Trojan and Mustang Volleyball Seasons End in Region 3A Tournament

Both the West Central Trojan and Tri-Valley Mustang volleyball seasons came to an end in the opening round of the Region 3A Tournament.

The Trojans entered the tournament as the #7 seed and traveled to Garretson to play the #2 seed Blue Dragons.  The match was held on Monday, November 1st.  Gararetson won in straight sets by scores of 25-10, 25-14, and 25-18.  West Central’s season ends with an overall record of 7-19.

Tri-Valley was the #8 seed in the tournament and played #1 Sioux Falls Christian in Sioux Falls on Tuesday, November 2nd.  The Chargers also won in straight sets by scores of 25-11, 25-9, and 25-10.  The Mustangs finished the season with a record of 1-23.

No stats were available for either match at the time of writing.

Tri-Valley’s Season Ends in Quarterfinals

The Tri-Valley Mustang football had their 2021 season come to an end in the quarterfinals on Thursday, October 28th.  The Mustangs fell to the Vermillion Tanagers 21-7.

Vermillion scored on the first drive of the game.  The Tanagers had a nine-play, 79-yard drive that lasted 4:04 giving them a 7-0 lead with 7:56 in the opening quarter.  The scored remained 7-0 at the quarter break.  The Tanagers scored again in the second quarter with 7:35 in the half after a 49-yard drive.  Vermillion led 14-0 at halftime.

Tri-Valley scored on their first drive of the second half.  They had a seven-play, 64-yard drive that ended on a six-yard touchdown run by Jaden Siemonsma.  Reese Smith made the extra point to make the score 14-7 with 8:29 to play in third quarter.  The score was still 14-7 heading into the final quarter.

Vermillion got a big score just thirty seconds into the fourth quarter.  A big pass play followed by a four-yard touchdown run with 11:28 to go in the game put the Tanagers ahead 21-7.  Tri-Valley only had one possession in the fourth quarter, which ended in a turnover on downs.  Vermillion was able to run out the clock over the last final 8:54 of the game.

Siemonsma had five carries for 41 yards and a touchdown.  Isaac McFarland had five carries for 21 yards, and Eli McFarland finished with a 13-yard carry.  Owen Besmer was 4-8 passing for 40 yards and an interception.  Austin McNulty had a 32-yard catch, and Siemonsma had three catches for eight yards.

Siemonsma led the team with seven tackles.  Tyson VanDerVliet had six tackles.  Besmer had five tackles and an interception.  Logan Ellison, Colby Carruthers, and Caden Reuter all had five tackles each.  I. McFarland, Mason Hendrixson, Connor Christensen, and Zach Powell all had four tackles.  Lawson Loiseau also had an interception.

Tri-Valley finished the season with a 5-5 record.

Mustang Volleyball Gets First Win on Final Match of Regular Season

The Tri-Valley Mustangs got their first win of the season on the final regular season match on Monday, October 25th.  Tri-Valley traveled to West Central and earned a four-set win over the Trojans by scores of 25-20, 25-19, 19-25, and 25-21.

Erica Bicknase had a team-high 13 kills.  Hillary Hastings, Lauren Grinde, and Madelyn Wenzel all had five kills each.  Jenna Hanson added four kills.  Nevaeh Grann and Brookelyn Stieben both had three ace serves.  Grann also had 16 set assists, while Stieben had 14.  Four players had double-figure digs in the match.  Jenna Hanson had a team-high 18 digs, Allyson Haga had 17, and Stieben and Hannah West both had 10 digs.

Head coach Justin Nihart said, “A lot of credit for the win can go to my two senior defensive specialists Ally Haga and Jenna Hanson for the tremendous effort and grit they showed in the back row by constantly being on the floor and diving for balls.  Also, Erica Bicknase led the charge for our offense.”

The Mustangs finished the regular season with a record of 1-22.  Tri-Valley will begin Region 3A tournament play on Tuesday, November 2nd.

Peters Ends Cross Country Season State

Brie Peters finished the 2021 season for herself and the Tri-Valley Mustang cross country team at the 2021 South Dakota Class A State Meet at Yankton Trail Park in Sioux Falls on Saturday, October 23rd.

Peters finished 34th in the state with a time of 20:30.06.

Mustangs Hold Final Home Match of 2021 Season

The Tri-Valley Mustangs had their final regular season home match of the volleyball season on Friday, October 22nd.  The Mustangs hosted Tea Area and also recognized their seasons.  This year’s seniors are Hannah West, Brooklin Hoek,  Allyson Haga, Jenna Hanson, and Alivia Grann.  The Titans won the match in straights sets by scores of 25-16, 25-21, and 25-17.

Hanson and Haga both had eight digs each to lead the team.  Haga also had two ace serves, while Hoek had one.  Megan Wenzel finished with five kills, and Erica Bicknase had three.  Madelyn Wenzel and four blocks.  Me. Wenzel finished with two.  Brookelyn Stieben had nine set assists, and Nevaeh Grann finished with four.

Tri-Valley will finish the 2021 regular season on the road at West Central on Monday, October 25th.

Mutangs Fall in Final Home Game of Regular Season

The Tri-Valley Mustangs hosted the Dell Rapids Quarriers in the final regular season home game on Thursday, October 21st.  On the line was a home game in the opening round of the playoffs as both teams entered the game with a 5-3 record and tied for fourth in seed points.

Dell Rapids got on the board first in the opening drive of the game for an early 7-0 lead.  Owen Besmer pulled the Mustangs within in a point later in the quarter on a two-yard run, but the extra point was missed.  The score remained 7-6 after the first quarter.

That’s when the Quarrier offense got going.  Dell Rapids scored two more touchdowns in the second quarter for a 20-6 halftime lead.  Neither team got a touchdown in third quarter, but Dell Rapids did make a 22-yard field goal to push the lead to 23-6 heading into the final quarter.  The Quarriers then scored three more touchdowns in the final quarter for a 43-6 victory.

The Mustangs were held to just 185 yards of total offense, 181 rushing yards and just four passing yards.  Dell Rapids finished with 398 yards of offense, 300 rushing yards and 98 passing yards.  Issac McFarland led the ground attack for Tri-Valley with 10 carries for 66 yards.  Besmer was just 1-11 passing for four yards.  Lawson Loiseau had the four-yard catch.

Tri-Valley finishes the regular season with a 5-4 record and will be the #6 seed in the 11A playoffs.  The Mustangs will travel back to Vermillion on Thursday, October 28th.

Tri-Valley Volleyball Plays Close Match Against Lennox

Tri-Valley played a close match against the Lennox Orioles on Monday, October 18th.  The match went four sets, but the Orioles won by set scores of 25-19, 18-25, 25-14, and 25-19.

Megan Wenzel had a team-high eight kills.  Madelyn Wenzel had four kills.  Ally Haga finished with 15 digs, and Jenna Hanson had 11 digs.  Me. Wenzel finished with four blocks.  Brooklyn Stieben had seven set assists, while Nevaeh Grann had five set assists.  Hannah West had two ace serves.

The Mustangs will travel to Mt Vernon to play the Titans on Tuesday, October 19th.

Mustang Volleyball Finishes 0-3 at Dak-12 Tournament

The Tri-Valley Mustang volleyball team played in the Dak-12 Conference Tournament in Tea on Saturday, October 16th.  The Mustangs finished the day 0-3.

Canton defeated the Mustangs by scores of 25-20 and 25-23.  Hillary Hastings and Ava Pearson both had four kills in the match.  Erica Bicknase had three kills.  Megan Wenzel had two ace serves.  Madelyn Wenzel finished with three blocks, and Pearson had two.  Nevaeh Grann tallied seven set assists, while Brookelyn Stieben had six assists.  Hannah West had a team-high six digs, and Hastings and Jenna Hanson both had four digs.

Tri-Valley fell to the West Central Trojans by scores of 25-16 and 25-22.  Me. Wenzel and Ma. Wenzel both had four kills.  Lauren Grinde had three kills.  Allyson Haga had a team-high three ace serves.  Grann finished with seven set assists, and Stieben had four assists.  Haga also had seven digs, Stieben had six, and Hanson had five digs.

Vermillion also defeated the Mustangs 25-20 and 25-19.  Ma. Wenzel and Bicknase both had four kills.  Haga and West each had two ace serves.  Grinde and Ma. Wenzel had two blocks.  Hanson, Grann, and Haga all finished with five digs.  Hastings and Stieben both had four digs.  Stieben led the team with three set assists.

Late Score Gives Tri-Valley Win over Vermillion

A sack with fumble recovery late in the game triggered a game-winning drive by the Tri-Valley Mustangs on Friday, October 15th in Vermillion.  Mason Hendrixson got a sack with fumble and recovery with 5:47 to go in a tie game.  The Mustangs then drove 79 yards down the field in nine plays, and Owen Besmer scored on a one-yard quarterback sneak with :24 to go to give Tri-Valley a 20-13 win over the Tanagers.

The Mustangs scored first in the opening quarter.  Besmer scored on a one-yard run with 6:02 to go.  The extra point was no good.  The score remained 6-0 at the end of the first quarter.  Vermillion tied the game in the second quarter with 7:33 to go.  Their extra point attempt was also no good.  The game was tied 6-6 at halftime.

Despite kicking off to start the third quarter, the Tanagers scored in the first few seconds.  The kickoff bounced strait into the air at about the Mustang three yard line instead of rolling into the endzone for a touchback.  The Mustangs had to try to scramble to recover the ball, but Vermillion recovered the fumble in the endzone for a touchdown.  The extra point was good, and the Tanagers lead 13-7.

Isaac McFarland scored on the very first play of the fourth quarter on a nine yard run.  Reese Smith made the extra point, and the game was tied 13-13 with 11:53 to play.  The score remained tied until the game-winning drive by the Mustangs.

Besmer had 24 carries for 173 yards and two touchdowns.  I. McFarland finished with 10 carries for 46 yards and a touchdown.  Jaden Siemonsma also had five carries for 27 yards.  Besmer was also 2-8 passing.  I. McFarland had 11 tackles.  Siemonsma had 10 tackles.  Isaac Nehlich finished with seven tackles, Brandon Havlovic had six, and Colby Carruthers had five.  Eli McFarland and Lawson Loiseau both had an interception.

Tri-Valley (5-3) will host the Dell Rapids Quarriers on Thursday, October 21st in the final regular season game of the year.

Peters Headed Back to State Cross Country Meet

Brie Peters will be heading back to the state cross country meet after a top 20 finish at regions on Thursday, October 14th.  Three varsity runners for the Tri-Valley Mustang cross country team ran in the Region 2A in Madison.

Peters finished sixth individually with a time of 21:00.02.  Lizzy Dahl was 36th with a time of 24:55.73.  Teagin Gacke had a 34th place finish with a time of 20:20.72.

Peters will run in the 2021 South Dakota Class A State Cross Country meet on Saturday, October 23rd at Yankton Trail Park in Sioux Falls.
