Charles Gregg

Charles GreggCharles M. Gregg, 80, of Dell Rapids passed away Friday, May 15, 2015 at Dells Nursing and Rehab Center.  Funeral services will begin at 1:00 PM Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at Willow Creek Lutheran Church, rural Dell Rapids. Burial will be in the Hartford Cemetery.  Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Tuesday at Minnehaha Funeral Home in Baltic.  Condolences may be left at www.minnehahafuneralhome.com.

Charles Melvin Gregg was born October 27, 1934 on a farm near Hartford, SD to parents Clark and Bernadine (Maxvold) Gregg. At the age of three, Charles was injured by a workhorse, which affected his development. At the age of 11, the family moved to Baltic and lived on the banks of the Big Sioux River where Charles attended Baltic school through 8th grade.

Clark passed away in 1950, leaving the family to be raised alone by Bernadine. Charles worked on the Gregg farm until he and his mother and step-dad, Cliff Ottum moved to Sioux Falls in the mid 1960’s. When his mother passed away in 1983, he continued to live with Cliff. After Cliff’s passing, Charles moved to the Navis and Melva Dybedahl farm to live with them. After an injury in 2004, he went to live at Terrace Manor Nursing Home, later named Dells Nursing & Rehab Center. He remained there until his passing on May 15, 2015 at the age of 80.

Charles was preceded in death by his father, Clark; mother, Bernadine; step-father, Cliff Ottum; brother and sister-in-law, Donny and Marian Gregg and sister, Melva Dybedahl.

Grateful for having shared his life are two sisters, Audrey (Elden) Hilmoe, Dell Rapids and LaVonne Leitheiser, Sioux Falls; brother-in-law, Navis Dybedahl, Dell Rapids; nieces and nephews, Rock, Gary, Gregg, Rick, Penny, Chris, Terry, Kim, Michelle, Shane, Craig, Kevin, Todd and Sandy and several cousins in California.

Dale Huewe

Dale HueweDale H. Huewe, 85, of Sioux Falls, formerly of Dell Rapids, passed away on Saturday, May 16, 2015 after a long illness. His Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. in the St. Mary Catholic Church, Dell Rapids. Interment will be in the St. Mary Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday in the Kahler Funeral Home. The family will be present at 5:00 p.m. and the Christian Wake Service will begin at 6:30 p.m.  Condolences may be left at www.kahlerfh.com.

Dale Huewe was born on September 15, 1929 at Dell Rapids, SD, the son of Jake and Leona (Thill) Huewe. He grew up in the Dell Rapids area and attended country school and St. Mary School. He farmed with his family and helped other farmers until he entered the U.S. Army in 1951 during the Korean War. He received a Purple Heart and a Combat Infantry Badge while he served. After his discharge in October of 1952, he happily returned to Dell Rapids. Dale married Kathleen Sittig on February 14, 1953 in Dell Rapids. They made their home on their farm east of Dell Rapids for 34 years. Dale retired in 1987 and moved to Sioux Falls in 1988.

Dale was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Dell Rapids for many years. He later became a member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Sioux Falls. Dale was a member of the D.A.V. in Sioux Falls and the Dell Rapids American Legion Post.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Kathy of Sioux Falls; his two daughters, Pam (Marlon) Mollet of Sioux Falls and Stacy (Darin) DeBoer of Brandon; his three sons, Randy (June) Huewe of Creston, IA, Gregg (Laurie) Huewe of Dell Rapids, and Cory Huewe of Sioux Falls; his twelve grandchildren and one great-grandchild; his brother Gerald “Buzz” (Pat) Huewe of Dell Rapids; and his sister, Virginia Smith of Hayden, ID.

Alice Blackburn

Alice BlackburnAlice A. Blackburn, 90, of Sioux Falls, formerly of Dell Rapids, passed away on Friday, May 15, 2015 at the Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls. Her funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 19, 2015 in the Kahler Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be two hours prior to the start of the service. Interment will be in the Bellview Lutheran Cemetery, rural Howard, SD.  Condolences may be left at www.kahlerfh.com.

Alice Siep was born on May 4, 1925 near Oldham, SD to Herman and Florence (Haskins) Siep. She grew up on the family farm and attended country school. After school she took care of her parents until she got married to Ludvig Bergseth on October 9, 1944 in Howard. The couple made their home in Howard. Ludvig died in 1980. Alice married Leonard Blackburn on May 29, 1981. They lived in Sioux Falls. Leonard died in 1994. She then moved to Dell Rapids in 1996 and lived there until moving to Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls in 2012.

She was a member of the Senior Citizens Center Dell Rapids and Sioux Falls.  She is preceded in death by her two brothers.  She is survived by her son, Marty Joe Bergseth of Springfield, SD; five step-daughters, one step-son; two grandchildren; twelve step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.

Boys 2nd and Girls 7th for Quarrier Track at Dak-12 Meet

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier track teams traveled to Madison on Thursday, May 14th, for the Dak XII  Conference meet.  The girls team finished seventh with a team score of 38.  Madison won the girls title with 150 points.  Canton finished second at 121, and Dakota Valley was third with 83.  The Quarrier boys finished second with 130 points, just three behind West Central who won the boys title.  Madison finished third with 123.5 points.

The Quarriers will travel to Garretson for the Region 3A meet on Thursday, May 21st.

Nohava Elected as SDFDA President

Douglas G. Nohava, CFSP, CPC, of Minnehaha Funeral Home in Baltic, Colton, Dell Rapids, and Garretson, SD, was elected as President of the South Dakota Funeral Directors Association (SDFDA) at their annual state convention held on May 6-8 at the Best Western PLUS Ramkota Hotel in Sioux Falls, SD. This year’s convention marked the association’s 116th anniversary. Nohava was sworn into office by his father, Myron G. Nohava, a past-president of the SDFDA.

Nohava, a funeral director for 10 years, will serve on the Executive Board of the SDFDA as state president for the 2015-2016 association year. He graduated from the University of Minnesota’s Program of Mortuary Science in 2004. He has been employed with Minnehaha Funeral Home since 2005 and is licensed in South Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa. Doug is also a Licensed Insurance Producer in South Dakota and Minnesota and currently represents United Heritage Life Insurance, a funeral insurance provider. In 2010, Doug received the Certified Funeral Service Practitioner (CFSP) designation from the Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice. To attain the CFSP designation, Doug completed 180 hours of academic, professional, and public education activities. In 2013, he became a Certified Preplanning Consultant (CPC) through the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA). Since 2012, he has also served on the NFDA Disaster Preparedness Resource Group and is also a Region 8 Team Member of the Department of Health and Human Service’s Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team (D-MORT).

Doug is a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Garretson, and the Garretson Commercial Club. He is also a certified firefighter, Emergency Medical Technician, and fire service instructor with the Garretson Volunteer Fire Department and currently serves as the department’s 2nd Assistant Chief. He and his wife, Karly Hegge, have two daughters, Kalyce and Amity.

The South Dakota Funeral Directors Association is a professional association that represents the funeral service professional and the funeral home establishments in the state. The Association provides education, legislative representation and public relations statewide.

Dell Rapids JH Track Records Fall

Three Dell Rapids Jr High track records were broken on Tuesday, May 12th, at the Dells JH Invite in Dell Rapids.  The 2015 4×100 broke the old record of :49.9 set in 2012 with a time of :49.4.  The team consisted of Nick Boever, Alex Kringen, Eddie Price, and Keegan Miller.  This same team also broke the 4×400 record.  The old record was 3:59.1 also set in 2012, but the relay team posted a time of 3:58.2, breaking the record by almost a second.

Miller also set an individual record in the 200m dash with a time of :24.94.  This time broke the old record set by Nathan Leib of :25.05.

Leon Evans

Leon EvansLeon Evans, 87, of Dell Rapids, passed away on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at Southridge Healthcare Center in Sioux Falls. His funeral service will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 16, 2015 at the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. Visitation on Friday, May 15, 2015 will begin at 1:00 p.m. with the family present from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. A time of sharing will begin at 7:00 p.m. at Kahler Funeral Home.  Condolences may be left at www.kahlerfh.com.

Leon S. Evans was born in Dell Rapids, SD on September 7, 1927 to Henry and Lena (Lukkason) Evans of rural Dell Rapids. He was baptized at South Highland Lutheran Church near Sherman, SD and confirmed at the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. He grew up and received his elementary education in Minnehaha County and graduated from Dell Rapids Public High School.

After attending Augustana College for a year, he farmed with his father until he was inducted into the Army. After basic training at Fort Riley, KS, he served at a peace-keeping post in Schwabish Gumund, Germany where the highlight of his duty was carrying the American flag in an honor guard for General Eisenhower. After serving in the active reserves for five years, he was honorably discharged in December of 1957.

On November 11, 1950, he married Joyce Rave at the Trent Baptist Church with Rev. Chester Ploeger of Logan Reformed officiating. Leon and Joyce lived in Edison Township, Minnehaha County, until moving into Dell Rapids in 2009. After selling out of farming in 1985, Leon worked for the Minnehaha County Farm Services Agency as a field man and aerial photographer. He also planted trees for the Soil Conservation District.

He enjoyed hunting everything from wild boar in Georgia to moose in Alaska, and was also involved in commercial salmon fishing with his brothers Ruben and Tony in Alaska.

Leon was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce; his daughter, Mary; his eight siblings, Lloyd, Tony, Stanley, Harry, Maurice, Ruben, Clifford and Elsie.

He is survived by his sons, Bill Evans and his wife, Gayla of Dell Rapids and Jim and his wife, Lynne of Wentworth, SD; his son-in-law, Mark Nuebel of Newport, MN; his grandchildren, Nick Evans of Cedar Rapids, IA, Justin (Jessica) Evans of Dell Rapids, and Billie (Ryan) Rothenberger of Sioux Falls; and his great-grandchildren, Ryler, Kale, Breck, Myelle and Jett Evans and Rylie and Alexa Rothenberger.

Haak and Greenhoff Qualify for State

NewDRLogoSarah Haak and Kaitlyn Greenhoff will represent the Dell Rapids Quarriers at the 2015 Girls State A Golf Tournament in Madison on Monday, May 18th, and Tuesday, May 19th.  Both golfers finished high enough in the Region 1A Tournament held in Groton on Tuesday, May 12th.

Greenhoff finished in 8th place with a round of 96.  Haak finished 18th with a round of 102.  The top three teams in the Region 1A tournament qualified all of their golfers for the State A Tournament.  Madison finished first with a team score of 34o.  Aberdeen Roncalli finished second with a total of 395, and Groton finished third with 397.  Dell Rapids finished with a team score of 442.

Other Quarrier golfers participating in the Region 1A Tournament were Grace Habeger, Grace Tisher, and Alexis Krantz.  Habeger finished with a round of 117, Tisher a 127, and Krantz 137.

New City Council Members Take Office

2015CityCouncil_1The new members of the Dell Rapids City Council took office on Monday, May 4th, during the council’s regular meeting.  Mike Sterud is representing Ward 3, replacing Craig Lauritzen.  Mary Klockman is representing Ward 4, replacing Chad Andrews.  David Sommerfeld was re-elected in Ward 1, and Paul Miles was re-elected in Ward 2.  2015CityCouncil_2

Mayor Scott Fiegen recognized Lauritzen and Andrews for their service on city council before the new council commenced.

Along with the new members of the council taking office, committees were also determined during the meeting.  Mark Crisp was nominated as President, and Miles was nominated as Vice President.  Sommerfeld, Crisp and Miles will serve on the Finance and Utilities Committee.  Sterud, Gary Haak, and Lee Burggraff will serve on the Policies and Procedures Committee.  Mike Geraets will serve as Minnehaha County Economic Development Association/Dell Rapids Economic Development Corporation liaison.  Mary Klockman will serve as Library Board liaison.2015CityCouncil_3
