Late First Quarter Run Sinks Cardinal Girls

DRSM LogoThe Canistota Hawks scored seven unanswered points in the final two minutes of the first quarter to propel themselves to a 54-32 win over the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls on Monday, February 9th.  Canistota had a two point lead at 10-8 with 2:00 to go in the first before ending the quarter ahead 17-8.  The Hawks extended that lead to 27-11 with 2:30 to go in the first half after a 10-3 run.  Canistota led 33-16 at halftime.  The Cardinals held Canistota to just six points in the third quarter, but could only close the gap to 39-25 at the end of the third quarter.  Canistota then held St Mary to just seven points in the fourth quarter on their way to the win.

St Mary shot 25% (12-48) from the field, 0-6 from three-point area, and 44% (8-18) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals had 36 team rebounds and turned the ball over 23 times.  Ally Mullaney had 18 points and 11 rebounds for St Mary.  Lindsey Wolles tossed in eight points.

The Cardinals fall to 4-14 on the year.  St Mary will travel to Colman on Friday, February 13th, to take on the Colman/Egan Hawks.

Cardinal Boys Can’t Overcome Canistota

DRSM LogoThe Canistota Hawks defeated the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team 79-45 on Monday, February 9th, at St Mary High School.  The game was played as part of a double-header as a make-up game from earlier in the season.

The Hawks started the game on a 15-2 run over the first four minutes.  The Cardinals were able to close the gap to 19-10 by the end of the first quarter.  St Mary pulled within seven points at 21-14 in the first two minutes of the second quarter, but that was as close as the Cardinals would get.  Canistota extended their lead to 33-14 with 3:45 to go in the half after a 12-0 run.  The Hawks ended the half ahead 38-18.  Canistota scored 41 more points in the second half while holding St Mary to 27.

The Cardinals fall to 0-16 on the year.  St Mary looks to pick up their first win of the season in Colman on Thursday, February 12th, as the Cardinals face the Colman/Egan Hawks.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Marie Silrum

Marie SilrumMarie Burnell (Mitchell) Silrum was born on December 15, 1922 at her parents’ home in rural Fenton, Iowa. She grew up on her parents’, Morris and Elsie (Meling) Mitchell’s, farm, attended a one-room schoolhouse near her home through eighth grade, and graduated from Sentral High School, Fenton, IA in 1940. After high school Marie attended teachers’ college and taught school briefly prior to attending the Fairview Hospital School of Nursing. Marie graduated and became a Registered Nurse in September 1947. One week later on September 13, 1947, she married Edwin O. Silrum.

Marie was happiest when she could help others. She delighted in her professional career as a Registered Nurse, spending many years working in hospitals and at nursing homes. She ended her career as the Director of Nurses at the Tri-State Convalescent Center in Clarkston, WA. Most of her career she worked nights so she could be present for her family in the evenings when they were at home. In retirement, she became a cancer support group leader. Her calm presence was the tireless support of many experiencing chronic and terminal conditions. Those individuals and the communities in which Marie lived and served are better places as beneficiaries of her powerful ministry.

Exceedingly grateful for her compassionate guidance and loving spirit are her five children: Linda Silrum, St. Paul, MN; Kyle (Carol) Silrum, Vista, CA; Lois (Mark) Docken, Chatfield, MN; Mary (Dennis) Mitchell, Lone Rock, IA; I. James (Marci) Silrum, Mandan, ND. Memories of the enriching relationship and all the special times they shared with their grandmother are cherished by Daniella Jeska-Silrum, Seth Jeska-Silrum, Kirstin (Daron) Showalter, Steffen Docken, Tessia Rockey (Patrick Rhodes) and Soren Docken. Marie was preceded in death by her husband Edwin, her parents, and one sister Arlene Haller. She is survived by her children, grandchildren, a sister Elaine Davidson, a brother Dale (Mary) Mitchell, nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friend Carolyn Mickelberg as well as a host of friends.

Marie was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin, friend, and servant of her Lord. Her role as ‘pastor’s wife’ is one that she assumed with grace and pride, teaching Sunday School, hosting events, attending countless meetings, supporting the congregational ministries wherever she was. The parsonages and later, their homes, were her primary domain and caring for, loving, and supporting her children were life-long activities. When grandchildren became part of the family, she was thrilled and celebrated each of them and their lives and accomplishments. She will be remembered as “the sweetest” lady anyone has ever met. Her life of serving, generosity, love, compassion, and forgiveness was the manner in which she chose to teach: she was a role model for all she touched. Her legacy lives on through those who loved her and learned from her.

A celebration of her life will be at Easter Lutheran Church, 4200 Pilot Knob Road, Eagan, MN on Thursday, February 12, 2015 at 11:00. There will be a gathering with the family at 10:00 and a lunch follows the service. Interment is later in the afternoon at Fort Snelling. Memorials preferred in lieu of flowers. Memorials to: Chatfield Lutheran Church, Depew Lutheran Church, Easter Lutheran Church, Fraser Academy, hospice.

Future Road Construction Could Create Problems for Dell Rapids

City Administrator Justin Weiland presented to the Dell Rapids City Council during their regular meeting on Monday, February 2nd, that future road construction projects in Dell Rapids could have impact on Dell Rapids streets.  Road construction will begin on Hwy 115 between Quarry Road and 248th St (Colton turnoff) in 2016.  However, in 2017, if plans are not changed, streets in Dell Rapids could be heavily traveled.

Current South Dakota Department of Transportation (DOT) 2017 plans include continuing Hwy 115 construction from Quarry Rd north to the 4-way stop intersection.  The intersection and bridge will be torn up for construction.  Motorists will be able to travel west towards Interstate 29 through the construction zone with the aid of pilot cars.  However, SDDOT is also considering adding the Dell Rapids I-29 interchange to the current 2017 construction plan.  The south-bound on-ramp would not be accessible in this plan, meaning that even though motorists could head west from Dell Rapids during the Hwy 115 construction, they could not get onto I-29 to head south to Sioux Falls.  With the interstate exchange potentially not being accessible and with the portion of Hwy 115 already planned for construction between the 4-way stop and Quarry Road, the only way to get to Sioux Falls for Dell Rapids residents would be to travel on Garfield Ave to Centennial, accessing Hwy 115 at that point.

Weiland mentioned that the SDDOT added the interstate exchange plans to the 2017 plans since Hwy 115 will already be under construction.  Weiland also mentioned that even though the SDDOT added the project, the bridge still has a few years of life expectancy left, and the project could be pushed out a few years.  Weiland made the suggestion to the council to approach the DOT and ask them to push the interstate exchange project to a later date to help with the wear and tear on roads.

Councilman Mark Crisp agreed with the ask.  He said that closing down Hwy 115 as well as the interstate exchange would pretty much paralyze all the businesses out by the interstate.

Rezone Request Met with Opposition

ReZoneRequest_2-2-15The Dell Rapids City Council held the first reading for Ordinance 816, Rezone Request for 608 E 6th St, during their regular meeting on Monday, February 2nd.  The request is to have the property owned by Paul Roemen to be rezoned from an R2 Two Family Attached Residential to a B2 General Business District.  The request was made with the intent for Roemen to sell the property to an interest party with the intended use for a contractor shop.  The property is an empty lot located next to Romen’s old Napa building.

“That property probably isn’t really good for residential because of the quartzite and the sewer.  There is no sewer there.  The only way you can probably get sewer there is to blast rock to get it in there properly.  It’s a good piece of property and adjacent to what’s there now would make it a better piece of property for somebody who wants to expand.  That’s what we would have did if we would have stayed there,” said Roemen.

The request was met by opposition from concerned residents.

One resident said, “One nice thing about that neighborhood is that it’s an established neighborhood….I understand that you have good intentions for that commercial lot, but if in 10 years if you were to sell that, you can’t guarantee what that person is going to use that lot for, and I don’t want to lose that part of the neighborhood.”

Another resident mentioned, “I don’t want to make waves, but I know the city is pushing with the planning people that do all the building and property, and we have two industrial parks the city is really pushing on…one being on Garfield and Centennial and the other out by the interstate.  I don’t know why we need to push commercial deeper into residential when we have two communities that the city is legitimately trying to push exactly what you’d like to do out there.”

Despite the opposition from some of the residents that live around the property, Councilman Gary Haak said, “If you look at Beach Ave and 6th St, that is another property kind of identical to what this is where there is rock where you can’t really build a home or anything like that.  That is a commercial business and is in residential and is a brand new building going up there.  It’s another business, it’s a commercial business, and it’s right in the middle of residential that we approved a couple of weeks ago.  And I see this property being the same.  This is closer to the truck route, it’s closer to the other businesses, and he’s adding on to it.  I see no reason why it can’t be a building.”

Haak also made the motion to accept the rezone request.  Councilman Mark Crisp seconded the motion.

Councilman Chad Andrews said, “I want to point out that we are working this land down south.  Perfect opportunity here to work with a purchaser…light industrial, not even a conditional use – permitted use, contractor shop slash storage.  We spent a million dollars putting sewer in, and now we have a buyer that’s looking to buy land.  Yeah, it’s got a building on it, but I think we could do something south of town a little better.  I feel that pushing into the residential area, like they said, where do you stop?…..basically we’ve turned it into a miniature business district with a bunch of houses in the middle.”

Andrews asked for a roll call vote.  The motion to approve the first reading passed by a 4-2 vote with Andrews and Councilman David Sommerfeld voting no.  Councilmen Craig Lauritzen and Paul Miles were absent.

 

Dell Rapids School Board Meeting: 2/9/15

The Dell Rapids School Board will meet at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, February 9th, in the MS/HS DDN Room.  After the approval of the agenda, the school board will enter into two executive sessions.  After the executive sessions, the board will resume regular session.  Some of the items on the agenda include the consent agenda, discussion on the district surplus building auction, 2015-2016 calendar approval, and the administrative reports.  The full agenda can be found by clicking here.

Quarrier Boys Beat SF Christian for Second Time

DRHSvsSFC_BBB_2-7-15The #2 Dell Rapids Quarrier boys defeated #4 Sioux Falls Christian Chargers 56-50 at the Dak-12 Conference Classic in Hartford on Saturday, February 7th.  This was the second time in a month that the Quarriers defeated the Chargers, and the third loss on the season for Sioux Falls Christian.

Dell Rapids started the game on a 5-0 run, but the Chargers went on a 12-4 the rest of the quarter to take a 12-9 lead at the quarter break.  Sioux Falls Christian scored the first three points of the second quarter and pushed their lead to six points at 15-9.  That’s when the Quarrier offense took over.  Dell Rapids went on a 19-4 run, and ended the half ahead 31-21.  The third quarter went back and forth as each team scored 12 points.  Dell Rapids maintained their 10-point lead at 43-33 at the end of the third quarter.  Trailing 48-40 with 4:00 to go in the game, the Chargers made a run.  Sioux Falls Christian scored the next five points to pull within three, and after a three-point basket by Jackson Schipper with :52 to go in the game, the Chargers were within two points at 50-48.  Zane Schumaker scored the next basket with :32 to go on a driving lay-up to put Dell Rapids ahead 52-48.  Sioux Falls Christian worked the ball down low to Austin Schreur, but Ben Hammer swatted his shot away for his fourth blocked shot of the game to seal the win for Dell Rapids.DRHS_Dak12Champs_BBB_2-7-15

Ty Hoglund led the Quarriers with a game-high 26 points.  Riley Schmidt added 13 points.  Hammer had six rebounds and four blocked shots.  Adam Karst ended the night with five rebounds and three steals.  Schumaker dished out five assists.  Sioux Falls Christian had three players finish the game in double-figures.  Chard Barkema had 13 points, and Schipper and Keegan VanEgdom each had 12 points apiece.

The Quarriers improve to 13-1 overall and 9-1 against Dak-12 opponents.  Dell Rapids will host Mt Vernon/Plankinton on Tuesday, February 10th.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Gerald McDonnellGerald Fredrick McDonnell, age 89, of Dell Rapids, died on Friday, February 6, 2015, at the Golden Living Center in Madison.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Dolores; children: Kathleen Matthew of Spearfish, Gary (Susie) McDonnell of Algonquin, IL, Patricia Park of Wentworth, Karen (Ken) Rahn of Madison, Colleen (Mark) Jensen of Dell Rapids, and Janine (Reed) Hoffmann of Dell Rapids; 21 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Michael McDonnell; sons-in-law, Rodney Park and Randy Tiesen; six sisters; two brothers; and a grandson, Kurtis Lee Matthew.

Cardinal Girls Fall to Elkton/Lake Benton

DRSM LogoThe Dell  Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls lost to the Elkton/Lake Benton Elks on Friday, February 6th, in Dell Rapids by a score of 66-50.

With the Elks leading 9-6 early in the first quarter, the Elks went on a 10-0 to take a 19-6 lead late in the quarter.  St Mary scored the final three points to pull within 10 at the end of the first quarter 19-9.  But the Cardinals went on a 12-2 run in the first three minutes of the second quarter to tie the game at 21-21.  The Elks answered back with a 12-4 run to take a 33-25 lead.  St Mary closed the gap again to 34-30 by halftime.

Unfortunately, that was as close as the Cardinals would get as the Elks took their largest lead of the night at 16 points with 1:13 to go in the third.  Elkton/Lake Benton led 50-34 at the end of the third quarter, holding St Mary to just four points in the third quarter.  The Cardinals scored 16 points in the fourth quarter, but were unable to gain on the Elks.

St Mary finished the night shooting 27% (12-45) from the field in the game, making just three field goals in the entire second half.  They were 18% (2-11) from the three-point area, and 65% (24-35) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals had 35 team rebounds, but turned the ball over 28 times.

Lindsey Wolles finished with 18 points in the game.  Jackie Wolles added 13 points along with six rebounds.  Ally Mullaney had eight points and eight rebounds for St Mary.

Quarrier Boys Cruise Past #5 Tri-Valley

DRHSvsTV_BBB_2-6-15The Dell Rapids Quarrier boys had no trouble with the #5 Tri-Valley Mustangs in a battle of top five teams in Class A boys basketball on Friday, February 6th.  The Quarriers handed the Mustangs just their fourth loss of the season 63-35 at Tri-Valley High School.

Dell Rapids opened up the game on an 11-3 run, and extended that lead to 19-7 by the end of the first quarter.  The Quarriers didn’t look back as the defense held Tri-Valley to under 10 points in three of the quarter.  Dell Rapids led 33-17 at halftime, and added 30 more points in the second half while holding Tri-Valley to just 18 for the win.

The Quarriers finished the night shooting 56% (24-43) from the field, 53% (9-17) from three-point area, and 86% (6-7) from the free-throw line in the game.  They pulled down 32 rebounds, had 16 team assists, five steals, and turned the ball over just 10 times in the game.

Riley Schmidt led all scorers with 18 points in the game.  He also had three rebounds.  Ty Hoglund finished with 17 points, six rebounds, and five assists.  Ben Hammer added 10 points and had four blocks.  Sam White tossed in six points and had six rebounds.

Dell Rapids improves to 12-1 on the year and 8-1 in the Dak-12 Conference.  The Quarriers will take on the SF Christian Chargers at the Dak-12 Conference Classic in Hartford on Saturday, February 7th, at 6:45 p.m.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.
