Cubs Volleyball Splits at EPJ Triangular

The Alcester-Hudson Cubs volleyball team played two matches in a triangular at Elk Point-Jefferson High School on Thursday, September 21st.  The Cubs defeated West Sioux, IA, but lost to the host team Elk Point-Jefferson

Alcester-Hudson 3, West Sioux 0

The Cubs defeated West Sioux in straight sets by scores of 25-21, 25-22, and 26-24.  Alcester-Hudson got off to quick starts in each of the three sets.

In the opening set, the Cubs started with a 6-0 run.  They were able to expand the lead to 17-9, but West Sioux rallied to pull within two points, 20-18.  The Cubs got four in a row to extend the lead to 24-18 before winning 25-21.  Alcester-Hudson started the second set with a 4-0 run and then built a 12-3 lead.  West Sioux chipped away at the lead and eventually tied the score 19-19.  The Cubs got back in front 24-21 and won the second set 25-22.  After an early 5-2 lead by the Cubs in the third set, West Sioux went on a run.  They tied the score 8-8 and then went on a 12-4 run for a 20-12 lead.  The Cubs battled back and eventually tied the score 24-24 before scoring the final two points to win the match.

Alexis Gray had 17 kills and 15 digs.  Hannah Ahart finished with 37 set assists, eight digs, seven kills, and two ace serves.  Carley Patrick tallied nine kills and eight digs.  Emma Moller finished with eight kills and 11 digs.  Elly Doering had five kills, five digs, and two blocks.  Jenna Manning added 16 digs.

Elk Point-Jefferson 3, Alcester-Hudson 0

The Huskies took the win in straight sets over the Cubs 25-16, 25-23, and 25-10.  All three sets the two teams were tied early only to have the Huskies pull away for the win.

In the first set, the Huskies got out to an early 4-1 lead.  The Cubs tied the score 9-9, but Elk Point-Jefferson went on a 10-2 run for a 19-11 lead and then took the win 25-16.  The two teams battled to ties of 4-4 and 8-8 to start the second set.  The Huskies led 13-10, but the Cubs tied the score 13-13.  The two teams traded points to a 17-17 tie.  Elk Point-Jefferson went ahead 22-18, but the Cubs responded with a 5-1 run for a 23-23 score.  The Huskies, however, scored the final two points of the set.  After a 4-4 tie to start the third set, the Huskies went on a 10-0 run for a 14-4 lead and never looked back in a 25-10 victory.

Doering had five kills.  Patrick finished with three kills and three digs.  Ahart had 15 set assists and four digs.  Manning had eight digs.  Gray and Baylee Klaschen both had four digs each.
