fifth inning.  Vessells finished with a double and an RBI.  Carter Evens had a hit with two RBIs.  Jack Sebert, Grocott, Nick Lorang, and Evan Jaton all had a hit and an RBI.  Jost and Jacob Kono also had an RBI.  Jost pitched 2 1/3 innings allowing one earned run on two hits with two walks and six strikeouts.  Grocott pitched 1 2/3 innings allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts.  Alfson pitched a perfect fifth inning striking out all three batters.

West Central Royal 14U Falls to Dell Rapids in Second Straight Game

Just days after facing Dell Rapids 14U in the 3rd/4th place game of the I-29 League Tournament in Flandreau, West Central Royal 14U traveled to Dell Rapids on Wednesday, June 9th.  Dell Rapids again was victorious, but this time by a score of 18-3 in four innings.

Cooper Mulder helped get West Central on the board first with an RBI single in the top of the first inning.  West Central held Dell Rapids scoreless in their half of the first inning, but Dell Rapids scored four times in the bottom of the second.

Lando Whiting started the top of the third with a lead-off single.  Landon Holewa followed with an RBI triple to cut the lead to 4-2.  Holewa later scored on a passed ball to pull West Central within a run, 4-3.  That was as close as they would get though.  Dell Rapids scored five times in the bottom of the third inning, and then nine more times in the bottom of the fourth inning to get the win.

Holewa finished with two hits, including a triple, and an RBI.  Mulder had a single and RBI.  Whiting also had a single in the game.  CJ DenBoer started the game on the mound pitching 1 2/3 innings allowing four runs, one earned, on two hits with a walk.  Anthony Lanham pitched an inning allowing five runs, none of them earned, on three hits and a walk along with striking out one batter.  Ty Sichmeller pitched 1/3 of an inning allowing seven runs on a hit.  Gavin DeHaven also pitched 1/3 of an inning allowing two runs.

West Central Girls Golf Places Eighth

The final high school event of the 2020-2021 year has now come to an end.  The West Central Trojan girls golf team played their final rounds of the season at the 2021 South Dakota State A Golf Tournament at Spearfish Canyon Country Club Monday, June 7th, and Tuesday, June 8th.

West Central finished eighth in the team standings with a two-day total score of 832.

Jordyn Driscoll tied for 12th with an overall total of 182 (92, 90 ).  Kaylee Olson tied for 46th with a total of 215 (104, 111).  Alaina Murphy finished 50th with a two-day total of 217 (107, 110).  Dakotah Larson tied for 51st with a total of 218 (104, 114).  Emma Grocott finished her tournament with a total of 245 (115, 130), placing 73rd.

West Central Defeats Tri-Valley in 16U Action

The West Central and Tri-Valley 16U teams did battle in Humboldt on Monday, June 7th.  West Central scored in every inning and got the 14-1 win in five-innings.

Mason Berens scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the first to give West Central a 1-0 lead.  Duece Sherard had a two run single in the bottom of the second, and West Central increased the lead to 3-0.

Cole Focken got Tri-Valley on the board with an RBI single in the top of the third inning to cut the lead to 3-1.  West Central scored six times in the bottom of the inning.  Braydon Odegaard scored on an error, Gage Nelson drew a bases loaded walk, Derek Renken had an RBI single, Nelson then scored on a wild pitch, and Justin Zirpel hit a sacrifice fly giving West Central a 9-1 lead.

West Central added five more runs in the bottom of the fourth.  Camden Mc Donald had a sacrifice fly, Renken had an RBI single, Sherard had an RBI double, and Zirpel had a two-run single.

Focken finished with a hit and an RBI for Tri-Valley.  Tanner Van Asselt and Everett Althoff also had hits in the game.  Beau Keith pitched two innings giving up seven runs, six earned, on four hits with five walks and five strikeouts.  Holden Rise pitched 1 1/3 innings allowing five runs, four earned, on two hits with three walks.  Mason Hendrixson pitched 2/3 of an inning allowing two earned runs on three hits.

Sherard had two hits, one double, and three RBIs.  Renken had two hits and two RBIs.  Dylan Stromer had two hits.  Zirpel had one hit and three RBIs.  Nelson had a hit and RBI.  Cade Vander Woude had a hit, and Mc Donald had an RBI.  Andrew Zimmer pitched three innings allowing a run, which was unearned, on a hit with two walks and five strikeouts.  Renken pitched two innings allowing two hits and struck out one.

Hartford Sparx 18U Softball 4-2 in June

The Hartford Sparx 18U softball team has gone 4-2 in their six games in June so far and has an overall record of 14-5-1 on the season.

The Sparx played two games at Aspen Park in Brandon on Saturday, June 5th.  They defeated SD Midwest Speed by a score of 5-1.  They then defeated the Luverne Blaze 12-1.  They picked up two more wins on Sunday, June 6th.  They defeated the Luverne Blaze Fastpitch team 8-4, and then finished the weekend with another win over SD Midwest Speed 8-0.

On Tuesday, June 8th, the Sparx had a double-header against the Yankton Fury Red team in Yankton.

In the first game, Yankton scored 10 times in the second inning and then held stopped a last inning rally to get a 10-7 win over West Central.

Grace Harden and Jenna Lueth both had three hits and an RBI in the game.  McKenna Sichmeller had two hits, including a double.  Brooke Opitz had a triple and two RBIs.  Caitlyn Maa had a triple and an RBI.  Olivia Brown also had a hit and an RBI.  Taylor Kunzweiler pitched four innings allowing 10 runs, but only two earned, on eight hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

In the second game, the two teams were tied 1-1 heading into the bottom of the third inning.  Yankton scored three times, and then added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning for a 5-1 victory.

Lueth had a hit and an RBI.  Addy Kramer, Riley Morrison, and Brown all had hits.  Harden pitched five innings allowing five runs, four earned, on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

West Central Gold 14U Takes Second at I-29 Tournament

The West Central Gold 14U teener team played four games at the I-29 League Tournament in Flandreau, finishing 3-1 and placing second.

West Central had two games on Friday, June 4th.  In their opening game, they defeated Tea White 13-3.  West Central scored two runs in the bottom of the second, but Tea plated three in the top of the third.  West Central responded with seven in the third, and four more in the fourth to win on the 10-run rule.

Caden Alfson had two home runs and two RBIs.  Carter Evans had two hits and two RBIs.  Jacob Kono had two hits, one double, and two RBIs.  Keaton Vessells had two hits, including a home run, and an RBI.  Jack Sebert had a double and a RBI.  Cain Grocott and Nick Lorang both had two hits.  Sebert pitched 2 2/3 innings giving up two runs, both unearned, on one hit, one walk, and two strikeouts.  Kono pitched 1 1/3 innings allowing an earned run on a hit and a strikeout.

In the second game of the day, West Central defeated Castlewood 25-3 in three innings.  They held Castlewood to just three hits.  West Central scored six in the first, 12 in the second, and seven more in the third.

Vessells had a grand slam home run as one of his three hits and had four RBIs.  Alfson had two hits, including a home run and a double, with four RBIs.  Lorang had three hits and an RBI.  Sebert had a hit with two RBIs.  Grocott had a double and two RBIs.  Seth Lind had a hit and three RBIs.  Carter Evans and Zach Lorang each had a hit.  Kono had three RBIs, and Evan Jaton had an RBI.  Vessells pitched one inning allowing two runs, one earned, on one hit with three strikeouts.  N. Lorang pitched two innings allowing an unearned run on one walk and three strikeouts.

West Central played one game on Saturday, June 5th.  Alfson pitched a no-hitter as West Central defeated Hills-Beaver Creek Red 12-0 to send them to the championship game.

Grocott had three hits, one double, with two RBIs.  Alfson had two hits, one of those a triple, with two RBIs.  Sebert also had a hit.  Alfson pitched four innings with nine strikeouts and three walks.

In the championship game on Sunday, June 6th, West Central ran into a tough Madison Gold team.  Madison scored five runs in the top of the first inning and cruised from their as they defeated West Central 20-2 in six innings.

Alfson had a double with two RBIs.  N. Lorang had the other hit.  Vessells pitched one inning allowing five runs, none of them earned, on two hits with three walks and two strikeouts.  Sebert pitched three innings allowing five runs, two earned, on six hits with two walks.  Grocott pitched 1 2/3 innings allowing nine runs, one earned, on no hits with eight walks and a strikeout.  Lind pitched the final 1/3 of an inning allowing an earned run on a hit and three walks.

West Central Royal 14U Places 3rd at I29 Tourney

The West Central Royal 14U teener team placed third after splitting a couple of games in Flandreau at the I-29 League Tournament on Saturday, June 5th and Sunday, June 6th.

West Central’s first game was a close 4-2 victory over Hamlin on Saturday.  Cooper Mulder got West Central on the board in the first inning after scoring on a passed ball.  West Central added three more in the bottom of the third.  Gavin DeHaven, Mulder, and Landen Holewa all scored on Hamlin errors to give West Central a 4-0 lead.  Hamlin scored two in the top of the fourth, but West Central hung on for the win.

Holewa had a double, and Mulder had the other hit for West Central.  Anthony Lanham pitched 4 1/3 innings allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits with one walk and eight strikeouts.  Holewa pitched 2/3 of an inning and had one strikeout.

West Central faced Dell Rapids in the 3rd/4th place game on Sunday.  The two teams went back and forth, but Dell Rapids ended up with the 14-11 victory.

Dell Rapids scored four runs in the top of the first and two more in the top of the second for an early 6-0 lead.  Quincy Stephens scored on a wild pitch and Lanham scored on a passed ball to cut the lead to 6-2.  Cody Opitz stole home later in the inning, and Lando Whiting scored on an error to make the score 6-4 after the second inning.  After Dell Rapids scored one run in the top of the third, West Central scored three times in the bottom of the inning.  Stone Loof scored on a wild pitch, Stephens scored on a passed ball, and Tyler Warne had an RBI single to tie the game 7-7.

Dell Rapids regained the lead with a run in the top of the fourth inning, but West Central took the lead in the bottom of the fourth with three more runs.  Mulder drove home two with a double, and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Holewa for a 10-8 lead.  Dell Rapids, though, scored three more in the top of the fifth and three in the top of the seventh for a 14-10 lead.  Whiting brought home a run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI ground-out, but that was all West Central could get in the final inning.

Mulder had two hits, one double, with two RBIs.  Loof had two hits.  Warne had a hit and an RBI.  Whiting and Holewa both had RBIs.  Holewa pitched three innings allowing seven runs, six earned, on eight hits with four walks and six strikeouts.  Whiting pitched three inings allowing six runs, five earned, on three hits with eight walks and three strikeouts.  Stephens pitched one inning allowing one earned run on a hit and a walk.

Wood Ducks Ninth Inning Rally Sinks Gamecocks

For eight innings, the Wood Ducks and Gamecocks were locked in a pitcher’s dual on Sunday, June 6th.  The Wood Ducks were held hitless in those eight innings, and the Gamecocks only had two hits on the board.

But with the game tied 1-1 heading into the final inning, the Wood Ducks finally got their first hit of the game, a bunt single, after the lead-off hitter reached on an error.  The Gamecocks looks as though they were going to get out of the jam, getting two of the next three batters out.  With two outs and the bases loaded, the next six batters for the Wood Ducks reached safely on five hits, and all the sudden the Wood Ducks had scored eight times for a 9-1 lead.  The Gamecocks were only able to get two batters on base in the bottom of the inning.

For the Wood Ducks, Logan Larsen had a double with two RBIs.  Tyler Lundborg had a hit with three RBIs.  Drew Eldeen, Blake Svoboda, and Auedin King all had a hit with an RBI.  Austin Smith also had a hit.  Eldeen pitched the complete game allowing one run, which was unearned, on two hits with four walks and eight strikeouts.

Broc Haldeman and Drew DeMers had the hits for the Gamecocks.  Cam Quigley had an RBI.  Tyler Renken had a no-hitter going through eight innings, but finished the game allowing three runs, one earned, on one hit with three walks and seven strikeouts.  Haldeman allowed six runs, all earned, on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Gamecocks and Wood Ducks Even in Early Cornbelt Season

The 2021 Cornbelt League has gotten through four league games so far this season, and in those league games, the Hartford/Humboldt Gamecocks and Hartford/Humboldt Wood Ducks are both 2-2 in league games.

The Wood Ducks opened their league schedule on Sunday, May 16th with a 3-1 defeat to Lennox.  They rebounded on Thursday, May 20th with a 10-7 win over Madison.  Canova defeated the Wood Ducks 12-0 on Sunday, May 23rd, and then the Wood Ducks defeated Salem 12-2 on Thursday, June 3rd.

The Gamecocks opened their league season with a 4-3 win over the Dell Rapids Mudcats on Sunday, May 16th.  Salem defeated the Gamecocks 16-3 on Wednesday, May 19th.  The Gamecocks got a big win over Dell Rapids PBR 22-5 on Sunday, May 23rd, but then they lost to Flandreau 13-2 on Thursday, June 3rd.  The Gamecocks have also played five non-league games and have gone 3-2 in those games for an overall record of 5-4.

West Central Takes Second at State Baseball Tournament

West Central’s bid for a high school state baseball title ended just a little short at Sioux Falls Stadium on Tuesday, June 1st.  West Central fell to Dell Rapids, a Region 3B foe, in the championship game 9-2 taking the 2021 South Dakota High School Baseball Association runner-up spot.

West Central’s run through the state tournament started on Monday, May 31st.  They opened the tournament against Platte-Geddes/Dakota Christian/White Lake/Corsica/Stickney and advanced after an exciting 6-5 win.

West Central scored the first three runs of the game.  Zach Madsen hit an RBI single in the top of the second inning. West Central added two more runs in the top of the fifth on RBI singles by Dylan Sherrard and Loren Jacobson.  PG/DC/WL/C/S tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, but West Central added three in the top of the seventh.  Grafton Stroup had a two-run double, and Jacobson scored on a wild pitch to give West Central a 6-3 lead.  They needed all three runs as PG/DC/WL/C/S scored two times before Stroup was able to get the final out on the mound.

Ryan Healy, Jacobson, Madsen, Seth Gabbert, and Sherrard all had singles in the game.  Jacobson, Madsen, and Sherrard all had an RBI.  Stroup had a double and two RBIs, and Noah Hohn had a triple.  Gabbert pitched five innings allowing three earned runs on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts.  Stroup pitched the final two innings allowing two earned runs on three hits with one strikeout.

West Central defeated Vermillion in the semifinals on Tuesday.  West Central scored six runs over the last three innings to secure the 9-4 victory to send them to the championship game.

They had three runs in the top of the first inning and led 3-0 until Vermillion scored a run in the bottom of the fourth.  West Central added two runs in the top of the fifth, but Vermillion responded with two of their own in the bottom of the inning to make the score 5-3 after five innings.  West Central again added two runs in the top of the sixth inning for a 7-3 lead.  Vermillion picked up a run in the bottom of the sixth, but two more runs by West Central in the top of the seventh put the game out of reach.

Healy and Madsen both had two hits and an RBI in the game.  Jacobson also had two hits, including a double.  Stroup had a triple and two RBIs.  Hown had a double and an RBI.  Ben Sebert and Gabbert both had a hit.  Sherrard had a hit and three RBIs.  Braden Herr pitched 4 2/3 innings giving up three runs, two earned, on three hits with three walks and two strikeouts.  Stroup pitched 1 1/3 innings allowing one run, which was unearned, on two hits with one walk and one strikeout.  Hohn pitched the final inning allowing no runs on two hits.

West Central then faced Dell Rapids in the title game on Tuesday evening.  West Central scored two times on three hits in the top of the first inning to put the pressure on Dell Rapids early.  Hohn had an RBI single, and Adam Parsons had an RBI ground out in the inning.  West Central, however, was held to just one hit the remainder of the game as Dell Rapids scored a run in the bottom of the second, five more in the third, two in the fifth, and one in the sixth for the win.

Jacobson had two of the four hits for West Central, including a double.  Hohn had a hit and RBI, and Healy had the other hit in the game.  Hohn pitched 4 1/3 innings allowing eight runs, only three earned, on 10 hits with two walks and four strikeouts.  Jacobson pitched the final 1 2/3 innings allowing one earned run on four walks and a strikeout.

West Central finished the season with a 12-5 record and as the State B runner-up.
