Dell Rapids Softball 2nd at JV State B Tournament

The Dell Rapids softball team finished 2nd at the 2017 South Dakota JV State B tournament held Saturday, September 30th through Sunday, October 1st in Sioux Falls.  Fourteen teams competed the tournament.

Dell Rapids played four games on the first day of the tournament.  Their first game was a 15-7 win over Sturgis.  The girls rallied in their second game against Watertown.  After falling behind 8-0, Dell Rapids earned a 16-13 come-from-behind win to advance in the tournament.  Dell Rapids kept the momentum rolling and won their third straight game, this time an 11-5 win over Garretson.  Dell Rapids was handed their first loss in their last game of the day against Madison by a score of 8-2.

After a two-hour rain delay to start the day on Sunday, Dell Rapids won their first game of the day against Pierre by a score of 10-2.  The win sent Dell Rapids to the Championship game for a rematch with Madison.  Madison, however, defeated Dell Rapids again, this time 9-2, to give Dell Rapids the second place finish.

Dell Rapids scored a total of 56 run on 57 hits in the tournament.  The hit total included three doubles, five triples, and four home runs.  The team also took at total of 35 walks in their six games.

Some of the offensively leaders for Dell Rapids included Hannah Heiberger who hit two home runs against Garretson.  Elly Schultz also hit a home run against Garretson.  Maddy Wilber had a home run against Watertown.  Rhaegyn Peterson and Cora Alderson both had nine hits each for the tournament and also led the team in on base percentage.

Kyra Wajer pitched all but three innings of the tournament for Dell Rapids.

Quarrier Football Dominates Tea in Win

The Dell Rapids Quarriers dominated every aspect of the game in a 21-6 win over the Tea Area Titans on Friday, September 29th, at Tea.  Dell Rapids scored 21 straight points before Tea Area scored the final touchdown of the game with 7:57 remaining on the clock.

Matt Gillogly got the Quarriers on the scoreboard with 4:34 to go in the first quarter on a one-yard run.  Hunter Garry made the extra point to end a 14-play, 73-yard drive.  Dell Rapids added another score right before halftime.  Seth Spielmann scored on a three-yard run with 2:32 to go in the half with Garry connecting on another extra point.  Dell Rapids led 14-0 at halftime.  Neither team scored in the third quarter, but the Quarriers struck again in the fourth.  Carson Rentz connected with Jeffrey Schuch on a 12-yard pass with 8:09 to go in the game.  Garry made the extra point to push the Quarriers lead to 21-0.  Carter Slykhuis returned the ensuing kickoff 72 yards for a touchdown for the only score for the Titans.

Dell Rapids had the ball for 37:01 in the game while picking up 16 first downs.  Tea Area had the ball for only 10:59 minutes and only got four first downs.  The Quarriers ran 72 offensive plays for a total of 284 yards while holding the Titans to just 26 offensive plays for 109 total yards.

Gillogly had 21 carries for 87 yards and a touchdown.  Nick Boever had 20 carries for 87 yards.  Spielmann had 12 carries for 73 yards and a touchdown.  Rentz was 1-6 passing for 12 yards and a touchdown.  Andrew Hegge and Gillogly both finished with four tackles.  Cole Van Duyn, Zeb Schumaker, Eddie Price, and Schuch all had three tackles in the game.  Boever and Hegge both had a sack in the game.

Dell Rapids, 5-1, will host Milbank Area on Friday, October 6th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Football Team Falls to Dolphins on Senior Night

DRSMvsDeu_FB_9-29-17On the final home game at Rickeman Field, the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals fell to the Deubrook Area Dolphins 28-0 on Friday, September 29th.  Prior to the game, seniors Seth Bares, Luke Brown, Jason Cook, Tyler Munkvold, Tate Hansen, and Logan Gaspar were recognized.

Deubrook Area scored a touchdown in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead.  The Dolphins would add two more scores in the second quarter and took a 21-0 lead into halftime.  The final score of the game for Deubrook Area game in the third quarter.

St Mary was held to just 189 total yards in the game where were all rushing yards.  Deubrook Area had 272 rushing yards along with 37 passing yards in the game.  Weston Geraets had 21 carries for 110 yards in the game.  Connor Libis finished also finished with 21 carriers for 76 yards.  Geraets also led the team defensively with 9.5 tackles.  Eli Longville had 8.5 tackles.  Ethan Geraets had 7 tackles.  Max Herber had 6.5 tackles, and Libis had 3.5 tackles and an interception.

The Cardinals (1-5) will play Elkton-Lake Benton on Saturday, October 7th at 2:30 p.m. in Brookings.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Cross Country at Lennox Invite

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier cross country teams participated in the Lennox Cross Country Invite on Friday, September 29th at the LenKota Golf Course in Lennox.

The Dell Rapids girls team finished fourth with 84 points.  Sioux Falls Christian won the girls title with 41 points.  Beresford was second with 48 points, and Lennox placed third with 55 points.

The Quarrier boys finished 10th as a team with 191 points.  George-Little Rock-Central Lyon, IA won the boys title with 37 points.  West Central was second with 40 points, and Sioux Falls Christian was third with 41 points.

Dell Rapids will be in Canton on Thursday, October 5th, for the Dak XII Conference meet.

Elks Stay Hot with Win over Cardinals

DRSMvsELB_VB_9-28-17The Elkton-Lake Benton Elks won their ninth match out of their last ten after defeating the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals in straight sets on Thursday, September 29th, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.  Elkton-Lake Benton won by scores of 25-9, 25-17, 25-13.

Maddie Schwebach and Cassie Mullaney both had three kills in the match.  Rhiannon Glazier and Veronica Beck both had two kills.  Adyn Heinricy had three digs.  Carly Maxwell finished with two digs.  Mullaney and Beck were both credited with a block.  Ella Heinitz had 11 set assists.  The Elks were led by Hannah Krog with 18 kills, Karlie Christensen with 10 digs, and Callie Otkin with 40 set assists.

St Mary falls to 7-12 on the year.  The Cardinals will host Freeman on Monday, October 2nd.

Quarrier Volleyball Beats Lennox in Straight Sets

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team defeated the Lennox Orioles in straight sets on Thursday, September 28th, at Dell Rapids High School.  Dell Rapids won by scores of 25-21, 25-15, 25-20.

Hannah Fletcher finished the match with 28 set assists, 10 digs, and six kills.  Trinity Gordon had 18 digs, 16 service points, eight kills, five aces, and one block.  Jayda Knuppe added eight kills and a block.  Sydney Stofferahn had five kills and four blocks.  Maria Jackson finished the night with six kills and six service points, and Brooke Klein had 20 digs and five service points.

Dell Rapids (13-4) will face a tough road schedule in back-to-back games early next week.  The Quarriers travel to Dakota Valley on Monday, October 2nd, and then follow that with a trip to Vermillion on Tuesday, October 3rd.

Cardinal Cross Country Team Competes at Colman-Egan

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal cross country team competed at Colman-Egan Cross Country Meet on Wednesday, September 27th.

The Cardinal boys team finished fourth with a team score of 43.  Oldham-Ramona/Rutland placed first with 17 points.  Elkton-Lake Benton was second with 20 points, and Flandreau Indian School was third with 30 points.  The Cardinal girls team did not have a team score with only two varsity runners participating.  Deubrook Area placed first in the girls team standings with nine points.  Mt Vernon/Plankinton was second with 24 points, and Howard was third with 31 points.

St Mary will be at the Dakota Valley Conference meet on Wednesday, October 4th, in White.

Quarrier Volleyball Wins Thriller Over MCM

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarriers won an exciting five-set match over the McCook Central/Montrose Cougars on Tuesday, September 26th, in Salem.  Dell Rapids won by set scores of 22-25, 26-24, 18-25, 25-17, 15-13.

Head coach Jessica Ahlers said, “This is the first match that has gone to 5 sets for us, so it was a good test to see if the team could push through both physically and mentally. Overall the girls played a great game and performed well, but I would like to see them more consistent throughout the sets, especially heading into the later part of the season.”

Maria Jackson had 16 kills on the night.  Jayda Knuppe added 10 kills.  Trinity Gordon had seven kills, and Sydney Stofferahn had six kills.  Stofferahn also had four blocks.  Knuppe and Mackenzie Grisham both had a block.  Brooke Klein finished with 39 digs in the match.  Gordon had 27 digs.  Grisham added 20 digs, Hannah Fletcher had 12 digs, and Jackson had nine digs.  Fletcher had 37 set assists in the match.

Dell Rapids (12-4) will host Lennox on Thursday, September 28th.

Baltic Defeats St Mary in Volleyball Action

DRSM LogoThe Baltic Bulldogs defeated the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals on Tuesday, September 26th, in straight sets by scores of 25-14, 25-14, 25-17.

Cassie Mullaney had five kills for the Cardinals.  Maddie Schwebach added four kills, and Veronica Beck had three kills.  Mullaney also had three blocks, two ace serves, and one dig.  Adyn Heinricy and Rhiannon Glazier both had nine digs.  Cassy Geraets had 17 set assists in the match.

Baltic was led by Carrington Entringer with 10 kills.  Nikya Owns had six kills, and Madalynn Wirkus had four kills. Shelby Dosch had eight ace serves.  Jayda Tidemann had eight digs.  Dosch and Brooke VanDam had nine set assists.

St Mary (7-11) will host Elkton-Lake Benton on Thursday, September 28th.  The match can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Four Quarrier Golfers Qualify for State Tournament

NewDRLogoFour Dell Rapids Quarrier boys golfers will be going to the 2017 State A Golf Tournament in Dakota Dunes on Monday, October 2nd through Tuesday, October 3rd.  Mason Schmidt, Zach McKee, Brandon Kubly, and Karsen Welbig all qualified after their rounds at the Region 1A Tournament at Rocky Run Golf Course on Monday, September 25th.

The Quarrier team finished fifth with a total score of 367.  Aberdeen Roncalli placed first as a team with a score of 324.  Sisseton was second with 329.  Sioux Valley placed third with 337, and Madison was fourth with 343.  Aberdeen Roncalli, Sisseton, and Sioux Valley had all their golfers qualify for state automatically by being the top three teams at the regional tournament.

The top 29 golfers in the regional tournament also qualified for the state tournament.  Nate Nielsen from Sisseton placed first with a round of 75.  Ramsey Johnsen of Aberdeen Roncalli was second with a 78.  Lucas Schaefbauer of Aberdeen Roncalli was third with a round of 79.

Mason Schmidt placed fourth individually with a round of 81.  Zach McKee finished 22nd with a round of 92.  Brandon Kubly was 24th with a round of 95, and Karsen Welbig was 26th with a round of 99.  Jack Weber finished with a round of 107, which was only six shots from the cut-off to qualify for state.
