Dell Rapids 14U Softball Wins Silver Bracket at Mitchell Tournament

The Dell Rapids 14U softball team won the silver bracket of the Lowell Rang Memorial Tournament in Mitchell on Saturday, June 12th and Sunday, June 13th.

Dell Rapids played in a pool play format on Saturday to determine which tournament bracket and seed they would play in a single-elimination tournament on Sunday. 

In the opening game of pool play, Dell Rapids fell to TSC Hurricanes 9-5.  Dell Rapids got three runs in the bottom of the first inning after the Hurricanes scored one, but the Hurricanes scored three runs in the third, three runs in the fourth, and two more in the fifth.  Dell Rapids was held to just one run in the third and one in the fifth after the first inning.  Elly Olson and Kya Alderson both had two hits in the game.  Alderson  pitched six innings allowing nine earned runs on 13 hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Dell Rapids then played Midwest Speed, and Midwest Speed scored six runs in the first two innings and three more in the sixth to get a 9-4 win over Dell Rapids.  Brynlee Kriens had two hits and an RBI.  Alderson pitched all six innings allowing nine runs on 16 hits with nine strikeouts.

In the final pool play game on Saturday, Dell Rapids earned a victory over Brookings Outlaws.  Brookings scored three times in the top of the first, but Dell Rapids got four runs in the bottom of the inning and then added five more in the bottom of the second for a 9-3 lead.  They had one more run in the third and two more in the fourth for a 12-3 advantage.  Brookings scored five times in the top of the fifth, but Dell Rapids held off Brookings’ rally for the win.  Mikaylah O’Meara had two doubles and five RBIs.  Alderson had five innings on the mound allowing eight runs on 12 hits with four strikeouts.

Dell Rapids earned the #2 seed in the silver bracket and got a first round bye.  Dell Rapids played the Mankato Peppers in the semifinals, and using a seven-run third inning, advanced to the championship game with an 11-1 victory.  O’Meara had three hits, including a triple and double, with two more RBIs.  Addy Van’t Hof had two hits and two RBIs.  Alderson pitched four innings allowing just one run on three hits with four strikeouts.

Dell Rapids drew a familiar opponent for the championship game.  They took the TSC Hurricanes again, but this time Dell Rapids was victorious after scoring eight runs in the middle innings.  Dell Rapids got the win 11-4.  O’Meara had three hits, one of them a double, with five RBIs.  Olson had two hits, including a double, and an RBI.  Alderson pitched once again throwing six innings allowing four runs on 11 hits with three walks and 10 strikeouts.

Mudcats Win Seventh Straight Game

The Dell Rapids Mudcats are on a roll as they won their seventh straight game on Sunday, June 13th.  Dell Rapids defeated the Hartford-Humboldt Wood Ducks 15-8 in Humboldt.

Dalton Lehnen started the scoring with a two run double in the top of the first inning.  After the Wood Ducks got a run back int he bottom of the second, Trevor Freudenthal had an RBI sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth.  Chad Hunt scored a run on an error, and Travis Peters brought home another in the top of the fifth inning for a 5-1 lead after five innings.

The Mudcats then scored seven times in the top of the sixth inning.  Grant Olson scored on a wild pitch.  Hunt had a two-run double, and Josh Roemen followed with a two run double of his own.  Peters later scored in the inning on a wild pitch.  The Mudcats led 12-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Wood Ducks scored six runs of their own to keep the game going.

Hunt and Roemen both had RBI hits in the seventh inning, and Hunt had one more RBI single in the ninth.

Hunt and Roemen both finished with three hits and four RBIs.  Hunt had one double, and Roemen had two.  Peters had two hits and an RBI.  Dalton Allen had two hits.  Olson had a hit and an RBI.  Ty Hoglund finished with a hit, and Bauer had a double.

Hoglund was the winning pitcher in the game.

Dell Rapids 16U Takes First in I-29 League Tournament

The Dell Rapids 16U teener team took home first place in the I-29 League Tournament.  They played four games from Friday, June 11th to Sunday, June 13th, winning all of them. 

Dell Rapids’ only game on Friday was a 9-0 win over Hamlin.  Dell Rapids got three runs in the bottom of the first inning and cruised from there as the defense held Hamlin to just one hit in the game.

Joe Rechtenbaugh had three hits, including two doubles, and three RBIs. Dylan Mathis had two hits, one a triple, and three RBIs.  Brayden Pankonen and Braden Fersdahl both had a hit and RBI.  Will Jaton and Kade Kremer also had hits in the game.  Rechtenbaugh pitched 2 2/3 innings allowing just one hit with one walk and six strikeouts.  Jaton pitched 1 1/3 innings striking out three batters.  CJ Smith pitched an inning with two strikeouts, and Pankonen pitched an inning with two strikeouts.

In their first game on Saturday, Dell Rapids and Madison White were locked in a tight battle with the score remaining 0-0 through three innings.  Dell Rapids broke through in the fourth inning with a run, added three more in the top of the fifth, and a sixth run in the top of the sixth for a 6-0 lead.  Madison scored a couple of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a couple of passed balls, but Dell Rapids stopped the rally and won the game 6-2.

Pankonen had two hits, one a triple, and two RBIs.  Jaton had two hits, with a double.  Fersdahl, Sutton Williams, and John Mortrude all had singles in the game.  Jaton pitched five innings of no-hit baseball with four walks and seven strikeouts.  Fersdahl gave up two earned runs on no hits with three walks and a strikeout in one inning of work.

Dell Rapids rode a three-run first inning to a 4-1 win over Elkton in their second game on Saturday.  Dell Rapids added their fourth run in the top of the fourth inning, while Elkton’s lone run came in the bottom of the fifth. 

Smith had a three-hit game along with an RBI.  Jaton had a triple and an RBI.  Mortrude had a hit and RBI.  Micah Pickard had a double, and Pankonen had a hit as well.  Pankonen also pitched a six-inning complete game allowing one run, unearned, on two hits with one walk and 12 strikeouts.

The win over Elkton put Dell Rapids in the championship game on Sunday in Garretson against West Central  Dell Rapids had three big innings and held off a West Central rally to take the tournament title by a score of 12-9.

West Central scored first in the bottom of the first, but Dell Rapids responded with four in the top of the second.  West Central cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom of the second at 4-2.  Dell Rapids then added four runs in the top of the fourth and three more in the top of the fifth for an 11-2 lead.  West Central got two runs in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 11-4.  Both teams got a run in the sixth inning, and Dell Rapids led 12-5 heading into the seventh.  Dell Rapids was held scoreless in the inning while West Central was able to score four runs before an out was recorded, but Dell Rapids was able to regroup and shut down the rally for the win.

Jaton had a hit with two RBIs.  Pankonen, Mathis, Mortrude, and Evan Nelson all had a hit and RBI.  Fersdahl collected two hits.  Pickard, Smith, and Aiden Geraets all had a hit.  Rechtenbaugh pitched 4 1/3 innings allowing four runs, two earned, on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts.  Smith pitched 2 2/3 innings allowing five runs, four earned, on four hits with two strikeouts.

Dell Rapids Legion Starts Season 1-2

The Dell Rapids Legion baseball team had three road games, all on three nights in a row, to start the 2021 season.  Dell Rapids traveled to Vermillion on Tuesday, June 8th, falling by a score of 13-3.  They then went to Madison on Wednesday, June 9th, again falling by a score of 13-3.  The final road game of the week was at Dakota Valley, and Dell Rapids came home with a 13-7 extra inning victory.

Dell Rapids got on the board first in Vermillion.  Riley Peter scored on a wild pitch in the top of the second inning.  Dell Rapids took advantage of five straight walks to start the third inning.  Andrew Van Dam and Caleb Kittleson had RBI bases-loaded walks for a 3-0 lead.  That was all the runs Dell Rapids would get as they were actually held hitless in the game.  Vermillion scored six in the bottom of the third, six more in the bottom of the fourth, and a final run in the bottom of the fifth.

Brady Larson pitched 2 2/3 innings allowing six runs, two earned, on four  hits  with three walks.   Van Dam pitched two innings allowing seven runs, six earned, on four hits with four walks and one strikeout.

Dell Rapids had another tough game in Madison.  They committed six errors and only had one hit in the game.  Again they scored the first three runs, all three coming in the top of the third inning.  Zeb Schumaker scored on an error, Connor Libis scored on a wild pitch, and Noah Swartwout had an RBI  double for the 3-0 lead.  Madison responded with five runs in the bottom of the third, five more in the bottom of the fourth, and the final three in the bottom of the fifth to win on the 10-run rule.

Landon Ruesink pitched 3 1/3 innings allowing eight runs, four earned, on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts.  Jake Steineke pitched 1 1/3 innings allowing five runs, one earned, on two hits with three walks and one strikeout.

The offense and defense put together a solid game in the third one in as many days at Dakota Valley.   Dakota Valley scored three times in the bottom of the first.  Dell Rapids two two runs in the top of the third.  Libis scored on a wild pitch, and Ruesink scored on an error to cut the lead to 3-2.  Dakota Valley scored four times in the bottom of the third to build a 7-2 lead, but Dell Rapids chipped away throughout the game.

Schumaker had a two-run double in the top of the fourth and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Josh Deknikker.  Dell Rapids tied the game in the top of the fifth when Kittleson hit a two-run double to center field.  The score remained 7-7 through the seventh as well as two extra innings.  In the top of the 10th, Dell Rapids scored six times.  Larson had a two-run single, Bryce Sommerfeld had an RBI single, Deknikker had an RBI double, and Libis had a two-run single to give Dell Rapids the 13-7 lead and win.

Schumaker had three hits, including a double, and two RBIs.  Larson, Kittleson, and Deknikker all had two hits, all with one double, and two RBIs each.  Libis had a hit with two RBIs, Sommerfeld had a hit with an RBI, Ruesink finished with two doubles, and Swartwout also had a hit.

Swartwout pitched three innings allowing seven runs, three earned, on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts.  Kittleson pitched 5 1/3 innings with no runs on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts.  Larson pitched the final 2/3 of an inning to earn the win while picking up a strikeout.

PBR Back in Win Column with Win over Colman

Dell Rapids PBR got back in the win column with a 13-3 win in eight innings over Colman on Thursday, June 10th at Rickeman Field in Dell Rapids. 

Both teams scored a run in the opening inning, but PBR took the lead for good in the bottom of the second inning, scoring four runs with two outs.  Brandon Geraets had an RBI single and Riley Hoffman had a three-run triple to give PBR a 5-1 lead.  Colman had a run in the top of the third, but Riley Calhoon put PBR back in front by four with a home run in the bottom of the inning.  Matt Gillogly added a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to give Dell Rapids an 8-2 lead. 

Colman picked up their third run in the top of the sixth inning.  PBR responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning.  Geraets had an RBI fielder’s choice ground ball, Keegan Miller scored on an error, Carter Gullickson had an RBI double, and Hoffman had an RBI single.  Grant Sweeter drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth to score the 13th run to end the game on the 10-run rule.

Gillogly finished with a home run and two RBIs.  Calhoon had a home run and RBI.  Hoffman finished with three hits, including a triple and double, and four RBIs.  Hanson and Gullickson both had a double and RBI.  Geraets had a hit with two RBIs in the game.  Miller had two hits, and Tanner Solberg had a hit.  David Kirby pitched six innings allowing three runs, two earned, on three hits with four walks and six strikeouts.  Jake Rechtenbaugh pitched two innings allowing two hits and had three strikeouts.

Dell Rapids Mudcats Post Three Wins in the Week

The Dell Rapids Mudcats got three more wins over the last week.  They defeated Salem 15-0 on Sunday, June 6th.  On Tuesday, June 8th, the Mudcats got a come-from-behind 5-4 win over Renner.  They closed out the week with a 5-1 win in Lennox on Thursday, June 10th.

The Mudcats pounded out 14 hits against Salem while holding Salem to just one in the 15-0 win in five innings.

Ty Hoglund had three hits and two RBIs.  Chad Hunt had two hits and two RBIs.  Jimmy Bauer and Dalton Allen both had two hits and an RBI.  Dalton Lehnen had a two-run home run.  Travis Peters had a hit and two RBIs.  Josh Roemen had a hit and an RBI.  Nate Henry and Logan Stone both had a double.  Kris Regas pitched all five innings allowing just the one hit and had 10 strikeouts.

The Mudcats trailed Renner 4-3 heading into the eighth inning on Tuesday.  They tied the game on an RBI double by Roemen in the eighth, and then Hunt laid down a suicide squeeze bunt scoring Trevor Freudenthal from third for the game-winner.

Freudenthal and Regas both had two hits in the game.  Grant Olson, Lehnen, Roemen, and Hunt all had hits as well.  Mark Abrahamson pitched eight innings giving up four runs on two hits with five strikeouts.  Hunt pitched a scoreless top of the ninth to pick up the win.

The Mudcats built a 4-0 lead after four innings of play.  Dell Rapids got a run in the first inning when Hoglund scored on an RBI single by Bauer.  They added three more runs in the fourth on doubles by Bauer, Freudenthal, and Allen.  Lennox got their lone run in the bottom of the eighth inning, but Dell Rapids got that run back in the top of the ninth on an RBI sacrifice fly by Roemen.

Bauer and Freudenthal both had two hits and an RBI.  Allen had a hit and an RBI.  Hoglund finished with two hits, and Lehnen also had a hit.  Allen pitched seven innings allowing no runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts t earn the win.  John Spaeth pitched two innings giving up a run on three hits with two strikeouts.

The Mudcats will travel to Humboldt to play the Wood Ducks on Sunday, June 13th.

Dell Rapids 14U Records Two More Big Wins

The Dell Rapids 14U teener team recorded two more big wins on back-to-back nights.  Dell Rapids defeated West Central Royals 14U 18-3 on Wednesday, June 9th at Volunteer Field in Dell Rapids.  They followed that with an 16-0 win over Tea White 14U on Thursday, June 10th in Tea.

West Central had a 1-0 lead after the first inning.  Dell Rapids scored four times in the bottom of the second on an RBI fielder’s choice by Tad Tjaden, RBI single by Cole Ruesink, and two runs by errors.  After West Central scored two times in the top of the third to pull within in a run a 4-3, Dell Rapids added five runs in the bottom of the third, and then nine more in the bottom of the fourth to end the game on the 15-run rule.

Matthew Nelson had a two-run home run in the fourth inning.  Ruesink finished with two hits and two RBIs.  Talan Millage and Brandon Schmidt both had two hits and an RBI.  Kenny Swanson had a hit with two RBIs.  Quinn Carr also had a hit.  Cooper Frost and two RBIs.  Tjaden, Noah Larson, Connor Hanson, Tristan Welch, and Nick Snyder all had an RBI.  Carr pitched two innings giving up three earned runs on four hits with six strikeouts.  Frost pitched two innings allowing a hit and two walks while striking out four batters.

Dell Rapids’ offense stayed hot as they scored in every inning the 16-0 win over Tea on Thursday.  Dell Rapids scored three runs in the first, nine runs in the second, and four more in the third before the game was called after the third inning.  Nine different players had a hit in the game for Dell Rapids.

Nelson had a three-run home run in the second inning for his second home run on back-to-back nights.  Lincoln Fersdahl had two hits and an RBI.  Grady Lamer had a hit with two RBIs.  Ruesink and Millage both had a hit and an RBI.  Carr, Larson, Frost, and Ethan Vanderwerf all had hits in the game.  Carson Maeschen, Atticus Miles, Carson Crosby, and Swanson all had an RBI.  Tjaden pitched two innings without allowing a hit and had five strikeouts.  Fersdahl pitched the last inning striking out all three batters.

Vermillion Blanks Dell Rapids 16U

Vermillion held Dell Rapids to just two hits and earned a 9-0 win in Vermillion on Tuesday, June 8th.

Vermillion only scored in two innings, but both were big innings.  They got three runs in the bottom of the second inning and then had a six-run bottom of the fourth inning for the win.

Luke Schoolmeester and Ethan Kringen had the only two hits in the game for Dell Rapids.  Braden Fersdahl pitched two innings allowing three earned runs on three hits with three walks and two strikeouts.  Dylan Mathis pitched 1 1/3 innings allowing six runs, all earned, on three hits with one walk and one strikeout.  CJ Smith pitched 1 2/3 innings allowing just one hit while walking one and striking out two.

Quarrier Girls Golf Team Finishes 9th at State

The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls golf team completed their 2021 season at the two-day State A Golf Tournament at Spearfish Canyon Country Club Monday, June 7th and Tuesday, June 8th.

The team finished ninth overall with a two-day total of 838.

Sami Schmidt finished in tie for 26th overall with a total of 196 (98, 98).  Abby Greenhoff finished 38th with a total of 204 (96, 108).  Jayme Schmidt placed 42nd with a 211 (108, 103).  Emma Taubert finished tied for 60th with a two-day score of 227 (116, 111).

Dells 14U Finishes 3rd in I-29 League Tournament

The Dell Rapids 14U team finished third at the I-29 League Tournament in Flandreau held Friday, June 4th through Sunday, June 6th.  Dell Rapids played a total of four games in Flandreau over the three days, finishing 3-1 for the third place finish.

The first game was against Garretson on Friday afternoon.  Dell Rapids had no trouble in the game.  They scored 11 times in just the first inning and ended the game in three innings by a score of 20-2.

Dell Rapids’ second game was Saturday morning.  Dell Rapids used two eight-run innings to defeat Tea Navy 14U 18-6.  Dell Rapids scored two runs in the top of the first inning, but Tea rallied to take a lead by the bottom of the second.  Tea led 3-2 heading into the third inning, but Dell Rapids scored eight times in the third and eight times in the fourth for their second win in the tournament.

Tri-Valley Maroon kept the Dell Rapids offense off-balance Saturday afternoon.  Tri-Valley led 2-0 after the top of the first inning, but Dell Rapids did score three times in the bottom of the first to take a 3-2 lead.  Tri-Valley regained the lead in the top of the third at 5-3, and then added another run in the top of the fourth for a 6-3 advantage.  Dell Rapids was only able to scratch across one run in the bottom of the fifth in the loss.

Despite the loss to Tri-Valley, Dell Rapids qualified for the 3rd/4th place game against West Central Royal.  The two teams combined for 25 runs, and it was Dell Rapids that took the win 14-11.

Dell Rapids scored four times in the top of the first inning and then two more in the top of the second for an early 6-0 lead.  West Central came back with four in the bottom of the second to cut the lead to 6-4.  After a single run by Dell Rapids in the top of the third, West Central scored three more times in the bottom of the inning to tie the game 7-7.  Dell Rapids got one more run in the top of the fourth inning for an 8-7 lead, but West Central again scored three times in their half of the inning for a 10-8 lead.  Dell Rapids took the lead for good in the top of the fifth inning.  They added three runs to pull ahead 11-10.  They scored three more times in the top of the seventh for a 14-10 lead before West Central scored just one run in the bottom of the inning.

Twelve players collected at least one hit over the four games.  Brandon Schmidt had six hits, one double, with eight RBIs.  Cooper Frost had five hits, one a double, and six RBIs.  Cole Ruesink had four hits, one a double, and an RBI.  Talan Millage also had four hits, with one double, and three RBIs.  Kenny Swanson had three hits.  Tad Tjaden finished with three hits, two of them doubles.  Carson Crosby and Ethan Vanderwerf both had two hits and an RBI.  Grady Lamer had two hits and two RBIs.  Lincoln Fersdahl finished with two hits and four RBIs.  Matthew Nelson had a hit and two RBIs.  Quinn Carr also had a hit and an RBI.  Nick Snyder had two RBIs.  Atticus Miles, Carson Maeschen, and Jack Patereson all had an RBI as well.

Ruesink pitched five innings over the games allowing six runs, four earned, on nine hits with six strikeouts and two walks.  Schmidt pitched four innings giving up 10 runs, but only two earned, on three hits with six walks and six strikeouts.  Fersdahl had three innings pitched allowing two runs, neither earned, on one hit with two walks and four strikeouts.  Millage pitched 2 1/3 innings allowing three runs, none earned, on one hit with three walks and two strikeouts.  Crosby finished with two innings pitched allowing one earned run on one hit  with five walks and a strikeout.  Frost had 1 2/3 innings pitched with three earned runs on two hits, two walks, and three strikeouts.  Lamer pitched one inning giving up just one walk.
