10th Street Project to be Fully Complete in 2017

September 26, 2016 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

10thStreetProjectDuring the Dell Rapids City Council’s Regular Meeting on Monday, September 19th, City Administrator Justin Weiland gave an update to the council on the 10th Street project.  Weiland mentioned that work is continuing for the project, and the utility sub-contractor is reporting that utility work should be complete within the next week.  Grading work is also being finished in front of the hospital to reach final grade.

The current plan of the project is to finish everything, including the curb and gutter and paving of the road in front of the hospital over the next couple of weeks.  The rest of the 10th Street project west of the hospital will be to only lay gravel on the street and let it set during the winter.  The curb and gutter, sidewalk, and paving will all occur in the spring of 2017.  After the utility work is complete and the gravel is in place on 10th Street, the street will be open throughout the winter months.

Little Free Library in Dell Rapids

September 13, 2016 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Two of Wayne and Sherry Petrik's grandchildren - Anayah Turner and Caelee LeBrun - are pictured utilizing the new Little Free Library.

Two of Wayne and Sherry Petrik’s grandchildren – Anayah Turner and Caelee LeBrun – are pictured utilizing the new Little Free Library.

By Jacque LeBrun:  There has recently been a new feature added to Dell Rapids.  It is a Little Free Library and can be found in front of the home of Wayne and Sherry Petrik.  A Little Free Library is a “take a book, return a book” free book exchange.

Wayne and Sherry Petrik celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary this year and as their children thought about what to do for them, it seemed fitting to give them a gift that would continue giving to the residents of the Dell Rapids area for years to come.  Wayne and Sherry are both humble people and often have their children and grandchildren give to others rather than buying something for them at holidays and birthdays.  The Petriks are invested in the community and have a big heart for the youth, so they were excited about the idea of setting up a library in their honor.   Wayne, being the creative handy man he is, jumped on the opportunity to make the library himself.

A Little Free Library is a “take a book, return book” free book exchange.  Anyone can participate by taking a book or bringing one to share.  It’s a great way to give a good book a new home while getting a new read for yourself.

The Little Free Library can be found in front of their home at 706 E. 5th Street in Dell Rapids.  If you are interested in starting up a little free library yourself, visit Littlefreelibrary.org.  Come and enjoy a “new” read.

Dells Theater Helps Make Dream Come True

September 9, 2016 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

phoenyxbenson_3A Sioux Falls five-year-old was presented with a specially-designed bicycle at the Dell Rapids Theater on Thursday, September 8th, thanks to fundraising efforts led by Variety, a children’s charity.

Phoenyx Benson is living with a significant brain injury and is unable to ride a traditional bicycle.  Variety has led fundraising efforts to have a specially-designed bicycle given to Phoenyx to allow her the joys of having her very own bike to ride.

Dell Rapids Theater owner, Jeff Logan and Logan Theaters chain, have been big supporters of the Variety children’s charity.  They have sold limited edition gold pins from Variety’s Gold Heart Campaign to help raise money for the charity.  All the monies raised in South Dakota stay in South Dakota to help locally.  This year’s pin featured artwork from the “Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2” movie.  The previous pin featured artwork of the minions from “Despicable Me”.

mockingjay-pin“They are like collector’s pieces.  They tie in with a different movie, and we have support from the studios that they donate the license to use the artwork.  They are able to use a special pin to make it more popular,” Logan said.phoenyxbenson_1

Variety was initially founded in 1927 by a group of 11 theater owners and showmen in Pittsburgh, PA as a social club.  The so-named Variety Club evolved into a charity during 1928.  Today Variety has a network of 42 offices in 13 countries operating as a children’s charity.

After receiving the bicycle, Phoenyx took a ride around the lobby of the theater and posed for pictures with her mother Emily Bartscher and everyone that helped make the bicycle possible.  The specially-designed bicycle was made by Chad Pickard the owner of Spoke-N-Sport bike shop.
