Quarrier Basketball Players Headed to MAYB National Tournament

Niners-MAYBThe Dakota Niners basketball team, which includes two players from Dell Rapids High School, played in the Kansas City Premiere Mid America Youth Basketball (MAYB) National Qualifier basketball tournament over the weekend of June 19-21.  Ten players from across the state of of South Dakota make up the team.  Tanner Heim and Mason Peter play on the team.  Their coach is Jeff Larsen who will be an assistant women’s basketball coach at Dordt College this coming fall and who was formerly a coach in Lennox.  The team played a total of five games winning four of them.  The one loss was in overtime on a last-second half-court shot.

By winning the tournament, the Dakota Niners qualified to play in Wichita, KS July 30 through August 2 in the MAYB National Championship Tournament.  Last year over 750 teams throughout the nation participated in this event with over 25 states being represented.

Terry Hoxsie

Terry HoxsieTerry William Hoxsie age 65 of Dell Rapids, South Dakota, was taken to his forever home on June 23, 2015. He was born on November 19, 1949 in Clearwater, Nebraska to Vernon and Lorena (Prawitz) Hoxsie. Memorial services will be held Friday June 26, 2015 at 3:00PM at Campbell Aman Funeral Home in Blair. The Hoxsie’s settled in Blair, Nebraska. Terry attended Blair High School and graduated in 1967. Following graduation, Terry went off to attend Trade School to become a bricklayer. Terry continued to lay brick for 43 years and in eight different states. He had a passion to create works of art, with an eye for perfection.

On October 5, 1985, Terry married Priscilla Metzler, the love of his life. With marriage he fathered three children whom he loved very much.

Grateful to have shared his life; His wife of 29 years Priscilla Hoxsie, his children; Cora (Randall) Koernke of Dell Rapids, SD, Alan Tilson of Broken Arrow, OK and Kristi (Brian) Marks of Noblesville, IN. His 8 grandchildren Maranda (Dustyn) Nelson of Dell Rapids, SD, Chris Koernke of Sioux Falls, SD, Cory (Ashley) Koernke of Sioux Falls, SD, Seth Tilson of Broken Arrow, OK, Cassie Koernke of Dell Rapids, SD, Ashly Tilson of Indianapolis, IN, Cortney Marks of Noblesville, IN, and Kyle Marks of Noblesville, IN, his 5 great-grandchildren; Matthew, Makayla, Layla, Braxton and Isaac, his sister Sandie Jack of Kennard, NE as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Vernon and Lorena Hoxsie; brother LeRoy (Butch) Hoxsie, niece Jill Swanson and parents-in-law Calvin and Cora Metzler. A luncheon will be held immediately following services at the Blair VFW.

Richard Nelson

Richard NelsonRichard Nelson, 90, of Trent passed away Saturday, June 20, 2015 at Dells Nursing and Rehab Center.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, June 27th, 2015 at Trent Baptist Church, Trent, SD. A private burial will follow at a later date at Nelson Cemetery, rural Trent. Condolences may be left at www.minnehahafuneralhome.com.

Richard Charles Nelson was born April 18th, 1925 in rural Moody County to parents Chris and Ella (Anderson) Nelson. He grew up on the family farm and attended the Nelson Country School, in Moody County. He joined the Army April 24, 1945 and was stationed in Japan. Richard married June Swanson February 14, 1947. He took over the family farm until 1978, at which time he moved to Trent. Richard owned his own furniture making and lawn mower repair business. He made furniture for 5 years and then focused solely on lawn mower repair for over 25 years.

Grateful for having shared his life are his sons, Dicky (Kathy) Nelson, Artesian; Randy Nelson, Trent; Steve Nelson and Phil Nelson; 9 grandchildren and 14 great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, June; brothers, Willie Nelson and Bernard Nelson and great- grandson, Landon Nelson.

Zachary Nussbaum

Zachary NussbaumZachary Michael Nussbaum passed away on June 21, 2015 in Sioux Falls, SD. His funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 25, 2015 in the Reformed Church, Dell Rapids. Interment will be in the Logan Reformed Cemetery. Visitation on Wednesday, June 24, 2015 will begin at 1:00 p.m. The family will be present from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. He was born on December 16, 1989 in Plattsburgh, New York. He graduated from Dell Rapids High School in 2008. Zach was currently employed at Troy’s Wood Specialties in Dell Rapids, SD, where he has been employed since he was 16 years old. Zachary enjoyed music; playing the drums and guitar were some of his hobbies. He also enjoyed family and spending time with his friends. He loved cheering on the Green Bay Packers, along with most of his other family members.

Zachary is survived by his parents, Jason and Tamara Dearduff of Dell Rapids, Rick Witczek, his father; his sister, Cassidy Dearduff and brother, Adam Dearduff, both of Dell Rapids; grandparents, Eugene and Dianne Nussbaum, Roger and Judy Dearduff, Lucy Wendell, and the extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins and many others. He is also survived by his best canine friend, “Harley Sue”. Zach was preceded in death by his grandfather, Francis Wendell, and his Uncle Cole Dearduff.

Mabel Ann Heinemann

MMabel Ann Heinemannabel Ann Heinemann, 101, of Flandreau, SD, formerly of Brookings, SD, passed away Friday, June 19, 2015 at Riverview Manor, Flandreau, SD. Mass of Christian Burial has been set for 10:30am Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Brookings, SD. Visitation will be from 5:00pm to 7:00pm Monday, June 22, 2015 with a 7:00pm Liturgical Wake Service and a Rosary to follow, at Rude’s Funeral Home, Brookings. Burial will take place at 1:30pm, Tuesday, at the Ss. Simon & Jude Cemetery in Flandreau, SD. Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements. Mabel Ann Dubbelde was born March 10, 1914 in Valley Springs, SD, the daughter of Peter and Minnie (Schreurs) Dubbelde. Mabel grew up on a farm near Garretson, SD and received her education at Palisades Country School near Garretson, SD. She was united in marriage to Ralph Heinemann on April 14, 1931 at Garretson, SD. Together they raised their seven children on a farm northwest of Flandreau. In 1970, she moved into Flandreau, SD. She was employed at the Flandreau Hospital and Riverview Manor as a Nurses Aid and also worked as a care giver for several families. Ralph died January 6, 2003. Mabel had lived with her son, Larry, in Brookings since 1992 before moving into Riverview Manor, in Flandreau, SD in 2012.

She was a member of the St. Thomas More Catholic Parish, the Catholic Daughters, the Hospital Auxiliary, the Catholic Guild, Cursillo, the Senior Citizens, 4-H Leader of Happy Youngsters 4-H Club and the Sioux River Sue Extension Club. She enjoyed gardening, fishing, camping, painting, traveling, reading, making Rosaries and especially spending time with family and friends.

Mabel is survived by her children, LaVonne Headrick of Flandreau, SD, Beverly (Ronald) Minor of Flandreau, SD, Marcene (Clarence Whipple) Rachael of St. Michael, MN, Dr. Marshann (David) Snyder of Fairfax, VA, Leonard (Lynelle) Heinemann of Dell Rapids, SD, Larry Heinemann of Brookings, SD, Dr. Leslie (Libby) Heinemann of Flandreau, SD; 20 grandchildren; 41 great grandchildren; 35 great great grandchildren; one sister, Irene Froseth of Garretson, SD; one brother, Rodney (Delene) Dubbelde of Sherman, SD and special friends Pieter and Wietske Numan and family from the Netherlands.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters, Gertrude and Mary, four brothers, Frank, Joe, Theodore and Harold and one son-in-law, Richard Headrick.

Severe Storms Take Aim at Area over Weekend

June2015DRStorm-10Three severe storms rolled through Dell Rapids and the surrounding areas in less than a 60-hour period from Friday, June 19th through Monday, June 22nd.  The first storm hit the area around 6:30 Friday evening.  Storm clouds rolled into the area from the north west and dropped hail that was estimated at 1.75″ in diameter.  The second storm to hit the area was during the early morning hours on Saturday.  June2015DRStorm-9Around 3:30 a.m. a severe thunderstorm roared through the area with winds that were estimated at between 60-70 mph.  The storm brought down many tree branches and left a mess at the campground and parks.  The severe weather continued in the early morning of Monday.  Another quick moving severe storm moved through the area that produce high winds.  While Dell Rapids did not get hit with the worst of the high winds in the latest storm, more large tree branches came crashing down in town and a part of the grandstand at Rickeman Field ripped off the back of the stand.  The worst of the Monday morning storm stayed a few miles south Dell Rapids and hit Garretson.

Four Dell Rapids Athletes Competing at State Rodeo Finals

Four Dell Rapids athletes are competing at the 2015 South Dakota State High School Rodeo finals this week in Belle Fourche, SD.  The finals will run from Tuesday, June 23rd, through Saturday, June 27th.

Brandi Wolles, Kayla Wolles, Sutton Adams and Cheyenne Adams will represent Dell Rapids at the state finals.  C. Adams will be participating in the Breakaway Roping event.  S. Adams will participate in the Tiedown event.  B. Wolles will be in the Barrel Racing and Breakaway Roping events, and K. Wolles will be in the Barrel Racing and Pole Bending events.

Eugene “Gene” Furness

Gene FurnessEugene D. “Gene” Furness, age 81, Clark, died in the Golden Living Center at Clark early Thursday, June 18, 2015 after a long illness with lung and kidney failure. He had entered the care center on Tuesday afternoon under Hospice care.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 23, at 10:30 a.m. in the St. Paul Lutheran Church at Clark with burial following in the Munt Hope Cemetery at Watertown. Visitation will be Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Furness Funeral Home at Clark and will continue at the Church after 9 a.m. on Tuesday morning.  Condolences may be left at www.furnessfuneralhome.com.

He was born Eugene Donald Furness on April 16, 1934 at Watertown, the first born son of Elmer and Stella (Johnson) Furness. Gene attended Watertown schools, graduating from Watertown High School in 1952.  He met and later married Joan Bierscheid on March 23, 1956 at Watertown. The couple lived in Watertown while he continued his education graduating with a B.A. in secondary education in 1958. He worked for a year for the City of Watertown in the electric division as a draftsman and then a brief time worked at the Watertown Co-op Elevator. In the fall of 1959, he was hired by the Clark School District as a teacher and coach. The couple moved to Clark that fall. He continued with the Clark School District serving as teacher, coach, elementary principal and athletic director and in 1975 became the High School principal. During this time he furthered his education by obtaining a B.A. in elementary education from Huron College in 1970 and a master’s degree in school administration in 1973 from Northern State University. In 1984 he took a job with the Waubay School District, still living in Clark, and served as High School principal, later as CEO and athletic director until retiring in 2000.

He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church since 1959 where he had served as President and a Trustee as well as a member of numerous committees over the years. He enjoyed gardening – especially roses, going to concerts- especially Dixieland Jazz, watching sports and being with the grandchildren.  Gene will long be remembered as a supporter of local sports and following many of the players over the years.

Grateful for having shared in his life is his wife Joan of Clark, sons, Greg of Clark, Geof (Misty) of Dell Rapids and Brad (Marsha) of Clark; grandchildren, Christopher and Kenlie Furness, brothers, Kenn Furness and Curt (Kathy) Furness all of Denver, CO, step-grandchildren, Cierra and Kelcie Hauf, Chad (Tara) Thomas, Chris Thomas, Danielle (Ed) Maack, Josh Thomas, Nick (Laura) Thomas and Micah Thomas and 14 step great-grandchildren.  He also leaves in-laws, Janice Bierscheid of Watertown, Bob (Joan) Bierscheid of Roseville, MN and LaDonna Bierscheid of Watertown along with nieces and nephews.

Mary Price

Mary PriceFuneral services for Mary M. Price, 90, Aberdeen, will be 2:00 pm, Friday, June 19, 2015 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen with Pastor Jon Damaska and Dr. Harold E. Salem officiating. Burial at Riverside Cemetery, Aberdeen. Mary died Sunday, June 14, 2015 at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen. Mary Marie Frankenberger was born February 28, 1925 in Sioux Falls, SD to Earl and Josephine “Josie” (Maakestad) Frankenberger. She grew up and went to school in McLaughlin graduating in 1942. She obtained her business degree from a business college in Rapid City, SD.

Mary married Everett Price on December 26, 1943 in Hettinger, ND. They made their first home in Haynes, ND, where he worked for the Milwaukee Railroad and she enjoyed being a homemaker. They later moved to McLaughlin, SD. In 1974 they moved to Mobridge, where Everett continued to work for the Milwaukee Railroad as the depot agent. Following his retirement, they moved to Aberdeen to be closer to family.

Mary loved to cook and entertain. She was always the happiest when she was entertaining friends and family. She had a strong faith in God and lived her life loving Jesus. Her delight was her family, especially her grandchildren. She was loved and will be missed by all of her children and they take comfort in knowing that she is whole again and in the presence of her Lord and with those who went before her.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children: Tim (Michele) Price, Aberdeen, Diane Brokaw, Fairview, TX, and Brad (Tracie) Price, Dell Rapids, SD; grandchildren: Warren (Crystal) Horse Looking, Michele Horse Looking, Kathleen Smith, Amey Horse Looking, Lee Larabee (Veronica Navarro), Thomas Larabee, Jessica (Jack) Phinney, Libby Price, Edward Price, Samantha Price, Elizabeth Price, Josephine Price, William Price: eighteen great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death are her husband, Everett Price, parents, Frank and Josie Frankenberger, daughter, Peggy Larabee and sister, Donna Herstein.

Dennis Jensen

Dennis JensenDennis Eugene Jensen, 79, of Dell Rapids died Thursday, June 18, 2015 at his farm due to injuries received in a farm accident.

Funeral services will begin at 11:00 AM Tuesday, June 23, 2015 At Celebration United Methodist Church, Brandon. Visitation with the family present will be from 5-7:00 PM Monday at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Dell Rapids. Burial will be in the Hills of Rest Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux Falls.  Condolences may be left at www.minnehahafuneralhome.com.

Dennis was born in Viborg on July 21, 1935 to Ervin and Laura (Berthelsen) Jensen at the home of his maternal grandparents, George and Alice Berthelsen. He attended school in rural Turner County and graduated from Freeman High School in 1953. Dennis married Delaine Andersen at Dell Rapids, March 24, 1965. They farmed west of Dell Rapids for 43 years until her passing on September 3, 1999.

Dennis had two main interests airplanes and music. He learned to fly at Larchwood, Iowa in 1969 and held a Commercial Instrument rating, logging 9000 hours aerial spraying in 26 years. He and Delaine belonged to the International Flying Farmers for 30 years and Dennis held all the State offices and two terms as Region Five Director. Dennis is also a 40 year member of the EAA and attended the convention in Oshkosh, Wisconsin 27 times.

As a young man he played in local dance bands for 25 years, he played the accordion from 1952 to 1977 including 13 years with the Jack Milton Band of Sioux Falls. Dennis was proud of his Danish heritage and his ability to speak the language. He was a long time member of the Madison Senior Center.

He married Barbara Powers May 24, 2012 at Brandon. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Delaine and a baby grandson.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Barbara, his son, Deleigh Jensen and his wife Kim, Dell Rapids; a daughter, Delight Elsinger, Sioux Falls, grandchildren, Kody, Morgan, Luke, and Dylan Jensen and Mindy Elsinger; a sister, Cheryl (Gary) Walz, Freeman.
