January 27, 2021 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

A quick start and an early lead fueled a 75-67 win for the Tri-Valley Mustangs over the Canton C-Hawks on Tuesday, January 26th.

Tri-Valley got out to a double-digit lead early in the game, and that was enough for the Mustangs to hold on for the win.  Tri-Valley led 24-15 at the end of the first quarter and pushed the lead to 15 points at 43-28 by halftime.

Canton made spurts throughout the second half, but Tri-Valley was able to respond.  After cutting into the lead in the third quarter, the C-Hawks couldn’t stop the Mustang offense as Tri-Valley, again, led by 15 at the end of the third quarter, 64-49.  The C-Hawks made a late run, but it was too late as Tri-Valley secured the win.

Canton Stuns Tri-Valley Girls

The Canton C-Hawks stunned the Tri-Valley Mustangs when Paige Schroedermeier hit the game-winning buzzer-beater from the free-throw line to give Canton a 49-47 road victory on Tuesday, January 26th.

Both teams went on scoring runs in the first three quarters, while most of the fourth quarter was back-and-forth.  Tri-Valley had the first advantage outscoring Canton 16-9 in the first quarter.  The C-Hawks reversed that trend and outscored the Mustangs 16-6 in the second quarter for a 25-22 halftime lead.

The Mustangs started the second half on a 10-2 run and led 32-27 with 3:45 to go in the third quarter.  Canton closed the quarter on an 8-5 run to cut into the lead.  Tri-Valley led 37-35 heading into the final quarter.  The lead changed hands multiple times, and Canton had a 47-46 lead with 1:30 to play.  Tri-Valley tied the game from the free-throw line with :45 on the clock.  The game-winning shot came off of a Tri-Valley turnover for Canton.

The Mustangs shot 32% (13-41) from the field, 18% (3-17) from three-point area, and 62% (18-29) from the free-throw line.  Tri-Valley also out rebounded the C-Hawks 39-25, but the Mustangs turned the ball over 24 times in the game.

Kaitlyn Mohnen had 17 points, eight rebounds, and three steals.  Steph Buchmann finished with 11 points, three rebounds, and two steals.  Paige Jewett had eight points.  Tabor Teel had four points, 15 rebounds, and five steals.

Tri-Valley Boys Fall Short at Dakota Valley

January 23, 2021 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The Tri-Valley Mustang boys basketball team fell a little short on the road against the Dakota Valley Panthers on Friday, January 22nd.  The Panthers got the 76-68 victory.

Tri-Valley dictated the pace of the game through much of the first quarter.  They had a 15-10 lead, but the Panthers started to heat up from the outside and went on a 9-0 run to end the quarter.  Dakota Valley led 19-15 after the first quarter.   The Panthers slowly built their lead to double digits by halftime and led 44-34.

The Mustangs kept themselves in the games in the second half.  Every time the Panthers tried to make an extended run, Tri-Valley got a much needed basket.  Dakota Valley, however, was able to push the lead to 16 points at 62-46 heading into the final quarter.  The lead would stay about that spot until the final couple minutes of the game.  Tri-Valley made a late run, but ran out of time.

The Mustangs finished the game shooting 38% (20-52) from the field, 36% (8-22) from three-point area, and 78% (18-23) from the free-throw line.

Three players finished in double figures.  Nick Haas had 22 points and three rebounds.  Riley Haynes finished with 18 points, five rebounds, and two steals.  Tyler Johnson added 16 points and five rebounds.

Tri-Valley (3-6) will host Canton on Tuesday, January 26th.

Dakota Valley Outlasts Mustang Girls

January 23, 2021 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The Dakota Valley Panthers made a big run late in the second half and outlasted the Tri-Valley Mustangs on Friday, January 22nd at Dakota Valley High School.  The Mustangs fell to the Panthers 51-60.

Dakota Valley did have the lead early in the game.  They held a 12-10 advantage after the first quarter.  The Mustangs went on an 8-0 run in the second quarter and finished the first half with a 25-22 lead.

The Mustangs shot the ball well in the third quarter and extended their lead.  Tri-Valley led by seven points at 43-36 with seconds remaining in the quarter before Dakota Valley made a three-point shot at the buzzer.  The Panthers then made a three-pointer to start the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 43-42.  Those back-to-back three pointers sparked the Panther offense.  They were 7-10 shooting in the quarter and a perfect 5-5 from the free-throw line and outscored Tri-Valley 21-8 in the final quarter for the win.

Tri-Valley finished the game shooting 37% (18-49) from the field, 23% (5-22) from three-point area, and 77% (10-13) from the free-throw line.
