Southwest Minnesota State University head football coach Cory Sauter announced that four players, two on offense and two on defense, have been named team captains for the 2013 season. The team captains were selected by a vote of the Mustang players. The offensive team captains selected were senior offensive center Brandon Puffer from Buffalo, MN and junior quarterback Charlie Kern from Belle Plaine, MN. The defensive team captains named were senior safety Tate Bunkers from Dell Rapids, SD, and junior defensive tackle Jacob Levtzow from Rockham, SD.
SMSU opened up the 2013 season on Saturday, September 7th, against St. Cloud State, losing 35-49. The Mustangs then defeated MSU-Moorhead in Moorhead 27-20 on Saturday, September 14th. The Mustangs will host Minot St on Friday, September 20th, at 6:00 p.m.
