Gamecocks Hold off Late Rally By Flandreau

The Hartford-Humboldt Gamecocks scored five runs late in the game, and then held off a Flandreau rally in the ninth to beat the Cardinals 8-6 in Cornbelt League action on Thursday, June 24th.

After two scoreless innings, Flandreau got on the board with a run in the top of the third.  The Gamecocks tied the game in the bottom of the fourth.  Drew DeMers scored on a tag-up off a fly ball from Broc Haldeman even though Flandreau got two other runners out to complete a triple play.

The Gamecocks took the lead in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Chad Morrison.  DeMers hit a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the sixth to give the Gamecocks a 3-1 lead.  Hartford-Humboldt added three more runs in the bottom of the seventh.  Cole Hellie had an RBI sacrifice fly, Drew Maras had an RBI double, and Noah Vettrus also had an RBI double to make the score 6-1.

Flandreau scored a run in the top of the eighth inning, but the Gamecocks got two more runs in the bottom of the inning when two runs scored on an error off a ground ball by Joe Hanisch.  Flandreau put together a rally in the top of the ninth inning scoring four times with two outs, but the Gamecocks were able to get the final out to secure the win.

Hanisch had two hits, one a double, in the game.  Devon Garry also had two hits.  DeMers had a home run and an RBI.  Haldeman had a triple and an RBI.  Maras and Vettrus both had a double and RBI.  Chad Morrison also had a hit.

Tyler Renken pitched 7 2/3 innings allowing two earned runs on five hits with five walks and six strikeouts.  Devon Garry pitched 1 1/3 innings allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts.

West Central 16U Blanks Volga

West Centrals 16U got a 3-0 shutout win over Volga on the road on Thursday, June 24th.  West Central scored in the final three innings of the game for the win.

The first run of the game was scored in the top of the fifth inning.  Camden McDonald drove home Gage Nelson with an RBI single.  West Central added to the lead with another run in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Dalton Mulder.  Owen Heath added to the lead with an RBI sacrifice fly scoring Duece Sherard for a 3-0 lead.

McDonald finished with three hits and an RBI.  Mulder had a hit and RBI.  Dylan Stromer added a double.  Sherard and Derek Renken both had a single in the game.

Mulder pitched three innings allowing no hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.  Heath pitched four innings allowing just two hits while recording four strikeouts.

West Central Royal 14U Gets Walk-off with Big Inning

West Central Royal 14U scored seven times in the bottom of the fourth inning to get a 13-12 walk-off win over Castlewood at home on Wednesday, June 23rd.

Castlewood scored six times without a hit in the top of the first inning for an early 6-0 lead.  West Central cut the lead in half with three runs in the bottom of the first.  Stone Loof had an RBI ground out.  Gavin DeHaven had an RBI single and then scored on a wild pitch to make the score 6-3.  Castlewood continued to score runs on minimal hits.  They scored two runs in the top of the second with one hit and then scored four more runs on just one hit in the top of the third for a 12-3 lead.

West Central got things rolling in the bottom of the third.  DeHaven scored again on a wild pitch.  Ty Sichmeller had an RBI groundout, and Quincy Stephens had an RBI single to cut the the Castlewood lead in half at 12-6.

Then came West Central’s big inning in the bottom of the fourth.  CJ DenBoer singled to lead off the inning and later scored on an error.  DeHaven reached on an error scoring Loof.  Anthony Lanham had an RBI single.  Lanham later scored on a wild pitch to make the score 12-10.  Sichmeller and Stephens scored on wild pitches to tie the game 12-12.  Preston Hostetler drew a walk and eventually made is way to third base.  While DenBoer was at the plate, Hostetler scored on yet another wild pitch to end the game 13-12.

Lanham had three hits and an RBI.  DeHaven finished with two hits.  Stephens had a hit and RBI, and DenBoer also had a single.  Loof and Sichmeller had RBIs.

Sichmeller pitched one inning allowing six earned runs on three walks and six hit batters with one strikeout.  Loof pitched three innings allowing six runs, four earned, on two hits with five walks and eight strikeouts.

Two Late Runs Gives West Central Gold 14U the Win

West Central 14U Gold took advantage of four errors in the bottom of the sixth inning and scored two runs to get a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Baltic on Wednesday, June 23rd.

Baltic scored their run in the top of the first inning when Beau Breece scored on a steal of home.  The score remained 1-0 through most of the game as the two starting pitchers combined to strikeout 17 batters through six innings of play.

Cooper Mulder started the sixth inning by reaching on an error on a fly ball to left field.  Nick Lorang followed by reaching on an error by the second baseman.  Both Mulder and N. Lorang stole a base later in the inning.  Evan Jaton hit a ground ball to shortstop, but reached on an error as Mulder scored the tying run.  Seth Lind followed that at bat with a ground ball to second base also reaching on an error that allowed N. Lorang to score the go-ahead run.

West Central was held to just two hits in the game.  Zach Lorang and N. Lorang both had singles.  Brody Jacobson pitched six innings allowing one earned run on two hits with no walks and nine strikeouts.  Caden Alfson pitched the final inning for the win by striking out all three batters.

Big Inning Late Helps Tri-Valley White 14U to Win over West Central Royal 14U

Tri-Valley White scored six times in the bottom of the fifth inning to help them to a 10-5 win over West Central Royal on Tuesday, June 22nd.

West Central scored the first four runs of the game.  Stone Loof had an RBI ground out and Gavin DeHaven had an RBI single in the top of the first inning.  Loof put a ball in play and reached on an error as Preston Hostetler and Landen Holewa scored to give West Central a 4-0 lead in the second inning.

Tri-Valley cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Dylan Christensen drew a bases-loaded walk, and Blaine Wieczorek hit a ground ball that resulted in an error scoring Grant Schlueter.  Tri-Valley then took the lead with six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Gage Egger had a three-run double.  Egger later scored on an error in the inning.  Denton Bicknase had an RBI ground out, and Wieczorek had a bases-loaded walk to give Tri-Valley an 8-4 lead.

West Central added another run in the top of the sixth inning when Holewa stole home, but Tri-Valley got two more runs in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Egger and then Egger scoring on another error.

DeHaven had two hits, including a double, and an RBI for West Central.  Anthony Lanham had two hits.  Holewa had a hit, while Loof had an RBI.  Quincy Stephens pitched 2 2/3 innings with five walks and four strikeouts.  Hostetler pitched 1 1/3 innings allowing eight runs, four earned, on four hits with six walks and a strikeout.  CJ DenBoer pitched 1 2/3 innings allowing two earned runs on two hits with four walks and three strikeouts.

Egger had two hits for Tri-Valley, including a double, and four RBIs.  Levi Kretzchmar had two hits.  Matthew Cypher and Schlueter both had a single.  Benjamin Myhre, Bicknase, Christensen, and Wieczorek all had an RBI.  Myhre pitched three innings allowing four runs, two earned, on four hits with six walks and two strikeouts.  Egger pitched four innings allowing a run, which was unearned, on one hit with one walk and four strikeouts.

West Central Gold 14U Splits Games on Back-to-Back Nights

West Central Gold 14U (10-2) played two games on back-to-back nights, winning one and losing the other.

West Central hosted Elkton on Monday, June 21st getting an 11-1 win in five innings.  West Central scored four times in the bottom of the first, two in the second, one in the third, and then four in the bottom of the fifth to end the game on the 10-run rule.

Caden Alfson had two home runs and five RBIs in the game.  Seth Lind had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs.  Zach Lorang had two hits and an RBI.  Brody Jacobson collected two singles.  Jack Sebert had a double and an RBI.  Nick Lorang pitched 2 2/3 innings allowing one earned run on three hits with one walk and two strikeouts.  Sebert pitched two innings allowing a hit with four strikeouts.

West Central then welcomed Dell Rapids to town on Tuesday, June 22nd.  Dell Rapids took a 6-1 lead heading into the bottom of the second inning eventually increasing that lead to 13-4 after five innings.  West Central rallied for five runs in the bottom of the sixth, but Dell Rapids held on for the win.

Cooper Mulder had three hits and four RBIs.  Alfson had a hit with two RBIs.  Jacob Kono had a hit and an RBI.  Brody Jacobson had two hits, and Evan Jaton had a double.  Kono pitched two innings allowing six earned runs on three hits with four walks and a strikeout.  Jaton pitched three innings allowing seven runs, five earned, on seven hits with four walks and two strikeouts.  Seth Lind pitched an inning allowing a hit and two walks along with a strikeout.  Alfson pitched an inning and recorded three strikeouts.

West Central 16U Scores Big Win over Tea

The West Central 16U (5-2) team scored in every inning in a 13-0 win over Tea on Monday, June 21st in Tea.  West Central held Tea to just three total hits in the game while collecting 11 of their own.

West Central scored three in the first, two in the second, five in the third, one in the fourth, and two more in the fifth before the game ended on the 10-run rule.

Andrew Zimmer had four hits, with one double and one triple, and three RBIs.  Duece Sherard had a hit and three RBIs.  Xzavian Ferris had a double with two RBIs.  Camden McDonald and Jon Murray both had a hit and an RBI.  Dylan Stromer, Derek Renken, and Cade Vander Woude all had a single in the game.

Renken pitched two innings allowing one hit with three strikeouts.  Sherard pitched three innings allowing two hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

Gamecocks Beat Madison, Fall to Mudcats

The Hartford-Humboldt Gamecocks have split their last two Cornbelt League games.  The Gamecocks earned a 3-2 victory over the Madison Broncos on Thursday, June 17th, but fell to the Dell Rapids Mudcats 17-6 on Sunday, June 20th.

The Gamecocks scored the first run in the top of the second inning after an RBI single by Adam Hentges.  The scored remained 1-0 until the bottom of the seventh.  Madison scored two times to take a 2-1 lead.  The Gamecocks tied the game on a RBI ground out by Noah Vettrus and then took the lead on an RBI single by Cam Quigley.  The Broncos threatened to tie the game, or win it, in the bottom of the ninth.  They got their first two batters on with singles, but the tying run was left at second base.

Hentges, Quigley, and Vettrus all had a single and RBI in the game.  Joe Hanisch had a double.  Broc Haldeman, Drew Maras, and Jon Maras all had singles as well.  Quigley pitched 6 2/3 innings allowing two earned runs on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts.  Haldeman pitched the final 2 1/3 innings allowing three hits with three strikeouts.

Hartford-Humboldt put together a two-run second, one-run third, two-run fourth, and one-run fifth inning to take a 6-5 lead over the Mudcats heading into the bottom of the fifth on Sunday.  Dell Rapids then had two very big innings.  The Mudcats scored five times in the fifth and seven more in the sixth for a 17-6 lead, and the game ended on the 10-run rule in the seventh inning.

Tyler Renken had a triple and single in the game.  D Maras had two hits.  J. Maras had a double.  Drew DeMers, Quigley, Hentges, and Cam Morrison all had singles in the game.

Hartford Sparx Finished 3-1-1 in Pierre

The Hartford Sparx 18U softball team finished 3-1-1 in five games in Pierre on Saturday, June 19th and Sunday, June 20th.

Hartford opened the weekend with a 13-1 win over the OhNos on Saturday.  The Sparx scored 11 times in the bottom of the first inning and held OhNos to just two total hits in the game.

Brooke Opitz had three hits, including a triple, and two RBIs.  Avery Evans had two hits, one a double, and an RBI.  Grace Harden also had two hits and an RBI.  Olivia Brown finished with two hits, one of them a double.  McKenna Sichmeller had a hit with two RBIs.  Addy Kramer had a double with an RBI.  Jenna Lueth had a hit and RBI, and Riley Morrison had a hit.  Harden pitched four innings allowing one run, which was unearned, on two hits with eight strikeouts.

The Sparx scored five times in the bottom of the third and held on to beat SD The Assault 18U by a score of 5-4.  Brown had a double with two RBIs in the game.  Caitlyn Maa also had a double and an RBI.  Opitz, Harden, Evans, Taylor Kunzweiler, and Lueth all collected a single in the game.  Kunzweiler pitched five innings allowing four earned runs on five hits with seven walks and a strikeout.

The third game of the day on Saturday was against the Jamestown Outlaws.  Both teams scored a run in the first inning, and then the game remained scoreless finishing in a 1-1 tie.  Jamestown had four hits, while Hartford had five hits in the game.  Kramer had two of the five hits and an RBI.  Optiz, Maa, and Sichmeller each had a hit.  Harden pitched four innings allowing an earned run on four hits with three walks and nine strikeouts.

In the first game on Sunday, Hartford scored five times in the first two innings and finished the win over Black Hills Synergy by a scored of 7-2.  Harden had three hits with two RBIs.  Opitiz had two hits, one of them a double.  Sichmeller also had two hits.  Kramer had a hit with three RBIs.  Evans had a single and an RBI.  Brown, Lueth and Morrison also had singles.  Kunzweiler pitched four innings allowing two earned runs on five hits with a walk and four strikeouts.  Harden pitched one inning and finished with two strikeouts.

The Sparx met the Jamestown Outlaws again in their final game on Sunday.  This time the Outlaws scored two runs in the first, second and third innings while holding the Sparx to single runs in the second, third, and fourth innings.  The Outlaws handed Hartford their only loss, 6-3.  Morrison had two hits and an RBI.  Brown had a single and an RBI.  Sichmeller added a double.  Opitz, Maa, Kramer, and Lueth all had singles in the game.  Harden had an RBI as well.  Harden pitched 3 2/3 innings allowing six earned runs on eight hits with three walks and six strikeouts.

Hartford Sparx Win Two over Yankton Fury Fire

The Hartford Sparx 18U softball team got two wins over the Yankton Fury Fire 18U team on Thursday, June 17th.  The Sparx won by scores of 12-2 and 11-6.

In the first game, Yankton held a 2-1 lead after the first inning.  Hartford scored two times in the bottom of the second, but it was a nine-run third inning that solidified the win for Hartford.

McKenna Sichmeller had two triples in the game with four RBIs.  Grace Harden had three hits.  Caitlyn Maa finished with two hits and an RBI.  Addy Kramer had a triple and RBI.  Brooke Opitz, Avery Evans, Taylor Kunzweiler, and Riley Morrison all had an a hit and RBI.  Jenna Lueth also had an RBI.  Harden pitched all four innings allowing two earned runs on five hits with a walk and five strikeouts.

Despite a closer score in the second game, the Sparx still took control of the game early in the top of the first scoring seven times.  Yankton cut the lead to 7-5 with a five-run second inning, but Hartford make sure there would not be a comeback as they scored four times in the top of the third.

Olivia Brown had three hits and four RBIs in the second game.  Kramer had a hit and two RBIs.  Evans, Kunzweiler, and Morrison all had a hit and RBI.  Maa finished with two hits.  Opitz and Lueth both had an RBI.  Kunzweiler pitched three innings allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
