Quarrier Girls Basketball Wins at Tea

DRHSvsTea12-19-14The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls basketball team picked up a win in Tea on Friday, December 19th, over the Titans 53-38.

The Titans jumped out to a quick 5-1 early in the first quarter, but Dell Rapids went on a 14-4 run to take a 15-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.  Tea scored the first five points of the second quarter to pull within a point at 15-14.  However Dell Rapids answered with a 5-0 run of their own to extend the lead back to six at 20-14 and pushed the lead to 28-18 at halftime.

Tea again scored the first points of the third quarter.  The Titans scored the first six points and pulled within four at 28-24.  The Quarriers again had an answer and was able to push the lead back to nine at 37-29 with 3:17 left in the third quarter.  Each team traded points late in the quarter, and Dell Rapids led 41-33 at the end of the third quarter.  The Titans scored the first basket of the quarter to pull within six at 41-35.  Dell Rapids closed out the game on a 12-3 run to pull away for the win.

The Quarriers shot 56% (20-36) from the field, 38% (5-14) from three-point area, and only 36% (8-22) from the free throw line.  Dell Rapids also had 32 team rebounds and turned the ball over 20 times.  Averi Pankonen led the team with 14 points.  Brittney Siemonsma added 12 points, five rebounds, and four assists.  Arial Hoffman finished with 10 points, three steals, and three assists.

Dell Rapids improves to 2-0 on the year.

Agnes Tastad

Agnes TastadAgnes Tastad, of Rapid City and formerly of Plankinton, God’s good and faithful servant, went home to be with her Lord on December 11, 2014 at the age of 92. Her final days were spent at the Hospice House of the Black Hills.

Agnes was born on November 15, 1922 on her family’s farm near Corsica, SD. Her parents were William G. and Otillia (Wreczorek) Gerlach. She was raised in a Christian home and maintained a lifelong walk with Christ. She shared her home with three brothers and two sisters and she remained on the farm in Corsica until young adulthood.

On November 12, 1941 Agnes was joined in marriage to her beloved husband Wayne Tastad. Shortly after their marriage, Wayne was drafted into the Air Force and served his country during WWII. Upon being discharged from the service, Agnes and Wayne moved to a farm near Storla, SD and remained there for 30 years. Their marriage was blessed with three daughters. Agnes worked side by side with her husband on the farm, was a devoted mother, and was actively involved in her church and community. She also maintained a part time job at the Storla Store.

In 1972, Agnes and Wayne purchased the I-90 Motel and relocated to Plankinton, SD. They operated the business for 19 years. The couple remained in Plankinton upon retirement. During Agnes’ retirement years, she continued to be active and involved. She volunteered at Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell, SD and at the Plankinton School. Agnes also enjoyed lending a helping hand at her church, St. Paul’s Lutheran, and spending time with friends at the Senior Center. Agnes moved to Rapid City, SD in 2007 and remained there until her death. She became an Honorary Member of Zion Lutheran Church of Rapid City and was blessed to be involved in the Bible Study group and the quilting group. She made her home at Somerset Court, an assisted-living facility in Rapid City and enjoyed the friendship of both residents and staff.

Agnes is survived by her daughters, Carol Rost (Lowell) of Deadwood, SD; Barbara Schetnan (Doug) of Northfield, MN; and Shirley Andrews (Russell) of Rapid City, SD and by seven grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Wilma Bogenhagen (Ray) of Dell Rapids, SD. Preceding her in death are her husband, parents, four brothers, (infant brother, Lawrence, Leonard, and Ludwig Gerlach) and a sister, Gladys Jorgensen (Delbert). Agnes will be remembered for being a woman who loved and served her Lord. Her favorite saying was, “I don’t know what the future holds, but I know who holds the future.”

Agnes will be commended into the arms of Christ in a memorial service at Zion Lutheran Church of Rapid City on Thursday, December 18, 2014 at 11 AM. Donna Seiler

Donna Jean Seiler, age 85, of Marshall, Minnesota, passed away Sunday, December 14, 2014, at Morningside Heights Care Center in Marshall. Memorial services are Thursday, December 18, 2014, 1:00 PM, at the Hamilton Funeral Home in Marshall, Minnesota. Private family interment will be in the Marshall City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from Noon – 1:00 PM, 1 hour prior to the service at the Hamilton Funeral Home. Condolences may be left at www.hamiltonfh.com.

Donna Jean Burckhardt was born on June 12, 1929, in Watertown, South Dakota. She was the daughter of Joe and Edna (Ristow) Burckhardt. She moved to Russell at an early age to help her mother care for her grandmother, Emilia. Donna graduated from the Russell High School, class of 1947. She went on to further her education at the Minneapolis Business School and then after raising her children attended the Pipestone Vo-Tec to become a Certified Nursing Assistant.

On May 26, 1951, Donna was united in marriage to Alvin Carl Seiler in Marshall. The couple made their home Camp Rucker in Alabama while Alvin was stationed there during the Korean Conflict. When Alvin was discharged, the couple settled on a farm near Arco and then in 1959 moved to a farm near Russell. Then in 1995, after retiring from farming they moved to Marshall. In 2013 Donna moved to Morningside Heights were she enjoyed the company and care of the staff. In addition to being a homemaker and farmer’s wife, Donna was a loving mother to four children: Colleen, Leland, Lorna, and Connie. After retiring, Donna worked as a home health aide and served in Hospice care programs.

Donna was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Russell and Albright United Methodist Church in Marshall. She was an active member of the Rachel’s circle in Russell and enjoyed Bible study at Morningside Heights. Her other enjoyments in life included music, playing the piano, bingo, sewing and crafting. Donna enjoyed interacting and helping with others in need.

Donna died peacefully in her sleep at the age of 85 years, 6 months and 2 days. Donna is survived by her children, Colleen Wohlman of Sioux Falls, SD, Leland Seiler of Tyler, MN, Lorna Seiler of Oakdale, MN, Connie Seiler of Burnsville, MN; 3 grandchildren, Rebecca Fritz and her husband, Patrick, of Dell Rapids, SD, Bobbie Hager and her husband, Daniel, of Medford, MN, Bradley Wohlman of Sioux Falls, SD; 5 great-grandchildren; sister, Monna Buesing of Russell; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Donna is preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Seiler; parents, Joe and Edna Burckhardt; nephew, Paul Buesing; brother-in-law, Arnold Buesing, sister-in-law and brother-in law Helen and Marvin Maronde.

Eugene Crosby

Eugene Crosby, 68, Madison, died on Dec. 13, 2014, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Inurnment will be held at a later date. To send a message of sympathy, visit www.weilandfuneralchapel.com.

Eugene Crosby was born on Aug. 10, 1946, at Madison to Galen and Eunice (Mehlum) Crosby. He grew up in Madison, where he graduated from Madison High School and attended General Beadle State College. He married Ruth Geraets on Nov. 7, 1970, at Sioux Falls. He worked for the city of Madison in the Electric Department for 35 years, retiring in 2001.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth of Madison; a son, Cam (Shelli) of Dell Rapids; a daughter, Carrie (Tony) Callies of Madison; six grandchildren; his father, Galen of Madison; and two sisters, Karen (Ken) Becker and Patricia (Jerry) Kreul, both of Madison.

He was preceded in death by his mother and a sister, Cheryl.

Leonard Kohlmeyer

Leonard KohlmeyerLeonard Fredrick Kohlmeyer, age 85, of Huron, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 7, 2014, at the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home in Huron. His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Huron, with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in Huron, and Military Honors by the Huron Veterans Council.

Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 12, at Welter Funeral Home with a prayer service to begin at 6:30 p.m.; or one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Condolences may be left at www.welterfuneralhome.com.

Leonard Fredrick Kohlmeyer, the son of Carl and Elsie (Whitthoeft) Kohlmeyer, was born on July 17, 1929, on the family farm near Wolsey, SD. Leonard met the love of his life, Beverly Schmaal one Sunday after church at her parent’s gas station. Beverly later moved to Salem, Ore. The couple was married on Sept. 1, 1957, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Salem. Beverly joined her new husband, as they started their life together in Huron. The couple has lived in Huron ever since. To their happy home, they added five children: Leonard Jr., Douglas, Cheryl, Marcel, and Karla. They were saddened by the death of their daughter, Karla on Feb. 22, 1993.

Most blessed and grateful for sharing Leonard’s life are his wife Beverly of Huron; son Leonard Jr. (Addy) Kohlmeyer and stepgrandchildren: Joe Bartelle, Andy Bartelle of Tuscon, Ariz., and Jennifer (Steve) Lujan their children, Julio, Athena, and Stasia of LA. Son, Douglas (Jean) Kohlmeyer of Green Bay, Wis., and their children: Kelsie, Kaleb, and Riley and stepgrandchildren Summer (RJ) Tilleman, and stepgreat-grandchildren: Aryan, Peyton, and Toby, step-grandchild Samara (Andy) Frelick and stepgreat-grandchildren: Harley, Lily and Charlotte all of Green Bay, Wis. His daughter Cheryl (Rich) Schriever of Dell Rapids, SD and grandchildren: Cody Breck and Karla Breck of Sioux Falls, and Emily Breck of Dell Repids. His son, the Rev. Marcel (Deborah) Kohlmeyer of Orchard, Neb., and grandchildren: Gabrielle, Madalyn, and Andrew. Leonard’s brothers: Nathaniel (Corinne) Kohlmeyer of Huron, and Max (Phyllis) Kohlmeyer of Wolsey; sister Amanda Noack of Huron; brother-in-law, Donald Schmaal, LaPine, Ore.; two sisters-in-law: Phyllis Kohlmeyer, Huron, and Marlys McPherson, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

Leonard was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Karla; infant brother, Marcel; brother Marcus; sister, Doris; daughter-in-law, Bee Kohlmeyer; mother and father-in-law, Art and Elda Schmaal; brothers-in-law: Arnold Noack and Larry Schmaal; and sister-in-law, Susan Schmaal.

Third Quarter Rally Lifts Centerville to Win

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team lost to the Centerville Tornadoes on Tuesday, December 16th, in Centerville 74-53.  The Cardinals lead after the first quarter by a score of 23-16.  The Tornadoes outscored St Mary 24-11 in the second quarter to take a 40-34 halftime lead.  However, it was the third quarter that rallied the Tornadoes to the win.  Centerville outscores St Mary 24-4 in the third quarter to extend their lead to 64-38.  The Cardinals did outscore the Tornadoes 15-10 in the final quarter.

Mitch Brown led the Cardinals with 17 points in the game.  Ryan Welbig added nine points.  Zach Geraets finished with eight points, and Matt Farmer had five points.

Head coach Pete Schmidt said, “Ryan came off the bench to score nine points and played great defense on their leading scorer.  Mitch shot the ball well connecting on four three’s.”

St Mary falls to 0-2 on the year.  The Cardinals will host DeSmet on Friday, December 19th.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

St Mary Students Decide “Elf for the Day”

The Dell Rapids St Mary students proclaimed two teachers “Elf for the Day” on Friday, December 12th.  Over the week of December 8th through the 12th, students brought many quarters and dollars to purchase stickers.  With the purchased stickers, students would place them on posters with each teacher’s name and picture on it.  The two teachers with the most stickers on their poster at the end of the week were proclaimed “Elf for the Day”.

The St Mary students raised a total of $940 in the five days.  The two teachers to “win” were Blaine and Cami Bacon.  All the money raised was donated to the “Christmas for our Kids” program.

Gas Under $2 in Dell Rapids

Gas prices have dropped once again in Dell Rapids on Friday (December 19th).  The price for a gallon of super unleaded is now under $2.00 a gallon.  T&C’s, Cubby’s, County Fair, and Caseys have prices listed at $1.99 per gallon.

According to GasBuddy.com, the average price for a gallon of gas in the United States is $2.46.  The average price in South Dakota is $2.41.  Sioux Falls currently has an average price of $2.16 according to GasBuddy.com.

The average price for a gallon of gas has dropped nearly $1.00 in the last three months in South Dakota.  The average price was $3.39 per gallon on September 19th.

Sales Tax Revenue up in Dell Rapids

The city of Dell Rapids has seen a growth in sales tax revenue in 2014.  Sales tax revenue has increased by 10.55% this year for the reported months of January through October over the same time period in 2013.  City Administrator Justin Weiland reported the numbers to the Dell Rapids City Council during their regular meeting on Monday, December 15th.

“We’re continuing to see a steady rise every year we’ve had increases.  Things are looking well,” Weiland said during the meeting.  Weiland also mentioned that he would provide the council with the final year end numbers after November and December numbers are reported.
