Dell Rapids Graduate Captain for SMSU Football

TateBunkers72Southwest Minnesota State University head football coach Cory Sauter announced that four players, two on offense and two on defense, have been named team captains for the 2013 season. The team captains were selected by a vote of the Mustang players.  The offensive team captains selected were senior offensive center Brandon Puffer from Buffalo, MN and junior quarterback Charlie Kern from Belle Plaine, MN.  The defensive team captains named were senior safety Tate Bunkers from Dell Rapids, SD, and junior defensive tackle Jacob Levtzow from Rockham, SD.

SMSU opened up the 2013 season on Saturday, September 7th, against St. Cloud State, losing 35-49.  The Mustangs then defeated MSU-Moorhead in Moorhead 27-20 on Saturday, September 14th.  The Mustangs will host Minot St on Friday, September 20th, at 6:00 p.m.

Milbank-Hardees Cross Country Invitational Results

Quarrier LogoThe Dell Rapids Quarriers girls and boys cross country teams participated in the Hardees Invitational in Milbank on Saturday, September 14th.  The girls team finished fifth with a team score of 85.  Lac Qui Parle Valley, MN won the event with a team score of 20.  Benson/KMS, MN was second with 41 points, Redfield/Doland finished third at 46 points, and Montevideo, MN finished fourth with 73 points.  The boys team finished eighth with 116 points.  Montevideo, MN won the event with 20 points.  Lac Qui Parle Valley, MN was second with 49 points.  Redfield/Doland was third with 74 points, Wahpeton, ND finished fourth with 96 points, and Benson/KMS, MN finished fifth at 96 points.

Cardinals Improve to 2-0

DellRapidsStMaryFootballThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals football team won their home opener on Friday, September 13th, with a 60-32 win over the Castlewood Warriors.  Both teams got off to a slow start offensively in the first quarter, but the scoring picked up in the second and third quarters.

Castlewood scored the first touchdown of the game at the 5:13 mark to take a 6-0 lead.  The Cardinals answered back on a Josh Brown touchdown at the 2:39 mark to give St Mary an 8-6 lead after the first quarter.  The second quarter went back and forth as Castlewood scored two touchdowns, and the Cardinals scored three touchdowns.  St Mary held a 28-20 lead at halftime.

The Warriors scored within the first two minutes of the third quarter to cut the lead to 28-26, but that’s as close as they got.  Dell Rapids St Mary scored the next three touchdowns to jump out to a 52-26 lead.  Castlewood scored one more time in the final minutes of the third quarter to cut the lead to 52-32.  The Cardinals put up the final touchdown of the game within the first two minutes of the fourth quarter on Brown’s sixth touchdown of the game.

Head coach Ross Flemmer said, “I was very proud of how our kids came out and played.  Our offensive and defensive lines did a phonomenal job!  The kids played with a lot of intensity and desire.”

Brown finished the night with 17 carries for 217 yards and six touchdowns.  Ben Bunkers also had 17 carries for 125 yards and a touchdown.  Christian Schnieders also had a rushing touchdown in the game.  Defensively for the Cardinals, Jared Scholten lead the team with six tackles.  Schnieders had 5.5 tackles.  Brown, Bunkers, and Leon Maxwell all had five tackles apiece.  Bunkers and Wes Heinricy each had an interception as well.Dell Rapids St Mary will travel to Rutland to take on Oldham-Ramona-Rutland on Friday, September 20th.

Quarriers Pick Up First Win

DellRapidsFootballLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier football team picked up its first win on Friday, September 13th, over Tea Area 15-0.  The Quarriers led recorded a safety with 7:25 to go in the first quarter, and that was the only scoring by either team in the first half.  Dell Rapids led 2-0 at halftime.  Code Nielsen added a touchdown for Dell Rapids on a 10-yard run with 10:21 to go in the third quarter to extend the lead 8-0.  Brett Nichols scored the final touchdown of the game with 9:00 left in the game on a 36-year touchdown run in the win.

Dell Rapids out-gained the Titans 292-199 in total yards.  The Quarriers had 275 yards of rushing and 17 passing yards.  Riley Schmidt had 18 carries for 113 yards in the game.  Nichols had 12 carries for 107 yards and a touchdown.  Nielsen had 11 carries for 56 yards and a touchdown.  Tanner Solberg went 3-12 passing for 17 yards and two interceptions.  Nielsen had a catch for 12 yards, and Zach White had a catch for eight yards.  Defensively for Dell Rapids, Nichols had six tackles in the game.  Matthew DeNoon, Brock Reinhiller, and Tanner Ljunggren each had five tackles apiece.

Dell Rapids improves to 1-1 on the year.  The Quarriers travel to Milbank on Friday, September 20th.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Quarriers Fall to the Titans in Volleyball Action

Quarrier LogoThe Dell Rapids Quarriers volleyball team lost to the Tea Area Titans on Thursday, September 12th, by scores of 10-25, 25-27, 19-25.  Courtney Wolles finished with three aces in the match.  Maria Nagelhout and Sarah Haak each had eight set assists apiece, while Madie Vietor and Jordan Stone finished the night with seven kills each.  Bailey Munk had 20 digs in the match, and Karlie Leighton added 15 digs.  The Quarriers record falls to 1-5 on the year.  Dell Rapids will host Canton on Tuesday, September 17th, which will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

JV Results

The JV team defeated the Titans 25-23, 25-20.  Emily Boyle led the Quarriers with four aces, four kills and four digs.  Mikalea Stofferahn had five kills, Brittany Kludt had four kills, and Mara Adams finished with six digs.  Brittnay Welbig had two aces and 14 set assists in the math.

C Team

The C team lost in three games 25-23, 23-25, 8-15.  Alyssa Shellum had six kills, while Chloe Solberg had three aces and six set assists.  Alexis Krantz also had six set assists.  Kenzie Gullickson finished with six digs to lead the defense.

Quarrier Golf Team Wins Again!

Quarrier LogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier boys golf team won the 12-team Vermillion Invitational on Thursday, September 12th.  Adam Karst also took first place individually with a round of even par of 72, his best round of the year.  Zach Schroeder finished in 8th place firing a round of 79, Ty Hoglund finished 14th with a round of 81, and Josh Parrott finished with a score of 85.  Mason Schmidt finished the day with an 87, and Devon Weber finished with a round of 88.

The Quarriers will play in the Madison Invite at the Madison Country Club on Monday, September 16th.

Dell Rapids Native Scores Goal in First MNJHL Game

Dell Rapids resident Jamison Bach scored in his first hockey game for the Northern Lights team from Bloomington, MN in the Minnesota Junior Hockey League.  Bach scored with 6:05 to go in the third period to break a 1-1 tie against the Marquette Royales of Michigan in the MNJHL League Showcase.  Northern Lights went on to win the game 3-1.

The MNJHL is Tier III Junior Hockey and is considered a college preparatory league.  Bach is the first resident of Dell Rapids to participate in the league.  This year the Northern Lights team will be goodwill ambassadors at the Olympics in Sochi, Russia, and willl play Russian teams while they are in Russia.

West Central Spoils Home Opener for Quarriers

Quarrier LogoThe West Central Trojans defeated the Dell Rapids Quarriers in volleyball action on Tuesday, September 10th.  The Trojans defeated the Quarriers in straight sets in the first home match of the season for Dell Rapids.

West Central used a run early in the first set to jump out to a lead the Quarriers could not overcome.  West Central won the first set 25-11.  The Trojans again jumped out to a lead early in the second set and led 20-13 before the Quarries tied the set up at 20-20.  The next few points went back and forth until the Trojans rallied for two points to win 27-25.  West Central took that momentum into the third set and took a 10-1 lead, never looking back for the 25-8 set win for the match.

Bailey Munk had two service aces in the match.  Jordan Stone finished with four kills on the night, and Maria Nagelhout had six set assists.  Defensively for Dell Rapids, Maddie Vietor had two blocks, and Karlie Leighton ended the night with seven digs.

Dell Rapids will travel to Tea to take on the Tea Area Titans on Thursday, September 12th.

Dell Rapids Hosts Competitive Cheer Event

Dell Rapids High School hosted the Dell Rapids Cheer Competition on Monday, September 9th.  Seven schools from across the state competed in the competitive cheer portion of the event, and two schools comprising of five dance teams competed in the dance portion of the competition.

Platte/Geddes/Dakota Christian won the Cheer event with a score 310.  Sioux Valley finished second at 302.5.  Dell Rapids St Mary finished third with 285 points.  Dell Rapids was fourth with 259.5 points.  Lake Preston was fifth with 229 points.  Mt. Vernon/Plankington finished sixth with 218.5 points, and Northwestern finished seventh with 207.5 points.

Platte/Geddes/Dakota Christian finished first in the Pom Dance category with a score of 144.5.  Northwestern finished second with a score of 120.5  Platte/Geddes/Dakota Christian also competed in the Hip-Hop division scoring 134 points.  They also competed in the Kick division scoring 140 points.  No other teams competed in those categories.  Northwestern also competed in the Jazz division scoring 112.5 points.  No other teams competed in that division.

Quarrier Golf Team Second in Mitchell

Quarrier LogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier boys golf team placed second at the Parkston Invitational at Lakeview Golf Course in Mitchell on Monday, September 9th.  The Quarriers finished with a team score of 317.  Parkston won the event with a team score of 304.  Mitchell finished third with 321.

Adam Karst finished in fifth place individually with a round of 75.  Ty Hoglund finished in seventh with a score of 79, and Zach Schroeder finished eighth finishing the day with an 80.  Devon Weber scored a round of 83, Mason Schmidt shot an 85 on the day.

The Quarriers will be in Vermillion on Thursday, September 12th, for their next tournament.
