St Mary Cardinals Fall in Volleyball Regular Season Finale

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals had their senior night recognition during the final regular season home match on Monday, October 23rd.  The Cardinals hosted the De Smet Bulldogs in their final match.  De Smet came away with a straight set win by scores of 25-14, 25-19, 25-22.

Maddie Schwebach led the team with six kills on the night.  Cassy Geraets added four kills, while Cassie Mullaney had three kills.  Adyn Heinricy had nine digs and two ace serves.  Ella Heinitz, Geraets, and Carly Maxwell all had two digs each.  Geraets led the team with 18 set assists.

St Mary finishes the regular season with a 10-19 record.

Dell Rapids Wins 5-Set Thriller over Beresford

DRvsBer_VB_10-23-17The Dell Rapids Quarriers came from behind to win a thrilling five-set match over the Beresford Watchdogs on Monday, October 23rd.  It was an exciting win for the Quarriers on senior night.  Dell Rapids won by set scores of 25-27, 18-25, 25-19, 25-22, 15-12.

Dell Rapids held a 24-21 lead in the first set before Beresford rallied to pull off the stunning first set win.  The Watchdogs rode that momentum into the second set to take a 2-0 lead over Dell Rapids.  The Quarriers rallied in the third set to force a fourth.  Dell Rapids was able to hold off Beresford to force the fifth and final set.  The Quarriers jumped out to an 8-3 lead only to see Beresford tie the game at 8-8 moments later.  Dell Rapids was then able to get ahead 12-9 before holding on for the victory.

Brooke Klein finished with 47 digs and an ace in the match.  Hannah Fletcher had 44 set assists, 23 digs, three kills and an ace serve.  Jayda Knuppe had 11 kills, nine digs, two aces and a block.  Maria Jackson added six kills and six digs.  Shelby Apland had three kills and five digs.  Sydney Stofferahn finished with 16 kills.  Trinity Gordon had 50 digs, 17 kills and five aces.  Sam Price had 12 digs, while Dezi Rus had 16 digs.

Dell Rapids end their regular season with an 18-9 record.  The Quarriers finished as the #2 seed in Region 3A and will have an opening round bye in the Region 3A tournament.  Dell Rapids will play on Thursday, November 2nd, at Sioux Falls Christian High School after the Sioux Falls Christian vs #4/#5 winner.  Winners on November 2nd will advance to the Sweet 16.

Cardinal and Quarrier Runners Compete at State

CrossCountry-GenericThe Dell Rapids St Mary Caridnals and Dell Rapids Quarriers sent multiple runners to the 2017 South Dakota State Cross Country meet on Saturday, October 21st, in Rapid City.  Dell Rapids had eight runners participate in state, while St Mary had six runners in the state meet.

The entire St Mary boys team competed and finished 13th with 119 points.  Ipswich won the boys State B title with 29 points.  Freeman Academy/Marion was second with 32 points, and Burke/South Central was third with 39 points.

Connor Libis (39th) finished at 18:34.20.  Jacob Vogel (49th) had a time of 18:53.88.  Ryan Eining (101st) finished in 20:25.32.  Seth Roemen (105th) had a time of 20:35.67.  Thomas Eining (119th) had a time of 21:53.97.

Ella Heinitz placed 21st individually in the girls competition with a time of 21:02.87.

The entire Quarrier girls team also competed in the state meet.  Dell Rapids finished 12th with a total of 227 points.  Hill City won the girls State A title with 33 points.  Custer was second with 64 points, and St Thomas More placed third with 67 points.

Shaylee Hoff (34th) had a time of 20:57.18.  Aspen Hansen (85th) had a time of 22:28.60.  Kathryn Fletcher (86th) finished at 22:29.12.  Katrina Kreul (106th) completed in 23:05.30.  Alli DeStigter (117th) had a time of 24:15.53.  Madysen VanOverbeeke (119th) finished in 24:27.82.

Canyon Lowman and Carter Wynja competed individually for Dell Rapids in the boys race.  Wynja (79th) had a time of 18:48.93.  Lowman (101st) finished in 19:21.20.

Quarriers 3rd, Cardinals 4th at State A Cheer Competition

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier and Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal cheer teams competed at the 2017 South Dakota State A Competitive Cheer competition on Friday, October 20th, at Rapid City Stevens High School.

The Quarriers placed 3rd with a total of 225.5 points.  The Cardinals placed 4th with a DRSM Logototal of 218.0 points.  Sioux Valley won the title with 261.0 points.  Dakota Valley just edged Dell Rapids for 2nd place with 228.5 points.  Arlington/Lake Preston finished 5th followed by Platte-Geddes.

Quarriers Fall to Madison in Football Regular-Season Finale

DRvsMad_FB_10-19-17The 2017 regular season came to an end for the Dell Rapids Quarriers on Thursday, October 19th in Madison.  The Bulldogs ended a seven-game win streak by Dell Rapids with a 38-21 win.

Madison put up two scores in the first quarter.  Josh Giles connected with Jacob Unterbrunner on a 55-yard pass play to give the Bulldogs a 6-0 lead.  Madison struck again when Giles threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Jaxon Janke.  The Bulldogs led 12-0 after the first quarter.

Dell Rapids cut the lead to 12-7 midway through the second quarter.  With 6:55 to go in the half, Matt Gillogly scored on an 11-yard run with the extra point good by Hunter Gerry.  Madison answered just over two minutes later when Giles connected with Jaxon Janke on a 51-yard touchdown pass to push the lead to 18-7.  Dell Rapids would drive deep into Bulldog territory late in the second quarter, but with under a minute to play, Jarrett Lurz intercepted Carson Rentz pass at the goal line to keep the Bulldogs ahead 18-7 at halftime.

Madison scored on their second drive of the second half.  Jadon Janke scored on a 44-yard touchdown run with 7:07 in the third quarter to push the lead to 24-7.  Rentz threw a 19-yard touchdown pass on fourth down to Jeffrey Schuch with 3:59 to play in the third.  Gerry connected again on the extra point, and Dell Rapids trailed 24-14.  Madison would get one more score before the end of the third quarter.  Jadon Janke scored on a 35-yard run with 1:57 left in the quarter to push the lead to 32-14.

The Bulldogs scored first in the fourth quarter.  Girls hit Jaxon Janke on a 39-yard touchdown pass with 6:08 to go in the game to give Madison a 38-14 lead.  Mason Schmidt caught a 26-yard touchdown pass from Rentz with 5:05 to go for the final score of the game.

Dell Rapids had a total of 275 yards of offense, 174 passing yards and 101 rushing yards.  Madison finished with 419 yards of offense, 199 passing yards and 220 rushing yards.  The Quarriers were 4-10 on third down, while Madison was 6-11.

Rentz finished 11-16 passing for 174 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.  Schuch had four catches for 79 yards and a touchdown.  Seth Spielmann had three catches for 45 yards.  Mason Schmidt ended the game with two catches for 30 yards and a touchdown.  Gillogly had 12 carries for 61 yards and a touchdown.  Alex Kringen had one carry for 17 yards.  Nick Boever had six carries for 14 yards.  Spielmann finished with five carries for 10 yards.

Defensively for Dell Rapids, Boever finished the night with eight tackles.  Gillogly, Josh Heinemann, and Eddie Price all had seven tackles.  Andrew Hegge finished with six tackles.  Cole VanDuyn had five tackles, and Logan Ellingson, Blake Reider, and Logan Heim all finished with four tackles each.

Dell Rapids finishes the regular season with a 7-2 record.  The Quarriers will be the #3 seed in the 2017 South Dakota 11A Football Playoffs and will host #6 St Thomas More on Thursday, October 26th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Madison Rallies Past Quarrier Volleyball Team

DRvsMad_VB_10-17-17The third-ranked Madison Bulldogs rallied in the first two sets on their way to a straight set win over the Dell Rapids Quarriers on Tuesday, October 17th at Dell Rapids High School.  Madison won by scores of 25-19, 25-18, 25-11.

Madison got out to a 10-4 lead early in the first set, but after a Dell Rapids time out, the Quarriers went on a 6-1 run to pull within a point at 11-10.  The set stayed close with Madison still holding a one-point lead at 19-18.  The Bulldogs then rallied to close out the first set on a 6-1 run for the win.

The start of the second set was back-and-forth with neither team getting more than a two point lead.  With the second set tied at 7-7, Madison rallied for an 8-2 run to take a 15-9 lead.  Dell Rapids closed the gap slightly to trail 19-14, but Madison again pulled away at the end for the win in the second set.

The Bulldogs then used that momentum to jump out to a 7-1 lead.  They kept rolling to extend the lead to 14-4 and closed out the match with a final set score of 25-11.

Dell Rapids (17-9) will wrap up the regular season on Monday, October 23rd when they host the Beresford Watchdogs on senior night.  The match can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

St Mary Cheer Wins Lake Preston Invite

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal competitive cheer team won the Lake Preston Cheer Invitational on Monday, October 16th.  Other teams competing in the competition were Redfield-Doland, Arlington/Lake Preston, and Deubrook.

St Mary finished with a total of 135.5 points.  Redfield-Doland was second with 131 points.  Deubrook finished third with 127.25 points, and Arlington/Lake Preston finished fourth with 124 points.

The Cardinals will be at the state competition on Friday, October 20th and Saturday, October 21st at Rapid City Stevens High School.

Quarrier Cheer Wins Platte-Geddes Invite

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier competitive cheer team won the Platte-Geddes Invite on Saturday, October 14th at Platte High School.  The Quarriers finished with a score of 270.50 points.  Parkston placed second with 221.00 points.  Platte-Geddes was third with 217.50 points, and Redfield/Doland was fourth with 199.00 points.

Other teams competing in the invite were Dakota Valley, Bon Homme, Rapid City Stevens, Wagner, Winner, Gregory, and Lyman.

The Quarriers will head to the 2017 State A Competitive Cheer Competition which will be held on Friday, October 20th and Saturday, October 21st at Rapid City Stevens High Schoool.

Cardinals 2-2 at DVC Volleyball Tournament

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals volleyball team finished 2-2 at the Dakota Valley Conference Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, October 14th in Elkton.  St Mary played Elkton-Lake Benton and Castlewood in the first round of pool play, and then the Cardinals played Estelline and Oldham-Ramona/Rutland in the Bronze Pool to end the day.

St Mary lost their match against Elkton-Lake Benton by set scores of 25-14, 25-11.  Maddie Schwebach had two kills in the match.  Cassie Mullaney, Rhiannon Glazier, and Veronica Beck all had one kill.  Cassy Geraets had six set assists and one ace serve.  Adyn Heinricy had 11 digs.

The Cardinals also lost to Castlewood by scores of 26-24, 25-7.  Glazier and Beck both had three kills in the match.  Mullaney had two kills, and Ella Heintiz had one kill.  Heinricy had four digs and two ace serves.  Geraets had 11 set assists and an ace.

St Mary then earned two wins in the Bronze Pool.  The Cardinals defeated Estelline by scores of 25-22, 26-24.  Schwebach had six kills.  Mullaney added five kills.  Heinricy led the team with four digs.  Carly Maxwell had three digs.  Geraets had 20 set assists and two ace serves.  St Mary also had a win over Oldham-Ramona/Rutland by scores of 24-26, 25-21, 25-17.  Beck had nine kills and three ace serves.  Glazier had nine kills, six digs, and an ace.  Mullaney finished with eight kills.  Schwebach had six kills.  Heinricy had 17 digs in the match.  Geraets finished with 36 set assists and six digs.

The Cardinals record now stands at 10-17 on the season.  St Mary will travel to Freeman Academy/Marion on Tuesday, October 17th.

Quarrier Volleyball Finishes Fifth at Dak-12 Tourney

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team finished fifth at the Dak-12 Conference Tournament in Madison on Saturday, October 14th.  The Quarriers had matches against Elk Point-Jefferson, Tea Area, and Lennox.

Dell Rapids lost their first match of the day against Elk Point-Jefferson by set scores of 25-22, 25-16.  Sydney Stofferahn had five kills in the match.  Jayda Knuppe had four kills, and Trinity Gordon finished with three.  Brooke Klein had 23 digs, while Gordon had 10 digs.  Hannah Fletcher finished with seven digs and 14 set assists.

The Quarriers rebounded with a straight set win over Tea Area by scores of 25-12, 25-21.  Dell Rapids had a balanced offensive attack against the Titans.  Maria Jackson led the way with six kills.  Stofferahn had five kills, Knuppe added four kills, and Gordon had three kills.  Gordon also had three ace serves and 10 digs.  Klein had 10 digs as well, and Mackenzie Grisham had six digs.  Fletcher had 19 set assists.

Dell Rapids lost the first set to Lennox in the 5th/6th place game by a score of 25-22, but the Quarriers won the next two sets by scores of 25-17, 25-12 to defeat the Orioles.  Stofferahn led the way with nine kills.  Jackson finished with eight kills.  Gordon and Fletcher both had five kills each.  Klein had 20 digs defensively.  Fletcher finished with 13 digs and 21 set assists.  Gordon also had nine digs and an ace serve.

Dell Rapids’ record improves to 17-8 after the tournament.  The Quarriers will host the Madison Bulldogs on Tuesday, October 17th.  The match can be seen on Big Sioux Media.
