Elkton-Lake Benton Holds on Against Cardinals

DRSMvsELB_FB_10-7-17On a Saturday afternoon game at the Sanford Jackrabbits Sports Complex in Brookings, the Elkton-Lake Benton Elks held on for a 24-14 win over the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals.

The defenses held strong in the first quarter as neither team could find the end zone.  The Elks put a drive together late in the first quarter and scored with 11:16 to go in the second quarter.  Devin Sopko scored on a four-yard run to give the Elks a 6-0 lead.  Elkton-Lake Benton scored again late in the second quarter.  Blaine Hefti threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Bryson Sik to give the Elks a 12-0 lead at halftime.

The St Mary Cardinals scored on their first drive of the third quarter.  Eli Longville scored on a one-yard quarterback sneak with 8:52 to go in the third quarter.  Luke Brown threw a halfback pass to Weston Geraets for the two point conversion, and the Cardinals cut the lead to 12-8.  The Elks were able to push their lead to 10 points after scoring on the very first play of the fourth quarter.  Hefti connected with Sik again, this time for an 18-yard touchdown with 11:53 to go in the game to give the Elks an 18-8 lead.  The Elks scored three and a half minutes later on a one-yard run by Hefti with 8:23 to go to push the lead to 24-8.  St Mary scored again with 3:52 remaining in the game when Longville threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Geraets.  The two-point conversion was no good, and the Cardinals trailed 24-14.  St Mary was able to get the ball back with just over 2:00 to play, but an interception by Taryn Krog sealed the win for the Elks.

St Mary (1-6) will close out their regular season on the road in Rutland.  The Cardinals will face the Oldham-Ramona/Rutland Raiders on Friday, October 13th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Quarriers Win Sixth in a Row

DRvsMilbank_FB_10-6-17The Dell Rapids Quarriers won their sixth straight game after a 42-21 win over the Milbank Bulldogs on Friday, October 6th, at Dell Rapids High School.

The Bulldogs scored first with 6:58 to go in the first quarter.  Mitch Quade connected with Max McCulloch on 25-yard touchdown pass.  The extra point was no good, and Milbank led 6-0.  Dell Rapids scored the next three touchdowns in the game.  Nick Boever scored on a three-yard run, and Hunter Garry made the extra point to give Dell Rapids a 7-6 lead with 3:15 to go in the first quarter.  Seth Spielmann scored the next two touchdowns on runs of six yards and three yards.  Dell Rapids led 21-6 with 4:16 left in the first half.

The Bulldogs scored two times before the half to tie the game at 21-21.  Quade threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to James Weber with 3:02 remaining.  Jacob Karges then had a one-yard touchdown run with :16 to go in the half to tie the game.

Dell Rapids scored the only three touchdowns of the second half on their way to the victory.  Boever had a 47-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.  Boever then scored his third touchdown with 10:30 to go in the game on a 20-yard run.  Spielmann scored his third touchdown of the game with 3:38 left in the game on a 25 yard run.

The Quarriers finished with 469 yards of total offense.  They had 283 rushing yards and 186 passing yards.  Carson Rentz was 6-9 passing for 186 yards.  Matt Gillogly had one catch for 78 yards.  Boever had three catches for 56 yards.  Blake Reider had a catch for 27 yards, and Jeffrey Schuch had a catch for 25 yards.  Boever finished with 16 carries for 156 yards and three touchdowns.  Spielmann had 15 carries for 81 yards and three touchdowns.  Defensively for Dell Rapids, Schuch finished the game with 10 tackles.  Eddie Price and nine tackles.  Boever, Josh Heinemann, and Andrew Hegge all had six tackles.  Cole Van Duyn had five tackles.  Logan Heim had a sack, and Logan Ellingson had an interception.

Dell Rapids (6-1) will host Flandreau on Friday, October 13th.  This will be the final regular season home game for the Quarriers and will be Senior Night.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Volleyball Wins Thriller Over Estelline

DRSMvsEstelline_VB_10-5-17The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals won a thrilling five-set match against the Estelline Redmen on Thursday, October 5th, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.  The Cardinals won by set scores of 24-26, 25-21, 13-25, 25-18, 16-14.

After the being tied 2-2 in the first set, Estelline went on a 9-0 run to take an 11-2 lead.  The Cardinals were able to tie the match again at 23-23 and 24-24, but Estelline was able to come away with the win.

The Cardinals bounced back in the second set and took at 14-9 lead.  Estelline fought back to pull within a point at 16-15, but St Mary pulled away to tie the match at 1-1.  The third set started close with Estelline taking a slight 8-6 lead.  The Redmen then went on to close out the set on a 17-7 run to take a 2-1 lead.

The fourth set was close throughout most of the set.  Each team held small leads with St Mary holding a one-point advantage at 15-14.  The Cardinals then closed out the fourth set on a 10-4 run to even the match at 2-2 to force the fifth set.

The final set was back and forth.  The two teams were tied at 4-4, 7-7, and 9-9.  Estelline then rallied for four straight points to take a 13-9 lead.  The Cardinals answered with a 5-0 run to take a 14-13 lead.  Estelline tied the set at 14-14, but St Mary finished the win on kills by Cassy Geraets and Cassie Mullaney.

Mullaney finished with 10 kills and two ace serves.  Ella Heinitz had eight kills, one dig, and two ace serves.  Geraets had one kill, one block, five digs, four ace serves, and 33 set assists.  Rhiannon Glazier had seven kills, and Maddie Schwebach had five kills and two blocks.  Adyn Heinricy had 16 digs and two ace serves.

The Cardinals (8-13) will travel to Hendricks, MN on Tuesday, October 10th.

Quarrier Girls 4th, Boys 7th at Dak 12 Cross Country Meet

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier girls cross country team finished 4th while the boys team finished 7th at the Dak-12 Conference Meet on Thursday, October 5th, at the Canton Golf Course.

The girls finished with a team score of 62.  Sioux Falls Christian won the girls team title with 32 points.  Lennox was 2nd with 34 points, and Vermillion placed 3rd with 42 points.  The boys team finished with 137 points.  West Central won the boys title with 20 points.  Sioux Falls Christian was 2nd with 30 points, and Lennox with 50 points.

The Quarriers will be at the regional meet on Thursday, October 12th, in Volga.

Five Cardinal Runners Medal at DVC Meet

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal Cross Country team ran in the Dakota Valley Conference meet on Wednesday, October 4th, in De Smet.  The Cardinal boys team finished 2nd with a total of 25 points.  Oldham-Ramona/Rutland placed first as a team with 24 points.

Five runners for the Cardinals placed in the top 20.  Connor Libis placed 3rd.  Jacob Vogel was right behind in 4th place.  Thomas Eining placed 18th.  Ella Heinitz placed 4th for the girls.  Catherine Vogel finished 18th.  Other runners on the day were Ryan Eining (21st), Seth Roemen (23rd), and Sam Palmer (33rd).  Ella Griffin placed 3rd in the girls JV race.

St Mary will run in the regional meet on Wednesday, October 11th, at the Irene Golf Course.

Quarrier Volleyball Bounces Back in Vermillion

NewDRLogoIn their second straight day of traveling, the Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team defeated the Vermillion Tanagers 3-1 on Tuesday, October 3rd, in Vermillion.  Dell Rapids won by scores of 21-25, 25-19, 26-24, 27-25.

Trinity Gordon finished the night with 17 kills and 29 digs.  Brooke Klein had 43 digs and two ace serves.  Hannah Fletcher tallied 21 digs, 43 set assists, and two kills.  Jayda Knuppe had 11 kills and eight digs.  Mackenzie Grisham finished the match with 23 digs, three kills, and one block.  Maria Jackson had 10 digs and seven kills, and Sydney Stofferahn added eight kills and a block.

Head coach Jessica Ahlers said, “These last two games were mentally and physically tough for the team.  Traveling such a long distance back to back was hard on the girls, and it affected our game play.  It will be nice to have a break to regroup and focus on the upcoming games.”

Dell Rapids (14-5) will play in Baltic on Monday, October 9th.

Schmidt Finishes 9th, Quarriers 11th, at State Golf Tourney

SchmidtGolf2017Mason Schmidt finished tied for 9th at the 2017 State A Golf Tournament with a two-day total of 166.  Schmidt had a round of 82 on the first day and an 84 in the final day.

The Dell Rapids team finished 11th with a team score of 793.  Aberdeen Roncalli won the team title with 649.  Dakota Valley finished second with 674, and Sisseton placed third with 702.

Zach McKee finished the tournament with a total of 200.  McKee had an opening around of 101 and a second round of 99.  Karsen Welbig had a total of 208.  Welbig’s opening round was 102 and final round was 106.  Brandon Kubly had a total of 219.  Kubly had an opening round of 109 and a final round of 110.

Lucas Schaefbauer of Aberdeen Roncalli placed first individually with a two-day total of 149.  Kobly Newborg of Tea Area was second with 154, and Jacob Lee from Parkston was third with 155.

The tournament was held at Dakota Dunes.

Cardinals Fall to Freeman at Home

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals fell in straight sets to the Freeman Flyers on Monday, October 2nd, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.  Freeman won by set scores of 25-21, 25-21, 25-20.

Cassie Mullaney had six kills and five blocks.  Maddie Schwebach had four kills and two blocks.  Ella Heinitiz and Rhiannon Glazier both had three kills.  Cassy Geraets finished with 18 set assists, four digs and two blocks.  Adyn Heinricy had 16 digs defensively for St Mary.

St Mary, 7-13 on the season, will host Estelline on Thursday, October 5th.  The match can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Volleyball Falls to Dakota Valley

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarriers made the first of two long trips south on I-29 on Monday, October 2nd.  The Dakota Valley Panthers defeated the Quarriers in straight sets by scores of 25-13, 25-5, 25-16.

Trinity Gordon led the team with six kills and 10 digs in the match.  Maria Jackson finished with five kills and four digs.  Sidney Stofferahn added two kills and two blocks. Hannah Fletcher had 12 set assists and eight digs.

Dell Rapids, 13-5 on the season, heads south again on Tuesday, October 3rd.  The Quarriers will be in Vermillion to take on the Tanagers.

2017 State A Boys Golf

WelbigHoleInOneThe Dell Rapids Quarriers finished the first day of the 2017 State A Boys Golf Tournament on Monday, October 2nd, at Dakota Dunes.

Dell Rapids is currently in 13th place as a team with a team score of 394.  Dakota Valley leads after the first day with a team score of 320.  Aberdeen Roncalli is second with 321, and Sisseton is third with 335.

Mason Schmidt is currently tied for 14th place individually with a +10 round of 82.  Zach McKee finished the first day with a round of 101.  Karsen Welbig had a round of 102, and Brandon Kubly finished with a round of 109.  Lucas Schaefbauer of Aberdeen Roncalli leads after the first day with an even par round of 72.  Kolby Newborg of Tea Area is second with a 76, and Brock Murphy of Tea Area is third with a 77.

During the practice round for Dell Rapids held on Sunday, Welbig had a thrill as he hit a hole-in-one on the par 3 14th hole.

The Quarriers will conclude the tournament with the final round tomorrow.
