Wood Ducks Drop Two on Back-to-back Days

The Humboldt/Hartford Wood Ducks dropped two games on back-to-back days on Wednesday, July 13th and Thursday, July 14th.

The Wood Ducks hosted the Dell Rapids Mudcats on Wednesday in a make-up game from earlier in July.  Dell Rapids scored three times in the top of the first inning and never trailed in a 14-4 win.  The Wood Ducks scored twice in the bottom of the first to make the score 3-2.  Dell Rapids, however, would get two more runs in the third, one in the sixth, and two in the seventh.  Humboldt/Hartford got two more runs in the bottom of the seventh for an 8-4 game, but Dell Rapids scored six times in the final two innings.

JJ Jesson had a home run, single, and two RBIs.  Austin King finished with a triple.  Ryan Healy, Presten Riddle, Josiah Stroup, and Jacob Ellens all had a single.

The Wood Ducks then took a 16-1 loss to Canova on Thursday.

West Central 14U Qualifies for State

The West Central 14U baseball team is headed to the South Dakota VFW 14U State A baseball tournament after winning the Region 4A tournament held in Parker Monday, July 11th through Wednesday, July 13th.

West Central 16, Tri-Valley White 1

In the opening game of the tournament on Monday, West Central cruised to a 16-1 over Tri-Valley.  They scored four runs in the bottom of the first, one in the second, nine in the third, and two in the fourth.  West Central pitchers held Tri-Valley to just three hits in the game.

CJ DenBoer had two hits, one a triple, and three RBIs.  Nick Lorang had two hits and an RBI.  Anthony Lanham also had two hits, one a triple.  Alex Siemonsma finished with a hit and three RBIs.  Hayes Cain had a single and two RBIs.  Jack Sebert finished with a single.  Dylan Bettcher and Taten VanOverbeke both had an RBI.

Lanham pitched two innings and allowed one hit and struck out four.  DenBoer pitched an inning and allowed a hit and two walks with two strikeouts.  Ashton Gebhard pitched one inning and allowed an earned run on a hit and two walks with a strikeout.

West Central 10, Parker 5

West Central earned a spot in the championship game after a 10-5 win over Parker on Tuesday.  Lanham had an RBI sacrifice fly, and Lorang added an RBI single in the top of the first inning to give West Central an early 2-0 lead.  They added three more in the top of the second.  Cain had an RBI double, and Lanham brought home two more with a single.

Parker cut the lead to 5-2 with two runs in the bottom of the second.  West Central, however, put the pressure on Parker with a five-run fifth inning.  Lanham scored on an error.  DenBoer scored on a wild pitch, Siemonsma had an RBI single and then scored on a wild pitch, and Cain had an RBI single.  Parker added two more runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.

Lanham had two hits and three RBIs.  Cain had two hits, one a double, and two RBIs.  Lorang finished with two hits and an RBI.  Siemonsma added a single and an RBI.  DenBoer and Jacob Kono each had a single.  Lanham pitched five innings and allowed four runs, one earned, on three hits and two walks with seven strikeouts.  Sebert pitched two innings and allowed an unearned run on three hits and had two strikeouts.

West Central 9, Madison Black 7

West Central scored early and never trailed while holding off Madison late in the game on Wednesday.  The 9-7 victory gave West Central the Region 4A title and a spot in the state tournament.

Sebert and DenBoer scored on errors in the bottom of the second for a 2-1 lead.  After Madison scored one run in the top of the second, West Central added two more in the bottom of the inning.  Connor Mebius scored on an error, and Lorang was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make the score 4-1.

Madison cut the lead to 4-3 with two runs in the top of the third, but West Central answered right back.  Kono scored on an error, and Lorang had a two-run single to push the lead to 7-3.  Mebius had an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth, and Lorang added an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 9-3.  Madison scored four times in the top of the sixth, but the rally was stopped there.

Lorang had three hits and four RBIs.  Mebius had a hit and an RBI.  VanOeverbeke added a single.  Sebert pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed seven runs, five earned, on nine hits and a walk with three strikeouts.  DenBoer pitched the final 1 2/3 innings and allowed three hits and a walk with four strikeouts.

Gamecocks Blanked by Canova in Make-up Game

GThe Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks were held to just three hits and were shut out by the Canova Gang 7-0 on Tuesday, July 12th.  The game was a make-up game from Tuesday, July 5th.

Canova put a run on the board in the bottom of the first and then had a five-run second inning.  The score remained 6-0 until the bottom of the seventh when the Gang scored one more run.

Kyle Bailey and Joe Hanisch each had a double.  Chad Morrison had a single.  Landry Knight pitched two innings and allowed six earned runs on six hits with two walks and a strikeout.  Drew Maras pitched five innings and allowed one earned run on seven hits with a strikeout.  Cole Barthel pitched one inning and didn’t allow a hit or walk.

Volga Holds off Hartford/Humboldt in Two Games

Volga held off the Hartford/Humboldt legion baseball team in both games of a double-header on Tuesday, July 12th.  They won both games by one run, 5-4 and 7-6.

Volga 5, Hartford/Humboldt 4

In the first game of the double-header, Volga got two runs right away in the top of the first inning.  Hartford/Humboldt tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the second.  Derek Renken had a two-run single.  The difference in the game was a single run in the top of the fourth by Volga.  Both teams scored two times in the sixth inning.  Loren Jacobson had an RBI triple, and Gavin Koch had an RBI single.

Koch finished with two hits and an RBI.  Camden McDonald also had two hits, one a double.  Renken had a hit and two RBIs.  Jacobson finished with a triple and an RBI.  Deuce Sherrard and Gage Nelson both had a single.  Andrew Zimmer pitched four innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits and three walks with six strikeouts.  Koch pitched two innings and allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

Volga 7, Hartford/Humboldt 6

In the second game, Volga again got two quick runs in the top of the first inning.  Hartford/Humboldt got one in the bottom of the inning when Sherrard scored on an error.  The big blow came in the top of the third inning when Volga scored five times to take a 7-1 lead.

Hartford/Humboldt spent the rest of the game trying to complete a comeback.  They scored three times in the bottom of the fourth.  Bennett Sebert scored on an error, Domo Chandaswang scored on a passed ball, and Herr also scored on an error to cut the lead to 7-4.  Adam Parsons scored on a double-play ground ball to make it a 7-5 ballgame in the bottom of the fifth.  Koch scored on a fielder’s choice ground ball to make it a one-run game, 7-6, but Volga was able to get the final out to secure the win.

Nelson, Sebert, Chandaswang, and Parsons all had a hit in the game.  Connor Siemonsma had the only RBI for Hartford/Humboldt.  Parsons pitched two innings and allowed seven runs, five earned, on four hits and five walks with two strikeouts.  Chandaswang pitched two innings and allowed a hit and two walks with four strikeouts.  Sebert also pitched two innings and recorded a strikeout.

West Central 16U Holds on to Early Lead in Win

An big early lead helped West Central 16U to a win over the Tea Bolts at home on Tuesday, July 12th.  West Central scored 11 runs in the first two innings to secure a 15-10 victory.

Jesse Jost scored on a wild pitch and Landen Holewa scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the first for a 2-0 lead.  Tea tied the game with two runs in the top of the second, but West Central responded with a big bottom of the second inning.  Carter Evans and B Herr had back-to-back RBI singles.  Jost drove home two with a double.  Holewa followed with a two-run single.  Holewa then scored on a passed ball.  Maison Schuldt had an RBI double, and Cain Grocott added an RBI single to give West Central an 11-2 lead.

West Central got another run in the bottom of the third to make it a 12-2 score.  Tea tried to put together a comeback as they scored four times in the top of the fourth.  West Central got one run back in the bottom of the inning.  The Bolts added another run in the top of the fifth and two more in the top of the sixth to make the score 13-9.  West Central pushed the lead back to six runs with two in the bottom of the sixth.  Evans had an RBI ground out, and Cyrus Maras had an RBI sacrifice bunt.  Tea got just one run in the top of the seventh.

Grocott had three hits, including a double, and an RBI.  Jost finished with two hits, one a double, and three RBIs.  Holewa had a triple and two RBIs.  Evans had a single and two RBIs.  Schuldt finished with a double and an RBI.  Keaton Vessells and Herr both had a single and an RBI.

Will Nester pitched four innings and allowed six runs, three earned, on seven hits and three walks with a strikeout.  Cade Vanderwoude pitched two innings and allowed an earned run on a hit and a walk with three strikeouts.  Jost pitched one inning and allowed three runs, two earned, on two hits and five walks with three strikeouts.

West Central 16U Falls to Harrisburg

The West Central 16U baseball team got behind early and lost 7-3 to Harrisburg on Sunday, July 10th.  Harrisburg scored four times in the top of the first inning and added another in the top of the fourth for a 5-0 lead.

West Central got a run in the bottom of the fourth.  Will Nester had an RBI ground out.  They then closed the gap to 5-2 with another run in the bottom of the fifth.  Bubba Kono had an RBI fielder’s choice.  Harrisburg, however, added two runs in the sixth to extend the lead to 7-2.  Hayes Cain had an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh.

Cain had two hits and an RBI.  Jesse Jost and Cain Grocott both had two hits each.  Landen Holewa, Keaton Vessells, and Carter Evans all had a single.  Nester and Kono each added an RBI.  Holewa pitched six innings and allowed seven runs, six earned, on eight hits and seven walks with six strikeouts.  Grocott pitched one inning and allowed one walk and had two strikeouts.

Madison Broncos Pull Away from Wood Ducks

The Humboldt/Hartford Wood Ducks held a 6-5 lead after the top of the fourth inning, but the Madison Broncos pulled away for a 14-7 win on Sunday, July 10th.

Madison held a 4-2 lead after two innings of play.  The Wood Ducks took the lead in the top of the fourth inning at 6-5.  Madison, however, took control of the game from that point.  They tied the game 6-6 in the bottom of the fourth and then had a three-run fifth for a 9-6 advantage.  The Broncos then outscored the Wood Ducks 5-1 in the seventh and eighth innings for the win.

The Wood Ducks got one more run in the eighth, however the Broncos went on to score five more runs combined in the seventh and eighth innings, helping them to run away with a 14-7 victory over the Wood Ducks.

Gage Nelson had three hits and an RBI.  Nathan Adrian, Preston Riddle, and JJ Jesson all had two hits each.  Adrian and Jesson also had an RBI.  Riddle pitched five innings and allowed nine runs on six hits with four strikeouts.  Logan Colwill pitched 2 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on five hits with one strikeout.

Hartford Sparx Split in State Tournament

The Hartford Sparx played four games at Sherman Park in Sioux Falls at the state tournament between Friday, July 8th and Sunday, July 10th.  The Sparx split in the four games finishing 2-2.

SD Phoenix 18U 12, Hartford Sparx 2

Hartford allowed seven runs in the bottom of the first inning and couldn’t recover in a 12-2 loss to SD Phoenix 18U on Friday.  The Sparx got the first run of the game in the top of the first on an RBI single by Addy Kramer.  After SD Phoenix scored seven times in the first, they had a run in the second and four more in the third.  Avery Evans had a home run for Hartford in the top of the fourth.

Evans had a home run and an RBI.  Kramer had a single and an RBI.  Grace Harden also had a single.  Harden pitched three innings and allowed five earned runs on three hits and four walks.  Taylor Kunzweiler took the loss pitching two innings and allowed seven earned runs on seven hits and a walk.

Hartford Sparx 7, Yankton Fury Red 18U 3

The Sparx rebounded with a 7-3 win over Yankton Fury Red 18U on Saturday.

Caitlyn Maa had an RBI single for Harford in the top of the first.  Payten Meinke had an RBI single in the top of the second to give the Sparx a 2-0 lead.  Yankton tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the second, and then they took the lead in the bottom of the third.

Hartford had a big five-run inning in the top of the fourth.  Harden brought home two with a double.  Evans followed with an RBI single, and Kramer also had an RBI single.  Maa brought home the final run of the inning with a single.

Harden had three hits, two doubles, and two RBIs.  Maa had two hits and two RBIs.  Karmer added two hits and an RBI.  Evans finished with a single and an RBI.  Riley Morrison and Bryten Roth both had two hits, while Jenna Lueth had a single.  Harden pitched four innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Hartford Sparx 2, Fusion Heat 18U 0

In their second game of the day on Saturday, the Sparx got a 2-0 shutout win over Fusion Heat.  Evans had an RBI double, and Kramer had an RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning.  Those two runs were enough for Kunzweiler.  She pitched six innings and allowed six hits and two walks while striking out four.

Evans finished with a double and an RBI.  Kramer had two singles and an RBI.  Maa also had two hits, and Harden finished with a single.

Cyclones Red 18U 6, Hartford Sparx 2

The weekend ended for the Sparx on Sunday with a 6-2 loss to Cyclones Red.  The Cyclones scored all six of their runs in the first three innings.  They scored two runs in the bottom of the first, three in the bottom of the second, and one more in the bottom of the third.

Maa had a two-run home run in the top of the fourth for Hartford.  Harden, Karmer, and McKenna Sichmeller all had singles.  Harden pitched two innings and allowed five earned runs on five hits and four walks.  Kunzweiler pitched two innings and allowed an earned run on two hits and a walk.

West Central 16U Finishes 1-2 in Brookings

The West Central 16U baseball team played three games in Brookings between Friday, July 8th and Saturday, July 9th.  West Central finished 1-2 over the three games.

West Central 6, Brookings Bullets 16U 4

The first game of the weekend was a win for West Central over Brookings Bullets 16U on Friday.  West Central rallied for five runs in the bottom of the fifth to earn the come-from-behind victory.

Brookings scored in the top of the first inning, but West Central responded with a run as well in the bottom of the inning.  Jesse Jost scored on an error by the catcher to tie the game 1-1.  Brookings took the lead with three runs in the top of the fifth inning, but West Central also had their big inning, and all with two outs.

Cain drew a bases-loaded walk for the first run.  Cain Grocott scored on a wild pitch.  Cade Vanderwoude had a two-run single and then later scored on a steal of home to give West Central a 6-4 lead.  Neither team scored in the sixth inning, and Brookings was held scoreless in the top of the seventh.

Vanderwoude had a hit and two RBIs.  Jost had a double.  Cain finished with an RBI.  Cyrus Maras pitched five innings and allowed four earned runs on three hits and four walks with two strikeouts.  Maison Schuldt pitched two innings and allowed just one hit and two walks with one strikeout.

New Ulm C 5, West Central 3

West Central had a 3-1 lead after five innings of play, but New Ulm scored four times in the bottom of the sixth to get the 5-3 win on Friday.

Keaton Vessells had an RBI ground out in the top of the first for West Central.  Carter Evans reached on an error that scored Grocott in the top of the second.  Will Nester scored on an error in the top of the third that had given West Central a 3-0 lead.

Nester had both of the hits for West Central.  Vessells had an RBI.  Vessells also pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed five runs, all unearned, on six hits and six walks with 11 strikeouts.  Maras pitched 1/3 of an inning.

West Central Falls 4-3 in Final Game

In the final game of the weekend on Saturday, West Central lost a back-and-forth game 4-3.

West Central found themselves trailing 2-0 after the bottom of the third inning, but tied the game with two runs in the top of the fourth.  Vessells had an RBI sacrifice fly, and Schuldt had an RBI ground out to tie the game 2-2.  After a run in the bottom of the fifth, West Central tied the game in the top of the seventh to force extra innings.  Grocott scored on a wild pitch to make it a 3-3 game.  The walk-off run came in the bottom of the eighth on an error.

Jost, Nester, and Grocott all had singles in the game.  Vessells and Schuldt each had an RBI.  Vanderwoude pitched seven innings and allowed three runs, none of them earned, on 10 hits and two walks with three strikeouts.  Schuldt pitched 2/3 of an inning and allowed an unearned run on a hit and a walk with a strikeout.

Gamecocks Take Two from Dell Rapids PBR

The Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks took two games from Dell Rapids PBR on Sunday, July 10th.  The first game was an 8-4 victory that was resumed from the suspended game on June 9th.  The Gamecocks followed that with a 15-0 win.

Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks 8, Dell Rapids PBR 4

The game was started on June night and suspended with the Gamecocks leading 6-1.  Humboldt/Hartford scored a run in the top of the first, two in the top of the second, and single runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings.  Dell Rapids scored their run in the bottom of the second.

When the game resumed on July 10th, Dell Rapids picked up a run in the bottom of the second inning.  The Gamecocks and PBR both scored two runs in the eighth inning.

Kyle Bailey had two hits, one a home run, and two RBIs.  Seth Cavanaugh also had two hits and two RBIs.  Joe Hanisch had two hits, one of them also a home run, and an RBI.  Adam Hentges had the other hit in the game.  Landry Knight pitched five innings and allowed an earned run on two hits and four walks with seven strikeouts.  Cam Quigley pitched three innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits and four walks with three strikeouts.  Drew Maras threw one inning and had two strikeouts.

Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks 15, Dell Rapids PBR 0

The Gamecocks belted 19 hits and scored 15 runs in their shutout win in the second game that ended in the fifth inning.  Humboldt/Hartford scored two times in the first, four in the second, one in the third, six in the fourth, and two more in the fifth to end the game.

Noah Vettruss had three hits, one a home run and one a double, and five RBIs.  Hentges had three hits, one a double, and an RBI.  Hanisch finished with a home run and double with two RBIs.  Bailey had two hits, one a double, and two RBIs.  Broc Haldeman finished with two hits and two RBIs.  Knight had two hits and an RBI, while Devon Garry had a hit and an RBI.  Brandon McKnight had two hits, and Cam Quigley and C Maras both had a hit.

Micah Warrington pitched five innings and allowed five hits with three strikeouts.
