Alcester-Hudson Boys Split First Two Games of Season

The Alcester-Hudson Cub boys basketball team split their first two games to start the 2022-2023 season.  They hosted the Gayville-Volin Raiders on Friday, December 9th and then traveled to Menno on Saturday, December 10th.

Alcester-Hudson 49, Gayville-Volin 31

The Cubs built a 15-2 lead in the opening quarter and never looked back in their win against the Raiders.  Alcester-Hudson ended the first quarter with a 15-10 lead.  That lead grew to 30-17 by halftime.  The Cubs were able to outscore the Raiders 19-14 in the second half to secure the victory.

Menno 50, Alcester-Hudson 38

Just 24 hours later, the Cubs lost a road game at the Menno Wolves on Saturday.  Neither offense was particularly sharp in the first half.  The Wolves held a 7-3 lead at the end of the first quarter and then extended the lead to 19-11 at halftime.  Both teams made offensive adjustments at halftime.

The Wolves were able to push their lead to double-digits, 37-26, by the end of the third quarter.  The Cubs fought back to a 43-35 score with 3:35 to play, but Menno finished the game by outscoring Alcester-Hudson 7-4 in the final minutes.

The Cubs shot 31% (16-52) overall, 2-13 from three-point area, and 5-9 from the free-throw line.  Menno finished the game shooting 40% (21-52) from the field, 41% (7-17) from three-point area, and 1-4 from the free-throw line.

Jose Topete-Lopez finished with 12 points and seven rebounds.  Ethan Bovill also had 12 points along with three rebounds and three steals.  Mateo Kleinhans had six points and three rebounds.  Owen Bovill added four points.  William Hallaway had seven rebounds, and Evan Brown had four rebounds and three steals.
