Quarrier Volleyball Wins Silver Bracket at Pentagon Tournament

September 24, 2017 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

NewDRLogoOn Saturday, September 23rd, the Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team competed in the Pentagon Volleyball Tournament with 20 other teams. The day started with pool play, where Dell Rapids competed against Western Christian and Rapid City Central.  Dell Rapids lost to Western Christian 11-25, 13-25, which was their only loss of the day.  The Quarriers defeated Rapid City Central 23-25, 25-16, 25-23.

After pool play completed, the Quarriers were placed in the Silver Bracket.  They opened up the bracket play with a tough game against Mt Vernon-Plankinton that resulted in a Quarrier win by scores of 27-25, 25-18.  The day ended with a win against Central Lyon in the championship match 25-20, 27-25.

Brooke Klein finished the day with 63 digs, eight service points, and three kills.  Hannah Fletcher had 31 digs, 22 service points, 14 kills, and 77 set assists.  Jayda Knuppe had 18 kills, 10 digs, 20 service points, and five blocks on the day.  Mackenzie Grisham added 30 digs, 10 kills, and 14 service points.  Maria Jackson had 18 kills, 14 digs, and 17 service points.  Sydney Stofferahn had 12 kills and five blocks.  Trinity Gordon finished with 38 digs, 27 kills, and 13 service points.

Head coach Jessica Ahlers said, “It was great to come in and compete against teams we don’t normally see during the season.  The girls had to adapt to each team and adjust their play in order to be successful. This tournament also provided an opportunity to work on our mental toughness and finding an inner drive to come back when we are behind. During one of the games we were down 10 points (3-13) and were able to chip away at the deficit with hard work, resulting in a win. These are the things we will need to continue to focus on as we move into the tough part of our season.”

The Quarriers (11-4) will travel to McCook Central/Montrose on Tuesday, September 26th.

Fourth Quarter Rally Gives Quarrier Football Victory

September 23, 2017 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

DellRapidsFootballLogoDell Rapids scored 21 points in the final quarter for an exciting come-from-behind win over the Tri-Valley Mustangs on Friday, September 22nd, at Tri-Valley High School.  Tri-Valley led 21-7 heading into the final quarter, but the Quarriers rallied to win their fourth win a row.

Both teams were held scoreless in the opening quarter of the game.  Tri-Valley struck first early in the second quarter.  Noah Jewett scored on a one-yard run to give the Mustangs a 7-0 lead.  After a Nick Boever interception, Dell Rapids scored on an eight-yard pass from Carson Rentz to Jeffrey Schuch with 4:04 to go in the half to tie the game 7-7.  The Mustangs answered with a 58-yard touchdown run with a little over 2:00 to go in the half to regain the lead at 14-7.  Tri-Valley then intercepted a Rentz pass with 1:03 to go in the half.  The Mustangs turned that into another touchdown with seconds left in the half to take a 21-7 halftime lead.

Both teams punted in their opening drive of the third quarter.  Tri-Valley was forced to punt again on their second drive of the third quarter.  The Quarriers drove the ball to the Tri-Valley three yard line on their next drive, but the third quarter ended with neither team scoring.  Tri-Valley still held a 21-7 lead.  Dell Rapids scored on the very first play of the fourth quarter on a three-yard run by Josh Heinemann to cut the Mustang lead to 21-14 with 11:55 to play.  On the next Mustang drive, the Quarriers recovered a backwards pass as a fumble on the Tri-Valley 40 yard line.  Rentz connected with Adam Nagelhout for a 24-yard touchdown with 7:36 to go in the game to tie things at 21-21.  Tri-Valley took their next drive all the way to the Dell Rapids 18 yard line late in the game, but the Quarrier defense held tough to force a turnover on downs with 4:12 remaining in the game.  The Dell Rapids offense drove the field picking up big first downs.  With :23 to go from the Tri-Valley three yard line, Rentz found his way into the endzone to score the go-ahead touchdown with :20 to go in the game.  The Dell Rapids defense held strong in the final seconds to secure the come-from-behind win.

Dell Rapids finished the game with 328 total yards of offense which included 207 yards rushing and 121 yards passing.  Rentz finished 9-15 passing for 121 yards and two touchdowns.  Schuch had four catches for 53 yards and a touchdown.  Nagelhout had a 24-yard touchdown catch.  Seth Spielmann had nine carries for 81 yards, and Matt Gillogly had 15 carries for 70 yards to lead the ground attack for Dell Rapids.  Eddie Price had a team-high eight tackles, while Boever added six tackles and an interception.

Cardinals Fall in Weather-Shortened Game

September 23, 2017 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

DRSMvsCastle_FB_9-22-17The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal football team dropped a 28-0 game to the Castlewood Warriors on Friday, September 22nd, in Castlewood.  The game was called with 6:43 to go in the second quarter due to storms in the area.  It was determined the game would be a final score and will not be resumed.

Both teams got off to a slow start offensively.  Each team’s first possession resulted in three plays and then a punt.  On the Cardinal’s second possessions, they were able to push the ball in to Castlewood territory.  Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the Warrior defense held strong and forced a turnover on downs.  On the very first play for Castlewood after getting the ball, Noah Wiersma scored on a 39-yard run.  The extra point was good, and Castlewood lead 7-0 with 4:48 to play in the first quarter.  After forcing another St Mary punt, Wiersma scored on another big run.  This time Wiersma scored on a 25-yard run.  The extra point was again made, and the Warriors led 14-0 with 1:50 to go in the first quarter.

The Cardinal offense was again able to get into Warrior territory in the second quarter.  However, a fumble after a catch by Logan Gaspar was recovered by the Warriors.  Three plays later Brandon Benike connected with Kaden Eng for a 42-yard touchdown pass with 7:49 to play in the second quarter.  Castlewood led 21-0.  The next drive for St Mary also ended in a turnover.  Kaiden Brandenburger intercepted an Eli Longville pass inside the Cardinal 10 yard line.  Wiersma scored on the next play on an eight-yard run with 6:43 to play.  After the made extra point, the Warriors led 28-0.

It was at that point in the game the coaches and officials held a discussion for about five minutes.  The decision was made to end the game with the approaching storms.

St Mary (1-4) will be at home for their next game on Friday, September 29th.  The Cardinals will host Deubrook Area at Rickeman Field.
