Cardinal Cross Country Teams Both Finish Fourth at DVC Meet

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys and girls cross country teams both finished fourth at the Dakota Valley Conference meet on Wednesday, October 5th in White.

The girls team finished with 46 points.  Arlington won the girls team title with 11 points.  Colman-Egan was second with 25 points, and De Smet finished third with 30 points.

Cami Wolles finished 10th with a time of 23:25.40.  Lucy Vargas was 18th in a time of 23:57.40.  Addy Gilberet had a 20th place finish  in 24:04.90.  Sierra Klein (26th) had a time of 25:16.02.  Madison Reiff (28th) finished  in 25:47.93.

The boys team had a total of 44 points.  Elkton-Lake Benton won the boys title with seven points.  Deubrook Area was second with 20 points, and Arlington placed third with 25 points.

Noah Reiff was 11th with a time of 20:07.53.  Seth Roemen placed 15th in a time of 20:37.00.  Owen Vargas was 18th with a time of 20:59.28.  Gabe Nelson (31st) finished with a time of 25:07.81.

St Mary will host the Region 2B meet on Wednesday, October 13th.

Cardinals Fall to Tough Garretson Team

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals hosted the #3 team in Class A, the Garretson Blue Dragons, on Tuesday, October 5th.

Garretson got on a roll early in the first set and continued it throughout the match.  With the score tied 1-1 in the opening set, the Blue Dragons scored seven in a row for an 8-1 lead.  They continued to roll from there winning the first set 25-9.  The momentum stayed with Garretson the entire match as they won the next two 25-14 and 25-14.

Brianna Lindeman had four ace serves, five set assists, and five digs on the night.  Courtney Brown had three kills, one ace, one block, and five digs.  Ella Griffin added three kills, one ace serve, and one set assist.  Madala Hanson had five digs and two set assists.  Maya Heinitz finished with five digs, Josie Baumberger had four, and Whitney Warwick had three.  Brianna Griffin had two kills.

St Mary will host Estelline/Hendricks on Thursday, October 7th.

St Mary Falls to Castlewood in Road Volleyball Match

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team fell to the Castlewood Warriors on the road on Monday, October 4th.  The Warriors won in straight sets by scores of 25-21, 27-25, and 25-12.  The Warriors rallied in the second set after trailing late to win and carried the momentum into the third set win.

Courtney Brown finished with nine kills and 19 digs.  Maya Heinitz added four kills, 14 digs, and two ace serves.  Ella Griffin also had four kills along with six set assists, two digs, and an ace serve.  Addy Gilbert finished with three kills and three digs.  Brianna Lindeman had five kills, seven set assists, and two ace serves.  Jacey Tebay had six ace serves.  Madala Hanson tallied seven set assists.  Whitney Warwick finished with seven digs, and Josie Baumberger had five digs.

The Cardinals will host Garretson on Tuesday, October 5th and then Estelline/Hendricks on Thursday, October 7th.

Cardinals Strong in All Phases in Win over Redhawks

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals was strong in all aspects of the game in a 52-0 over the Estelline/Hendricks Redhawks on Saturday, October 2nd.  The Cardinals scored on every offensive possession, and the defense held the Redhawks to just 15 yards of total offense.

St Mary scored two times in the first quarter.  Nic Gaspar scored on an 18-yard run with 6:20 to go in the quarter.  CJ Smith had a 52-yard touchdown pass to Ty Brown with 3:56 in the quarter, and the Cardinals led 14-0 at the first quarter break.

The Cardinals then scored four more touchdowns in the second quarter.  Gaspar had a 37-yard touchdown run with 10:56 to go.  Brown followed with a 22 yard touchdown run at the midway point of the second quarter.  Lucas Flemmer added a touchdown at thee 2:36 mark on a 32-yard run.  Anthony Geraets got a three-yard touchdown run with only :36 left in the half.  St Mary converted on all four two-point conversion attempts as well for a 46-0 halftime lead.

The game came to an end after the first St Mary offense possession of the second half.  Camden Gilbert got the final score of the game on a one-yard run with 4:41 left in the third quarter.

St Mary finished with 346 yards of total offense, 279 rushing yards and 67 passing yards.  Flemmer had 11 carries for 82 yards and a touchdown.  Gaspar had five carries for 76 yards and two touchdowns.  Brown finished with six carries for 71 yards and a touchdown.  Gilbert had 29 rushing yards with a touchdown, and Geraets had 17 yards and a touchdown.

Smith was 1-2 passing for 52 yards and a touchdown.  Owen Vargas was 1-1 passing for 16 yards.  Brown had the 52-yard touchdown catch.  Gilbert had the 16-yard reception from Vargas.

Noah Olund led the team in tackles with 6.5.  Gabe Lindeman and John Pica both had three tackles.  Brown also had three tackles and an interception.  Gaspar had a sack, forced fumble, and fumble recovery.

Head coach Ross Flemmer said, “I felt our offensive line did a good job opening holes, and our backs did a good job hitting them. We passed the ball efficiently which led to some big plays. Defensively our defensive line did a great job, and our defense as a whole did a great job the whole game. The kids played hard and took care of business.”

The Cardinals will have a bye week next week.  Their next game will be Homecoming on Friday, October 15th.

St Mary Volleyball Cruises to Home Win over Lake Preston

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team had no problem with the Lake Preston Divers on Thursday, September 30th.  The Cardinals got a straight set win by scores of 25-10, 25-15, and 25-17.

The Cardinals held just a three-point, 10-7, lead to start the first set.  They then went on a big run outscoring the Divers 15-3 to win the first set.  St Mary got out to a quicker start taking a 10-2 lead in the second set.  The lead grew to 10 points at 19-9, and the Cardinals put the second set away at 25-15.  The two teams were tied 9-9 in the third set and traded points until it was 15-15.  St Mary then closed out the match on a 10-2 run for the win.

Courtney Brown had 16 kills and nine digs.  Addy Gilbert had eight kills and a block.  Maya Heinitz finished with seven kills and 10 digs.  Brianna Lindeman had a team-high 17 set assists, three ace serves, and a block.  Josie Baumberger had nine digs and an ace serve.  Ella Griffin had four set assists and two ace serves, and Jacey Tebay finished with three ace serves.

St Mary will travel to Castlewood on Monday, October 4th and then host Garretson on Tuesday, September 5th.

Boys 4th, Girls 5th for Cardinal Cross Country at Colman-Egan Invite

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls and boys cross country teams competed at the Colman-Egan Invite on Wednesday, September 29th.  The event was held at the Sunrise Ridge Golf Course in Colman.

The girls team was fifth with a total of 43 points.  They finished just three points behind Oldham-Ramona/Rutland.  Lucy Vargas placed 14th with a time of 23:39.25, just beating teammate Cami Wolles, who finished 15th in a time of 23:39.48.  Addy Gilbert (23rd) had a time of 24:58.49.  Madison Reiff (24th) finished in 25:02.18, and Sierra Klein (26th) had a time of 25:04.21.

The boys team had a fourth place finish with a total of 37 points.  Seth Roemen and Noah Reiff finished 14th and 15th respectively.  Roemen had a time of 20:05.98, and Reiff finished in 20:22.82.  Owen Vargas (21st) had a time of 21:06.92.  Gabe Nelson (36th) finished in 25:20.84.

The Cardinals will be at the Dakota Valley Conference Meet on Wednesday, October 6th in White.

St Mary Volleyball Team Loses Tough Five-Set Match to Baltic

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals and Baltic Bulldogs played a tough, five-set match at St Mary High School on Tuesday, September 28th.  Momentum shifted from one side to another, but it was the Bulldogs that won the match by set scores of 25-15, 25-19, 21-25, 22-25, and 15-12.

The start of the match was close as the two teams were tied 7-7. Baltic took control of the set from that point going on a 10-2 run for a 17-9 lead.  They would cruise to a 25-15 first set win.  Baltic continued the run getting out to a 7-3 advantage to start the second set.  The Cardinals got within a point at 7-6, but the Bulldogs then went on an 8-0 run for a 15-6 lead.  St Mary rallied again and pulled within two points, 20-18, but Baltic finished the set on a 5-1 run for the 25-19 victory.

The two rallies by St Mary in the second set sparked the Cardinals.  After a 6-6 tie in the third set, St Mary inched ahead 13-9.  The lead grew to 20-12 before the Cardinals won the set 25-21.  The Cardinals raced to an 8-1 lead in the fourth set thanks to seven straight points while Jacey Tebay was at the service line.  Despite the slow start by Baltic, the Bulldogs rallied to eventually take a 17-16 lead.  St Mary responded with a 6-2 run for a 22-19 advantage and finished the fourth set with a 25-22 win to force the fifth set.

Baltic struck first with a quick 4-1 run to start the fifth set.  The Cardinals could not get any closer than two points as the Bulldogs maintained a two-to-four point lead throughout the fifth set.  Baltic took the fifth set 15-12 to win the match.

Courtney Brown had a team-high 12 kills.  Maya Heinitz finished with nine, and Ella Griffin had five for the Cardinals.  Tebay had seven ace serves on the night.  Brianna Lindeman finished with 14 set assists, Madala Hanson had nine, and Griffin had five.  Addy Gilbert had three blocks.  Brown also led the team in digs with 16.  Heinitz finished with 10, Griffin had 10, and Josie Baumberger and Whitney Warwick both had eight digs each.

Elyssa Clark had 16 kills for the Bulldogs.  Emma Van Regenmorter had 13, and Bailey Teveldal and Sami Polzin each had nine.  Polzin also had a match-high eight ace serves.  Jacie Wendland had 22 set assists, and Teveldal had 19.  Cami Artz finished with five blocks, while Van Regenmorter had four.  Polzin had 20 digs, Clark finished with 15, and Madison Kennedy had 10.

Cardinals Sweep Hills-Beaver Creek

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team got back into the win column with a straight set win on the road against Hills-Beaver Creek on Monday, September 27th.  The Cardinals won by scores of 25-19, 25-20, and 26-24.

Courtney Brown led the team in both kills and digs.  She had seven kills and 16 digs.  Ella Griffin added seven digs, six kills, and three set assists.  Brianna Griffin also had six kills with two blocks.  Maya Heinitz finished with 11 digs and four kills.  Brianna Lindeman tallied 18 set assists, 10 digs, three ace serves, and two kills.  Addy Gilbert had four kills, two digs, and two blocks.  Madala Hanson had four digs and four set assists.  Jacey Tebay finished with a team-high four ace serves.

The Cardinals will have two more matches during the week.  They will host Baltic on Tuesday, September 28th and host Lake Preston on Thursday, September 30th.  Both matches can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

St Mary Cross Country Teams Both Place 3rd at Own Invite

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal cross country team hosted the St Mary Invite on Monday, September 27th at Rocky Run Golf Course.

The girls team finished third with 36 points.  Arlington placed first as a team with eight points, and Colman-Egan was second with 18 points.  Cami Wolles  had a ninth place finish with a time of 24:36.  Lucy Vargas was 14th in a time of 25:34.  Addy Gilbert was 16th in 25:49.  Sierra Klein was next at 17th with a time of 26:03, and Madison Reiff placed 18th with a time of 26:21.

The boys team finished third with 19 points.  Arlington was first with 11 points, and Irene-Wakonda placed second with 16 points.  Seth Roemen had a third place finish with a time of 20:19.  Noah Reiff was sixth at 20:48.  Owen Vargas placed 12th at 22:33, and Gabe Nelson was 14th in 25:57.

St Mary will be at the Colman-Egan Invite at Sunrise Ridge Golf Course on Wednesday, September 29th.

Gaspar’s Four Touchdowns Help Lead Cardinals over ORR Raiders

Nic Gaspar found the endzone four times to help lead the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals to a 34-6 win over the Oldham-Ramona/Rutland Raiders at Rickeman Field on Friday, September 24th.

St Mary struck first when CJ Smith scored on a one-yard quarterback sneak with 7:26 to play in the opening quarter.  That was the only score of the quarter, and the Cardinals lead 6-0.   Gaspar’s first touchdown was on a three-yard run with 11:55 to play in the second quarter.  He also scored the two-point conversion to make the score 14-0.   The Raiders scored about four minutes later.  Will Matson had an eight-yard run with 7:47 to go.  The two-point conversion was no good, and the Cardinals led 14-6 at halftime.

Gaspar’s second touchdown came at the halfway point of the third quarter.  With 5:35 to go, Gaspar scored on another three-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 20-6.  Gaspar added a one-yard score on the first play of the fourth quarter to extend the St Mary lead to 26-6.  The final touchdown for Gaspar was at the 6:03 mark of the fourth quarter.  He scored on a 43-yard run.  Smith connected with Gabe Lindeman on the two-point conversion to make the score 34-6.

The Cardinals finished with 340 yards of offense, 280 rushing yards and 60 passing yards.  The Raiders had 152 yards of offense, 131 rushing yards and 21 passing yards.

Ty Brown had 21 carries for 119 yards.  Gaspar finished with 16 carries for 90 yards and four touchdowns.  Tate Bunkers had five carries for 35 yards, and Lucas Flemmer had 8 carries for 24 yards.  Smith was 3-8 passing for 60 yards.  Gaspar also had two catches for 56 yards.  Lindeman had a catch for four yards. 

Lindeman led the team in tackles with nine and two sacks.  John Pica had eight tackles with a forced fumble and recovery.  Noah Olund finished with seven tackles.

Head coach Ross Flemmer said, “I felt that all of our kids played hard.  They kept fighting and made a lot of big plays happen throughout the game. Our defensive line played exceptionally well and applied pressure throughout the whole game. I felt our team improved a lot these past couple weeks, and it showed tonight.”

St Mary (3-2) will travel to Estelline to play the Estelline/Hendricks Redhawks on Saturday, October 2nd.
